We enclosed the tree about a year ago to protect the public and to try to prolong its life, but it was in an exposed position and we knew it was vulnerable to extreme weather. "There is a bit of growth so there is potential for regeneration, but it's not often a successful long term strategy. We might be able to propagate living material; retaining the genetic thread on the same site is something we try to do."

The Lydiard forestry maintenance team were kept busy around the park over Christmas and the early new year pulling down broken branches lodged at a high level so they didn’t suddenly fall on passers by. Each of these costs needs different accountancy and tax treatment. If HMRC decide to treat all these costs as ‘Capital Expenditure’ it could, at worst result in a high tax bill in the first year of the new business. You should talk the idea through with an accountant and examine the proposition in detail. Also, discuss which business structure is best, (e.g. Limited Company etc.), along with bookkeeping records and VAT registration, just as you would with any new business.

Swindon author’s books published in different languages Neil Griffiths, inventor of Story Sacks and former headteacher of Westlea Primary School, has added a new dimension to his globe trotting to promote early years literacy. In addition to travelling regularly to countries around the world and getting involved with school communities from China to the Gambia, many of Neil’s illustrated children’s books have been translated into different languages. He has been working with teachers and parents in China through a Chi-

nese charity, Reading Dreams, which puts libraries into rural schools that otherwise wouldn’t have such access to books. Explaining the rise of his popularity in East Asia Neil said: “I managed to get some representation in South Korea, where they are really hungry for high quality children’s books.” In December he returned to the Gambia, where he has been helping to develop a pre-school children curriculum. “It’s amazing what’s happening over there. The curriculum is

now being used to train teachers at the college and in February I’ll be going back to present it to the ministry of education. We’ve also been working on setting up small businesses to manufacture resources for schools.” Neil’s books are now in translation in Cantonese, Korean and Slovakian. He’s also had enquiries from France, Germany and Chile. Commenting on his international

success Neil said: “It’s great to see the books in different languages and it means that children get to celebrate their own language as well as learning English.” Neil’s new book Scaredy Bear has just been published, a pirate story is planned for May, and a novel for older children about a rescue dog is in the pipeline for September. www.cornertolearn.co.uk

New name for Nova Hreod Almost two years after launching a consultation exercise a North Swindon secondary school has relaunched as Nova Hreod Academy within the United Learning Trust.

Children’s support worker Caroline Smith talked to the youngsters about the work of the refuge and said the Christmas and New Year period was the busiest time of the year, when family tensions build up and domestic violence occurs. “We make up gift packs for when mothers and children arrive at the refuge; some have to leave the family home very quickly and arrive with only the clothes they’re wearing. The children’s dreams of a nice Christmas disappear, and they have to leave their presents behind.

New name for breast cancer support group The Wiltshire Group of Breakthrough Breast Cancer has rebranded itself as the Swindon and North Wiltshire Group to reflect where most of the fundraising and charity support activity takes place. Committee chair Paul Parfrey said: “As with all charitable organisations, fundraising is getting tougher and we really need to engage with companies of all sizes in and around Swindon. This has always been challenging as the group hasn't necessarily been recognised as a Swindon based organisation - even though all the volunteers and group members live in the area. "Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity head office in London has given the group full support and backing for a new name without losing the vision and memories that the group has had since being founded in 1995.

"There have been two icons in the history of the Wiltshire Group, both of whom sadly are no longer with us. “Our founder, Shirley Garman, and Swindon councillor Rex Barnett who was the group patron in 2010. Their memories lives on as Ralph Garman, Shirley’s husband, is still a strong supporter of the group. Some words of wisdom for public speakers If you are unaccustomed to public speaking, check out a club that has been helping people in Swindon find their voice for 30 years. Swindon Speakers’ Club meets on the first and third Thursday of each month at Blunsdon House Hotel, The Ridge, Blunsdon, and members help with a range of speaking skills, including business meetings, speaking engagements, job interviews and presentations. Upcoming meetings will deal with presenting a speech and being ready to improvise (6 February) and the skill of chairing a meeting (20 February). Both sessions are free of charge. But as education director Piers Hobson explained, the club is also good for social reasons.

