Secondary schools see cash slashed
Star swimmer Sharron helps launch homeless support campaign Two local schools combined with a building company and Olympic swimmerSharron Davies to launch a fund-raising drive in aid of the homeless in December. Devizes based builder Lovell is celebrating twenty-one years of working in partnership with local councils and housing associations across the country to provide lowcost housing. Staff at Lovell Partnership offices across the UK are being asked to hold sponsored swims in aid of Shelter, the charity for the homeless. Sharron Davies was the star performer at two events on 8 December to get the fund-raising effort off the ground. At the Prinnels, Shaw, where Lovells, Thamesdown Council and Knightstone Housing Association are building 109 homes for rent, she helped bury a time capsule containing present day artifacts including school work by children from
Salt Way Primary School on the theme 'Homes for Future Generations.' Later Sharron took to the Link Centre pool and raced a team of youngsters from Oliver Tomkins School. She also passed on swimming tips to the children and talked with parents about her life as a champion swimmerat a lunchtime reception. At present there are over 400 homeless families in temporary accommodation in Thamesdown, and more than 5,000 people on the housing waiting list. Thamesdown Council housing chairman Des Moffat said, "future generations will ask why so many people were allowed to be homeless when so many homes were empty and so many building workers were out of work." Wiltshire County Council Education Committee cut a total of £4 million from its budget for 1992/ 93 on 11 December in an attempt to balance the books. Secondary schools suffer the most with a E2 million cut. Half a million is being taken from Sixth Forms,therest fromlI - 16schools. Each school will have its budget allocation from Wiltshire cut according to the number of children on role. An average 800 pupil school will lose around £40,000. All the Swindon secondary schools are looking at staff redundancies. This was confirmed by Greendown School headteacher Ian Matthews who said schoolgovernors will be consideringhow savings can be made. "There will be difficult choices. Savings will have tobe made in the purchase of books and equipment and there is a possibility that staff will have to be made redundant." • Greendown parents start voting from 15 January on whether the school should become 'self-governing' by seeking Grant Maintained Status.

Our time capsule Tony Newton of Salt Way School describes the day when work by his class was buried and he met Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies A minibus came and picked us up at sule. Pam takes a share of neighbourhood work job Community worker PamPixton has joined Toothill Neighbourhood Worker Miriam Minty in a job share arrangment so that Miriam can spend more time with her baby. Pam is well known by many newcomers across West Swindon as the person who visited them with useful information soon after moving into their new house. As the rate of new buildings has declined, she has been based in the Link Centre assisting with the administrationof the Community Suite and helping community groups establish themselves. She has been one of the coordinators of the Grub Club lunch group for out of work adults and has been helping the Fres hbrook Community Centre pensioners lunch club keep going. Pam's time will be split between Toothill and the Link Centre where she will continue her informationgiving role. She runs a coffee morning every Tuesday between lOam and 12 noonfornew arrivals to West

A youngster from Freshbrook has been fighting his way to the top, collecting many trophies on the way. David Pixton, above, from Lambert Close has had a sucessful year in Tae Kwon Do competitions. He fights in the junior lightweight category and has come first in the West of England competition and third in the English championships. In September he took second place in the British championships. David, a Year 8 student at Greendown, is a member of the TAGB Club based at Croft Sports Centre in Old Town. He puts his success down to increased aggression. "In the past I was getting injured because I wasn't trying hard enough," said David. "I'm more aggressive now and getting better." He is hoping for better performances and will be training hard during 1993.

