Royal town rocks for military charities

A charity single performed by residents of Royal Wootton Bassett to raise money for The Royal British Legion, Combat Stress, The Undentable Trust, and Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Families Association (SSAFA) was launched in mid-December. The project to cover Green Day’s Wake Me Up When September Ends was the brainchild of Tracey Rogers, from Peatmoor, whose brother, Captain Mark Hale was killed in Afghanistan in 2009. She said: “I had the idea in June to involve as many people as possible from the wonderful community of Wootton Bassett. Play park glass a worry

Many residents expressed their suspicions about the reliability of Swindon Council traffic modelling data, which were described as ‘pie in the sky’ and completely at odds with residents’ real experiences. Stuart Boyd, chairman of Blunsdon Parish Council told the meeting: “The Highways Agency weren’t impressed by the traffic model the council used for the Blunsdon bypass, and it would appear they are using the same modelling tool for the Tadpole Farm proposals.” Steph Exell, secretary of Oakhurst Residents Association, announced that ORA was going to pay for an independent formal assessment of traffic generation, which she hoped will reveal gaps in the data submitted in the Crest planning

The two schools have been working together to share ideas. Brook Field headteacher Melanie Sancto said important life skills are being learnt. “Peer mentoring is a solutions based approach which

gives children early responsibility of dealing with relationship problems that perhaps can escalate to bullying later. Curry cashback evenings start fifth year

In the last year community groups and charities have raised £15,000 from enjoying good food at the twice weekly charity curry nights at Peatmoor’s Bombay Lounge restaurant. Launched in association with Swindon Link at the beginning of 2008, nearly £60,000 has been raised for a wide range of causes. Groups include youth projects, army and air cadets, playgroups and primary schools, animal charities and aid projects around the world. Home education opens up a different world

Mum of 7 Liz Brackenbury has taken two of her children out of mainstream secondary schooling in order to educate them at home and says the option is available to other parents.

“I’d toyed with the idea of home education for quite a while after we had met some home-schoolers at Lower Shaw Farm. “After Josh, 12, and Phoebe, 11, left primary school I decided to educate them at home because I felt senior school is too anonymous, and that lots of the curriculum gets rushed through. “Now they have a private tutor for the academic side, which is structured in preparation for GCSEs, and then they choose subjects they want to do. This way I feel they’re receiving a better quality of education and can learn in a way that suits them.” A typical day for Josh and Phoebe includes three hours’ study in the morning before pursuing interests in the afternoon. Josh loves dance, for Phoebe it’s horses and she spends time helping out at a stables. Liz says home-schooling parents and children are not on their own in the town. “There’s a growing group of home-schoolers in Swindon and the mutual support is brilliant. Parents organise different activities,

such as joint art and craft sessions so children get the chance to work with others and have a social life with a wider circle of friends.” Other activities include drama, forest school work, woodwork, archery and cookery, which enable pupils to develop life skills. Liz explains the legal situation. “It’s not a statutory requirement to send your children to school,” she said. “As long as you prove that you’re making provision for your child to learn, home education offers another option for parents. “The children have to be fairly self-motivated and so do the parents, and the costs of private tutoring do mount up. But I feel it’s a privilege to be closely involved in your child’s education. It seemed so against the grain at first, but it’s such a relief to not worry about their schooling. The lunar samples, provided by the UK’s Science and Technology Facilities Council were collected by NASA’s astronauts on missions to the Moon in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Small quantities of the 382 kilograms of lunar material brought back to earth were released in lunar and planetary sciences educational packages. But because of the unique provenance, the samples are lent to schools in highly secure and secret arrangements.

Ofsted carried out a separate inspection of Prior Park’s Early Years Foundation Stage department at the same time and awarded three outstandings and one good, stating pupils’ outstanding personal development was ‘strongly supported by the broad and interesting curriculum’ and caring, friendly and dedicated staff who ‘create a community in which the pupils flourish and grow up to be confident and responsible young people.’

Throughout my days of being out in the community talking with people about fostering I have found that there are many misconceptions on who can foster, writes Cheryl Keller, assistant team manager in the Family Placement Team at Swindon Borough Council. There is no such thing as a typical foster carer. They come from all different backgrounds. But they all have one thing in common – they care about children and want to help them through a difficult time in their lives. They also need to have a spare room. Foster carers can be single, married or in same-sex partnerships. Some have children of their own living at home, some don’t. Foster carers must be at least twenty one years old and there is no upper age

limit as long as they are fit enough to look after a child. We have a range of fostering options available including shortterm, permanent and respite. Council agrees long term lease for Swindon’s cultural gem Lower Shaw Farm can develop community, education and cultural activities for the next quarter of a century

