Residents miss the bus The change in Stagecoach route 8 from Town Centre to Freshbrook Village Centre on 27 January has upset people who can no longer catch a bus close to their home. The new schedule shows that Beaumaris Road, Toothill is missed out after 855am. The No 8 now runs past the West Swindon Centre, along Whitehill Way and into Freshbrook via Gainsborough Way. The nearest stop is now half a mile away. Glynis Daniels from Stamford Close said a petition was being raised by angry residents calling for a reinstatement of the service. "There are many pensioners in the area who cannot walk to the nearest stop. People are not being well served by Stagecoach."

New shopping village opens in six weeks

Railway heritage regenerates into shopping tourism centre Europe's largest enclosed designer shopping outlet village opens in Swindon on 14 March with some of the top names in retailing coming together at the Great Western Designer Outlet Village located in the refurbished GWR works at Churchward Park. Building workers are busily putting the finishing touches to the £40 million regeneration project which creates strong links to the past by preserving many architectural features in the old GWR boiler shop, the smithy and the tank shop. Names like Nike, Jigsaw, Lacroix, Levi, Osh Kosh, Timberland and many others will be seen over shop fronts for the first time in the town. Up to eighty of the 100 units should be ready to trade by opening day and around 1,000 jobs will be created when all the units are occupied. Developers BAA/McArthur Glen estimate that 4 million shoppers will visit in the first year. At a press briefing on 22 February, Byrne Murphy, Chief Operating Officer for the developers, said the retail outlet concept brings together top names in retailing so that excess stock can be sold at attractive prices whilst protecting and reinforcing brand image. Savings willbe between 15% and 50% off high street prices. He said the company was committed to protecting town centre shops. Experience elsewhere shows that Swindon will benefit from greater numbers of tourists who visit the town to shop.
However, despite the vast numbers predicted to visit the village, the developers reckon shopping patterns should minimise congestion on approach roads. Fred Taggart, director of Regeneration Through Heritage, endorsed the project believing it to be an imaginative and attractive adaptation of a very complex building, which satisfies the demands of retailers whilst retaining
the historical character of an important site. He said the outlet village would be used as a national example of how new uses can be found for old buildings. The outlet village will also have a steam railway engine parked outside a food court, designed like a railway station, served by six restaurants, including a branch of West Swindon's Chinese Experience.

Railway memories wanted Swindon museum staff are busily working on information to be displayed in the new railway heritage centre next to the designer outlet village, subject to a grant from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. A decision on the £12 million project to be located in the old GWR sheds at the Churchward development is expected by 23 February at the latest. Swindon Council have applied to the lottery for £8m, with the rest coming from council funds, BAA / McArthur Glen, and site owners Tarmac. GWR Museum curator Tim Bryant said that a lot of preparation work had to be done before a lottery decision is made, in order to achieve a Spring 1999 opening. 'The new museum will cover 200,000 square feet, compared to the 70,000 square feet we have at present. It means a great deal of research and writing is taking place to make it a dynamic and interesting attraction. "We are creating an oral history of the railway for sound and video presentations. Chris Court from Stamford Close is fund raising so that her 12 year old niece Jenny Andrews can take a trip to Sea World,Florida. Jenny, from Brixham in Devon, was diagnosed in September as having a rare form of bone cancer. Treatment has had a limited effect and she is now undergoing another intensive bout of chemotherapy in Bristol. "She's such a brave little girl," said Chris. "Jenny knows what is going on, and is fighting to get better. She has said she would like to stroke the dolphins at Sea World and her friends and family want to fulfill her wish.' Church says farewell to Minister Toothill Church parishoner Ann Hall writes.
As many of you will know George Gibson, our Minister at Toothill church and his wife Tricia will be leaving in February. Their last Sunday with us will be 16 February. We are very sorry they are going. George has great gifts for preaching and leading worship. He has introduced us to many new worship songs with beautiful words and music. In the three and a half years they have been here Toothill Church has grown in maturity. There has been an increase in the number of people attending the church and we have grown in unity and love for one another, and in commitment to Jesus Christ. George has taught us much about the work of God's Holy Spirit and we have seen His power at work in our church. We now have four strong Bible Study groups and work with the teenagers and children has grown. A youth club has been started, also First Steps, a group for pre-school children and their mums or carers. George has always worked with a team of leaders and delegated responsibility to church members. He has encouraged us to discover and develop our own gifts. We are sorry that the repairs to our church have not been completed before George and Tricia leave, but expect the work to start again soon. We look forward to

