They were chosen from the Isambard Documentors, 12 pupils who have been recording life inside the school and around the community since it opened. The youngsters joined the media pack who covered the visit and The Link was asked to help them get good angles and avoid being trampled by photographers and TV crews hunting for the best shots. "It was fun to be able to take close up pictures of Gordon Brown, as well as talk to him," said Becky. "I was a bit surprised by how everybody elbows each other out of the way, but the photographers were

helpful as well." Jordan had the more difficult job of carrying and positioning a video camera on a tripod. "It was quite lively because we had to quickly move from one place to another but you had to stand your ground and not be pushed out of the way. "Gordon Brown was confident and friendly; he was very impressed by Isambard." Becky asked the Prime Minister why, in difficult timem, does he enjoy the job. "He said it gives him something to get up for and also how important it is to help the country."

After months of researching options to reduce energy consumption, councillors decided on photovoltaic panels. The system only requires daylight rather than direct sunlight and can generate energy on a cloudy day. Councillors will be able to monitor how much electricity is generated from a meter inside the building and details will be posted on the parish council's website later in the year. During the spring and summer, when the most electricity will be produced, any surplus will be sold to Southern Electric. The equipment is expected to cover costs and generate income over its 25 year life as well as reducing the council's environmental impact. The cost was supported by a grant from the Low Carbon

Buildings scheme. Coun Carroll hopes the installation will encourage other people to think about what they could do to reduce energy use. Parish councillors are now considering how they can share their new found knowledge of solar energy systems and may run an open evening.

Pressure builds to expand West Swindon as Mead Moredon Bridge planning appeal could open up West development A planning enquiry which recommences in the week beginning 16 February in Chippenham will determine whether 200 houses are added to West Swindon, and it could open the floodgates for a further 1,000 in North Wilts, but on Swindon's doorstep. Because of a quirk in the way district boundaries were redrawn in the 1980s, the land between Sparcells and the River Ray, adjacent to the Moredon Road railway bridge lies within North Wiltshire District, although surrounded on three sides by Swindon. North Wilts rejected an application by Wain Homes for the second time to build 200 houses on the site on the grounds that it is outside the agreed framework plan for housing development, the impact on the road network and the increased flood risk upstream on the River Ray. Despite the credit crunch developers are lining up planning applications in readiness for an economic upturn and are lodging appeals to every rejection. A planning inspector in 2004 required North Wilts to find land for 1,000 homes as urban extensions to Swindon, but this was raised to 3,000 by a Regional Planning Inspector. Last year a consortium of builders argued at a regional planning

enquiry that they could quickly satisfy government house building targets for the Swindon area if given permission to develop land to the north of West Swindon, beyond Peatmoor at Ridgeway Farm (1,000 houses). Ironically the land was originally part of the Swindon western expansion master plan in the early 1980s but was excluded by a planning inspector when plans for Shaw, Peatmoor and Sparcells were given the go ahead. Sparcells resident Pete Wilson has objected to the Moredon Bridge proposal. "The congestion on Mead Way is huge and is going to get

worse as 2,000 homes are still to be completed in Priory Vale. The Moredon Bridge site is not a good position to build houses; it will be bad foreverybody inWestSwindon if developers get their hands on Ridgeway Farm." Richard Pagett of environmental action group Purton Ps & Qs said the pressure from developers is severe. "Prior to the first three days of the enquiry in mid December, Taylor Wimpey lodged their objections to Moredon Bridge because, one suspects, of their interest in Ridgeway Farm where 1,000 houses could be built. "Swindon Borough Council may also be taking this longer term view as they too objected to the Moredon Bridge application. "The Regional Spatial Strategy demands more houses but the economic recession and common sense now question whether building more and more houses is sustainable. Developers should, in any event, wait for the proper planning process to take place. The Regional Spatial Strategy has

