Leisure Park pulls in keen interest The proposals for the Shaw Ridge Leisure Park, opposite the West Swindon Centre, have been greeted with enthusiasm. The exhibition of plans and a scale model in the Link Centre during the last week of January was visited by hundreds of people. The Leisure Park, featured in last month's Link Magazine, will contain a ten screen cinema, a 324ane ten pin Superbowl, nightclub, a luxury hotel with conference centre and three restaurants. It will be one of the first schemes in the country where a range of integrated leisure facilities are combined on one site. "The reaction from visitors has been very favourable," said Michael Oldrieve, for site developers Carter Commercial Developments of Bristol. "Most people have been saying 'great,' when is it going to open." Ian Riches for cinema operators CIC/ UA (UK) Limited said the response from the general public had been terrific. "I was involved in the original proposal to build a 10 screen cinema on the site over two years ago. So I'm delighted the present scheme is well thought of." Many residents from Eastleaze visited the exhibition and expressed fears about the development according to Mr. Oldrieve. "They were obviously concerned about the noise and the increased traffic on roads close to their houses. We had good discussions and I hope their fears were allayed by the efforts we are making to minimise intrusion by offering high quality facilities." There were mixed views from residents in Goldsborough Close. "My first reaction was to think 'not in my back yard,' said Phil Lewis, who overlooks the site. "But Carters have done a lot by sinking the buildings into the ground. Its a good scheme and very convenient for us; let's hope they live up to their promises. Karen Codling said it was hard to tell how the finished buildings would look. "But with two young boys growing up in West Swindon, the Leisure Park will improve our social life no end." Nick Belson said he understood there was a great deal that could be done about the plans. "Originally the site was to be offices, then a cinema on its own, now it a

there will be disturbance and an invasion of privacy for those who live closest." Shiela Cracknell from Freshbrook expressed concern about the traffic congestion on Whitehill Way and the need for better pedestrian access to and from, and within, the Leisure Park. I think the needs of people on foot have been underestimated; the plans seem to be geared up for the car driver. The majority of pedestrians will have to use a poorly lit, often flooded underpass. And getting across the site to and from the Pizzahut looks hazardous." LiThere is a chance for residents to meet local councillors to express their views on the Leisure Park on Thursday 16th February, 8p.m. in the Community Suite, Link Centre. The scheme goes before Thamesdown Council's planning committee on 27 February.

Takeaway customers to help community groups A West Swindon fast food takeaway is celebrating five years of successful trading in the area and wants customers, old and new, to help them help local community groups. The well known Trawlerman Takeaway at the West Swindon Centre has served fish and chips to thousands of customers during the last five years and is launching a scheme to assist local organisations with cash for special projects. During the week beginning Monday 6th February until Saturday 11th February, 10% of every sale at the Trawlerman will be put into a fund to which local community groups can apply. Its the first time a local business has attempted such a project according to Mike Grey, area manager for Coach Caterers who operate the Trawlerman. "We've been successful over the last five years and this scheme is a good way of putting something back into the community. I hope our customers will like the idea and look forward to some

interesting requests from community groups. Coach Caterers will be matching the total amount raised at the Trawlerman during the week, so it's likely that around ÂŁ800 will be available for distribution. Letters are being sent out to West Swindon groups about the scheme. We will be looking for projects from groupswh ich will allowthem to do something which theywould not normallydo, such as taking children on a museum trip or a pensioners club bringing in a disco dancing demonstration. Obviously if the group is willing to put some money into the activity, there will be more to go round. "Its going to be Interesting to see if customers and groups take to this idea. Fifty-three people sat down to lunch together for the first time in two months on 18th January when Toothill's Pensioner Lunch Club restarted. It had closed down because there was nobody to organise it. Now Mrs. Edith Tinson from Moredon has taken on the task of coordinating the club with a team of volunteers. "I'm 75, but I like catering a great deal. I've been in it all my life and I've worked with the elderly before. We've had a few little problems on our first day, but we've all enjoyed ourselves." Roast beef, yorkshire pudding roast and boiled potatoes and two veg. was served up and similar gatronomic delights are planned for future weeks. "It's nice to have the club back," said Ada Fowler from Lombard Court. "We've had a lovelylunch today." The Toothill Lunch Club meets every Wednesday at Toothill Community Centre and is open to retired people across West Swindon. Work has started on Freshbrook's church, illustrated above, to be completed by the autumn. The building will seat 200 people in a main hail. There is kitchen, servery and lounge suitable for smaller meetings and rooms on the first floor The Freshbrook Evangelical Church presently meets in Freshbrook Community Centre and numbers over a hundred people on a Sunday morning. Services take place at 11a.m. and 630p.m. The new building will be used for community purposes in addition to church services. Fence causes offence Residents have raised objection to the high fence erected around the Freshbrook Church site in preparation for building works. Taking up the problem, local councillor Bob Pixton says the fence has caused a hazard at the junctions of Worsley Road and Uxbridge Road and the cul-de-sac leading to Windmill School. "It was impossible to see round the corners originally and the adjustments made in the fence line improved things only marginally. "1 have asked Thamesdown's road engineers to talk to the site manager to see if the fence can be moved again, to improve the site line for pedestrains and drivers." Reverend Peter Grainger, for the church, said they were happy to move the fence to make the corners easier to see around, when agreement was reached with council officers.