Journey through the musicals at school Xmas show

Scout hike it across the downs The Marlborough Downs was the venue for a hike by many of the Scout packs in the District on the 5 and 6 December. Scouts from the 1st Westlea Scout Pack hiked around a wet and muddy course, but everyone who took part seemed to enjoy themselves. The scouts spent the night of Saturday in the Marlborough Scout Hut before commencing the second day of the hike. The sodden and dirty, but happy scouts, returned to West
Swindon atthe end of the event. No doubt plenty of washing machines were working overtime on Sunday evening to cope with cleaning all the muddy kit. The following weekend the scouts had the opportunity to demonstrate their sporting prowess in the 'Super Scout Sports Evening' held on the 12 December at the Croft Sports Centre. A variety of sporting activities had been arranged and all those who took part acquitted themselves well.
The evenings of the 8, 9 and 10 of December saw the culmination of months of effort come to fruition at the Westlea School Christmas production entitled 'A journey through Musicals,' written by headteacher Neil Griffiths. The whole venture was a spectacular extravaganza of entertainment - a very ambitious project which, due to the amazing hard work and dedication of the pupils, staff and parents, succeeded beyond all expectation. Every class was involved and each was represented by its own particular musical, seven in all. A genie called 'Lacisum' (musical backwards) took two children called Ben and Lucy on a journey through musicals beginning with 'Bugsy Malone' then through 'Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang', 'MaxyPoppins', 'The Wizard of Oz', 'Joseph and His AmazingTechnicolour Dreamcoat', 'The Sound of Music' until they reached the final musical 'The King
and F. The whole 'journey' was extremely colourful with brilliant costumes and scenery and all the songs were beautifully performed. All the teachers tookpart and were the nuns in 'The Sound of Music'. Sister Gertrude looked remarkably like Mr Griffiths, as did one of the belly dancers in the 'Joseph ..' musical. Could this be the start of a new career? Everyone agreed that the whole performance was magnificent with everyone giving of their best.

On 6 December, 1992 Stephen Bizley swapped his nice warm bed for running vest and shorts to compete in the Purton Half Marathon. A novice runner, Stephen had decided to take part in the Half Marathon to raise funds to provide Westlea Playgroup, where his son, Michael is a pupil, with much needed outdoor play equipment. He had hoped to obtain sponsorship from some of the large companies in the area, some of whom specialise in children's toys, but sadly, none was forthcoming. Nevertheless, sponsorship from the Westlea Playgroup together with personal sponsorship from Stephen's family, friends and colleagues raised over QOO and it is hoped that with this some new bicycles and other equipment can be obtained.
Stephen completed the course in an excellent time of 1 hour 36 minutes for which he proudly received a medal for taking part. His months of preparation had paid off and he had achieved his aim. He now hopes to be able to take part in the London Marathon. The staff, parents and children of Westlea Playgroup are greatly indebted to Stephen for his achievement which is much appreciated. The disappointing sponsorship from thecompanies which had been approached was probably as much due to the timingof theevent, which came so close to the 'Children in Need' appeal, as to the recession. It is to be hoped that it did not reflect lack of confidence in Stephen's ability to be able to accomplish his aim to finish the Half Marathon.

fls, The year was 1985 and I had just finished showing round the third clergy couple I was hoping to interest in becoming the new Vicar of Shaw. I pointed out the proposed vicarage, the wayside chapel with its congregation of 6, the first houses of Ramleaze receiving their roofs, and had enthused about the possibilities. But they had very politely and firmly declined the challenge! Not so, Keith and Shirley Boxall. I was relieved but not altogether surprised. A reputation for getting things done had gone before him. Eighteen years with British Aerospace at Weybridge took him to quality control inspector. In the life of his local Church, he served many years on the Church Council and as a churchwarden. After training for ordination at Trinity College, Bristol, Keith served his title at St Peter's, Staines, and something of that patron Saint's character rubbed off on him. It wasn't long before people became aware of this large, impulsive, hardworking and generous-hearted cleric in their midst. In complete contrast, but with her own brand of fire, Helen Drummond came to share

Children turn into toys Youngsters at Jellytots playgroup, which meets at Shaw Community Centre, rehearsed for six weeks to put on a twenty minute play for parents in December. in the new Shaw ministry, and they managed to workout a creative and complimentary relationship. Keith threw himself into the design and construction of the church for the village centre. Striding through the footings, pouring over plans, finding ways through problems, he still found time to be a pastor to everyone on site. Only 7 years have passed since those early days. Shaw village is both a flesh-and-blood and bricksand-mortar community. He would be the first to say that many other dedicated folk have laboured with him over those years to help to give it a soul as well - but in leadership there are plenty of lonely moments when the load seems onerous. To his credit, he leaves behind a firmly established new church with a membership approaching 100 and a building which is host to a wide range of community groups. Keith is not too big to be missed! His many friends in West Swindon will miss the first family at Shaw Vicarage a great deal when they go, but have many reasons to be thankful for all they have done here. We wish them well in their new ministry. I don't think I will warn Mangotsfield about what's coming!

