Prince promotes Duke's award Prince Edward visited West Swindon on 18 June to promote the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme. OverlunchattheDeVere Hotel, The Prince, a Gold Medal holder himself, met local representatives of the scheme and business people with an interest in the New College student Lisa Raze from Freshbrook award. He then visited the Shaw with Prince Edward at the Superbowl Ridge Superbowl where award participants were ten pin bowling with youngsters from Brimble HillSpecial School. Locally, the scheme operates from Greendown Fish & Chips School. Young people aged and Chinese Food Takeaway fourteen and over can take part. There are three levels - bronze, silver and gold each with a variety of components, taking in physical activity and community to West Swindon 5pm - 10pm service projects. WEST SWINDON'S GUIDE - EDUCATION SCHOOL TRANSPORT Free transport is provided by the Local Education Authority to Holy Rood Infant and Junior Schools, and Bradon Forest, Ridgeway and St Joseph's. CHOICE OF SCHOOL Parents wishing to send their children to a school, other than one designated by the local authority, may do so provided there is room at that school and that the parents arrange transport. EDUCATION FOR 16-18 YEAR OLDS At the age of 16, students at 11 - 16 schools transfer to either the sixth form college, New College, Swindon, Tel: 611470 or to Swindon College, Tel: 490131. GREENDOWN West Swindon's Secondary School is officially designated a Community School', the first and only such in Wiltshire. Residents in the area to have much greater access to the facilities at the school than has traditionally been the case. A comprehensive programme of courses and activities is organised by the Adult Education Tutor, Youth Worker, local community organisations and the school itself. Playground objections A proposed playground got the big thumbs down when twenty-five Middleleaze residents turned up at a public meeting on 28 May to object to localcoundillors and officers from Thamesdown Council. The scheme for a large play area in the centre of Middleleaze Parkway will include many of the features and equipment found in children's play areas throughout West Swindon, but the residents cia im they did not know a play area was to be built when they bought their houses. They say the area is over-provided with such facilities. Howeverlocalcouncillor Maurice Fanning has accused the residents of orchestrating theirobjections and
ignoring the needs of the children of the neighbourhood. "I'm afraid the 'NIMBY (Not in my back yard)' tendency has reared its head again," he said. "This play area has long been planned because the council recognises that children need somewhere to go. Indeed it is being paid for by Wimpys, who built many of the surrounding houses." He said that aspects to the project such as the aerial walkway need further discussion, but the total rejection of the plans was unrepresentative and unacceptable. Also in attendance was Coun. Linda Day who said further consultations would take place with other Middleleaze residents.

Sparcells wants kids play area Parents and children in Sparcells have been complaining to Thamesdown Council about the lack of a decent play space in their area, when every other part of West Swindon is well provided for with play parks. The Council policy is to provide a play area within 400 metres of every house in the area and the Sparcells play area was programmed for construction last year. However the Council has stated that spending cut backs mean it will not be built 'until funds are available.' Local dad Trevor Day said, "We recognise that there are financial difficulties, but there is nothing up here for local children. The grass on the field where the play area is to be built is three feet high. The Council seem to be working on a priority list made up a few years ago. They should look at it again and see where the needs are greatest." Teenager Cohn White said he would like to see the grass cut and some posts erected so young people can play football, but he pointed out the problems that can arise. "We had our picture in The Link two years ago asking dog owners to stop dogs fouling where we play football." Cohn's mum Jane said she had received a letter from Thamesdown landscape department saying the grass on the field will be cut on a one-off basis. "Cutting the grass once this summer is not good enough. They will leave it looking like a hay field and the grass will grow again in no time at all." Localcouncillor Maurice Fanning agreed with the obvious need for a play area and looked forward to the day when it could be built. He said he would raise the need fora greater grass cutting commitment. "The grass maintenance programme has been drastically reduced across the Borough and nobody can promise anything. The best we can hope for is a hot dry summer to reduce the speed of growth."