Credit Union makes money matters easier January saw the first of two Credit Unions launched in West Swindon after months of planning. Kingsley Matthews from Grange Park who has been coordinating their development explains how cooperative money management can help people hard pressed by money matters. Today's world survives on debt and most of us are in debt. Some of us find it hard to manage and run into difficulties, especially when we have that sudden emergency - the washing machine breaks down, the kids need new shoes or any of the 101 things that can go wrong in the best managed households. A group of people have been working for some time on a scheme to help with these problems in West Swindon and we have now reached a stage where we have launcheda savings clubs, for Freshbrook/Grange Park. It will shortly become Credit Unions. People who join a Credit Union save for a few months and then become eligible for a loan. Unlike banks and other financial institutions we will not pressure you to take out a loan, but it's there if you want it. We pay dividends on your savings and charge low rates of interest. How can we do this?

We don't, you do. The members of the Credit Union own it. Everybody with £1 or more in savings is entitled to one vote in how the Credit Union is run. We are co-operatives and we practise co-operative money management. As co-operatives we not only help each other, but we also work with Credit Unions in other areas as well. So members will not only have the strength of other members in Freshbrook behind them, but also Credit Unions in other parts of Swindon. Remember the Credit Union motto: Not For Profit, Not For Charity, But For Service. Why not talk to us about joining? Market days West Swindon could have its own open air market soon. The weekly market on the Link Centre coach park is to be held on Tuesdays instead of Thursdays as first proposed. Thamesdown Council is inviting tenders from market operators and a start date will be announced when one is chosen.

Karen Moore writes: Neighbours of Westlea is a local group created to develop and encourage a community spirit in the area. We meet every Thursday in the Community Room at Westlea School. We have changed our time slightly and now meet slightly earlier at 1.30p.m. New members are particularly sought after and welcomed. Thames Water to push for sewage works upgrade Plans to spend £20 million on upgrading Swindon's sewage works at Barnfield Road were explained to a meeting of residents held on 9th January in the Community Room at Westlea School. Over the years people living in West Swindon, especially Westlea, have complained of smell from the works which is about a mile away. Roger Manion, Thames Water Authority project engineer for the improvement works, said the aim was to improve the quality of effluent flowing back into the River Ray, the problem of smell and the visual appearance of the site. vide the Barnfield Road complex with the capacity to process sewage from Swindon's estimated population in 2006. Some of the Westlea residents said the works should be moved to an out of town site and at a public meeting at Rodbourne Community Centre in Swindon, the Water Authority was asked to reveal the cost of building a new plant on land owned by Thames Water. Mr. Manion said, "We have undertaken complex calculations and we have decided that upgrading the present site is the most cost-effective solution." In reply, Coun Des Moffat said that the refusal to make the costs public made him suspicious of Thames Water's intentions.

Gentle music & movement A Music and Movement Group for the over 45s in the Community Suite at the Link Centre has started with great enthusiasm. The first eight members of the group came together through word of mouth, but now that it is off the ground they are looking for more people who would like a bit of gentle stretching to music. Sandra Whitcher takes the group and says it will help keep the body supple and strong.

