For readers new to the magazine, The Link has proved itself an invaluable source of local news, views and information. Its relevance to the communities it serves, the quality of appearance and easy to read format makes the magazine unrivalled in the town. It is gratifying to hear so many people say they read The Link from 'cover to cover' because it provides the vital information they need. And we're glad to play our part in sustaining 'community spirit.' The fact that we have been successful through difficult economic times says a great deal about the confidence advertisers have in the

I was delighted to hear that the circulation of The Link from January is to be increased to include the Haydon Wick and Woodhall Park areas of north Swindon.

Camp conditions 'dreadful' Two Swindon women who spent two weeks in December working with refugees in and around the Croatian capital Zagreb described conditions as dreadful. Claire Walkley fromcrange Park and Katherine Dunbar, pictured on the front page of the December's Link magazine, helped distribute supplies from South Wales and Swindon (see right). By the time the lorries arrived, they had lived on bread on water forfive days as there was so little in the Varzidan camp. They worked with mothers and babies helping with basic hygene and child care. They also made an assessment of what further supplies are required for future aid convoys. Claire and Katherine also worked with wounded civilians in Zagreb and were shocked by the injuries suffered and inadequately treated. They stayed in a safe house with Muslim women living in isolation and fear of the Croats living around them. There are fifteen beds in two rooms and a small kitchen. "The women are looking after themselves and their children and don't go out much because of the abuse they get," said Claire. "They don't have any money and sometimes get a box of food from the United Nations." Clair" herself was threatened as locals thought she was Muslim. Claire and Katherine want to help the women in the house and are planning to return with supplies of clothing, medicine and food. They need a lorry and financial back-up. The West Swindon based International Family Group, would like to thank Link magazine readers for responding to their appeal last month for supplies they were collecting for the Varzidan refugee camp. The group collected some sixty boxes of plates, cups, tinned food, hygene and medical supplies which were collected on 11 December by a fourteen vehicle convoy organsed by the Cardiff Rotary Club. Three tons of food had to be left behind in Wales and boxes of clothes had to be off loaded in Swindon to make room for much needed medical and food supplies. Another trip is being planned for early April. Joint organiser Shala Davapanah said, "we would like to thank all those people who have helped us with donations outside supermarkets and those who rang us up."

A remarkable family reunion took place just before Christmas when Joan Hillard-Reid from Beaulieu Close, Toothifi met her son Kieth again for the first time in 47 years. Kieth, who was taken to South Africa in 1947, thought his mother had been killed in the war. Joan kept her memories to herself for over 40 years and did not believe she would ever see him again. But life took on a new excitement for 76-year-old Joan since Kieth surprised her with a telephone call on 6 November. A chance remark by Keith's wife to his only surviving British relative in late 1992 eventually led to the joyful reunion justbefore Christmas after a search via the Red Cross. The story caught media imagination and Joan with Chris, her son from her second marriage, and his wife Janet, who also live in Toothill, were trailed to Heathrow by TV crews on 22 December. There they were met by reporters and cameras from national papers and TV companies to capture the happy event. "ltwasa real scrum," saidjoan. "I didn't realise there would be so much interest. I lost count of how many interviews I gave whilst we waited Kieth's flight to arrive. "The airport gave us a room so that we could meet Kieth privately. We hugged each other and he said 'I love you.' It was so lovely." Kieth, contracted to a magazine in South Africa, refused to pose for photographs with his mum. He did admit that one of the first

things he told Joan was that he still had a scar on his leg caused by a hot water bottle in his pram when he was a baby 50 years ago. "l've felt guilty about that bum all these years," said Joan. "But all is forgiven. It's wonderful to have him back."

Junior come back Toothill's junior youth dub for 6 to 12 year olds makes a welcome return to the Toothill Farm Centre on Thursday 13 January. It ran for 12 weeks during the autumn, but organisers hope to make the club a permanent feature. However, more volunteers are needed to supervise and organise activities for children. Youth and senior citizens get together at Freshbrook Community Centre

Freshbrook youngsters and local pensioners got together on 22 December for a party. Teenagers who meet at the community centre under the supervision of 84 year old pensioner Marie Brett have organised a Christmas party for the last three years. "They were not sure if they would hold one after all the bad publicity Freshbrook youth from the local newspaper," said Marie. "But we decided we couldn't let that stop us. The young people are not a fraction as bad as they're made out." As for the party, "We've alla good time," said Millie Jackson from Prince Rupert Court, Freshbrook.

