The second largest food retailer in Europe has decided that the empty shop unit at the West Swindon Centre should not be used as a Fruit and Vegetable shop - and West Swindon residents are getting steamed up about it. An application was submitted by a local Fruit and Veg. trader well over four months ago, but only recently has a reply been received from the giant Dee Corporation who own the centre. Walter Raven, Public Relations Consultant for the Dee Corporation, told The Link that the shop is earmarked specifically for a non-food outlet. "We feel that it is the interests of the Centre and the people who use it would be best served by a non-food outlet," said Mr. Raven. "It's not a case of restricting competition. We are concerned to keep a balance at the Centre and provide as wide a range of traders as possible." Local mum Sandra Silcox, from The Holbeins, Grange Park, was so incensed when she read the front page in the June edition of The Link that she did not bother with the rest. "I was so angry when I read that the chance to buy better fruit and vegetables was being denied to local people.
I immediately went up my street to get support for a petition. I also took it to the playgroup and asked parents to sign it. I had over 150 names in a couple of hours; the reaction was total support. "Some men on the doorstep thought it a bit funny that I should care about such a thing, but then how often do they do the shopping," said Sandra. "The women all want a choice of where to shop and competition to bring prices down. At the moment there's a monopoly which has been going on for too long. Why should we put up with it." Another Freshbrook mum Sue Shim agrees with this point of view. "If you cannot get into town easily, or you're on a limited income, you are really penalised." Sandra Silcox wants others to join in and protest. "This is the first chance I've had to do something about this monopoly. A petition is one way for ordinary people to fight back and get a better deal." Mrs. Silcox is not on the telephone. WICK FARM The feature on the future of Wick Farm promised in the June edition has had to be held over until next month. Contrasting visions of its long term use are being considered and these will be revealed in August. The present occupants of the last farm in West Swindon are the Thamesdown Archaeological Project who use the farmhouse as a research and study centre for their explorations - much of it in the fields of West Swindon before they are devoured by building machinery. The project is holding an Open Day on Sunday 26th July. 1 p to 5pm, when the findings of digs will be on display and staff will be on hand to talk about their work. There will be demonstrations of surveying to show how lumps and bumps in the ground turn into maps and the project also hopes to have the skeleton that was dug up in Highworth in February on display. The entrance to Wick Farm can be found on Hay Lane, close the old gate into Lydiard Park.
PLAYSCHEMES
This year there are more activities than ever for youngsters during the summer holidays. On page 12 there are details of Lincoln The Bear's famous summer camp at Link Centre. He is also branching out into other activities, or broadening his product range. Youngsters who want to develop their skills have a chance to join small classes with highly qualified instructors to concentrate on one or two activities. There are sports and also classes in Arts and Crafts, Video Making and Theatre. WASPS go from strength to strength. The Western Area Swindon Play Scheme are running FREE play activities for 5 to 14 year olds in four venues around West Swindon starting 20th July. Just turn up with some lunch. Details on page 17. Parents who volunteer to help can put their under-fives in a free creche.