During his time in England he had visited Holy Trinity Church in Shaw and described his life in Africa, talking, among other things, of drought, illness resulting from polluted water, AIDS and lack of financial resources.

In the meantime Raphael had to wait for many weeks for the ship to arrive, the bike to be off loaded and then for the various bureaucratic hurdles of taxing the bike to be overcome. The final arrival of The Bike was shown in photographs sent back to Shaw with thanks, which show the effort has been well worthwhile. He tells us he is now able to cover his parish much more easily.
The difference between his expexpe rience and ours is enormous and rience one point that made a deep impression was his need to move around his huge area, spending hours on trips to the next church service or village, carrying an old push bike over muddy unsurfaced roads as often as it carried him. In December 1991 the Church at Shaw decided that their Christmas gift to Raphael would be to promise to provide him with some motorised transport fit for the African terrain. A trail bike was purchased and sent on the next available transport ship. During 1992 the Church has been raising money to repay the

Freda read us excerpts froma number of books -children's, poetry, biography, humorous, all of which we enjoyed. The books were on sale too, so our members went home with quite a few prezzies! We have a change of venue for future meetings - well be in the Sunshine Hall at Westlea School. New books on the shelves As it is a new year I thought I would devote my entire column to new books. We have been very quiet in the library recently so I hope these new attractions will bring all the lapsed readers back in to see us. I'll start with one of the most popular areas of our stock - the biographies; and a very mixed bunch we have had - something for all tastes. Firstly an autobiography by one of our most popular sports commentators, Harry 'know what I mean' Carpenter. It is described as a witty and revealing book in which he recalls stories about the great characters of boxing, golf and tennis. Of course Frank Bruno has a starring role but so also does Muhammed Ali with whom Harry has had a great friendship over the years. By the way of a contrast we have a new biography of Clint Eastwood with the intriguing title "Sexual Cowboy." It is written by Douglas Thompson who is described as a Top Hollywood Watcher. The blurb on the back promises that the reader will learn about 'his attitudes, his loves, his hates, his heartaches, his passions and his desires'. It sounds irresistible to any fan! The final biography is even more outrageous; the autobiography of Lindi St Clair, or Miss Whiplash entitled "it's Only A Game". Britain's best known and most outspo-

It covers table and bed linen as well as curtains and blinds - so is a very useful book. For more unusual crafts "Microwave Craft Magic" by Marjie Lambert is for everyone who has tired of merely cooking food in their microwave. This book will show you how to dry flowers, make pot pourri, papier mache and clay and dough models. A very novel craft book. 'A' level work on display at library With Christmas celebrations well and truly over 1993 brings with it the daunting thought of mock exams,and project deadlines formany of this year's A-Level students. One such is Louise Wilkes from Grange Park, who has been working on an A level Communication Studies project since last April. "My brief was to design something that could fulfil a need within the community; after exploring all my options, I decided to promote voluntary work in Swindon", said Louise. Louise, who is currently involved with voluntary work herself for 'Thamesdown Talking Newspaper for the Blind' and 'Hospital Radio', established her project a fterresearch conducted around Swindon last summer. She found that a lot of people were reluctant to get involved with voluntary work because of the way it had been stereotyped as an activity 'just for retired people to fill up their spare time' Despite the fact that 68% of the people she surveyed had done voluntary work atone time or another, only 32% knew that Swindon had its own volunteer bureau, open to anyone who would like to find out more orget involved with voluntary work. She also discovered that 92% of the people who took part in the sur-

The display will be at West Swindon library from 5 January and, in Louise's own words: "offers a fresh look into an area that people are often reluctant to explore".

