Instead, she's off to Japan to teach English for a year. Kirstie's tutor group were so convinced that she looks like Emma from the Spice Girls that they put her name forward to appear in a Children's BBC Christmas special, 'The Christmas Zone,'

shown on 23 December. "Miss Irving really looks like Emma," said Hreod student Hayley Embling, pictured left, who wrote a letter to BBC researchers looking for teacher lookalikes. "We all love the Spice Girls because they say what girls think. "The tutor group attended the three hour recording of the show where the shy 23 year old was dressed up as Emma in a really short dress. "It was really embarrassing and quite intimidating," said Kirstie. "1 was very self-conscious about my dress riding up in the games

Better services by bus The centre pages of this Link features a handy pull out map showing new times for services 1 and 1A run by Thamesdown Transport which come into force on 27 January. Not only are services changing. With the slogan, Children in Buggies, Shoppers with Trolleys easier access for all,' Thamesdown Transport has introduced new low floor buses to make public transport more attractive. In addition to low floors, the buses can also 'kneel' at stops to bring the door even closer to ground level, making access much easier for buggies and shopping trolleys, and for people who cannot climb stairs. Buggies do not have to be folded and trolleys can be stored at the front of the bus. The buses have no steps until the rear of the vehicle and with wider seats and more space between them, a new level of comfort is now available.

Head ready for retirement Ian Perkins, headteacher at Bradon Forest School, Purton will be retiring at the end of the Easter term. He comes from a long line of Swindonians - his great grandfather arrived in the town to work for the GWR in the mid-19th Century. Mr Perkins followed his father and mother into teaching and was deputy head at Common-weal School which his parents and he attended, before his appointment to Bradon at Easter 1982. There were 700 students when he arrived, just before planned expansion to take children from West Swindon. There are now 1000 on roll.

Mr Perkins has an open view as to his next moves. 'The decision to go was made some time ago after consultation with the chair of governors. An excellent Ofsted in-

Kelly Ball, Becky Barnard and Nicola West are three partners in their own Young Enterprise company called Bizzy Bugs. They will take on hoovering, dusting, polishing, mopping and bathroom cleaning, and charge just £5. Some customers provide the materials they want used, but the girls can bring their own. The only piece of equipment required is a vacuum cleaner. 'We considered lots of ideas for our Young Enterprise business,

and cleaning was the one we could all agree on,' said Becky. "But we don't have very tidy bedrooms, I must admit." One and half billion Christmas cards will have been sent in December and the Great Western Community Forest is a joining a national campaign to recycle as many as possible to raise funds for tree planting in community forests across the country. Recycling cards also means that they do not end up in valuable landfill sites. Schools across Swindon will be spearheading the card recycling scheme in January and there will be special collecting bins at selected local post offices.

Headteacher Neil Griffiths said the invitation to grandparents was a way of building closer links with the community, especially when many families have moved to the area, away from grandparents. "We also wanted to show what it is like to be a child in school nowadays. It really was lovely to have so many visitors." Over 180 grans. took part in a day of activity including crafts, working with children in the classroom and seeing the sports teams perform. There was school lunch, carol singing and a photograph taken with grandchildren. Robert Wright had travelled up from Bristol to visit grandchildren Rachael and Robert. "I've been to

sports days over the last five years, but it was the first time in the classroom," he said. "The school never fails to impress me. The raport and affection the children have for the head and the staff is tremendous. When I was at school the head was aloof and the teachers were not so involved." Six year old Jodie Baker had both grandmothers in school. "It's such a lovely school," said Gladys Flowers. "There are so many mums involved in different activities. I cannot remember parents coming beyond the school gate in my day." Christine Taylor said Jodie did not want her grans to leave. "Schools are so much better nowadays. The children and teachers work so well together."