moving back in and we are now thinking about ways in which we can serve the community. George has also worked as the Free Church Minister for the parish of West Swindon and the Lydiards and has led worship and preached at our four other churches. Wherever possible Tricia has shared George's ministry. She has worked with the children and young people and helped to lead the Saints Alive course (a course on the basics of the Christian faith). George and Tricia are going to Kent to lead a group of United Reformed Churches in the Medway towns. We thank God for the privilege of having them to lead us. They go to their new work with our love and prayers and good wishes.

Lottery help for lunch club Freshbrook Lunch Club, which provides a midday meal on Fridays to retired and housebound people wherever they live in West Swindon has received a grant from the National Lottery to help with transport. The £2,010 grant will subsidise people every Friday. Two Freshbrook School teachers were recently awarded degrees for advanced studies in education Zina Ioannou, who celebrates her fifth year at Freshbrook in February, has been awarded a Masters Degree in Education Management from the Open University which she will receive at a graduation ceremony in July, just four days before her second child is expected. Special Needs teacher Linda Clements, who has been at Freshbrook for 11 years, has also been successful, taking a Masters in Education from Oxford Brookes University. Linda said the studies had been very interesting, but hard work on top of their school duties. "It was fascinating to make the link between policy decisions affecting education and the work of teachers in the classroom. The last couple of years has required a lot of discipline, especially when preparing the final dissertation." Freshbrook headteacher Phillip Gurney said he and the governors were delighted with Zina and Linda's achievement. "They are the fourth and fifth members of staff to be sponsored by the school to advanced degrees. Their experience and understanding will improve their teaching practice; this will benefit our children."
A new quilting group has started its second term at Greendown School on Wednesday evenings between 7pm and 9pm. New school joy turns to gloom

Delight has turned to doubt because Swindon Borough Council might not be able to afford a new £1.5m primary school for the Roughmoor area. With help from local MP Simon Coombs, the council was successful in December in its bid to a Government challenge fund to cover the cost of borrowing £540,000. But the repayments for the remaining Lim has to come from hard pressed council funds. The project goes before the council's policy and resources committee on 25 February which will decide on which capital building projects the council will go ahead with, and whether the Roughmoor school will be one of them. Parent Lesley Stannard, chair of the the Brook Field Parents Action Committee, said she was very disappointed by the delay. "We thought there would be an immediate start on the design and building of the school so that it could be ready for September 1998. This uncertainty over funding is very worrying." Brook Field School has been expanding to take thegrowing number of children from Peatmoor and Sparcells, and parents, governors and teachers were very concerned that permanent facilities were being overcrowded, and too many children would have to be taught in mobiles. The challenge fund success was a boost to Brook Field headteacher Roger Nicholas who said it was a great Christmas present when The Link passed the news on to him in December. Mike Lusty, Swindon's Chief Education Officer, said the council wants to support the Roughmoor School, but there is alimitedbudget to be spread over a large number of capital projects.

Headteacher Neil Griffiths said children need a variety of reading. "Pupils use reference books and learn how to gain information in a formal way. But they need to understand the written word when presented in a variety of ways." The school recently set up anon-
standard reading box containing a range of items including diaries, calendars, comics, prayer books and magazines. Children of all ages use the box in conjunction with activity worksheets which help test their understanding of the material they are reading.
Mr Griffiths said the contents of the reading box forms part of a structured reading programme to develop literacy skills. "It's good to have The Link in the box because the children can relate the content to their surroundings; it's nicely compact to handle and store."

Conservationists fight to save fields The struggle by the Seven Fields Conservation Group against Thamesdown Council and Abbey Meads developers to preserve the open space between Haydon Wick, Penhill and Abbey Meads moves to the council's planning committee meeting on 5 February. The council seems set on building a lit, tarmac, urban cycle route through what the County Archaelogist describes as a 'well preserved and prominant example of medieval landscape and important historical interest.' One field has been destroyed; the group is trying to prevent more devastation to a natural environment they have worked hard to maintain, since the council helped to set up them up 8 years ago.
Speaking bluntly, Seven Fields spokeswoman Marilyn Beale described council planners as having a 'fetish for tarmac paths and pretty landscaping,' whilst councillors are 'being scared witless of contradicting officers.' "They just do not want to listen to the people who live here. We cannot see why they cannot leave the area to develop naturally. Their proposal is unneccessary and there are alternatives."