In case none of these books are to your taste I must stress that these are just a small selection from our new stock which covers a wide range of tastes and interests. Please do come and take- a look, you may be surprised at what you find. Also this month we have a display of artwork by Wiltshire school children. This is a regular display in the library and I am told it is well worth seeing. I would also welcome any suggestions for this column. Next month I will do a children's book feature, but if you have any burning questions about the library please let me know or write them in our comments book and I will try to answer them in a future column. O.K. you Jeremy Beadles out there! You've spent hundreds of pounds on a camcorder but you're not getting the results you want. Professional video maker Jim Strutton from Grange Park, pictured below, offers some useful tips
If your new camcorder is not giving you the results that you wanted, and the funny bits you hoped to send to Jeremy Beadle are not up to much, then the following tips should help you. Holding, zooming & panning Keep the camcorder steady using either a brace, to support the camcorder on your shoulder orchest, or better still a tripod or monopod. Avoid hand holding the camcorder wherever possible. Most camcorders have a zoom lens, which you should use very sparingly. Look at the scene in the viewfinder use zoom to frame the picture before you record. Keep the use of full zoom to a minimum as it will magnify any vibration or jerky movement. It takes a lot of experience to pan smoothly on full zoom so keep to static scenes. Pain shots work best on wide angle and even then they are quite difficult, so practice.

If you want a moving zoom shot, use it so that you zoom out from a point, as this is easier to achieve. Rehearse the shot before you record, checking that everything is right. Once you have mastered zooming out, try zooming in using the professional method. Zoomin to the scene, set the focus and then turn off the autofocus, if fitted to your camcorder. Zoom out to your starting scene and then record, taking care to zoom back in to exactly where you set the focus. Avoid panning, whilst you are zooming and remember to rehearse before you record. Fixing the focus at the extreme end of the scene, ensures that the whole shot will be in sharp focus. Lighting Modern camcorders have incredible low light ability; you may have bought a particular model on the strength of it. However, all cam-

corders work better in bright lighting - contrast and colour separation are better and the focus range is greater, due to something called "depth of field"(which is a subject for another day). Now this does not mean that you need special video lighting. What you buy, is one or two of the lights that are sold for lighting building sites, commonly called "Site Lights". They use 500 watt halogen bulbs and can be bought for around £30, including a stand and 3 metres of power lead. One will illuminate an average room, especially if you can bounce the light off a white ceiling or another surface. Warning: they get quite hot, so keep them away from surfaces and curtains. Make sure that the surface you bounce light off is white, or your pictures will get a colour cast. I cannot recommend the small battery powered lights that are supplied with some camcorders. If you need a portable light, then get the type that has a separate battery pack and at least a 100 watt bulb. Sound Most people are disappointed with the sound from their camcorder. The microphones fitted to most are a compromise. They are good for picking up general background noise, like traffic, but beyond that they are hopeless. If you want to record speech, then there are three ways to go about it. To record one person you need a simple "Tie Pin" microphone at about £15. Place this on the person to be recorded, plug into your camcorder and you are away. For recording a group of people, you can buy a directional microphone, that fits on a boom on top of your camcorder. Prices vary, but a good one may cost £70. It picks up people speaking a few feet in front of you quite clearly, but you need to keep in close; it is no good standing back and using the zoom. However, if you can arrange to have an assistant as your "Sound Person", then there is an even better, cheaper solution. Buy a "Super Cardoid Dynamic Microphone," at about £20. Then get the longest broom handle you can. Fix the microphone to the end of the handle using insulating tape. Your "Sound Person" holds the microphoneabove the heads of the people speaking, just out of shot. With practice it works extremely well, in fact it is the way that professionals record sound. Don't waste money on a radio microphone, I am afraid that the ones sold for camcorders are not much use, as they pick up interference and have a limited range. Thecure for the noise made by the wind is one of the microphone cov-
ers produced by a company called Rycote. They look like the fur from a child's fluffy toy, but they work very well. If you saw Michael Palm on 'Pole to Pole", the way he said his microphone was waterproofed, is perfectly true and recommended if you are using a microphone in wet conditions. Tape Practice makes perfect, souse your camcorder and try different techniques, before you get to record the family event that cannot be repeated. Buy an extra tape and keep it for practice and experiment. Always use the very best quality tape, it helps your camcorder last longer and you get better videos. Batteries The two enemies of a camcorder battery are overcharging and lack of use. Rather than using an expensive battery discharger, just run it flat using the camcordera nd then give it a slow charge. You need about three times battery duration for the amount of recording you plan, so spares are a worthwhile investment. Keep charged spares in a warm pocket before you use them on a cold day, togetextra life. Lookout foralternative batteries for your camcorder, they can work out about half the price of the manufacturers own brand. A training offer Always take your camcorder and its manual with you when buying any accessory, so you can try it before you leave the shop. I hope that you find these tips useful, but there is a limit to the advice I can give in an article of this length. Therefore, I plan to offer a Saturday training course, whereyou can pickup practical tips and share ideas with other camcorder users. After all, if you have paid out several hundred pounds on equipment it must be worth £15 to £20 to learn how to get the best from it. Kevin actually makes it to the airport with his family. There's a man inthequeuewho Kevin thinks is his dad, but it's another man with the same coat. The family is
going to Florida, butthe man Kevin follows goes to New York. So when he got off the plane, he couldn't find his family. So he walks off into the big city. In the morning he was walking in Central Park and a lady turned round. She was covered in pigeons. Kevin screamed and ran. There is another attack from the wet bandits in Kevin's uncles old disused house. Again Kevin outsmartsthem with all his little tricks. In the end Kevin's mum meets him again, but this time by the Rockefeller Centre's giant Christmas tree (she knows Kevin has a thing about them). We really enjoyed this movie and would give it 10 out of 10.