yet to be approved and Swindon Council still has not finalised its Core Strategy. "We question whether there is enough water supply available in the Upper Thames region and whether there will be major problems with waste removal, flooding, traffic congestion, school places and adequate health support for another 3,000 houses added to West Swindon." Coun Peter Greenhalgh, Swindon Council cabinet member for strategic planning, said, "the council does not have as much influence as we want to ensure planned expansion. Decisions on housing provision are being made at central government level, and the detail of these urban extensions will be decided upon by North Wilts District Council. Coate enquiry gets going in February Developers Persimmon Homes and Redrow Homes have forced a planning enquiry on their proposal to build 2,000 homes and a university campus between Coate Water Country Park and Great Western Hospital. Over the last five years well over 50,000 people have signed a petition against the plan and Swindon Council, having supported a university at Coate, is now keen to see it built in the town centre. Speedway plan goes to the dogs A ÂŁ6 million proposal to build 450 homes, offices and a new speedway and dog stadium at St Andrew's Ridge has been suspended pending an upturn in the economy and an improvement in the housing market. In the 1990s the North Swindon Development Company agreed to contribute £15 million to the proposed construction of an extension of Thamesdown Drive from Pembroke Park to Barnfield Road. But this figure was never going to be enough and coun Peter Greenhaigh, Swindon Council cabinet member for strategic planning and transport, said he's been told it could cost upwards of £100 million to build. "The road is in our strategic plan, but the borough council could not undertake such a huge project without significant government investment." Gwillam Lloyd, head of highway network management at Swindon Council, confirmed that the project poses considerable engineering challenges. "The road would have to cross the River Ray twice and also the Swindon Gloucester railway line which is raised on an embankment, as well skirt the former landfill site at Shaw Forest. "We are conducting engineering and environmental surveys before any submission to government for financial support is considered. The cost could be in the region of £100 to £140 million." Mr Lloyd said Mead Way could be widened but this is not a preferred option.

ME, also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), affects around 250,000 people in the UK men, women and children of all ages and social/ethnic backgrounds. In 2002 the government finally gave formal recognition of the illness but the exact cause of ME is unknown, though it has been known for viral infections to trigger it. People's Network celebrates 5 years in Swindon libraries Since it was set up in late 2003, the People's Network has made the World Wide Web accessible to all: over 800 people have got to grips with the basics on PN courses in Swindon libraries, whilst thousands have used the computers every week to browse and e-mail. Bradon and Belarus get closer through children Twelve youngsters from Belarus spent a day at secondary school in early January when they visited Bradon Forest in Purton. The school has adopted the Swindon branch of Chernobyl Children's Life Line (CCLL) as one of its charities and is incorporating study of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster twenty two years into the curriculum. The activity came about after pupil Sam Palmer from Middleleaze nominated CCLL for support because of his friendship with the McCready family who host children from Belarus. Inspectors described the school as satisfactory but made it clear that this rating did not do justice to the purpose and energy generated by headteacher Clare Griffin-Felton. During the inspection, staff and parents were quizzed to see if there was any lasting resentment over the merger of Windmill and Freshbrook schools. But they were impressed by the desire to put discord behind them and do the best for the children: 'A majority of parents are very supportive of the school and recognise the school is moving forward with vigour' reads the report. Mrs Snelgrove said that Millbrook had become a very successful school after a difficult period when the amalgamation was being ar-

gued. "That is receding into history and we have a gem of a school at the heart of the community. "Millbrook has established its own identity, clearly shown through the striking purple uniform. It's a wonderful experience to see the community that's been created and lovely to see all the children singing together." The school, currently operating between two sites, will finally be united when building work on a brand new school is completed this year. "The new building is rapidly taking shape and should be open in September," said Mrs GriffinFelton. "We are looking forward to the end of the daily movement back and forth and indeed, another new beginning."

