Welcome to The Link Magazine's second guide to West Swindon. Finding the right telephone number when you need it can be time wasting and frustrating. In WEST you will find the numbers and addresses of the important people and places in West Swindon. If you want to complain about something you'll find the photo, address and number of your MP and councillors on page 5. You want to tell your school that your child is ill, look for the number on page 8. Perhaps you need to get to a pharmacy fast - they're on page 6. Who can baptize your

WEST is what you need for local information and local help. Also included are the telephone numbers and locations of all the commercial services based in the area. Of course, residents will have to go further afield for some services and on page 3 we've included an index of the advertisers in WEST - from Accounting Services to Water Softeners, Bouncy Castles to Solicitors. Keep WEST by the phone for easy and quick reference at those crucial moments when you need information fast. And of course we haven't left out the local news and views The Link magazine is so well regarded for. This month, you'll find it on pages 13 to 23. What's not in WEST We're the first to admit that WEST is not comprehensive!
There are at least 150 community groups of all kinds in the West Swindon and hundreds more across Swindon. You won't find them here because there are so many and their contact people keep changing. However there's an easy way of finding out this kind of information. The Resource Room in the Community Suite at the Link Centre contains an Information Bank' where details of local community groups are kept as well as information on community and voluntary organisations in the town as a whole. The Library also holds a wide range of information, whilst The Volunteer Bureau at Thamesdown Voluntary Services Centre provides the opportunity to find out about voluntary work in the town (see page 27). We hope we have brought to you a complete and easy to read guide essential to anybody living in or visiting West Swindon. Every effort has been made to ensure that the details in
WEST are correct as at 1 June 1992. For future editions, we would be pleased to receive comments and suggestions on how WEST can be improved as the best way of finding the information you need.

Rocking for the youth of the west The 1,200 people who attended the Charity Concert on 14 June to remember the late coundillorRicky Midwinter got an extra half an hour of entertainment when top of the bill act The Tremeloes decided to do yet another encore as the crowds were leaving the Link Centre. Their foot-stomping performance headlined a trip down memory lane for the hundreds of 'forty-somethings' and lots of others right across across the age spectrum. Mike Penders Searchers, The Merseybeats and Roger Cook brought together a line-up which has been going strong for nigh-on thirty years, and the crowd loved it. Pam Pounder from Tintagel Close, Toothil said, "I'm sorry for those who missed the show. Itwas very good value formoneyand fora good cause." Sandra Brewer fromSta mford Close, Toothil said she arrived early to be in the front row. "It was brilliant. The bands gave great entertain-
ment. I like the music and I wanted tobe here because Ricky helped me and also campaigned with us to get rising-fives into school." Ricky's widow May said she was proud that so many people supported the concert. The profits from the event will go towards the Ricky Midwinter Trust which will aim to help the youth of West Swindon, a cause close to Ricky's heart. Concert organiser Andy Cotton from Middleleaze said he and co-organisers Kevin and Libby Stevens wanted to thank everybody who bought tickets. "We've had lots of positive feedback from people who said it was a fantastic show. Community centre under attack from fire raiser The bar club at Freshbrook Community Centre will be out of action for three months following a serious fire late on 25 May. The bar lounge was completely destroyed aftera window was smashed and petrol was set light on the furnishings. It had been completely refurbished and reopened last September.
The £25,000 cost of reinstating the bar will be covered by the centre's insurance and Thamesdown Council. However there are worriesthatstructuraldamagehastaken place which may require extensive rebuilding. The police have interviewed a local man in connection with the fire.

All weather pitch hours restricted Use of the astroturf all weather surface at Greendown Community School has been reduced following a temporary injunction at Swindon County Court on 17 June granted to Mark and Tracy Fisher and John and Ruth Spranklin, residents of Gower Close, Grange Park. The residents are taking court action against Wiltshire County Council and Mr Roger Ogle, chairman of Greendown govenors over use of the pitch. Jude Mark Dyer agreed with their claim that light from the floodlights around the pitch and the noise made byusers was an invasion of their privacy and made a temporary injunction by reducing the number of hours which it can be used. Until a full hearing to argue whether the injunctionbemadepermanentand tohearclaims fordamages, the pitch canonlybe used forthree days a week between 9am and 5pm and on two days between 9amand 9pm. Itcan only beused on two Saturdays in the month between 9am and 6pm and not on Sundays. Counsel for the residents told the court that the pitch was being used between 9am and 9pm on weekdays, on Saturdays from 9am until 6pm, and Sundays 9am to 1pm. He said they had had to suffer unreasonable intrusion and inconvenience from its use. Counsel defending the county council and Mr Ogle for the governors argued that there had not bçn enough time since notice of legal action had been served to produce evidence to the court that the pitch is not an actionable nuisance. The pitch had already been in use for eighteen months and the status quo should be retained. A full hearing is likely to take place before September 20. A spokesman for Greendown School said the 5pm restriction would curtail school activities as students use the all weather pitch for practices and for matches against other schools. The school was also committed to a full programme of use by community based sports clubs whose fixtures now face severe disruption. Allen Brown, chairman of major pitch users Swindon Hockey Club and also a resident of Cower Close, said the club was facing a major crisis as a result of the court decision. "The club was improving all the time because of the superb facility. The club runs eight teams and training sessions for up 100 youngsters on Saturday mornings."

