Tadpole Farm link road rejected

The planning application submitted by Crest Nicholson for 21 houses north of Adinsell Road adjacent to Tadpole Lane has been significantly revised following objections by local residents. As reported in The Link Redhouse Residents’ Association are very concerned about the developer’s proposals to build a road linking Tadpole Lane with Thamesdown Drive via Adinsell Road and the already congested Eastbury Way. The revised plan for the site shows access via the adjacent Matthew Homes development. Space has been left for a link road to Tadpole Farm but this will have to be applied for separately.

Walk off the winter blues for charity

£1 million target for Lydiard Park disability centre

Hop Skip and Jump, a charity which provides respite care for families with disabled children, are setting the people of Swindon a challenge. Swindon Council is leasing land at Lydiard Park for a large log cabin to cater for the 300 families with disabled children in the Swindon area. But to pay for the building and the necessary indoor and outdoor special needs equipment, the charity is appealing for £985,000. They want to start building in the Spring so the race is on to bring in the cash. Brewery boss James Arkell and his wife Cally have agreed to be presidents of the local fundraising committee and a series of events are

being planned to involve as many people as possible. The log cabin, designed by Swindon Council architects will house soft play and sensory rooms, a ball pit and meeting rooms for parents and staff. An outdoor play area will include specialist equipment suitable for children in wheelchairs. The August Link exclusively revealed that Hop Skip and Jump president actress Liz Hurley had agreed to attend a glitzy fundraiser. But Click Mitchell said the target

will be achieved by small and large events. “Every contribution is important; it’s a big total but lots of small amounts will get us there.”

Dial-a-Ride threatened by cuts

In Swindon Council’s search for budget reductions, community transport service Dial-a-Ride has been slated with a £50,000 reduction in its grant. Learning for Life opened a training centre at Basepoint in October, offering courses to people with a range of disability, including IT courses for visually impaired people, some using white canes or guide dogs to ﬁnd their way there. Peter Mead who coordinates the course which his wife Sue tutors, said, “the nearest bus stop is about 15 minutes away and involves course members getting off a bus onto a muddy verge on Mead Way and then walking along Rivermead Drive which is very dangerous. In wet weather it’s slippery and unpleasant, and our people have been put off attending.” In November he wrote to Thamesdown Transport asking if

the number 18 and 22 buses could be diverted along Rivermead Drive, or whether a new bus stop could be created on Mead Way close to a footpath that leads to Basepoint from Shaw. This would require a pedestrian crossing or a bus stop link to the footpath under Mead Way. Thamesdown Transport managing director Paul Jenkins replied to say a diversion was not commercially viable and would increase journey times. A new bus stop is not an option because of vehicle speeds on the section of Mead Way which could create dangers for drivers and pedestrians. He suggests people take the 19 to Cartwright Drive, Shaw and use a footpath link to Basepoint.

Millbrook: ‘the future is purple and positive’

The official opening of Millbrook Primary School at the end of November had a purple theme when government education minister Diana Johnson MP and South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove attended in purple jackets to match the school uniform and carpets running through the building. Ms Johnson told the children, “I’m delighted to celebrate the opening of such an impressive new school and meet such bright happy children. You have a fabulous headteacher and lovely teachers.” On a tour of the building she repeated her appreciation of headteacher Clare Griffin-Felton. “She leads by example and has an impressive team around her.” Anne Snelgrove agreed. “Clare has a strong vision for the school and for every child. Her drive has brought two schools together to create greater opportunity; it sends out a strong message to the community. “Swindon Borough Council has done an excellent job in providing a school that people wanted.” Coun Gary Perkins, Swindon Council cabinet member for schools, said, “it was certainly very difficult when we proposed amalgamating Freshbrook and Windmill Hill; the uncertainty was understandable. New Shaw Ridge like a time warp for former pupils Shaw Ridge Primary School held an open day for the community to view the new school built next to the site of the 1980s original. Parents and pupils and members of groups moving into the community facilities toured the circular building surrounding a large playground, viewing children’s work and talking to teachers. Sarah Rathbone and her son Jamie have the distinction of both being taught by Stephanie Godwin. Sarah is also unusual in that, as Sarah Ramsey, she started school at Freshbrook which is now closed, both her children attended Salt Way Primary in Middleleaze which was amalgamated with Shaw Ridge in 2006, before moving into the brand new building. She said, “it’s a bit like a time warp to meet one of my former teachers as a mother, but I really like the idea of Jamie in Mrs Godwin’s class. It makes me feel part of a community. “And I’m very jealous of children nowadays; they have an absolutely lovely school.” Mrs Godwin, who taught Sarah in her probation year as Miss Williams said, “we often see young people back in school and we have quite a few parents who attended. They hold us in high regard.” Colleague Jill Edwards said the Shaw Ridge ethos leaves with the children. “They feel very comfortable about coming back to see us. A group of youngsters at Uplands Special School were awarded Duke of Edinburgh bronze award certificates at the DeVere Hotel by Swindon’s deputy mayor Rex Barnett in November. The group followed the award curriculum by developing gardening as part of the skills section, volunteering by helping the wardens at Lydiard Park, trying out a variety of sports including kick boxing and taking part in a week’s expedition in the Forest of Dean. “The group have achieved a great deal and have pushed themselves outside of their comfort zone to face many challenges,” said youth worker Carol-Anne Rapson. “Many people helped give the youngsters the opportunity and we’d like to thank the DeVere for allowing us to host the presentation ceremony which was hugely enjoyed by the young people and their parents.”