Bowlers bid for club house Haydon Wick Bowling Club enjoyed a steadily improving outdoor bowls season in 1996 with teams now winning enough matches to stay away from the bottom spot in league tables. Teams from the club are currently staying sharp by playing in the 1996/1997 indoor bowls leagues at the Oasis and Westlecot. The club now has planning consent for a club house and fund raising is going ahead to raise the one third cost necessary to apply to the Lottery for possible full funding for the rest. The club is heartened by the support received from Haydon Wick and Abbey Meads parishioners and are keen to encourage people from the area who wish to take up the sport. New hope for long delayed doctors surgery It looks as if Abbey Meads residents will soon be able to visit a doctor without having to travel into the town centre. The Penhill and Central practice of Dr John and partners has been in negotiation with the Haydon Development Company, the Wiltshire Health Authority and Thamesdown Council for over a year to resolve problems about releasing land at the village centre to build a surgery. Some progress
is being made at last. The practice had been led to believe in December 1995 that a permanent surgery could be ready to open in mid-1997. However the site is only now about to be released so that planning permission can be applied for. Practice manager Brian Reed said the transfer of the site from the developers, to Thamesdown, to the Health Authority and fi-
nally to the practice should take place by mid-February. "If there are no further delays we hope to open the surgery in the early summer of 1998," he said. "We are still trying to establish where to put a temporary building so that we can provide a local service soon. The site for the temporary building overlaps where we will build the permanent surgery; we cannot move until we have sorted the
problem." The practice will be changing its name to the Abbey Meads Medical Practice when it is established in the temporary building. Until then, new residents are invited to register at the Carfax Street Health Centre in the town centre, tel: 692022.

Girls club marks up successful first year An all girls football team celebrated its first anniversary in January with a birthday cake and an easy going training session. Founded by Sue Povey and coached by husband Ian, Shaw Girls FC have had a very successful year. Nicknamed the 'Yellow Perils,' after their bright yellow shirts sponsored by WH Smith, the club has won or taken runner up position in all of the ten 6-aside tournaments entered across the county. At the Torbay International Tournament in July last year,
the under 14s team took third place. Of particular note, team member twins Leanne and Adele Taylor were selected to join the Wiltshire Ladies Squad. The club is planning its second Easter six-a-side tournament and would like to hear from clubs who want to enter, and from sponsors for backing. Volunteers help crime casualties In 1996 Victim Support Wiltshire offered help to 3,070 people who were victims of crime in the Swindon area.
Volunteers with the scheme are trained to listen to the needs of the victims they are visiting and to help them overcome the problems they may be facing in the aftermath of the crime. We offer help and information in order to assist people to come to terms with what has happened to them, to help to reduce the affects of the crime. Victim Support offers help to
the victims of all crime, ranging from theft and burglary, to rape and murder. It is now looking for volunteers in the Swindon area to join the next training course which will be held in March. Interviews with potential participants will take place soon. If you feel that you may be able to help please call 01380 729476 to order you information pack.
We were kept active over the Christmas period with a variety of calls, but one incident in particular sticks in my mind. It occurred in Rollestone Street in the centre of Swindon early one morning. Colleagues from Green Watch at Swindon Fire Station led by Sub Officer Graham Weller (who lives in Shaw) attended a house converted into bedsits. They were confronted with a fierce fire with one person trapped and calling urgently from a window. The crew worked well in difficult circumstances to rescue the man by ladder and to bring the fire under control. Another resident actually made her escape by running through the fire, sustaining minor burns. Happily there were no serious injuries, but had it not been for the actions of Graham and his crew there may well have been a different outcome. We are pleased to welcome a new face to Westlea Fire Station. Fire fighter Glyn Moody has joined us, transferring from Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service. Glyn and his wife, Julie already live in Shaw. You will have read in the De-
cember Link of our attempt to beat the Swindon Locomotion wheelchair basketball team at their own game. Bad mistake, we got stuffed! That said, it was great fun and helped to raise some money for a very good cause. The sight of our very own Andy Collins doing his best to pilot a wheelchair with completely different intentions to his own is not easily forgotten. To close, I'd like to remind you of some fire safety advice. Firstly, in the incident above, the residents were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector activating. I can't think of a better reason to make sure you own one. Secondly, what would you do if you woke to find yourself trapped by fire with perhaps your normal escape route cut off? You may well find yourself in dark and difficult conditions and definitely not in the frame of mind to make the right decisions. Plan now, before it happens, so that everybody knows what to do and what escape routes to use. Just a few moments thought to consider the options and make your plans might mean all the difference.

