Dining for charity raises cash There was an alternative to turkey, tinsel and tv in the weeks leading up to Christmas when volunteers from churches all over the town worked at the Christmas Cracker restaurant set up to raise money for third world projects. Under the theme 'dine for mankind' the restaurant served snacks and meals to shoppers in December and ÂŁ4,800 was raised. All the food was donated, along with just about everything else required to run a restaurant. Sun Affiance paid for the premises, Southern Electric lent a cooker, the rates were waived by the council, a familyeven gave up its dishwasher for a few weeks. Surplus food was donated for Christmas care of the homeless at

Grange Park residents take lights fight to ombudsman A group of Grange Park residents are reporting Wiltshire County Council to the Local Government watchdog, the Ombudsman. The residents who live in Gower and Askew Close, and Mulcaster Avenue are protesting about the sitingof a flood lit all-weather playing surface surrounded by a ten foot high fence at Greendown School, within yards of theirhouses. They say they put up with construction during the long dusty summer last year, but when eight lighting columns each measuring 59 feet tall were erected around the playing area, they started to voice their protests with local councillors and their Member of Parliament. Swindon M.P. Simon Coombs, who visited residents on 15 Decemberto view the floodlights, said, 'The County Council deemed itself planning permission inl984,before the houses were built. There was a second application last year, when county councillors were given a

plan which did not show the proximity of the houses which had been built since the original application. "1 have been in touch with the Ombudsman and have advised the residents to take the matter further. Nobody wants to stop the improvement of leisure facilities, but it appears that a decision was taken without really knowing how much nuisance might be caused." MarkFisherofGowerClose said that residents were horrified when the lighting columns were put up in early November. "We have a letter from the County Solicitor stating that the 'floodlights are designed and positioned to illuminate the pitch area only, and every precaution has been taken to prevent spillage of light off the area.' West Swindon is soon to be the scene of a unique computerised crime prevention project, the first of its kind in Europe. The area has been chosen to pilot an experiment called Operation Mirror which will use high-tech methods to identify how crime can be prevented in housing developments of the future, as well as in areas already built. Working with locally based computer mapping company Intergraph at the Delta Business Park, the police are setting up a systemwhich shows the streets and housing layout of West Swindon in detail. The places where criminal incidents take place will be plotted on the map along with information on the action taken to prevent similarcrimes taking place. Project Co-ordinator Inspector Steve Chandler explained that using a computer will allow the police to analyse patterns of crime and to look at the causes more closely. "West Swindon has not been selected because it is a bad area. The level of offences in the area are relatively low. But it is a large, separate area of Swindon, and secondly, the development of

the 'northern sector' of the town will be quite similar. One of our aims is to reflect on what has taken place in the west, and to consider what might take place in the north. "Once we have entered all the information we have on incidents into the computer, we will start to analyse the reasons why they took place," said Insp. Chandler. "Could it be that there is poor street lighting, should shrub beds be cut back or removed to increase safety, how can pedestrian subways be improved? 'The advantage of using a computer is that we can bring together a great deal of information on incidents, compare it and look for similarities - over a period of time. It will help us build a better picture and will allow us to go to the planners with good arguments for improved housing layouts. "We will also be able to press for changes in existing areas if we feel that safety in the community can be improved." Police staff spent a week training at Intergraph in December and the new computer mapping system is expected to be up and running by mid-January.

Mrs Amanda Worrad takes over as ASDA store manager on 7 January. There are over 200 store managers within the ASDA chain and she is one of only two women in the position. Mrs Won-ad is presently store manager at Aintree, Liverpool and lives in Prestatyn, North Wales. She will be renting a house for a few months until two of her three sons have taken their exams. The fire crews at Westlea fire station raised £1,400 for the purchase of a guide dog called Wesley at fund raising event in the autumn. Over £1,000 was raised at a day-long collection at Sainsburys, Bridgemead before Christmas. Trevor Carlton is carrying out a comprehensive study of road safety problems in the area and has asked readers to let him knowwhere they think improvements are required. Children from Dunwich Drive playgroup in Toothill were well prepared for school this January. Six weeks before they were due to leave playgroup the rising fives attended special sessions which introduced them to the more structured activities they can expect to find in school. Using the theme of 'myself,' the children talked about their families and themeselves,drew pictures and made models. All their work was kept ma folder which they have taken to school to show what they have been doing in playgroup. In addition, parent volunteers coordinated by mum Carol Aucott have made theme bags which were taken home and explored.

Shapes, colours, textures are just some of the ideas for play and talk to be found in the bags. Playgroup supervisor Janet Freeguard said it was nice to work with a small group of children sometimes. 'We're able to give more individual attention and can talk about what it's like to go to school. We've had advice from teachers as it's the first time we have run the group. "I think the children feel more confident and secure about moving on in January." The eight children who left the playgroup before Christmas will be attending schools in Toothill, Freshbrook, Shaw and Park North.