Oakhurst permanent school well on the way for September occupation

Children at Oakhurst Primary School donned hard hats and high-vis vests for a tour of their new school building before Christmas.

It was the first time they had seen the back of the building which is being constructed on a site immediately behind the two class temporary school which opened in September on Pioneer Way. Built on two levels the new building will have the capacity for 420 pupils, plus a 52 place nursery, and includes rooms available for use by community organisations. At present only reception and Year 1 children have been taken in. From September children from nursery to Year 6 will be accepted. Deputy Head Kasia Wojewodka said, “we’re going to have a grass roof on top of the school as well as decked outside learning areas, which will give us so much more space and range for our lessons.” “As a community school we have fabulous support from parents, governors and residents. The new community rooms will ensure the

school can be used by everyone.” In the meantime an appeal in the Autumn term to help make the temporary playground more attractive brought an enthusiastic response from Homebase at North Swindon District Centre. Founder Jenny Sullivan said, "dance is a brilliant thing for young people to do. It benefits them in so many different ways - not just physical exertion. It's been proven that it's good for children's social skills, discipline, working together, and very good for their coordination." Some Sullivan students have gone onto tread the boards in the West End and in national touring companies, including former Greendown pupil Simone MistryPalmer, who has been in the stage version of High School Musical. She even returned to Freshbrook last year to do a High School Musical masterclass for current students. It's ten years since Shelene Lester joined as a partner in the Sullivan School of Dance and to commemorate that the Wyvern show in April Lights, Action, Replay - will feature old favourites as well as new routines. Jenny added, "dance isn't as expensive as people think, it's around £3 a session. It isn't only for those people who are well off, which is why my classes meet in local cen-

Her six year old daughter Lucy, who does ballet and tap, added, "It's lovely. Tap is noisy and I like doing poses in ballet, and I like playing with the other children." Six year old Katie Turner said, "I like ballet because we pretend to be animals, and I love being the pony." Following last May’s phenomenal festival, plans are now well underway for the seventeenth Swindon Festival of Literature, from 3 to 15 May. Authors and speakers at venues across town will include established names from the world of literature, politics, science, sport, entertainment and television. Festival organisers have secured a number of exciting bookings including barrister and former resident of 10 Downing Street Cherie Blair with her book Speaking for Myself, the first woman Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy; and actor raconteur Maureen Lipman with her autobiography Past-it Notes. Brian Moore, one of English rugby’s most successful players, now sports commentator, author and opera lover, will explore his cultured side and perhaps tell a tale or two from the front row. Negotiations are also in progress with numerous other established authors and performers. The search is on for a Disney World author. Of course, in true Swindon Festival of Literature tradition, it is not just the famous names that make this festival a high spot on Wiltshire’s cultural calendar.

The now nationally-famous Swindon Performance Poetry Slam competition and the schools’ Youth Slam will see participants work wonders with words. Also on the agenda are a bookish weekend for children and families in Lydiard Park, a philosophical new Think Slam event, the oh-so-exciting Poems, Pints, & Music evening, plus a wide range of literary talks, discussions and readings at theatres, arts venues, libraries, schools, pubs, parks, and even in an ex-cowshed. Festival director Matt Holland, who has been working on the programme since last May, said, “the festival’s profile and reputation continue to grow. “Each year it attracts new writers, terrific speakers, and a larger following. It has become a veritable festival of ideas; at every level, it has become a fantastic celebration for Swindon of things well written and things well said.” He added, “It offers experiences that make life memorable. People of all ages and backgrounds have

How to recycle Christmas good wishes

Don’t throw away your Christmas cards - recycle them and help The Woodland Trust. The UK’s leading woodland charity, has been running the Christmas Card recycling scheme for 13 years. Money raised so far has enabled the Trust to: • plant over 141,000 trees; • save over 12,000 tonnes of paper from landfill ; • and stop over 16,000 tonnes of CO2 from going into the atmosphere - the equivalent to taking more than 5,000 cars off the road for a year. Hungry caterpillar helps foodbank grow

A classic children’s book has helped Swindon Foodbank gain new followers at Salt Way Children’s Centre. Project organiser mum Tracy Pettey said, “we tried to launch a collection without success but linking it to the Hungry Caterpillar caught the imagination. Pig’s eyeballs almost put off trialists