This was the first time that Greendown students had entered the Make Your Mark Challenge which kick started a week of enterprise events across the country. Teams of Gifted and Talented Year 9 and 10 youngsters were joined by Year 10 Business Studies students to hear their brief which was secret until the day of the event. Teams had five hours to come up with a unique and inspiring product or service which would make money and was inspired by the Olympic and Paralympic values. They had to support their plans with detailed documentation and financial evidence. The students immersed themselves in their task as entrepreneurs, needing only occasional support from their teachers. Presentations were made to a panel of judges made up of teachers and members of the business community. The clear winners were the Support our Sports Stars team who came up with the idea of a badge symbolising a partnership between the 2012 Olympics and stars of the future. They proposed selling the

badge to raise money for improved sports facilities and to contribute to the 2012 Olympics. Year 10 pupil Katie Tonks of Support our Sports Stars said her group won because of teamwork. "Even though we were brought together from different classes, our team gelled very quickly. We understood the problem and could work out what we had to do by explaining things to each other and taking on different tasks. The challenge gave us a good idea of what going into business involves. It's something I might consider in future." One of the judges, Robert Barrett, formerly Worldwide Line Manager with Intel was impressed by the pupils' approach. "The atmosphere was cooperative and mutually supportive in all the groups; it takes maturity and effort for teams in a business situation to work that way. Each group came up with good ideas but Support our Sports Stars presented a viable proposition that had a strong graphic element and could have feasibily been developed and turned into a profitable venture."

John Fleetwood, 86, now living in the Vendée region of France with his daughter, wrote to thank The Link for publishing his picture making the Lady Diana Spencer nameplate in the September 2008 Link and comments on the engine swap at Steam Museum that month. I had the honour of making the nameplates for Evening Star, which was swapped for the King George V engine, and I was very proud to have done. It was a really good locomotive and did what it was asked to do but I, like so many who worked inside the works, felt it is not really a GWR loco as it was not designed in Swindon like the King George V. I recall one of the loco foremen saying, 'it was not a Swindon locomotive with all those bits hanging on the outside.' I imagine quite a few of the old railway men are not impressed by the change, as they always talk of a special loco as if it is one of their children. I spent many hours listening to their tales about what they had done and seen as they drove their engines on the mainline. I started inside the works in

Former rail workers and their relatives have been making tracks to record their memories with community radio station, Swindon 105.5FM. An appeal in October's Link for people to tell their stories provoked a huge response and volunteer Emily Roberts from Abbey Meads has been capturing memories for a series of radio programmes called Wagons & Waterways. "We had so many people make contact with their stories which are all absolutely fascinating and are great material for a really wonderful set of programmes," she said. "Most people think they haven't got a lot to say but once we get started they can talk for 25 minutes about the railways. It's so interesting listening to the stories and histories." Emily, whose dad has worked for Network Rail for 35 years, was delighted when she was asked to be involved with the project. "The railway has always been part of my life but I didn't know as much as I do now; it's been really phenomenal. I didn't realise until I started to talk to people, how much the railway had meant to Swindon." People can go into the radio station to record their oral history or Emily can interview them at home if that is more convenient. In addition to collecting tales of life inside GWR, she would like to hear from people who have memories to share about the Wilts & Berks canal. Swindon Therapy Centre for Multiple Sclerosis Moving Soon Appeal The organisation hopes to move out of their cramped premises to a much larger refurbished building in West Swindon in September. It receives no funding from the NHS and relies entirely on fundraising and donations. In the new centre they will be able to provide support and practical assistance to many more MS sufferers. The Rainbow Club This Swindon group for bereaved children runs on a shoe string and relies on charitable donations to keep going. The children meet with professionals about six times a year during the school holidays to talk about their experiences and share the common knowledge that most others don't have.

