Albania appeal backing needed

Saturday morning movies for kids are back As a result of parental demand, the MGM Cinema at the Shaw Ridge Leisure Park are hying an experiment with showing Saturday morning matinees for youngsters in February.

A massive appeal to help Albanian children in hospitals and orphanages has been launched by people in Wootton Bassett and they're calling for others further afield to help them. The Wootton Bassett Feed the Children Appeal have given themselves just two months to fill four huge lorries with 120 tons of desperately needed goods for Albanian children. Departure date is Saturday 7 March and the appeal has a warehouse ready to take: food - tinned, baby foods and dry goods (milk powder, pasta, rice, sugar) * non-prescription medecines, cotton wool, plasters, bandages, etc.

toiletries - soap, shampoo, disinfectant clothes/shoes for children up to 18 year olds childrenstoys (not cuddly ones), picture books, skipping ropes, sports gear.

IIf you can make a donation of goods, Toothill and Freshbrook Community Centres and the West Swindon shopping centre are acting as local collecting points.

Buy a pizza, help buy an incubator Mike and Les Grey from West Swindon have committed themselves to help the starving children of Albania. Long distance lorry driver Les Grey, from Belsay, Toothill is giving up a week's holiday to drive an articulated lorry to Albania loaded with donated goods. "We'll be driving down through Italy and will be based in a secure camp in Albania," said Les. "From there we'll distribute smaller loads to childrens hospitals. I imagine we'll see some shocking scenes. If we can help a little, it'll be worth it." Pizza shop owner brother Mike of Shaw's Pizzarama has set himself the target of raising £600 in six weeks to buy an incubator for premature babies. He has promised to donate £1 for every super sized pizza purchased with the voucher on page 6 and 50p forevery regular sized pizza bought by customers

Caravan man wins stay of eviction A 130 name petition signed by Grange Park residents has shown how strongly they want a caravan dweller to live where he has been for the last fourteen years - long before they arrived. Bert Cheeseman, 65, featured on the Link's front page last month, has lived in a caravan off Hay Lane since 1978, on a site licensed to him by land owners Bradley Homes. Just before Christmas the company tried to evict him with three days notice, so that the site could be handed over to Thamesdown as public open space. Bert is well known to people walking on Shaw Ridge and his many friends rallied around to defend his rights and stop any chance of an immediate eviction. Bradley gave Bert an official notice to quit by the end of January, but

Toothifi's neighbourhood community worker Miriam Minty will be on maternity leave from 2 February and expects to return to the area in mid-June. Thamesdown Council's Community Development Division is expected to fill the postona temporary basis so that local groups continue to receive support and advice.

The Toothill After School Club offers play care facilities to parents of children aged between 5 and 11 years living in Toothill.

Youth evenings The success of the youth club on Tuesday evenings at Toothill Community Centre has encouraged the opening of a second session on Thursdays, specifically for older teenagers. The leaders of the West Swindon primary schools football league will be playing with even more confidence, now that they have a new strip. Albania collection gets underway Parents and children at Westlea School held a collection for the Wootton Bassett Albania Appeal at the end of January and produced 60 black bags of clothing and toys, and two big boxes of tinned food. Parent organiser Judith Blake was so overwhelmed by the response that she wrote the following poem:

Neighbours argue in Birdcombe Road An attempt to make a Westlea street less dangerous to children has become an arguement between residents. Birdcombe Road resident Philip Rashid organised a meeting in his house before Christmas to discuss the safety of children who play in the cul-de-sac. 'People drive into the road without a thought that there could be a child in the road," said Philip. "We want the shrub bed which hides the children replaced by a play area and also came up with the idea of creating a community garden at the other end of the road. "1 invited people in the street to come to second meeting to talk about how we could make the road safer, more attra ctive and generally a nicer place to live, but there were so many objections thatit had to be cancelled." Letters to Phil expressed disgust that he should be suggesting that residents take responsiblity for the public areas around their houses and telling him children should be kept off the road by their parents. However no sooner had the meeting been cancelled when objectors were on his doorstep complaining that it should go ahead. "All I wanted was a discussion, not abuse, but at least the issue of

Pensioner resident Ted Fisher agreed that some drivers need to slow down but thought a play area instead of a shrub bed was a bad idea. Another meeting was finally convened on 30 January to allow all points of view to be expressed.