After five years of detailed negotiations, Swindon Council has agreed a 25 year lease with the trustees of Lower Shaw Farm in West Swindon, ensuring continued development of the educational, environmental, cultural and community activities that were first endorsed by the council more than thirty years ago. The former dairy farm was leased to an educational charity in the late 1970s and over the years - as the three acre site in Shaw became a green oasis in West Swindon surburbia - it has become a heavily used and much loved centre for family related, community and environmental activities, from creative arts and craft courses to juggling and circus skills, gardening and cookery workshops, a popular weekly community cafe, and numerous Children’s Project events. The farm is also a venue for several writing and poetry groups and is the base for the Swindon Festival of Literature. In September 2006, Swindon Council considered the proposal that the farm site be redeveloped for housing, but a short sharp campaign by thousands of farm supporters in Swindon and from across the country convinced councillors of the huge opposition to the idea. The new agreement is a big plus for Swindon according to Council deputy leader councillor Gary Perkins, who represents Shaw & Nine Elms, the ward where the farm is located. “This is a positive for the town. Calling amateur theatre lovers to perform

The Harold Jolliffe One-Act Play Festival is gearing up for its 2012 performances at the Swindon Arts Centre. Entries are being invited from local theatre groups to perform at the annual event. Festival director, Ashley Heath said: “HJ’12 is being held on 12, 13 and 14 April, with two, or three plays every night – all for a tenner, or less. “The performers work hard on their shows; the quality of what we see in Swindon was proved last year by our winners going on to represent England at the British final.” Organisers are encouraging

anyone with a theatre company to find out more about entering. Ashley added: “We always aim to put on a real mix of comedy and drama, farce and tragedy. Miss Wiltshire follows in her mum’s footsteps

When Donna Nicholson, née Gordon, former Princess of Cricklade and Miss Swindon Cinema, was crowned Miss Thamesdown in 1978 at age 17, she could not have imagined that 33 years later her own daughter Josephine Logan would also win the title of Miss Wiltshire. Juliet Platt met up with the mother and daughter team. Josephine, 22, won the Miss Wiltshire competition last June, but has had rather a different experience than her mother had. Donna said: “In those days beauty competitions were part of the mainstream society and Miss Thamesdown was organised by Highworth & Cricklade Round Table members who then coordinated most of my engagements during my year. “I did a lot of fetes and events around the town, often accompanying the Mayor and his wife.” In contrast Josephine has had to do all of her own networking and promoting. “When my mum won beauty pageants were very popular, but they’ve gone out of fashion,” she said. “Nowadays I have to contact event organisers myself and ask if they’d like me to come along and help them promote it.” While Donna’s experience was a lot more high profile, including meeting Eddie Kidd, performing for the Queen with Swindon Majorettes at Badminton Horse Trials, and dancing with disco group Imagination and soul singer Edwin Starr, her exploits were never as extreme as those of her daughter. “I’ve just raised £741 for Prospect Hospice doing a sky-dive,” said Josephine. “It was an amazing experience, and I’m going to do it again in the spring.” Josephine’s reign as Miss Wiltshire lasts until the end of May, though she has to balance her duties with three other jobs: teaching ballet and tap at Swindon Dance, working in a day care nursery, and helping coordinate the youth

dance academy. I also run an after-school performing arts club and am a member of Ovation jazz dance group which won Swindon Talent 2011 and performed at the Christmas lights switch-on.” Donna’s year as Miss Thamesdown coincided with her job as a commercial trainee at Square D electrical components firm. She said: “They were very generous with letting me have time off; it was such a fantastic chance to contribute to community life.”

Donna now works at Central Library where she meets many people who saw her on stage or at events during her year of fame. Before entering the competition last year, Josephine was no stranger to publicity. “When I was ten I went to Majorca to appear in a Danone advert for German TV. And in the same year I had to balance a guinea pig on my head for GMTV’s Pets on the Brain.” “But the regional heat for Miss England was my first competition; I really didn’t expect to win. I grew up knowing my mum had been Miss Thamesdown and had really enjoyed her role. She’s shown me her photo album and we’ve talked about what being a representative of your town is like; I thought I’d go for it.” Donna admires the role pageant winners have taken on. “In my day it was a lot more glamorous without the need for the charity fundraising. But now it’s a great ideal, and can be a really good promotion for town. and raises her profile that way. The girls who enter these days are not just dumb blondes; they really want to represent their area.” Although Donna and Jo live in Woodhall Park, Donna grew up not far away in Blunsdon and was very involved in speedway. Her family have a long Swindon heritage: her grandfather was known as Danny the Cutter and used to deliver wood around the town.