He said: “As well as providing opportunities to improve your speaking, we have social evenings, debates with other speakers’ clubs, competitions and much more. “It’s about learning in a fun and rewarding environment.” The club, which is part of the 140-strong Association of Speakers’ Clubs, has 20 full members of all ages and backgrounds, from actresses to former airline pilots. Ancient church in the park removed from ‘at risk’ list History lovers have cause to celebrate after St Mary’s Church in Lydiard Park has been removed from the English Heritage Buildings and Structures At Risk Register, following completion of the first phase of renovation work begun in 2011, writes Fran Bevan. With the building now weathertight, Paul Gardner, chair of St Mary’s building and conservation appeal, is looking forward to the second stage of restoration work. The cost of the project is an estimated £1 million, and was started with a £50,000 English Heritage grant. Financial support for the continuing work is being sought through various funding bodies, including a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Paul said: “The next phase is to restore and reorder the pews, some of which date from the 18th Century, and to continue with the conservation and restoration of the wall paintings.” There are also plans to create an historical interpretation area to tell the story of this nationally important parish church. Paul added that visitor numbers increased in 2013 as a result of the The White Queen series on the BBC.

Although the remarkable family tree is referred to as the St John tryptych, it is in fact a polyptych with more panels hidden away under folding screens. Rarely on display is a panel which illustrates the story of Margaret Beaufort, mother of Henry VII, the first Tudor king. Arguably the most powerful woman in the 15th Century, she shares ancestry with the St John family of Lydiard Park, through her mother Margaret Beauchamp. Margaret Beaufort - the‘Red Queen’ played by actress Amanda Hale - was a central character in the BBC drama, and her place in the St John family tree has fuelled people’s imaginations today. Visitors are encouraged to look out for other Tudor references in the church, including the Tudor roses set in the ceiling. Whilst Queen Elizabeth I is central to the Red Queen panel you won’t find any mention of Henry VIII. Apparently, there are some relatives that everyone would rather ignore. Right royal connections at Lydiard Links between the St John family of Lydiard Park and both William, Duke of Cambridge and his wife, the former Kate Middleton, will be coming under the spotlight in the next edition of Swindon Heritage, writes Fran Bevan.

It’s not just through his royal lineage that William can trace his ancestry. He is also descended, through 14 generations, to Thomas Leighton, a swashbuckling Elizabethan knight. Leighton’s military career included an active role in suppressing the 1569 Northern Rebellion, an unsuccessful attempt by Catholic nobles to depose the Queen. As a reward for his services, Elizabeth I appointed Leighton Governor of Guernsey, and around 1587, he married Elizabeth Knollys, one of the Queen’s ladies in waiting. With her red hair and dark eyes Elizabeth bore a strong resemblance to the queen with whom she shared a Boleyn ancestry – and maybe more. Elizabeth Knollys was the granddaughter of that other Boleyn girl, Mary, whose children are believed to have been fathered by Henry VIII. Thomas and Elizabeth had three children, a son Thomas and two daughters, Elizabeth and Anne. Ten years later, back at the St John’s family home in Lydiard, the future of the eight orphaned children of John and his wife Lucy was being decided. The younger daughters were des-

patched to their Uncle Oliver St John, at Battersea, while the two sons, heirs to the considerable St John fortune, became royal wards of court and up for grabs by any interested aristocratic party. Sir Thomas Leighton put in his claim and took over guardianship of the two boys. Eldest brother Walter was drowned while swimming off the coast of the Channel Islands, so Walter’s assets passed to John, as did Sir Thomas’s aspirations for his younger daughter. In 1604 ,13 year old Anne Leighton was married to John St John at St John’s Church, Hackney. Anne’s elder sister Elizabeth married Sherrington Talbot of Salwarp and Lacock in or about 1599, and it is from this branch of the family that the Duchess of Cambridge is said to descend. The launch of an extensive gym and fitness centre in January has seen new members flocking to join this impressive facility which offers over 100 separate stations and the full range of modern fitness equipment. There are also three separate studios for everything from RPM spinning to body pump. Brand new changing rooms and fast track admission through Oasis reception are also major attractions. GLL will be holding a launch weekend to celebrate the completion of the new gym when there will be a range of special offers, including 3 months free with annual memberships and no joining fee. The reception area is being completely transformed to improve access to the centre, offering much more protection from inclement weather. The iconic glass roof over the swimming pool will be replaced this Spring. The second largest dome structure in Europe when it appeared on the town’s skyline 35 years ago, it will be rebuilt to the existing design using

modern materials. Later in the year the swimming pool changing rooms will be completely refurbished to bring them up to modern standards of comfort and hygiene. Ski slope & entertainment plans