Tenth anniversary event planned Freshbrook Community Centre will be ten years old later this year and plans are being made for a summer celebration on 11 June. The centre is looking for volun-

After School Club faces closure Westlea After School Club could close this year, unless major grants are forthcoming from business or Thamesdown Council. The club, which opened in 1991 and now caters for thirty children on five afternoons a week, was launched afterthe Council provided a building next to Westlea Primary School and a grant to match a £10,000 over two years donation from West Swindon based National Power. Other company and charity donations were also gained. However all could be lost if more money is not found said Julie Bailey, chairperson of the club's volunteer

management committee. "The club has met a great need to support Westlea families. It has enabled both parents to get jobs, many have come off IncomeSupport, some have been able to take up training courses. It's surprising how many single parents there are in this area. "We don't want to return to the 'latch-key kid' situation which prompted local people to campaign for the club in the first place." The club has written to over 60 companies and trusts locally and nationally and has received a cheque for £500 towards the running costs of E15,000 a year needed to keep the

club going five afternoons a week In the short term attendance fees for children are likely to rise. LocalcouncifiorMauriceFarming said Thamesdown would continue with its £5,000 a year grant and every effort was being made to give more as budget plans became clearer towards the end of the financial year. "1 know the uncertainty is unhelpful to the dub which definitely meets a need. But nobody can guarantee their full grant applicationcan be met," said Coun. Fanning. 'The amount of grant aid is limited and we are underpressure to meet needs across the town."

Christmas cheer came to Westlea School in a big way when the record breaking takings of £3,400 from the annual Christmas fayre on 27 November were counted. School secretary Yvonne Adams said everybody was very surprised by the total. "We had a tremendous number of donations from parents and many put in a great deal of hard work making cakes and craft items. The day itself was very crowded. Read all about it! Haydon Wick Writers' Group have another success with their latest anthology 'Write to be Read -2'. This local group has produced a fifty page booklet of poetry and prose covering everything from football fever to nude modelling. Attractively produced, with illustrations and potted biographies of the writers, this little book can be found in the Link Library or Waters tones priced at £2. Haydon Wick Writers was setup in November1991 to encourage creative writing and to develop links with other community groups. Its founder, Mrs Susan Mayer says "We are a support group with speakers, competitions, projects and an information service for anyone interested in creative writing. Criticismis given when asked otherwise it is up to the individual to take their work as far as they wish". In conjunction with the Seven Fields Conservation Group, Haydon Wick Writers runs an annual literary competition, and organises a children's creative writing workshop every year. Their play 'The Ballad of Ria Ladd' has been performed around the Borough by the Haydon Players and been heard on BBC Wiltshire Sound and the Group contributes items to Talking Newspapers for the Blind.

Head turns to playwriti ng Youngsters atGreenmeadowSchool entertained parents with three short Christmas plays. The Infants put on 'The toys that didn't like Christmas' whilst the top infants and juniors performed 'PeterPan at Christmas', a musical written by headteacher Robert Webb which had Peter and Tinkerbell rescuingFa ther Christma s'toy making machine which had been stolen by Captain Hook. Mr Webb also composed all the songs. The top juniors gave a new twist to the Cinderella story with Prince Charming as an aspiring shoe salesman who charged the girl he was looking for - Boilerella - £3 to try on the glass shoe. Nearly £500 was raised from the two performances which will be spent on Maths equipment. The proceeds from the Christmas disco organised by the Parent Teacher Association has been added to the autumn disco so that a colour printer can be bought for the computer obtained with Tesco vouchers. The PTA is collecting items for an auction to take place in February.

The 13 year-old Greendown School pupil is a previous winner of the British Novices Championship and currently holds the British Primary title. She is the first person to win all the ladies junior titles.