The earthworms and maggots were tolerable, the giant water beetle was a bit of a mouthful, but the three volunteers who took part in a Bushtucker trial at the Forrester’s Arms in aid of Prospect Hospice at the end of October were almost defeated by the black, hard pig’s eyeball served up as the last of 18 mouth watering courses. But Mo Hartley, Brett Young and Chris Dunne manfully completed the job and raised £462.This was added to £350 raised by Swindon half marathon runner Jo Noone and the proceeds of a weekly meat and veg raffle. Skater triumphs at British championship

A promising young ice skater from Link Centre won the British Novice Championships at the end of November. Isabella Larkin, 13, had already won two qualifying competitions against many of the skaters she was up against in Sheffield. The Bradon Forest pupil will be taking time off from studies in February when she’ll represent Britain in Slovenia and in Italy in April. “We have high hopes for Isabella,” said her coach Lesley Pearce. “She’s achieved double jumps and is training hard to achieve triples. International selection will help her get a good idea of the standards to be achieved at the highest level.”

Swindon Council is offering a free eight week cycling course to help over 50s who never learnt how to ride a bicycle discover the fun and freedom to be had, and to encourage over 50s to have the conﬁdence to get back on a bike after a break. Cycling for stroke club transport

An 87 mile mountain bike ride along the Ridgeway trail at the end of October by Adam Girling and Brian Hall who work at Link Centre took 12½ hours and raised £2,500 for the Swindon Stroke Support Group. A lady with learning and physical disabilities is bringing a splash of colour and beauty to Holy Trinity Church in Shaw. Huma Saeed, from Nine Elms, is 25 and is volunteering to arrange flowers at the church. She studied floristry at Swindon College for four years and on completing her course wanted to start work - but was assessed as not being suitable for paid employment. Climb supports children with inherited metabolic diseases. Natalie-Jayne Stone, whose brother Mathew, 19, lives with a metabolic disease, collected the cheque. She works with her mother Carolyn Stone to organise various local events in aid of the charity. She said, “my mum runs the Swindon branch of the Climb support group, and is available to talk to people in the area affected by metabolic diseases,

and also groups who want to know more and could help.” Janet has been involved with Climb for a number of years, after her grandson Jamie Kirk died of an extremely rare metabolic disease at only 13 days old. Tree planters break records

Scores of be-wellied and spade-wielding people made their way to Black Horse Farm in Wroughton on 5 December to take part in a worldrecord breaking attempt to plant as many trees as possible in one hour. Marathon trip inspires firefighter

Stratton based firefighter Marcus Moore from Shaw, having taken part in November’s New York marathon when he raised £2,500 for the Fire Fighter’s Charity, is planning to return in September. “Apart from the awesome experience of running through New York with thousands of people cheering you on, we had an amazing reception from local firefighters,” said Marcus, who took 3 hours and 39 minutes to complete the marathon. “There were 30 firefighters from across Britain there and we went to the NYFD training school called The Rock which is an incredible facility. Ironman takes to the treadmill Mike Buss from Highworth is on a year long fundraising drive in aid of Help for Heroes, aiming to raise £100,000 by next Christmas, and breaking several world records in the process. From 9 to 16 January he will run up to 20 hours each day on a treadmill in the Brunel Centre, completing three marathons per session. Chernobyl Children In Need (CCIN) concentrates on building work and providing equipment in the Ozarichi district just outside the Chernobyl exclusion zone. In the past ten years it has contributed £500,000 worth of sponsorship and renovation work to school kitchens and providing toilet blocks, and has sent £1 million pounds of humanitarian aid. CCIN came about after Westburybased founder Adrian Walker’s family hosted Natalia, 13, from Belarus. “My job had taken me all over Russia so I was comfortable travelling in that part of the world,” he said. “Natalia’s family invited me to visit them in Belarus and on a visit to the school I asked to use the toilet. The staff were embarrassed when they pointed out a shed across a ﬁeld; there were holes in the ground for all the children and adults. “That was the catalyst to make a difference to children in their home villages. Unless we did something to improve sanitation they wouldn’t be able to get stronger given that they have weak immune systems because of the radiation.” Gin McGifﬁn from Oakhurst is the CCIN vice-chair and is develop-

ing the charity in the Swindon area. “With CCIN’s help the main school in the area has been upgraded to the level of gymnasia or college, and has become the region’s top secondary school,” she said. “We work closely with Rotary Club of Swindon Thamesdown and with their help in 2010 we hope to send two more containers of aid, replace the Ozarichi mini-bus, and refurbish more school kitchens. She is hoping to attract more support from companies and wants to meet individuals who would like to sponsor the cost of a child’s recuperation holiday in Belarus or in Wiltshire. She also announced a new initiative to assist poor families in Ozarichi. She said, “join us and be the first to buy a cow for a needy family as part of our new sustainable incomes project.” She added that the work of the charity is best summed up in the words of a Belarus grandmother who commented, ‘you have made the difference to us between existing and living.’ To get involved as a child sponsor, or to assist with fundraising, call Gin McGiffin on 07753 662891 or mail:gin@mcgiffin.com