The Workers Educational Association, founded in 1903, was a pioneer in the field of adult education. Swindon is continuing the pioneering tradition in having one of the few women's branches, run for and by women, in the country. Thecourses provided covera wide range of women's experiences and needs, from leisure interests such as basket making, through health related courses such as aromatherapy, reflexology and stress management, to more practical skills such as car maintenance and DIY. Also organised are courses to help with employment such as New Opportunities for Women, Introduction to Technology and assertiveness training. The aim is to ensure the courses are relevant to the needs of women
in Thamesdown. The Management Committee consists of women who have been on previous courses and feedback is encouraged from current students. The branch Development Worker is always actively seeking new ideas from the wider community. The branch is moving to new premises in January in order to involve even more women. The new offices will be at the Health Hydro, Milton Road where there will be a training room, a creche and wheelchair access. Women will still be welcome to drop induringouropening times which are Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 930am -1pm to find out more about our courses, have a chat or browse through our library of books and magazines.

Eighteen year old Link Centre skater David Ings, pictured above, is heading for great things if his latest performances are anything to go by. At the beginning of November he took third place in the British senior championships on his first attempt, after moving up from the junior ranks. His success qualified him as a reserve for the British team going to this month's European Championships in Finland. He represented his country at a skating event in Bulgaria during December. David has been part of the British Olympic squad for a year and he continues to develop under the watchful eye of his coach Lesley Norfolk-Pearce.

Put that New Year's resolution into practice Lee Hogan offers some advice The headache and hassle ofpre-Christmas shopping arc now but a fading memory. You've survived another round of office parties and company do's, devoured a Christmas lunch, which, as usual, left you motionless on the scttcc for four hours clutching your stomach and moaning quietly to yourself. It's now, when the festive season is over, and you start to get some order back into your life, that you and thousands of others like you take stock of your physical well-being. You start with the bathroom scales, the result sends you rushing to the full length mirror in the bedroom, close examination only confirms the worst. The three pounds which you thought you had put on over Christmas is nearer a stone and a half since the summer. You wouldn't mind so much if it was toned muscle, but that doesn't hang from the chin. Toned muscle is not what has accumulated around your waist, hips and thighs. If you're honest with yourself you will FAT. recognise it for what it is Don't panic and go putting yourselfon one of those crash diets, you've tried it before and you know it does not work in the long term. Forget those rapid diets, it's a con. If you had a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, a couple of slices of wholemeal toast and a piece offruit for breakfast, the same for lunch, a healthy low fat meal in the evening, 'you too will see
the weight come off. Look at this logically, fat is simply unused energy stored in various parts of the body. On women it's normally stored in the thighs, abdomen and breasts, for men it's the waist. First thing you need to do if you're unhappy with yourfatty deposits is to make sure you don't add to them unnecessarily. Cut down on foods such as cakes, sweets, fried food, cream, pies and biscuits, all of which contain a large amount of saturated ft Instead choose foods such as fish, lean meat, fresh fruit and vegetables, skimmed milk, low fat cheese and poultry. Secondly, you know that fat is a form ofcnergy. You can accelerate its reduction by using it. Get up,get out and get
some exercise.
It is an important part of any attempt to lose weight. Regular exercise has many other benefits too, including reducing the risk of heart disease, increasing the efficiency of your heart and lungs, improving your strength and stamina, and don't forget the psychological benefits that exercise can have. The sense of wellbeing and achievement goes a long way in improving your self esteem. Remember it doesn't have to hurt, start slowly and build up your fitness. There are a number of classes and activities to choose from, especially here in West Swindon. Start now, you'll begin tofeci the benefits straight away and in a few months time you could be treating yourself to a whole new wardrobe. Let us know how you get on.