Supporters of Toothill's Oliver Tomkins playgroup celebrated its fifth birthday with a fete and a giant cake on 6 June. Playgroup mum Alison Alder from Woollaton Close, Grange Park used 24 eggs and sixpounds of flour to make the monster cake which was cut and distributed to children in the playgroup and others who attended in the past. The group is run by parents who own the temporary building which is sited on land leased from Thamesdown Council on the edge of Kiln Park. Former chairwoman Liz Mann said parents had done most of the site work before the building arrived and during the last five years had replaced the floor, roof, wiring and repainted the outside. 'We always have to be fundraising and have money in the bank because we're responsible for the building. A new event comes to Swindon on Tuesday 14 July with the launch of the Thamesdown Business House Relays which are being run bySwindon Athletic Club from Greend own School. Local companies are being invited to enter teams of three men or three women to take part in a road race starting at 730pm. Burmah Castrol has sponsored a shield for the mens race and the winning womens team will receive a trophy sponsored by Nationwide Building Society. Two Westlea firemen are blazing a trail for Wiltshire across the world. With backing from the brigade, fund raisingby colleagues and sponsorship from National Power at Wind mill Hill, David Gray and Paul Brew took themselves and their wives off to Las Vegas, USA for the second World Firefighter Games in May. On arrival they soon realised that the competition was going to beveiy tough. Amongst the 3,500 athletes from 35 countries, there were many ex-Olympic competitors including Paul who swum for Britain at the Seoul Olympics. Against the other fire fighters he won four gold medals in the swimming competition. Meanwhile Dave was in the 100' desert heat competing in the triathalon. He was in a medal winning position after a great swim, but a puncture set him back in the bike ride. Trying to get back onto level terms, he completed the 10 kilometre run and took eleventh place out 100 triatheletes. They also took part in the 'Toughest Firefighter Alive' competition which included exhausting tasks like hose running, ladder pitching and climbing 27 storeys of the Sahara Hotel - whilst wearing a breathing apparatus cylinder on their backs. Both Paul and David finished in the top ten.

In June Paul again took four gold medals and was top overall swimmer at the British Fire Brigades championships. In fact, with Dave swimming in the over 30s masters competition, the two of them won the trophy for gaining most points out of the 25 brigades present, some of which had entered ten swimmers. Paul and Dave are now in training for the European Fire Brigade Triathalon Championships in July and Paul has been selected to swim for Britain at September's European Fire Brigade competition in Denmark. • Paul and Dave would welcome sponsorship. On Thursday 11 June Shaw Ridge Toddler Group hosted the Upper Shaw Farm Fun Day as part of the West Swindon Under 5's Festival. The weather was lovely and people flocked in from the moment we opened at 11am. With sponge throwing, a lucky dip, fun races, a tombola and the extensive sand pit area, a great day was had by all. The highlight of the day was a visit by one of Thamesdown's dustcart. The driver was delighted to show children around the cab and explain how the back worked. Many thanks toThamesdown for loaning us a dustcart for the afternoon. While I'm dishing out the thanks, a great big one for all those who turned up on the day and to Lynda, Jill, Carol,Judi, Bridget and Christine for their marvellous work in organising such a successful day.

Immersing emerging faith Audrey Hutchinson from Turham Green, Freshbmok stood up for her Christian belief when she took the plunge atToothill Church on 7June. A packed church witnessed her full immersion baptism conducted by Rev Ian Handscomb and David Lawrence during a service of song and prayer. There were members of the five congregations in the Local Ecumenical Project, St Peter's Roman Catholic Church and Freshbrook Evangelical Church to witness the event. Audrey told thecongregation that her move to Swindon two years ago had set her thinking hard about what shebelieved in. Thegrowing power Audrey Hutchinson about to be of Jesus upon her had convinced her baptised at Toot hill Church that she wanted to publically affirm "A friend who was there was so her commitment. Afterwards Audrey said she had moved that she has committed herbeen filled with the spirit of Jesus self to Jesus and that's thrilling," said Audrey. and felt very powerful.