Calling all young literary buffs and budding film makers

If a good read is your thing, and if you or your mates are into making films, Karen Griffiths of Flit180 is organising a fantastic new competition inspired by the Teenage Reading Group she has been working with at Highworth library. “One of my readers is an awardwinning film director, so we decided to merge the worlds of film and literature in an exciting and original way, to bring young people together,” said Karen. The two age categories will be 14 to 16 years and 17 to 19 years, and the entry fee of £5 includes submission to the Create Studios Preloader 2012 competition, as well as the regional heats of the Swindon Young Filmmakers’ competition 2012, subject to requirements. “All entrants will also be granted free membership to Create Studios young people’s group YourMedia, with opportunities to attend conferences and media training events, which would be a great way to kick-

start a media career,” said Karen. The top three films from each age category will be featured at the Arts Centre during the Swindon Festival of Literature, and one of the entries may be chosen to be showcased on Big Screen Swindon. “If we are successful this year we hope to run it as an annual event with funding from the Arts Council and Princes Trust to make it bigger,” said Karen.” The winning entry in each category will receive £50, with £20 going to the runners-up, and a commemorative copy of the novel on which the film was based. To enter, choose a published novel or short story that has made an impact on you and turn it into a three minute film. Revamp plan for Oasis plus new snow centre and major concert venue

Swindon gymnasts from Esprit Gymnastics put on impressive displays in the final group competition of the year in November where the young athletes competed in group routines, rather than the more usual individual or duets. This meant they had to concentrate on what others were doing and execute their timing perfectly. The girls all performed at a high level against some of the best clubs in the country with Esprit’s Juniors taking the gold medal and the youngest group - Espoirs - securing fourth place behind exceptional teams from Bath and Llanelli. Volunteers needed to train in breast cancer support

Breast cancer is the most common cause of cancer related death in Swindon women and the new Breast be Clear campaign aims at increasing awareness of the symptoms among women aged 70 and over. It is timed to run concurrently with the next round of breast screening to start early in 2012 and NHS Swindon would like to recruit volunteers to work as health activists. Full training will be provided through Department of Health accredited trainers, leading to the

award of a QCA accredited Level 2 Award in Understanding Health Improvement certificate. This is not a paid position but all expenses will be reimbursed. The role will involve a commitment to attend one day training in January and to be available approximately five hours a week between February and May. The closing date to register is 6 January. After 15 years loyal service to north Swindon pupils and parents, deputy head at Nova Hreod Mandy Clegg left Swindon for pastures new at the end of 2011 to take up the role of vice-principal of independent sixth-form Oxford Tutorial College.

“I’ve absolutely loved it here and I am very very sad to leave,” she said. “I’m really trying not to think about it too much. I’ve got relationships with so many families. This summer for the ﬁrst time I met the children of parents I used to teach.” Mandy joined Hreod Parkway school in 1996 as head of science, at a time when the department was at a low ebb. “We appointed lots of new staff and made quite a few changes,” she said. “In 1999 there was a big ﬁre on the old school site which destroyed a science lab. I was heavily pregnant at the time, but as the head of Science I was the only person allowed into the building, along with the emergency services to salvage things and advise on what was what. They had to kit me out in an enormous white suit to go inside.” Of her move Mandy said: “I’ve been looking for a headship for some time now, and am ready to take on something totally different. I was lucky to be head-hunted for this role so I’m looking forward to it.”

Waiting and parking restrictions proposed to protect academy pupils

The severe congestion outside Lydiard Park Academy in Grange Park has caused Swindon Council to publish proposals for ‘School Keep Clear’ and ‘No Waiting at Any Time’ restrictions on Grange Park Way, Sudeley Way, Hampton Drive, Mildmay Close and Hay Lane. The aim is to restrict parking where obstruction and visibility is of concern and help ensure good visibility for pedestrians and cyclists travelling to and from the school. The footpath is separated from the road by a muddy grass strip and the hazard in a congested area is made worse by a raised manhole cover in the middle of it. Danielle speaks out for youth

Young single mum Danielle Brown has set up a brand new charity in Swindon called the Youth Life Project, with the aim of helping young people get more involved in their communities and be perceived in a more positive light. “This is something I’ve wanted to do for ages but after the riots in the summer I became even more determined because all you heard after them was how bad the youth of today are.” Danielle sees the Youth Life Project as a way of reaching out to young people to help them become more aware of issues that could affect them, like knife crime, jail experiences and gang culture, by taking awareness classes into schools and youth groups. “We also want to do some market research to see what kinds of things young people might like to learn about that aren’t currently taught in school – things like ﬁrst aid for babies or sign language. “I had a difﬁcult time during my childhood and never had anyone there for me growing up. I’ve managed to stay quite level-headed, but there are a lot of young people that don’t.” She has received support from Youth Action Swindon, and the backing of Swindon Youth MP Carney Bonner, as well as North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson. Jo, 55, a member of North Swindon Baptist Church, has been involved with shoebox coordinators Operation Christmas Child since her daughter brought home a leaﬂet about the project in 1997. By helping with the distribution, and hopefully overcoming her fear of ﬂying, Jo hopes to gain a deeper understanding of the need. Jo said the six day trip, paid for by sponsorship and fundraising, will help her talk about the work of the charity on visits to Swindon

churches, schools and clubs. “I, and others, are addicted to shoeboxing. We collect throughout the year and many of us have set up craft clubs to knit items for the boxes. It’s extremely rewarding. “The recipients of the shoeboxes respond with gratitude and joy. For many it will be their ﬁrst present. During the summer Swindon youngsters took part in The Link Magazine paint an angel competition to raise money for the orphanage. Rosa said: “The children were delighted with the angel paintings and to know that young people in England are helping them.”