16 MILLION YEARS IN THE MAKING' IN SWINDON FROM 16 JULY Steven Spielberg's new creation,Jurassic Park, is set to be the blockbuster movie of the decade. It took £32 million in its first weekend in the US, knocking last year's super-successful Batman Returns off top spot to become thehighest-gmssing film ever. And it's expected to break office records when it comes to West Swindon's MGM theatre on 16 July. Actors Sam Neill and Sir Richard Attenborough share top billing but the real stars are the dinosaurs, the monsters which prey on visitors to their theme park Based on the sci-fi thriller by Michael Crichton,Jurassic Park tells the story of how a mad millionaire revives the most terrifying creatures ever to walk the earth. He does this by discovering perfectly preserved insects which fed on dinosaur blood tens of millions of years ago and taking tiny samples of geneticmaterial fromthe blood to clone and grow a new race of dinosaurs for all to see. The film takes a nail-biting turn when the 20th century dinosaurs go berserk and turn on a group of 20 people who are trapped on an island theme park with them. The creatures, created on film by computer and engineering special effects, are awe-inspiring. According to Spielberg, this is not another cutesy ET movie - he even banned his own youngsters from seeing it. Maybe he was put off by the gory bits he has included. No move from Toothill for GP Dr Kandiah's Toothill surgery is definitely not closing. Despite assurances to patients by the surgery and stories in The Link stating clearly that Dr Kandiah will continue his practice in Toothill, some patients still believe the surgery is closingbecause hehas opened a permanent surgery atSparcells,as reported on the front page of last month's magazine. Some patients have been applyingto join other doctor's practices in the area without chocking the facts first with Dr Kandiah. In fact, as reported in the April edition of The Link, he has received the backing of the Wiltshire Family Health Services Authority to build a permanent
surgery to serve Toothill. Negotiations are presently taking place with Thamesdown Council about using a site atToothiliVifiage Centre. This will replace the house that has been rented from Thamesdown as a Doctor's surgery since 1976. Practice manager Jane Cremin said Dr Kandiah was committed to providing Toothill families and elderly people with the local health facilities they need. DrKandiah hopes his discussions with the council will be straightforward and he can move into a permanent building within 18 months. West Swindon Lions launched West Swindon Lions celebrated its first ever birthday at a Charter Presentation dinner and dance at the DeVere Hotel on 5 June. Present were dignatories from the Lions movement around the country and representatives from local Lions clubs to see the official launch of a new branch serving the west side of the town. West Swindon club president Steve Austin received the framed Lions charter document with the names of the founding members of the local branch and a chain of office. Bright day for fete TV presenter Pattie Coidwell brought the sun out on one of the dry days in June when she opened St Peter's Church Fete on the thirteenth. Pattie also helped with the publicity for the day by colouring all the posters for the fete when staying with main organiser Maureen Kerner, her mother in law. Roll up, roll up, Pattie Coldwell and Over 900 children plus teachers and Maureen Kerner parents from rural primary schools in the Ridgeway area gathered at Greendown School for a conference on world issues on 23 June. The youngsters from six schools had each chosen a continent to investigate during the last term and presented their ideas in some 35 drama workshops as part of a 'One World Day' celebration. History, geography and culture were researched and presented through drama, music and discussions. • Children fromShaw's BrookField School held a Japanese Day on 25 June with the help of members of theSwindon'sJapanesecommunity.

Good moves from Westlea girls Chess is a game dominated by men and boys but three ten year olds girls are leading the way at Westlea School. Hannah Tylee, Stephanie Lake and Aisha Sheikh were picked to play for the Wiltshire girls under us teamin the NationalPrirnaiy Schools Chess Championships held at Pontins, Greensands in Somerset in May. The three girls started playing over two years ago under the guidance of teacherSue Anderson. "Wiltshire had not entered a team because nobody thought there were enough interested girls but26 turned up to the trials in April," she said. "No other school was so well represented." Westlea plays in the Thamesdown Schools League for boys and girls

New project worker The new coordinator at the West Swindon Family Project was presented to users at the project's Annual General Meeting on 29 June. Mark Thomas, 32, comes to West Swindon after five years as a house manager at the Cotswold Conimunity in AshtonKeynes, working with emotionally and behaviourally disturbed boys. Originally from Liverpool, he has travelled abroad, worked on building sites and in warehousing and undertook voluntary youth work before attending college. He said he had been attracted to the Family Project by the opportu- face, rather than concentrate on spenity to work with families and to cific difficulties experienced bychilhelp them with the problems they dren.