A moment of good weather came just at the right time for Toothill School Fete. Hundreds of people turned out to see several displays including country dancing and karate and to spend their money at stalls, many of which were made and donated by the school children. Catering for West Swindon is becoming quite successful for Pat Waters and Maureen Skinner, two mums from Toothill as P & M Caterers. Both ladies have been in the catering industry for several years but decided that together they could provide a local, personal service to people organising wedding receptions, birthday and anniversary parties, and office functions. P & M have been going just over six months and have been moving from strength to strength. "We wanted to establish ourselves and see if we could cope with large numbers," said Maureen. "So far people have heard about us from others who have been very pleased with our service. We can now happily cater for up to 200 people." P & M specialise in cold buffets and prices range from £1.75 to £3.00 per head. As most events are centred around food, its important to get it right. Pat and Maureen always get together with event organisers to plan their requirements. They have standard menus or they can easily provide special dishes. They can also arrange for cakes to be made to celebrate the event and as a matter of course, they provide everything else to make a meal successful. P & M recognise that a feature of good catering is the time it all takes. "Getting the food organised is one thing, but there's an awful lot of runing about sorting out details - making sure there are enough knives and forks, cloths for the tables and so on," commented Pat. "If you're doing it yourself, catering can become a big headache if you're also concentrating on dozens of other things; and if you have caterers, you want to be sure they'll do a good job. A further important point to think about is the fact that we clear up afterwards, the bit that organisers can do without." Although catering can be hard work for some people, Pat and Maureen enjoy themselves a great deal. "The satisfaction we get when the guests arrive and see the layout we provide is tremendous," said Maureen. "We really love catering for special events and when people pass such nice comments, well, its the icing on the cake!"
of a much needed pharmacy in Toothill, next to the Doctor's surgery in Deerhurst Way. A spokesman for the Wiltshire Family Practitioner Committee, which operates the new rules, stated "Before April 1st there was no restriction on setting up pharmacies in urban areas. These new regulations control the entry of chemists into an area so that communities can be served by people who can manage to stay in business." However the new procedures could prevent the Toothill pharmacy setting up for some months. A new sub-committee of the F.P.C. has first to be set up and on receiving an application to open a pharmacy has to inform all others with an interest in the area. Other Pharmacists have 28 days to make their views known. Should the sub-committee agree that a new operator can open, there is a further 28 day period when appeals can be lodged. The final decision is then made by a national appeals panel which would assess the need for a pharmacy. If no appeals are made within the consultation period, the earliest a Toothill pharmacy could open would be August 1st. If objections are raised, the process might to on into the autumn. Toothill councillor Ricky Midwinter is very concerned that there should be no delays. Commenting on the situation he said "Having fought to get a Doctor for Toothill for over two years, it is essential we have a pharmacy. I would like all who are also concerned about the need for a pharmacy to contact me on 873537." Local pharmacist Ken Schofield told The Link that recent reports that the elderly and young mothers would be poorly served were misleading and very unfair to local pharmacists who have tried to provide as good a service as possible. "There was a lot of time to make an application before the new regulations were brought in," commented Mr. Schofield. "I did not tender for the site, nor will I object to somebody else setting up; so long as it is a full time operation." The Ashington Way Pharmacy has always operated a home delivery service, even to people who have never been into the shop. This service will continue for as long as it is required.

An exhibition of photographs will be on display at Freshbrook Community Centre on Friday 17th July. 10am to 4pm. The exhibition is part of Thamesdown Council Women's Issues Working Party's efforts to find Out the views of women across the Borough. The photographs are accompanied by information designed to stimulate thought and comment. All women in Freshbrook and Grange Park are invited to come along, take a look and express their opinions.

Admissions to Freshbrook County Primary School Windmill Hill County Primary School for September 1987 From September. 1987, the new Windmill Hill Primary School will open and the following 'Rising Five' Admission Policy for 1987/88 will apply for children living in the Freshbrook/Grange Park area of Swindon. i. Children with an older brother or sister already attending Freshbrook Primary will be admitted at that school (if that is the wish of the parents). ii. Other 'Rising Fives' will be admitted to Windmill Hill Primary School in accordance with the availability of places. There will be twenty each term throughout 1987/88 Academic Year to a maximum of sixty children. 'Rising Fives' could also be admitted to Freshbrook Primary School if places are available there (about thirty three children per term). If the number of parental preferences for either School exceeds the places available. the Chief Education Officer, in consultation with the two Head Teachers, will determine the allocation of places. Once brothers and sisters have been admitted. other children will largely be allocated places on a 'first come, first served' basis, though any other significant factors will also be taken into account. Children moving into the area, who are already attending school elsewhere, will be admitted to the new Windmill Hill County Primary School (if that is the wish of their parents). Running for Shaw Ridge Again on Sunday 20th September we will be holding our 10k race and Fun Run. Last year nearly 200 competitors took part. We would like to see 400 this time. All competitors receive ceramic medallions. Entry forms are available from the school.
by Chris Humphrey Link Arts Coordinator Upper Shaw Farm Community Centre was the venue for a public meeting on May 20th to discuss the development of the sculpture being produced in West Swindon by Julie Livsey, our artist in residence. As readers of 'The Link' will know, Julie has been with us since January and is working at the Community Arts Studio in Toothill. The production of a major new public sculpture in West Swindon is an important element of her residency. The meeting was arranged to allow the residents of Shaw to comment and respond to the ideas for the work being prepared by Julie and the Landscape Architects of the Borough Council. In consultation with the Arch itects three possible sites have been identified in the Shaw area. These are: the 'Clay Pit' space between Cartwright Drive and, Mead Way; the grassed triangular area between Jersey Park and Hanson Close; and the open space adjacent to the path from Old Shaw Lane and Cartwright Drive which runs past Lower Shaw Farm. Although the meeting was