2014 will see the submission of the planning application for the indoor ski slope and music venue that Moirai propose for North Star. Along with the refurbished Oasis, the attractions will make Swindon the UK leader in terms of leisure provision on one site. Forward Swindon will be overseeing this project on behalf of Swindon Council. Chairman of Moirai Capital Investments, Martin Barber, said, “These are exciting times. We promised a new future for Oasis Leisure Centre and that is precisely what we are delivering. The new gym raises the standard of fitness provision in Swindon to a new level. Thanks to North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson’s networking with First Great Western railway last Autumn, staff and volunteers at the Olive Tree Cafe at Manor Garden Centre now cook up more inspired meals. The cafe provides positive, workrelated opportunities to people who are recovering from or at risk of suffering mental illness. Justin brought First Great Western into play on two occasions last year, firstly when cafe helper Belinda Platt decided to organise an auction at the Old Bank in Old Town to raise money for a new boiler. One of the top prizes was for two people to travel to London in first class; in total the auction raised over £2,000. Then Justin approached the railway company to sponsor staff training for six people. Swindon Council has launched a second collective switching scheme to create a large group of people from the borough and elsewhere to negotiate better prices – using the power of consumers to get a better deal out of the power companies. More than 750 residents joined the first switching scheme in 2013, and a £72 average reduction in annual fuel bills over a full year is expected. Some people report their saving could be as much as £200. The 2014 scheme is run in partnership with iChoosr, and you have to sign up by 17 February. Cllr Dale Heenan, cabinet member for Strategic Planning and Sustainability, said: “This is practical action that all 90,000 households in Swindon can take today to cut their gas and electricity bills. Volunteers from the Swindon and Cricklade Railway Society have been working hard to prepare a temporary Taw Valley Halt station, on the edge of Mouldon Hill park.

They started laying track to the south of their base at Blunsdon Station in the Autumn of 2008, using the route of the former Midland & South Western Junction Railway which closed 52 years ago. Track laying was completed and brought into use in August 2012 but passengers could only embark at Blunsdon Station to travel south to the edge of the park. After delays and several missed deadlines, the society, which celebrated its thirty fifth year in November, hopes to welcome passengers onto trains at Mouldon Hill by mid-summer. Over the last year volunteers have been constructing a temporary platform where passengers will board carriages for the three and half mile return trip to the northern point of laid track, about a mile outside Cricklade. An adjacent platform will allow a buffet car to travel to Mouldon Hill Park on a daily basis, so that visitors can buys tickets and enjoy refreshments. Permission to construct a footpath from the car park is awaited before the southern terminus can be opened. The temporary station will be in use until the railway society receives permission to build the line over a culvert and trackbed that was built by North Swindon developers 15 years ago. Work on a ‘gateway’ under Mead Way from Westlea was completed in December. This latest phase of works funded by the Swindon Travel Choices project has created an attractive and more user-friendly layout. Bespoke plinth signs, branded with the Western Flyer logo, provide a route map and information about the sights to be seen on the way into town. Wiltshire will be the first in the UK to operate it as an air ambulance. The aircraft will be fitted out with the most recent Aerolite equipment to meet the highest helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) specification. Starting in late autumn, the contract covers the provision, maintenance and flying of the aircraft for up to 19 hours a day, every day of the year. It also includes a replacement helicopter in five years’ time.

January and February is the time when couples most often decide to separate and seek help, yet the financial effect on the parties in dispute about family issues can cost many thousands of pounds each. However, when couples choose to mediate, it can cost as little as £500 and importantly legal aid for a mediated separation is still available, which means that it might even be free if the certain requirements are met. Jeni Burchell CEO of mediationplus in Swindon said: “At mediationplus we are critically aware that many separating couples do not realise that legal aid is still available for anyone who uses mediation as long as they meet the eligibility criteria.