Kay Twyman writes: Our May meeting proved we're a talented group! After voting for WI resolutions, we had an informal chat over refreshments and discussed and demonstrated our hobbies and interests. These include writing short stories, tapestry, dressmaking, cross-stitch and quilling. It was nice to hear about and see each other's accomplishments. AtourJune meeting Sarah FinchCrisp showed us slides of Lydiard House and told us about the history of the St John family. It was extremely interesting and we all enjoyed the evening. On Monday 6 July at 7pm at Upper Shaw Farm we shall be holding a Colour Coding evening with a talk and demonstration on wearing colours which suit us best. There will be an entry fee of 75p and a raffle. Refreshments will be available. A donation will go to our charity, so please help us to support the National Deaf Children's Society. Freshbrook pastor moves north
After guiding the congregation at Freshbrook Evangelical Church for the last four years, Peter Grainger and his wife Nita and children are moving to Edinburgh to lead Britain's largest Baptist church. When they arrived the church met in Freshbrook Community Centre and in addition to being a pastor, Peter became a director of a company specially set up to construct the church building. By doing most of the work themselves, the forty church members saved 50,000 on the architect's estimates. He remembers receiving a reply to an appeal for money from a leading church charity admiring their faith, but telling them the project was totally impractical for such a small number of people. However the job was done and Freshbrook Church has a membership of 140 and morning congregations of 350. Wiltshire County Council has decided that children who would normally start school for the first time at Easter 1993 will be able to start school earlier. All the West Swindon schools will admit thesechildren after the February half-term. This will give them an extra half-term in school. The normal September and January admissions will be unaltered. If your child is due to start school next Easter, then please contact your school in the normal way to register a place. Parents in the Freshbrook and Grange Park area will need to collect a 'Form D' from their local school to make a choice of school.
Parents to vote on school's future Thegovernors of Freshb rook School have decided to break away from Wiltshire County Council control and seek Grant Maintaintained Status from the Government. To do this, parents have to voteon whether to they agree with the governors who voted to 'opt-out' with 10 in favour, I against and 2 abstentions. A postal vote conducted by the Electoral Reform Society has to be held within three months ofthegovernors decision to proceed on 11 June. The governors will be holding a series of information giving meetings and workshops with parents from the end of June. Joe Wylie, chairman of governors, said, "The governors believe thebest way forward for the school is to manage itself independently of the local authority. We will be trying to give parents a balanced view of the issues, pointing out the drawbacks and answering their questions."

Whilstl accept his mason forwanting to change I would have greater respect for him if he let the electorate decide whether they wish him to
be allowed to take its course to decide the outcome. Otherwise we risk a situation where a politician is elected wearing one 'political hat' only to change it once he has been elected. That can't be allowed to happen.
Danger from cyclists

May I make an appeal to cyclists using the cycle/ pedestrian ways around the area in the early morning to take more care especially at blind corners and underpasses. As a cyclist myself I have had several near misses with other cyclists who seem to be totally unaware of the possibility that other cyclists also use these paths or that the normal rule of the road, keeping to the left, would be sensible to apply. Such instances to illustrate my case would be the mountain bike rider, they nearly all are these days, who hurtles down the 'Dick Lovatt' underpass and emerges like a shot
Or the otherwise intelligent looking individual similarly mounted who short cuts a blind corner at Shaw Ridge as though he is the only person out and about in West Swindon. I know of one person who has actually been knocked off his bike in collision with such a negligent individual sustaining considerable injuries in the process. The cycleways should be a safe and pleasant facility for traversing the area without having to mix it with motor vehicles, but the inevitable spoilers who seem to be everywhere these days, are making cyclingon ordinary roads less hazardous than on the cycleways.

It is only recently with the development of new techniques that it is possible to have artificial semi-permanent nail extensions that look natural. Nail extensions are one of LEOS many services. Each nail is shaped individually and blended perfectly into the natural nail allowing it to grow and strenghten under it's artificial protector (making nail extensions even more of an attraction to nail biters and ladies with weak nails). For extra strength and protection we coat the nails with a plastic gel and complete the process with a full manicure. It is an additional benefit that clients with nail extensions experience prolonged life of nail polish without chipping. A full set of nail extensions will take approximately 1114 hours and they will usually last for 10 weeks or more. It is an occasional criticism that nail extensions can damage the natural nail.