A project which encourages people to help each other without payment is looking for new members. Backscratchers, which was launched a couple of years ago in Moredon, is now expanding and wants more members to join it. Anyone can join, no money changes hands except where raw materials have to be purchased, the tax office has no interest, nor does social security if taking part does not affect availability for work. Members of Backscratchers undertake to do jobs for other members on a voluntary basis in return for payment in 'scratches.' Each job has a 'scratch value' based on skills, risk, responsibility and 'yuks,' which takes account of weather, time taken and level of grubbiness. The values are decided by three other members, often including the scratcher, and

Youngsters at Shaw Ridge School were exposed to the words of England's most famous playwrite when the English Shakespeare Company spent an exciting day working on Twelfth Night, the bard's study of love, gender, mistaken identity and cross dressing. The five actors put Key Stage 2 the children had a a most fantastic children through an intensive, fast experience. "The company really paced sessions, discussing the brought Shakespeare alive. The meaning and relationships in the children were exhilarated by the play, acting out scenes and trying end of the day. As one said, 'it was out stage sword fighting. only two and a half hours, but Headteacher Keith Burke said what a two and a half hours!"

Pied Piper tells morale story The junior aged children in years 3 to 6 at Tregoze School filled the stage for the grand finale of the Pied Piper of Hamlyri at the end of last term. The fairy tale story of a corrupt council who broke their promise to pay a stranger for ridding their town of a plague of rats and saw all the children disappear, was adapted by headteacher Steve Menham and told through song, music and drama. All the children were involved and every teacher was expected to dress up and play a part.

Firstly this month, I am pleased to announce the winner of West Swindon library's Teenage Week prize draw. The winner, Gareth Doherty of Pinehurst, won a designer T shirt supplied by Strike Clothing of Swindon Market Hall. Well done Gareth. And now for something a bit different... Regular users will know that West Swindon library has an exhibition area where a wide variety of displays, exhibitions and activities take place. For those who may not know, the exhibition area is situated near the out counter and exit door of the library.

It is available for hire to local groups or individuals who wish to reach the local community. Many people take advantage of the facilities and find it a good venue to display work and promote services. During 1996 there were many different exhibitions, from paintings to photographs an'wooden furniture. December saw artwork by pupils from Brook Field Primary school. The 1997 programme already includes a variety of different exhibitions from photography to Swindon Opera and Amnesty International. For more details about exhibitions read this article each month!

Safe Swindon Project launched by the Princess Royal a year ago. Run by Druglink and trainers from Cascade peer education, the training weekend impressed Andrew Davies from Freshbrook. "I wasn't sure about going, but I learnt a lot. They took an open approach; they were not saying 'don't take drugs.' It was about the dangers of what you could be getting into and the precautions you should take." The group have to plan their own weekend and also raise some of the cash to run it. But it's not all work said Emma Skett. "There will be 20 places and we plan to have fun. We'll have drugs education sessions and there's a pool room, football, karaoke and video. Safe youth place wanted At present the Youth Unit opens on two evenings a week when young people can drop in for advice and information. But the youngsters are calling for the offices located on the ground floor to be opened every evening and at the weekends. The Link Centre has been an attraction to teenagers ever since it opened 11 years ago and there is often tension between older users trying to enter the building through a throng of people hanging around outside. The Centre employs security staff to try and ensure there is acceptable behaviour. There has never been a low cost place for young people to go. But the takeover of ground floor offices by Wiltshire youth services has brought demands to open the facilities for longer hours. Angela Baker, 15, said she had been a regular outside the Link Centre for a couple of years. "It's a central meeting place, but we know a lot of teenagers hanging

around creates a certain impression. We want somewhere to go to be with our friends which doesn't cost, where we won't be moved on by security, and where we can feel safe." The youngsters say the Youth Unit could have a pool table, TV, music and refreshments. They think more people would use the information facilities which have been developed.