Jog in the park will set hearts racing A sponsored jog around lydiard Park on 24 February is likely to be a thoroughly muddy affair, but organisers say this only adds to the fun. Co-ordinator of the Hearts First Jog, Andy Coles, said that as people crossed the line at last year's event, the muddier people were, the bigger their smiles. He is even hoping for a spot of rain a couple of days before the race to create just the right conditions. The sponsored event, now in its second year, takes runners on a 3km route round the park, across all terrains. Participants can choose whether to complete one, two or three laps which makes the event suitable for fun runners and more experienced cross country athletes. The event is open to all ages but under 16s must be accompanied by an adult. Last year £12,000 was raised and the target this year is 600 First. North Swindon schools not just for kids Community groups and sports clubs looking for a suitable venue are spoilt for choice in North Swindon, where seven PFI schools are open for public hire. Facilities at the North Swindon Learning Campus plus Moredon and Orchid Vale Primaries and Nova Hreod Secondary are managed by John Laing. Amy Hutchinson, who manages hire to third parties, said that sports teams playing football, hockey, badminton, wheelchair football and netball regularly use the facilities but there is plenty of capacity for more. "We want to encourage tennis, basketball, rugby, step aerobics, outdoor cricket, gymnastics and trampoline, and would love to have these sorts of groups contact us." There are specialist facilities for people with disabilities at Brimble Hill and Uplands special schools, including sensory rooms, soft play and a hydrotherap\ pool and these will shortly be opening for public hire. A community room at Isambard is offered free of charge to non profit organisations. The room

has already been made available to Brownies, Guides, Scouts, Redhouse Christian Fellowship and disabled musicians, Music Alive. Meetings, training sessions and forums can all be accommodated in the schools in a selection of conference and meeting facilities ranging from small rooms to a hall holding up to 300 people. The schools are the ideal venue for children's functions and parties, with the benefit of ball pits, play equipment and outside play areas. Catering can be arranged for all events. Redevelopment work on Phase 1 and 2 of the park which started in 1994 to turn the former landfill site into a large open space next to West Swindon will be completed at the end of March, when responsibility for the area is taken over by Swindon Council's parks maintenance department. Because there has been so much earth shifted and shaped and thousands of trees planted on what was once Swindon's domestic and industrial tip, there is only surface level knowledge of the environment at Shaw Forest. Deer sightings are common but Stuart wants to get a clearer and more scientific idea of the range of mammals, birds and insects that have colonised the park. "Shaw Forest has a wide range of habitats which encourage a variety of species to set uphome," said Stuart. "There have been a few studies done previously that have identified species that were present at the time but there have been changes during different phases of work and I would like to involve volunteers in regular visits that would gather more complete records. To gain a bronze award, the students aged between 16 and 19, need to show that they have covered four areas of achievement: learning a new skill, taking part in physical recreation, serving the community and taking part in an expedition. The young people decided that their new skill would be gardening and their work began in the Spring with visits to garden centres to buy seeds. Using the school's vegetable plot and greenhouse, they have raised crops including garlic, beetroot, potatoes, tomatoes and sunflowers. "The young people did all the work themselves," said youth worker, Carole Anne Rapson. "Some of them enjoyed it so much that a couple have bought patio greenhouses and they're still growing vegetables and flowers at home." During the Autumn term the group completed the physical requirement of the award and have developed skills in a variety of sports, including football, tennis and basketball, and kick-boxing.

The youngsters will be presented with certificates for completing the first two parts of the award on 30 January. The Duke of Edinburgh scheme at Uplands is coordinated by Swindon Youth Service, providing a valuable after school activity for people with learning difficulties. Carole Anne hopes that students who leave Uplands before completing the challenge will continue to come to the club to carry on and strive for higher levels of the award.

Boys and girls of 13 and over, with parents and carers, are welcome to meet cadets and staff and learn about ATC activities through videos, displays and one-to-one discussions. In the past year cadets have taken part in glider training at Hullavington near Chippenham and have flown the RAF's basic trainer at RAF Boscombe Down, as well as helping to organise the air show at Kemble in June. They attended a summer camp at RAF Valley and cadets have taken part in a variety of sports for the squadron, wing or region. Trips to Dartmoor to learn map reading skills and the Lake District for adventure training including kayaking, canoeing, mountain waking and climbing have also been part of the exciting programme.

The flight were placed fifth in a Wing Training Day Event, against 25 other squadrons, with cadets achieving first place in the photography competition and Sgts Mendham and Willis' flight website received particular mention. Unit commander PIt Officer Helene Wooctham, said, "whether you are interested in joining the Royal Air Force or needing to gain confidence in doing something new, meeting new friends, the open evening is a great chance to find out if the ATC is for you." More adult volunteers are needed to become leaders and are invited to attend.