I joined the Sea Cadets nearly two years ago. I wanted to do something different, something challenging. I'd spent enough school holidays kicking a ball about or watching TV, so when the chance came along I thought, why not? What have I got to lose? The answer was nothing at all. I met some good friends at Cadets, we have a great laugh at our unit. All the lads are friendly and when we go away together, which is very often, we meet otherunit's boys and girls and compete against them. The competition is stiff but very worthwhile. Lastyearduring the summer holidays I had just one week at home, the rest of the time I went away on different courses. The first three weeks I stayed on H.M.S. Kent in Portsmouth. During the last week we met cadets from Canada, Belgium, Bermuda and America. They were really nice people. We joined in with them and did sailing, canoeing, camping, shooting, orienteering and power boating. Some cadets sailed overnight on a small yacht. I was watching a holiday programme the other night and it fea-

tured a multi-activity holiday for 12-16 year olds. It looked okay, but they didn't seem to do as much as us in a week. The cost to them was £239, our summer camps cost about £20 per week and that includes travel.

The next course we went on was a sailing week at our local sailing club, so that we could brush up on our sailing skills before going to Weymouth for a week where we were coached in sailingand advanced our sailing qualification. All this travelling about probably seems expensive, but it's not. The majority of courses only cost about £1 per day and that includes travel. The staff at our our unit are really good, very professionalbut friendly. They work very hard for us and so do our committee. As a registered charity we have to do a certain amountof fundraising. Butitdoesn't interfere with the fun. At first my Mum worried whether I was going to be alright. You know, the usual stuff 'is it safe?', 'are you left alone?', 'be careful.' Of course there is a certain element of risk in hobbies like sailing, canoeing, powerboating, abseiling, five a side football etc. But every possible precaution is taken and I've not heard of anything more than the odd cut or bump. The staff-cadet ratio is always at least one adult to six cadets. So there is always someone on hand to help in a crisis or even if you just want to talk about a problem you may have. Last year we visited our affiliated ship H.M.S. Turbulent, which is a nuclear submarine. We actually slept on board the sub which was great. The ship's company were a really good bunch of lads who looked after us very well. Every so often, usually for Ree membrance Sunday and things like that, we parade through the streets inourbestuniforms. Sometimes the

I'm a lot more confident than I used to be and more disciplined and a lot more aware of other people's needs. This has all happened in a good, safe, friendly environment. The Sea Cadets corps has a lot to offer at very little cost and I'm surprised more boys and girls don't take advantage of it. How to join: The nearest Sea Cadet unit is at TS Turbulent in Wootton Bassett. Young people can join just before their twelfth birthday. A junior section for 10 to 12 year olds is being planned. Townswomen helps Prospect Sally Davis reports: At the January meeting of the West Swindon Townswomen's Guild, we were very pleased to pass over to Mr Arthur Mason of Prospect Foundation, a cheque for £130. This was raised by the Guild with a craft stall, a Ploughman's lunch and a garden party in the summer, and also a collection each meeting of old pennies. Mr Mason thanked us and said he was sorry he could not stay to hear our speaker, Anna Carling talking about aromatherapy, especially as the essential oils are used at the hospice. They do, in fact help and comfort the patients a lot. The Guild meets every 2nd Thursday in the month, in the Gradwell Room, Link Centre at 2pm, for a social afternoon with speakers. Our

next meeting will have Mike Crowley from the Thamesdown Tourist Information office to tell us of local places and holidays to enjoy. Summer is coming, so why not plan now! We shall all take a trip to Warwick Castle in May. The play reading group meets bi-weekly, skittles will also be twice a month and we meet for a craft afternoon each month, not only to knit and sew, but also to 'put the world to rights'. Francis Leung, well known to many people as the proprietorof the Freshbrook Takeaway since 1982, opened The Havelock Restaurant last November. The new venue is already making a name for itself in the town for its good cooking and friendly welcome. Francis, who managed two Swindon restaurants before opening the takeaway unit when Freshbrook Village Centre was built, said a good partnership was the secret of a successful restaurant. "I've wanted to open my own restaurant for many years but it's important to have a good chef to work with. I met him last year and the premises came availableand wewere able to start." The well placed town centre restaurant in Havelock Street can cater for 100 people on two floors, the upper floor being available for pri-

The Link magazine ran a competition in October for Thamesdown Council's Community Development Division to name the new social hail erected on the Westlea School site. Tony Hillier, Community Activities Officer responsible for the management of the Link Centre Community Suite for the last sixteen months has moved on to another post with Thamesdown Council. In mid-January he took up the job as Senior Grants Officer in the Community Development Department, responsible for administering and monitoring grants to voluntary organisations in Swindon like Relate, Alcohol Advisory Centre, Druglink and Rape Crisis Line. The Council's community devel-

opment committee allocates around £800,000 to over 70 organisations. Tony said he was sorry to be leaving the Link Centre as he had enjoyed the friendly and warmcontact with the people who use the Community Suite. He added that the Suite was a great resource which needed further development in the future. The Community Activities Officer job will be advertised within Thamesdown Council and further afield later, if no suitable candidate is found.