Wanted! Newly-weds One of the world's most influential psychologists is looking for 200 newly-wed couples who are prepared to travel to Cardiff for an interview about the early years of their marriage. Professor Frank Fincham of the University of Wales, Cardiff, is internationally recognised for his research into personal relationships. His latest governmentfunded investigation focuses on the the relationship between newly-weds: what makes them happy? How do they stay happy? What kind of problems creep into their relationship and why? How does their expectation or perception of their partner or their relationship change during the first few years of marriage? Through understanding early marriage, the research will ultimately help to improve marriage counselling training. "At the intervention stage, marriage guidance counsellors are adept at helping couples to overcome the factors that lead to marital distress, but we know little about the positive factors that lead to marital happiness," said Professor Fincham. "Our work is aimed at giving counsellors the means to help couples build these positive factors into their relationship. "Pre-marital counselling, such as is offered by the Catholic Church, is a means of preventing distress in a marriage, yet we know

little about how a relationship develops overtime. If we knew more about this, we could develop more informed and more powerful prevention programmes." Professor Fincham has conducted similar studies in the USA, but in Britain, despite marriage being as popular as ever, he is finding it difficult to make contact with couples who are just about to 'tie the knot', or have recently done so. Newly-weds who are willing to take part in the research will have an initial three hour interview at the University's School of Psychology, for which a fee will be paid. Thereafter, there will be follow-up interviews once a year over the next three years, for which the couples will also receive a fee. All interviews willbe conducted in an informal but professional manner and all information given will be treated in strict confidence. Couples who are willing to take part in the research, should either be approaching their wedding or be in the first six months of marriage. The Disability Information Service based in the Shaftesbury Centre, Swindon, recently celebrated its first anniversary having received nearly 450 enquiries from disabled people, their families, carers and professionals who work with them. DIS is a free, independent and confidential service operated by volunteers who are are aware of and sensitive to disability issues. The service offers someone to listen and support callers as well as to provide information from an extensive national and local database.

The volunteers give as much time as necessary to each individual enquiry. Very often the question asked may indicate the need for a wide and varied range of information and we will then search on their behalf. The information covered ranges from aids and equipment, education, employment and training, sports and leisure, holidays, mobility, respite care and much more. A recent enquirer wanted to know about facilities for disabled people to go hot air ballooning. Getting ready for summer The GWR majorettes are looking for new members for the 1997 season, writes Tammy Parsons. The majorettes is a fun and exciting way to make new friends and to go to lots of places. We are a group of girls aged between 7 and 14, who practice together every Thursday evening at Greendown school from 6pm to 730pm. Right now, we are getting ready for another fun packed season, which involves teaching new people how to march and do displays or perhaps to learn a musical instrument. During the summer we perform what we have learnt, at various places like villages fetes, carnivals Majorettes at the ready, rearfrotn left and theme parks. We do not have Lorraine Brown, Nicki Winslow, to pay the entry fee to these places, Joanne Piper, Amanda Willis, Anika just a small coach fare. Even the Boyd. Government backs Greendown THAMES WOOD West Swindon's secondary school is one of two in Swindon to be selected as a pilot school to develop GNVQ (General National Voca- VETERINARY CLINICS tional Qualifications) courses for 14 and 19 year olds. Over the last three years Greendown has built close links with New College to develop Engineering courses, and with Swindon College to develop Business Studies.

The successful bid to the Department for Education and Employment will attract extra funds to fully integrate foundation to advanced courses. Swindon MP Simon Coombs, who supported the school's application to the DfEE, said he was very pleased that it had been successful. "GNVQ is of great importance to a considerable number of young people who will benefit from continuing education. I welcome the initiative and am confident in the improvement in the employability of many Swindon students." Greendown headteacher Ian Matthews said inclusion into the scheme meant the school will be able offer an even wider range of educational opportunities. 'We're delighted that our close links with Swindon College and New College can now be strengthened. "Students will be able to start GNVQs studies at age 14 which they will continue at college. This will better prepare them for work, modern apprenticeships and higher education. It will help us work towards national training targets for the millenium."