Woodland outings The Wiltshire Wildlife Trust manages half a dozen woods within easy reach of Swindon and many more throughout Wiltshire. Most of these reserves are open to the public to enjoy. Nature trail leaflets or reserve guides are available which provide background information and identify the important features. Clouts Wood is an area of ancient woodland on the edge of Wroughton managed by the traditional method of coppicing where the wood is cut periodically and the trees allowed to regrow from the cut stumps. This opens up glades to encourage butterflies, wildflowers and mammals like dormice. The trust is organising a handson coppicing day at Clouts Wood on Sunday 23 February, starting at 1030am. All tasks are led by experienced volunteers with tools pro-

Drugs: be aware at a youth only residential Five members of Upper Shaw Youth Club are setting up a drugs education residential weekend to pass on information to other young people in the area. But its going to take place in March or April, not February as first advertised.

The teenagers will be helped by Swindon Druglink and trainers from the Cascade peer education project to plan and run the event. "It's no good saying,'don't take drugs because people will just ignore you," said group member Andrew Davies. "If people are going to try drugs, it's better to
know more about what you could be getting into and the precautions you should take. The weekend gives young people a chance to get detailed information, not like at school where they just skim over the top." Sally Price said it's important to know what to do if a friend has taken drugs. "How many people know what to do if someone collapses under the influence? Panic is not an option. You've got to know how to handle the situation, how to explain to parents, or when to call the emergency services." There are 20 places at the weekend which will include drugs education sessions using talk, role play, trust games and informal chat. There's a pool room, football, karaoke and video. "It's a chance for young people to getaway to work things out," says Simon Pitts-Drake. "The weekend we went to in November was really great. You get the facts from people your own age and the atmosphere is tight to learn more." The three teenagers did not think the 'Know the score' drugs awareness advertisements on radio were effective. Guide has to raise cash for Mexico trip Michelle Clark from Grange Park has been selected to represent Wiltshire at a three week international guide gathering in Mexico. The year 11 Greendown student has to raise £1,400 to make the trip in July after she takes her GCSEs. Business sponsors and individuals able to help should contact Michelle on 874054. Both were until recently members of 1st Shaw Guides where they received the Badon Powell Trefoil, the highest award that can be achieved in guiding. A Parliamentary candidate is trying to help drivers entering West Swindon via Mannington roundabout. Julia Drown, the Labour Party's candidate for South Swindon, has received many calls about the dangers when exiting the roundabout into Tewkesbury Way. She has written to Wiltshire County Council about the problems created by two lines of traffic merging into a single lane. Nursery education vouchers: choice, confusion and competition for four year olds Parents with children nearing their fourth birthday will soon receive vouchers entitling them to nursery education for 36 weeks from April. But after many years of harmony between primary schools and pre-school playgroups, the voucher scheme being introduced by the Government has now set up competition for four year olds. There is now a market in four year olds as vouchers represent cash to the bodies who provide education before a child reaches the statutory school age of five. Parents may not realise that a high proportion of the voucher money is coming from the national primary school budget. Schools are now under pressure to reclaim it to balance their budgets by taking in more 4 year olds.
Some parents may be under the impression that they have to get their child into school as early as possible for fear of losing a place. Clare De Meyer, Chair of Thamesdown & District PreSchool Learning Alliance, is very concerned that parents are being confused and even misled. "Parents should not be concerned that they are damaging their local school if they do not take the vouch-
ers in as soon as their child turns four. Their responsibility is to do the best by their child. Some children may be ready for school at 4, but many are not. Parents should not feel pressured to put their child into school before he or she is ready. "Parents are entitled to spend the vouchers as they want. Vouchers can be split between school and pre-school if parents wish. If a school tells you that they cannot
Learning to play or playing to learn? The importance of playgroup by Clare De Meyer, Chair of the Thamesdown & District Pre-School Learning Alliance All children learn and develop at different rates, but the one thing they all have in common is the way in which they learn - by playing. Play is children's work, and essential for children under five. It helps young children to talk about things that happen to them, express their feelings and thoughts, and find out what happens if... Children need to be able to experiment and come to conclusions. When we adults watch children playing we very often think they are just having a bit of fun. But they are doing much more than that - they are learning about the world around them, and about themselves. Pre-school children are very active and need to jump, run, skip, climb and throw. By doing this children learn to control and co-ordinate their movements, build up stamina and develop an awareness of their own bodies. Steering wheeled toys means they learn to judge speed and direction. When children dress-up and pretend, they learn how to deal with clothing and fastenings, put things
away after use, try out how another person might feel, and learn how to talk about experiences that are important to them. Playing in the home corner children recognise one to one correspondence as they match clothes to dolls, cups to saucers. They also deal with mathematical sets as they sort the red cups from the blue, and the pans from the plates. In pre-school three year olds and four year olds are educated together, this is beneficial for both age ranges. The older children provide a model of learning for the younger children, and develop their own independence and confidence by being 'the big ones'. The presence of an adult at an activity doubles the length of time children concentrate on it. The high number of adults in preschools therefore gives children the support and endorsement they need to sustain concentration on more demanding work. With plenty of individual attention children can also extend their vocabularyby discussing objects and sharing experiences.