Black Belts lead club Members of the Swindon Ju-Jitsu Club, which meets at Greendown School, is now led by more highly qualified instructors. At a grading session held by the British Ju-Jitsu Association, Baj Bharj and Steve Cole achieved second Dan black belt qualification, whilst Dave Hussel gained a first Dan. Eleven other pupils from the club attended the grading and the high standard of instruction was commented upon. The Greendown based club meets on Monday and Thursday evenings, juniors from 630pm to 7.45pm, adultsbetween8pmand 10pm. Boys and girls, men and women of all ages can join. Taking responsibility for local services Councillor Tony Mayer, Leader of Thamesdown Council, comments on the Borough's move to end the confusion in local government by taking on all of its services As West Swindon has developed, local people have had to cope with two local councils. At best this has been confusing and at worst wasteful and inefficient. But now there is a chance to change things for the better. Following the poll tax fiasco the Government began a review of local government boundaries with the intention of replacing the present two-council system with a single council for each area. This review will be carried out by the Local Government Commission who will come to Thamesdown to take evidence on the case fora change from organisations and individuals. They will go away, digest this, and come back with recommendations. The final decision will be made by the Government towards the end of 1994 and the new Council will be up and running in 1996 or 1997. For Thamesdown, this is an opportunity to build on what we have already achieved. Existing areas of expertise such as Leisure and Arts

can work together with new areas such as schools to everyone's mutual benefit. I find the whole idea very exciting and Jam keen for us all to have the chance to make it work. I see this as an important step towards the goal of 'City Status' for Thamesdown. This would be a proper tribute to the many different Tony Mayer

The 1980s boomin prices followed by the slump in the early 1990s has left many households with a mortgage worth more than their home or saddled with a property that they cannot afford to sell. Often the problems are made worse by everyday events - perhaps when a regular earner loses a job or when a couple decides to start a family. The path into defaulting on payments is all too easy when jobs are scarce or when households have to meet unexpected expenditures. There area surprising number of part-time jobs available says new West Swindon Job Centre marketing officer Adrian Embling. In early December there were 160 part-time vacancies which the employment service was having difficulty filling for a variety of reasons. Adrian acknowledges that some people cannot afford to come off benefit, but he also thinks that many do not realise that the employment service deals in part-time vacancies. "There's been a lot of emphasis on finding work for the long term unemployed over the last couple of years and perhaps this has given the false impression that we don't deal in part-time work What's more, you don't have to be on benefit to visit the Job Centre." Adrian, who joined the West Swindon Job Centre in September, is responsible for meeting clients looking for work and also for contacting employers to place jobs with the employment service. He said part-time work is classified as jobs under 30 hours a week and vacancies include cleaning, catering, clerical and shop work and tele-sales. Adrian said the number of job opportunities was increasing and there should be a job for anyone willing to be flexible in what they go for. He added that the same informa-

Lydiards Playgroup Maggie May writes about a playgroup featured for the first time in The Link The Lydiards Playgroup meets at Lydiard Millicent Parish Hall, opposite All Saint's Church. We have sessions on Monday, Thursday and Friday mornings 9.15am-12.15pm, and Tuesday 12.45pm-3.15pm. Our staffing currently comprises of a supervisor, an assistant supervisor and a special needs assistant, supplemented by one mother a session on a rota basis. The children can start in the term they are three and stay until they start primary school. We have re cently started a 'rising five' option in our Friday sessions to prepare children for school. Lydiards Playgroup is accredited by the Preschool Playgroup Association and we have good links with Lydiard Millicent Church of England Primary School who provide materials and advice for the 'rising fives' sessions. We also visit the school on occasions to see assemblies, productions etc. The Playgroup is run by a dedicated committee (aren't they all!) who hold various fundraisingevents through the year. Since its formation, the Thamesdown Animal Sanctuary has slowly accumulated funds through raffles, boot sales, dog shows etc and has gained a lot expertise, some first hand in handling animals. It also has a dog rescue section in the community, fostering them and then rehoming them into new homes, which are monitored by regular visits. Some new owners are now asking for second dogs because the dogs are matched to the owner's requirements and lifestyles and are all handed over in the best of health after a long stay at foster homes. The Sanctuary is now looking for land to build a centre. There are also plans to open a shop in Swindon, subject to finding a favourable location with the help from Swindon's friendly retail property agents. I hope you all survived the Christmas period and have made your New Year resolutions liking taking more care of your newly acquired possessions, videos,TVs and the like by security codingthemand recording serial numbers. As with last month, there is no significant pattern of crime to tell you about, so in line with the season of seeing out the old and bringing in the new, lets just look at the previous 12 months and put them into some kind of perspective. I understand that The Link's is now being distributed in Greenmeadow and Haydon Wick, so lets include those areas.