Rev. Tony Price reflects on five years work At the beginning of January, I shall be moving with my family to take up the position of Vicar of the parish of Marston in Oxford. This move brings to an end five years as Team Vicar of Freshbrook and Grange Park, serving at the parish church of St Mary's, Lydiard Tregoze. They have been exciting and eventful years not just for the family (when we came, two of our four children were preschool age: now they attend four different schools!) but also for the church and the parish. Therefore you will ensure that you don'tmiss thebest viewpoint, choose the restaurant that cooks the most delicious food or that you catch the once daily bus to a remote part of your holiday island. The information available to you in the library may not be immediately obvious since it is scattered by the nature of the material. So what have we got that can make your holiday a success? Firstly we have a wide selection of pamphlets produced by the RegionalTourist Boards and cover the mostpopularBritishholidayresozts. These are located in blue boxes in the study area of the library. Often we have two copies of some pamphlets so, upon request, you may be able to borrow one and browse through it at your leisure. Staying in this country for the moment we also have our excellent selection of 'Where To Stay' guides. Amongst these we have two good campingand caravaningguides that between them lists our 2,000 sites. Prices are included and once you get to your destination the guide details what you can see and where you can go. If you prefer a self-catering holiday we have a guide that lists cottages, flats and chalets to rent - all Tourist Board approved. But, if you prefer a little less of the 'Do-itYourself' holiday anotherguide lists farmhouses, bed and breakfast accommodation, inns and hotels. All these guides are updated annually so be assured that the information is as current as possible. If you encounter particular problems with takingyourpet on holiday then a unique guide call Pets Welcome' may be helpful. By 'pets' I think they generally refer to cats and dogs, althoughl could see nodefinition in the guide stating what constitutes a pet. Moving further afield we also have a 'French Farm and Village Holiday Guide' which lists 1,200 Cites including those accessible to the disabled. The AA 'Bed and Breakfast in Europe Guide' lists accommodation with prices starting from ÂŁ9 per person per night. Whether you decide to take a trip to Bournemouth or jet set across to California we willbeable to provide you with the specific travel book from our own collection. Because not all travellers demand the same things from their holidays we hold a

range of material from different publishers. Perhaps the most commonly asked for guide are the 'Fodors' which are published annually. Generally they have tended to be a little dry in presentation but the information is very accurate and precise for those discerning travellers who demand detail. The 'Insight' guides are lavishly illustrated and the books comprise of a series of articles written by various contributors. I think if you want togeta real taste for the country you are going to visit then this is good series to provide you with the right blend of flavours. The Michelin Green Guides and AA Baedekers give good factual information and particularly concentrate on the history of a country, the beautiful architecture and art that can be observed. My own personal favourite series of guides are the 'Rough Guides'. I have found through experience that they provide the most honest account of what you really will find when you arrive travel weary at your destination. Does the holiday company's description of the beach really live up to your expectations? This series of guides will tell you before you get there. They do tend to be geared towards the independent traveller - often detailing many undocumented villages and yes, the road really does disappear when the book says so! The editors invite fellow travellers to write in and point out information which has been excluded or which has become out of date. By now you may feel like rushing outofthearmchairand makingyour way to the travel agents, but first pay the library a visit and make your holiday selection by dipping into the many pamphlets, guides and books available foryourperosal.

ARTS SCENE Family shows at the Wyvern There's a whole lot of fun and entertainment for children at Swindon's Wyvem Theatre over the next few weeks. On Thursday 24 January the brilliant young comedy magician and illusionist Wayne Dobson arrives with his unique style of fast-talking, sleight-of-hand magic combined with his witty blend of comedy. Day of action helps good causes Cycling, walking, fishing, horse riding and board games were just a few of the sponsored activities involving all the children at Ridgeway School at Wroughton in September. The result of all the effort was £8,418 to be spent on extra-curricular activities, school improvements and charitable good causes. A donation of £500 was given to the John Griffiths Cyclothon Appeal which is raising money for kidney research. John, who suffers from kidney problems, recently cycled from John O'Groats to Land's End to raise money. He is well known to Ridgeway students living in Toothill as he regularly drives the bus to and from school. The school donated £250 each to the Cancer Research Campaign and Swindon's Prospect Foundation. Ta k I n g 1992 personally 1992 has come to mean closer contact with other countries in the European community. More oftenthan not this refers to economic union. But social and cultural ties are also going to be strengthened. Since late August we have been host to a nine year old girl from a French family. In midFebruary, our daughter Rosemary will return with Katiana to France to with her and her family live for six months. The exchange was arranged by En Famille, an organisation started by a teacher in France who wanted to help young children learn another language by immersing them in another culture for a long period of time. And it works. Katiana was brought to us by her parents with no English. At first we used our rusty, failed '0' level French to explain things, but it is extraordinazyto see how she has acquired English in such a short time In December she had a part in the school production with the rest of her class. Obviously the interaction between her and our two children has been the main force for understanding words and expressions. For example, they have almost constantly played games with each other which has demanded language development. Monopoly has been a great favourite. Recently ad ifficult game called Echelon has taken hold which requires players to read and remember a piece from a novel, then answer questions on it. Her resolve amazed us, but we contacted En Famille who sent us lots of information and in due course we attended an interview with the founder of the organisation, who also meets the French families. We met him again last Easter and then had a telephone call in July to say they had found a family for us. Great excitement! How would we communicate with them as we were told their English was as limited as our French? But we managed when we spoke on the phone and then found help to translate a lettertelling them wha tclothes Katiana might need. Then what would we feed them, would our cuisine be acceptable? It all worked out wonderfully well when they arrived and stayed with us for a night. Next August we'll go to the Anieche to pickup Rosemary and listen to her strangled English. Other parents who have exchanged report their children forget their language and acquire a dreadful accent. Katiana's weekly phone call with her parents now combines both languages and they say her French accent is awful. Now we have made friends with a French family and hopefully the two girls will be able to visit each other in future years. Making an exchange is something we would recommend to other families if they are prepared to be tolerant, open minded and can plan it into theirlives. All important is the question of whether the child concerned wants to take part. If he or she Is interested, the benefits of learning another language and making friends with somebody from another culture cannot be underestimated. By contrast she also helped out at a home for street children. There are an estimated 16,000 urchins roaming the city and the home was a rare haven of security for a few of them. "The Brazilians are very warm and friendly, but it's a very macho society where women have far less independence. I never felt unsafe personally, but we had to think not to wear a watch and keep money in different places. A friend and I were robbed by a man with a gun, but he seemed more nervous than us." During her year Juliette, with other students working in Brazil, had a four day boat trip on the Amazon which shedescribed as amazing and unspoilt. The trees and river were huge, but there was little wildlife. She also visited the tourist attractions in Rio and went to the enormous Iguacu waterfalls. Apart from coping with 1200% inflation during her year on a small allowance, Juliette returned with mixed feelings. "The people are wonderful and kind, but coming back to Britain made me appreciate the choice and quality of food available here and the institutions that care for children, the elderly and people in need."