Countries which achieve high educational standards often have children starting school at six or seven. "There is no reason for parents to assume that schools or nursery classes will provide a better education than pre-schools," said Clare. "The Audit Commission report 'Under Fives Count' last year stated, 'the best playgroups can satisfy the standards of professional educationalists. High quality can be found in any type of setting and there is no conclusive evidence that one type of provision consistently outperforms any other type educationally.' "It is important to remember, a quality educational environment has got to be a caring one."

If you decide that none of these are for you, why not try new, improved Loony. Yes, the Official (reinvented) Monster Raving Loony Party will be there for you. In the time honored tradition of all political parties, we will offer you whatever you want in return for your vote and will change our minds after being elected. What about policies? Well for starters we will cut defences - to about four foot in height so you can talk to your neighbours. We
will encourage love-ins for pensioners to keep them warm in winter. We intend to 'Save the Plankton.' Millions of poor little plankton are being swallowed daily by great big whales. The Loony policy on the NHS is to privatise it and make it so expensive that poor people cannot afford it. That way all the poor people will die and there will be no more poverty. New Loony will encourage research into some of the burning questions of our time such as 'Is the sun afraid of the dark?' You never see it out at night do you?

Pensioner votes count With a general election about to be called in the next few months, Age Concern is urging pensioners to make their voice heard. If you cannot get out to cast your vote, apply early for a proxy vote. The ten million retired people nationwide constitute nearly a quarter of the electorate and it is important to act now to ensure that politicians give greater priority to issues such as job discrimination, pensions, and care provision. Some pensioners may be unable to get to their local polling station to vote because they are ill or because they are away from home. If this is the case they can apply for a proxy vote (whereby a friend or relative votes on their behalf), or a postal or 'postal proxy' vote.

British doctor evacuated from Zaire A doctor, who has close links with St Mary's Church in Lydiard Park, has been evacuated from northeast Zaire because of the recent fighting, writes Susan White. Dr Francesca Elloway had to leave the country after shelling began in the town of Aru, where she works for the Church Mission Society (CMS). She last visited St Mary's in the summer during a holiday in the UK. The church has supported the CMS for many years and has been using Francesca's reports to focus its prayers over recent weeks. For the past three years Francesca has been working for the health service run in the northeast by the Anglican Church in Zaire, where there is no state-run medical service. She has been training nurses and supervising six local health centres in the diocese of Boga. In a country where 1 child in 12 dies before the age of 12, the Boga Health Zone has an exceptionally high 95% immunisation rate.
In a letter just received by St Mary's, Francesca described the chaos caused as shells began to land in Aru: "Almost immediately it seemed as if the whole population took to the road, mostly by foot and carrying on their heads what possessions they could."

She is waiting anxiously for news of her Zairian colleagues but communication is difficult. At the moment, there is no way of getting supplies into the country and the retreating Zairian army has looted some of the health centres.