Most of us know we need to be healthy to protect ourselves against heart disease. But leading a healthy lifestyle does not mean living on lettuce and raw carrots, running 20 miles a day, and not drinking alcohol!! It means having enough energy to survive the challenges of work and play. The main factors which affect our health include: 'What we cat, the amount of stress we're under, how much exercise we do regularly, whether or not we smoke, and the amount of alcohol we consume. What we eat Poor diet contributes to many modern diseases - heart disease,diabetes, many cancers, constipation to name but a few. Simple dietary changes can be made easily which will positively effect our health, e.g. eating less sugar and fats, (and for some people salt), and eating more fibre. We can still eat most foods but just prepare and cook them in a slightly different way. Exercise You don't have to play squash or run 20 miles every day! Try to do some form of enjoyable activity walking, cycling, keep fit, swimming, etc. - ideally 3 times a week. Stress Stress is a major issue in our society today. Two-thirds of all visits to doctors' surgeries are with stressrelated symptoms. Positive Stress is called pressure and it is essential to life. However, when it becomes too much it becomes negative and we call it stress. There are many ways of reducing stress, e.g. recognising the source, learning to relax, having some 'me' time where you do what you want to do. Some people find exercise helps to reduce stress.

I write to express my hopes and fears for my daughter's education at Greendown School during l993and beyond. Well done Greendown in 1992 for the greatly improved exam results better than the national and Wiltshire average, in only the second year of public examinations This month Greendown parents will decide whether the school becomes 'self-managing' by becoming Grant Maintained, or whether it remains under the control of Wiltshire. It's a very important decision. For me, the important issues as a parent are: a) Which system offers the best education for my children? b) Which system of management offers the most stability? c) Which system offers more better funding? d) Which system is more accountable to me as a parent? The facts for and against have to be carefully considered and information regarding both sides of the argument is readily available. Unfortunately there is a lot of prejudice in the West Swindon community against Greendown. I believe it is unfounded because the school's management and staff have been working very, very hard in response to public criticism. After all, if you are criticised, you work harder to get things right. But many parents do not recognise this and will not consider the school for their children.
Going Grant Maintained gives the school the chance to show new parents that Greendown's governors backed by present parents have taken responsibility for improving the school. We're not looking to hide behind Wiltshire Eduation Authority. This raises the question, 'Is there a future with Wiltshire?' Coun. Peter Chalke, leader of Wiltshire County Council, gave the answer in the Evening Advertiser on 23 December. 'We do not expect to see many of the secondary schools left in two or three years. As an administration we support the Government's plans for education. We are not actively promoting opting out but we are assisting any school that applies for grant maintained status. We believe in local power and decision making." However, I am worried that politically motivated activists will meddle arid manipulate the facts on opting out for their own political ends. lappeal to parents toconsiderwhat's best for children's education and not to be converted by other people's political prejudices. Let us hope that whatever the outcome of the parent ballot, Greendown school can build on the excellent improvements in 1992. Glenn drops in to present awards On 27September,oneof the few fine and pleasant Sundays this year, about one hundred and fifty people took part in a sponsored walk around Swindon to raise money for the Delta Tennis Centre's 'JuniorDevelopment' programme. Together with the management, a group of people who have become known as the 'Friends of Delta' helped organise the event which raised E2,750. This money will be used to help sponsorthecostof tennis foryoungsters aged from five to ten or twelve who have shown some special flare and aptitude. Some fifty children are already benefiting from the scheme. As an added incentive to raise the amount of personal sponsorship, prizes were offered to those who raised most sponsorship in their age group.