Mr. DeMello will be demonstrating his talent for engraving animals on glass in the library exhibition room. July 15th - 29th 'Commonground International Exhibition' an exhibition dealing with world environmental problems and issues, and produced in consultation with the World Wildlife Fund. OLIVER TOMKINS UNDER FIVES CENTRE by Janice Gullon. Chair of the Management Committee Apart from the playgroup sessions we intend to provide a wide variety of under fives' activities. A Parent and Toddler group meets on Tuesdays between 2-4pm. The toddlers are able to use most of the playgroup equipment. New members will be made very welcome. The cost is 40p per family. Our first fundraising week will commence July 6th. We are having a sponsored slides during the playgroup session and on Friday 10th July we are holding a Nearly New Sale from 2pm - 330pm. Breezeblock Theatre Company - Link Arts - 23rd May 1987 It is reckoned that poetry will scatter a crowd quicker than a fire hose. But on Saturday night the Breezeblock boys almost proved otherwise. While most adult Swindonians were lamenting the Town's one nil defeat at Gillingham, a poetryloving audience in the Link Studio Theatre were on the edge of their plastic chairs with intellectual excitement, trying to follow an intense if drunken debate on the poetic merits of Wordsworth and Pope. Like Gillingham, Pope pinched it one nil. This was a scene from the latest offering by West Swindon's newest theatre group, Breezeblock. They had chosen Howard Brenton's play 'Bloody Poetry' for what they called 'it's vigour and relevance to today's society'. It told of the stormy friendship between exiled upper class poets Byron and Shelley as they lounged on the shores of Swiss lakes and tottered tipsy in Venetian taverns with fawning females in tow. "We band of aesthetical pervets" Shelley himself called them as wife Mary shed tears over 'the higgledy piggledy state of our affections'. "People in love with life bring only pain to those around them" she cried. Living through Shelley's succession of madcap revolutionary schemes and the death of their child she lamented that 'the economics of free love is all so fragile'. Was that the message for society today? Director Judith Cooke is to be congratulated for this bold production. The cast's fine costumes more than made up for the simple props. Derek Williams as a wary Shelley successfully got his tongue round a good deal of nifty nineteenth century literary lingo while David Butland, a wild Lord Byron, effectively rollicked and rolled his Rs. As the men reasoned and raved Sue Austin and Claire Dutson, as Mary and Claire, played their tricky parts patiently and looked lovlier than literature tells it. Tim Langford as loony Dr. Polodori got the laughs that no one else did. With this production Breezeblock Theatre have gone some way towards achieving their aim of 'bringing lively innovative theatre to Swindon'.

A day in the life of the unemployed
Only anyone who is currently unemployed, or who has, somewhere along the line, suffered the indignity of being a statistic figure manipulated at will by successive government bodies to obtain a plus or minus situation dependant on current in-vogue trends, will really appreciate this actual account of life in the booming eighties in one of the most buoyant towns in England, Swindon in Wiltshire. In my case, a male of 40+ with a wealth of experience of managerial skills and a fertile mind to absorb the changing requirements of industry which is actually assuming a hi-tech approach to bring it forward into the turn of the century. After the euphoria of having time to do all the odd jobs about the house and pleasurable persuits has died down, the reality of the situation begins to bite and bite so hard that you really need a survival kit. To date I've written for 150 jobs, I've had 5 replies and three actual interviews, the latest being at Honda where I was treated