Greendown student Julia Warner was picked to go on an expedition to Norway with a group of Wiltshire students lastJuly,followinga school trip to the Pencelli outdoor pursuits centre in Wales. Here she describes the two weeks walking 90 miles in the north of the country. 'Norway... Well it is very big and very dangerous. We would be walking along up in the mountains and boulders would wobble, or they would fall away. When we arrived in Norway the scenery was amazing, the mountains looked so unreal as they were different colours in the light. I was amazed by the snow on the ground in mid-summer. The walking was great, we had snowball fights and sang songs to keep us going. I was ill on one of the walks, so I was very moody with everyone but I kept going. We stopped one of the 3 day walks as someone was still ill after two days. Instead we walked up the Kyrkbo mountain which is 1610m above sea level. The view from the top was magnificent. The worst thingwas knowing that after two weeks time I would be back in England. The best thing was being there and doing the walk. The only litter lever saw was one box and a couple of pieces of paper. Reindeer were a common sight. Next year I hope to go on another trip or go to Pencelli for a week with some friends from school. If anyone who reads this is asked to go away to Pencelli go, because it is great fun. There's nothing like seeing cars and mini-buses looking like ants from high up."

Their aim was to give four Swindon College students with special needs a trip of a lifetime. "We were based In a cabin miles from anywhere in the Appalachian mountains. PHH America supplied us with transport and we were able to go horse riding, swimming, fishing and to see the sights. We went to a rodeo, visited a Native American reservation and met lots and lots of Americans. We had a lot of contact with a group of American students with special needs who will be visiting Swindon next year. We'll be making the arrangements for them to stay over here. The people we met were all so friendly, helpful and warm. 'I just love your accent,' was something we were always being told. We were invited into so many people's homes and we were all very sad at having to leave. We all had a great time..

More places for under fives Two new church based playgroups start in January. At Holy Trinity Church, Shaw, the group actually started to meet in September but for less than two hours on two mornings. Social Services registration has just come through which means the playgroup can meet for a longer period. The Noah's Ark playgroup starts at Freshbrook Evangelical Church on 7 January on a restricted hours basis until approved by Social Services. The group will start with twelve children and will meet on three mornings a week. The group has lots of under three's ready on the waiting list but has immediate places for three and four year olds. Parents are asked to visit the church office to collect a registration form. Dial A Ride comes out west From 7 January, Dial A Ride, the local transport service for disabled people, will expand into WestSwmdon so that the whole Thamesdown urban area will now be covered. People living in West Swindon can register as new customers by ringing 616050,12 noon — 4.30p.m. on weekdays. Existing customers will be able to travel into the West Swindon area in the New Year. Times of travel will also be improved. The Bus Service which operates Monday to Friday at present, will be extended to offer a full seven day service, with some limitation on the schedule at weekends. The Dial A Ride Car Service, formerly the WOW( Wheels on Wheels) Taxi, will also run every day and late into the evening if necessary. Dick Hardy, Assistant Co-ordinator of Thamesdown Dial A Ride

DrRHouseman has opened his new general practice surgery in a Portacabin by the Link Centre, between Whitehill Way and Link Avenue. His location in West Swindon is aimed at relieving the pressure of work on the practices already in the area, and helping to assure the primary health care of the area. It is foreseen that, as soon as feasible,permanent facilities will be built on the same site to ensure the continuationof this process. People should beware - this surgery is NOT in the new Health Centre being built near the Link Centre there will be no GP's there.