Sunday - a day for rest or trade? With the pre-Christmas uproar about Sunday trading still going strong, we asked Rev. John Flory, a member of the West Swindon Ecumenical Church team, to consider the issues

What should be done about the now widespread law-breaking going on in our midst. The 1950 Shops Act is being flouted by hypermarkets who are only too ready to use the law when their profitability is threatened by shop-lifters? We all know that the 1950 Act needs to be up-dated for retailing in the 1990's, but this will only happen when the political party in power is prepared to give time to it. Meanwhile the Big Boys are not being prosecuted and our orderly democracy is under threat. Despite what may be read in the papers, I have not met any employees from management down - and I know quite a few - who does not admit in private that they are against Sunday Trading. Nor do I believe that in the end it will be more profitable for the stores. We are not going to spend more on provisions by being able to buy them seven days a week. The cost of openingon Sundays will have to be recovered from us, the customers.

Higher prices are inevitable. Sunday IS special - for lots of people, and not just those who take the Christian faith seriously - and this is reflected in our laws, as well as the laws of all EEC countries, to be kept as a day for rest, family, community and worship. The National Chamber of Trade, the Cooperative Union, USDAW (the shopworkers union) and all the major Church denominations have together made carefully thought out proposals for the reform of the outdated law. These are based on exempt SHOPS - those needed for recreation, emergencies, social gatherings and the travelling public- rather than GOODS as is the present Act. As a Christian, I want to obey God's law about keeping Sunday holy. Unlike our laws, His do not become outdated - they are true for all time, and given us outof love and for our good. Book early for summer school A local school is planning an exciting fortnight of activities for children during the summer holidays. Staff at Greendown Community School are organising coaching schools for to l4 year old s in trampoline, tennis, gymnastics and dance,basketball, and soccer, which will involve players from Swindon Town and a tour round the County Ground. There will also be a multi-sports programme where youngsters can have a go at all the different activities on offer. Children aged 3 to 9 will have a separate summer school in gymnastics, dance, arts and craft. The Greendown Summer School takes place on weekdays from Monday 20 July until Friday 31 July, from lOam to 3pm. All coaches will be fully qualified and the lunch break will be supervised. 23 Ecumenical Parish of West Swindon & The Lydiards

For some time, during 1991 residents in the vicinity of the Shaw Ridge Leisure Complex had voiced disquiet about the behaviour of people using the footpaths which link or pass nearprivate housingestates. The main problems centred around the late evening and early hours of the morning as revellers made their way home from drinking at various locations around Swindon. The bulk of complaints concerned rowdyism, criminal damage to property, urinating in a public place and drunkenness. Local councillors Jo Stevens and Rosemary Saunders contacted me to see what could be done to improve matters. 'Operation Dedicated' was then devised whereby a group of Special Constables met the residents/media at a meeting and formulated an

action plan. Acting Section Officer Scratchley and the team of Specials then patrolled the footpath complex at optimum times for a month over the Christmas period - a task manpowershortages precluded Regular Officers from performing. Specials arrested three persons for criminal damage, drunk in charge of a motor vehicle and wanted on warrant for theft. In addition, they advised and dispersed numerous groups of rowdy youths and by the end of the month the problem had all but disappeared. A successful operation which, hopefully, can be repeated to tackle like problems which effect the quality of life of the residents of West Swindon. This project proved that working together as a 'team' the community can achieve almost anything - but miracles take a little longer!!!

Call for special summer operation Life is quieter now for Paul Stevens and his family from Wenslydale Close,Ramleaze and his neighbours. His house is located close to a main footpath leading from Shaw Ridge Leisure Park and the West Swindon Centre and for months people using the footpath have caused damage and a great deal of anxiety. Aggravation caused by passing yobs included • a six foot tree stake through front window whilst Mrs Stevens was alone in the house with the children • people inthebackgardendrumming on the patio doors and screaming abuse • damagetocarsand gardens near the footpath route • shouting and swearing from people with no thought to the households they were passing. At one time before Christmas he was going to bed fully clothed so

that he could leap up as soon there was noise and trouble outside. "It was a bit frightening at times," said Paul who has put up 3,000 watts of security lighting around his house to deter intruders. "The police said they didn't have the resources to patrol Shaw Ridge intensively, so we're all glad that the Specials were given the chance to take on the project. It put the yobs off over the Christmas period and so far things have been quiet." Residents in the area are now waiting for the warmer weather to see if the trouble starts up again. The 'tube park' play area at the top of Shaw Ridge has been a favourite haunt for teenagers for the last two summers. They congregate and create a great deal of noise which is easily heard in houses two hundred yards down the hill. "1 hope the Specials will be able to return if the noise and disruption starts up again," said Paul