Lincoln, the Link Centre mascot, is branching out this summer to bring you two additional weeks to his famous Summer Camp. The brand new Learning Centre will be open one week in July (20th - 24th) and a second week in August (24th - 28th). For example your child may wish to improve at Ice Skating and Arts and Crafts. GOING FURTHER WEST FOOTBALL TEAM LOOKING FOR NEW PLAYERS You might not believe it but West Swindon Football Club was formed in 1962. Twenty-five years ago the town's western edge stopped at Rodbourne and the western expansion area was farmland and a twinkle in the eyes of planners and councillors who were overseeing the town's growth. Over the years players for the club mainly came from the railway works. Its closure has dried up the regular supply and the need to find a permanent home pitch has meant a logical step for the organisers. Join the existing West Swindon club with the people in the West Swindon housing so that a link can be formed between the town and its historical connection with the railway and the new growth area, which in part is responsible for the closure of the works. From next season the football club will be based at Greendown and will run two adult teams which already play in local league competition. A recent tie up with Lydiard Colts will allow a youth development programme to be run with teams for under 12's. under 13's and a brand new one for under 14's. This new team is keen to attract a sponsor to allow it to perform well. The West Swindon Football Club are looking for players and welcome any adults and youngsters who are interested. RECREATION WEST SWINDON VENTURE WEEK
Link Centre, in co-operation with the West Swindon Shopping Centre, is launching a Leisure Venture Week. During Monday 10th July to February 24th July, each day between 4pm and 6pm, there will be a different display of leisure activities. Activities to come along and have a try include: trampolining, table tennis, judo, fitness classes, basketball and badminton. Don't worry if your not even interested in sports. Link Centre caters for all leisure tasks including arts and community based projects. Each day Link Centre's famous bouncing castle will be outside
the shopping centre, so bring th children along to enjoy the fun. Loud protests about blistered feet and sore limbs could be heard very late on May 30th, when members of the Freshbrook Dental Practice completed a ten kilometre night walk on the Ridgeway. Twenty-five staff with families and friends strode the Downs in aid of the West Swindon branch of the St. John's Ambulance Brigade who are raising money to buy their own ambulance. St. John's nationally are celebrating their centenary this year and locally the West Swindon branch are making a big push to become more effective and available for community events where their voluntary help could be found useful. The sponsored walk was organised by nurse Jenny O'Neal who said that the Allied Dunbar Charitable Trust would be contributing £1 for every £1 raised. When all the money is collected in, she thought that around £400 would be raised. "It was great," concluded Jenny "and we are going to do it again next year".

Little is known about Lydiard Tregoze village, but records survive to give us the names of many of the residents who once inhabited the village, their trades, and some other details about their lives. However, there is little to tell us about the village itself, its whereabouts, and the size and type of buildings. Some clues survive in the modern landscape to suggest the position of the village. The manor house and church of Lydiard Tregoze survives and dominates a large area of the parish of Lydiard Tregoze. Near the Mansion is a likely location, as villages often clustered round the manor house and church. Across the brook toward Shaw Ridge are two other clues, the site of the Rectory, demolished only a few years ago, and Wick Farm. The latter has many earthworks round it as described in last months issue of 'The Link'. Survey work was carried out by the Thamesdown Archaeology Unit in the fields around Wick Farm. One revealed the existance of a raised platform. These have been found elsewhere to be the sites of buildings. To find out if this is the case here trial excava-
tions are being carried out during the summer months. It is hoped to confirm the site of the village. If preservation is good further excavation may be carried out before the field becomes part of the areas recreational facilities! The aims of the excavations are to date the period during which the village existed. It is known to have existed at the time of Domesday, but how much earlier was it inhabited? It may even be possible to date the earliest settlement on the site to the Romanperiod. If preseri/ation is particularly good or of special interest the future develbpment of the area may make allowances for this and preserve some of our local heritage.

16 AIR TRAINING CORPS GOES WEST by Flying Officer Jeff Bullock
West Swindon is about to gain one more facility for young people with the formation of its own Air Training Corps Flight using facilities at Greendown Community School. To be known as Greendown (Detached) Flight, the new unit will be part of 1244 (SWINDON) Squadron, which with its Headquarters at Upham Road and detached flights at Stratton, Walcot and Highworth, is one of the larger and more successful A.T.C. Squadrons in the country. Formed 46 years ago the A.T.C. has a national membership of well over forty thousand and is organised on similar lines to the Royal Air Force. Designed to appeal to all those with an interest in aviation and subjects such as aerodynamics, propulsion, navigation, aircraft operation and construction, meteorology, ground defence training, fieldcraft and survival to name but a few. Cadets are offered the chance to fly in a wide variety of military and civil aircraft, also to visit airfields and RAF stations. Camps of up to a week are held at RAF Stations in this country and abroad and an International Air

Cadet exchange scheme offers a chance for even more extensive travel. A scheme of glider pilot training is run at the A.T.C.'s own gliding schools and here 1244 Squadron has an enviable record of achievement. For the real high flyer, selected cadets are sent to civilian flying schools for 30 hours dual and solo training on light aircraft, taking them two thirds of the way to a Private Pilot's Licence. Originally the A.T.C. was an all male organisation. However, moving with the times it has gradually, over the last few years, introduced girls to its ranks. The change has been such a tremendous success that the speed of introduction has been accelerated to include almost every unit in the Corps by 1988. The new Flight at Greendown will be the first in 1244 Sqdn. to enrole girls. Greendown Flight opens on 24 June and initially will parade on Wednesday evenings only. The minimum joining age for the A.T.C. is 13 years and cadets can be accepted up to the age of fifteen and a half. THE WOMEN'S COLUMN Last month 'The Link' appealed for a women willing to write a regular column: well, here I am, the willing victim who contacted them! But let me introduce myself seriously: Christine Ellis, by name, a newcomer to Swindon, by any standards, having spent most of my life in the far distant north of England; I have live in West Swindon for ten months. There seems to me to be a great deal going on in West Swindon, for people of all types. The purpose of this column is to focus on 'Women's Issues'; even so, it is difficult to know where to begin and how to define what may be included under that heading. I have my own views, which will undoubtedly surface from time to time, but I am eager to hear others' points of view and about events, groups and initiatives which this column might be able to throw a spotlight upon. So PLEASE do CONTACT me via 'The Link'. In my own life this last week the spotlight seems to have shone very intensely upon the underfive age group. Now, I do happen to live with a lively member of that sector of the population myself, but I hope that, if you do not have direct contact with these little people yourself, you won't immediately stop reading here. Before long you will surely meet at least several of them because they do, of course, grow up and
become participating members (or otherwise?) of our community. In fact, I happen to think (I told you my views would surface!) that they, along with all our young people of school age, are actually the most important people in our community; and it is just and proper that the spotlight should shine on them. On Tuesday, 9th June, a group of apparently similarly minded people met in the Community Suite in the Link Centre to discuss provisions for and involvement of under-fives and their families in the community. The meeting was not particularly well attended, but all those there were agreed upon the need to meet again and that there was very much more to discuss and many, many more people in West Swindon who would like to become involved. In such a new community as this isolation is, perhaps, the most common problem. It is hoped that a network of communication can be established amongst young families and between young and old, experienced and inexperienced, throughout West Swindon. If you feel you have anything to gain from or to contribute to this, please come to the next meeting. To focus firmly and clearly on our young people, starting with the very young, getting the community and all within it right for them, is surely our soundest investment for the future.

OUT & ABOUT ADULT EDUCATION News from Greendown Community School It won't be long now until the West Swindon Adult Education programme for 1987-88 is available in the Libraries,-Community Centres, Doctor's and Dentist's Surgeries etc. If you would like a copy call in at the School or telephone 871413. With weddings being so expensive, Mrs. Colleen Wiseman can provide valuable assistance. Colleen discovered last year, when her own daughter was getting married, that there was a need for an inexpensive bridal hire service in Swindon.