"It was the first time I had done any keep fit for two years," said Nora Dukes of Ramleaze. "It was very enjoyable, not too strenuous." Eighty two year old Frances Jarrett of Gainsborugh Court said she had come to see what it was like. "It was very good for the first time; I'll be here every week." Shaw Ridge - Past and Present by Chris Chandler, Community Archaeologist The scheme for the development of Shaw Ridge as a leisure park featured in the photograph above and detailed in January's Link, is the latest in a long line of uses for this area. 3000 years ago a settlement lay on the northern fringe of the area, taking advantage of the higher, dryer ridge top. Nearly 2000 years ago, the Romans exploited the claylands for a pottery industry, building a complex of structures where St. Peter's Church and carpark now stand. They were used for 200 years, from the second to the fourth centuries, before the industry moved elsewhere.

1000 years later, the site was part of the isolated farmsteads that were the hamlet of Shaw. One such farm was built opposite the new St. Peter's and consisted of a crude stone floor with 2 foot thick walls. The farm's arable agriculture is fossalised in the 'ridge and furrow' running from the plantation down to Whitehill Way. Shaw Ridge has always reflected the needs of the society of the day, and this is maintained in the leisure park proposal. Tennis Centre invites you in to try The Delta Tennis Cente opens for business in just a few weeks, but there is a chance for groups and individuals to get a preview before the official start date. Handover date is targetted for 28 February and subject to completion of the centre, the first two weeks will be spent showing off the facility to community groups, schools, tennis clubs and interested residents. "Visits will be practical, so bring the right footwear," says Tennis Development Officer Neil Allen. "The floor area of the four indoor courts is twice as big as the sports hall at Link Centre. So visitors will be able to have a game of short tennis or try a few shots of the real thing, or return a few serves from the tennis machine." West Swindon Biathalon will test fitness Fitness fanatics and people who want to push themselves to the limit will be glad to know that there will be a 25 mile biathalon around the streets of West Swindon on Sunday 19 March. Such statements as 'they don't do proper P.E. do they,' or 'they don't believe in competition at Greendown are common place. I therefore welcome this opportunity to explain a little about the sporting opportunities and experience on offer to our students. The students experience physical education through two avenues, one as part of the core curriculum and the other, a recreation programme based at the

For three years I have been sponsoring Tawatchai, a little eight year old boy in Thailand, through the Christian Children's Fund, C.C.F., whose aims are to help needy children in poor countries throughout the world, regardless of race, colour or religion. I had become very close to Tawatchai and his family through our exchange of letters, pictures and photographs. Last November I realised a dream and made my first trip abroad to visit Tawatchai. 'My family', along with C.C.F workers and an interpreter met me at the little airport

a small classroom where pre-school children could begin basic education, learn songs and play, much as in our own playschools. More importantly they receive food and health care. I visited several hilitribe villages and saw conditions far more primitive than those in Tawatchai's village. Here also the C.C.F. was working to improve life for the villagers. They had installed a water supply, introduced schooling and initiated many self-help projects. I saw the C.C.F. doing much positive work in the area I visited, while the culture

Sylvia Senior and the Wirakam family soon after they met for the first time in the airport lounge in the north of Thailand. The joy we felt at seeing each other was mutual. I felt immediately welcome and among friends. Tawatchai lives in a small village, in a simple wooden house raised off the ground like all village houses. The one main room contained only the family bed, just a bare wooden platform. In the one other smaller room the family ate their basic diet of rice, vegetables and occasionally, meat, which they cooked on an open fire outside. Tawatchai accompanied me throughout my trip. He talked to me constantly, holding my hand and proudly carrying my camera, which seemed too big and heavy for this little boy. It did not matter that we did not understand each other. Being together was enough. My letters to Tawatchai had been carefully kept. My pictures and drawings were displayed in the house, and photos of my family hung over the bed, alongside a picture of the king! Royalty is very important to Thai people, and pictures of their king are seen everywhere, even in the humblest house. With the help of C.C.F. and Government welfare workers I saw much more than if I had been a conventional tourist. I visited Tawatchai's school, where I was proudly shown the classrooms, canteen and kitchen, and garden plots tended by the children to provide food for their use. The children entertained me with Thai music played on traditional instruments. The C.C.F had provided

and religion of the people was preserved and encouraged. I began sponsoring because I wanted to help. Although I knew I could not help all needy people, I felt that helping one child was better than not helping at all. Sponsoring costs me just ÂŁ12 per month - so little to most of us, yet this small contribution ensures that one child has the basic necessities of life, enough food, clothing, education and health care. But sponsoring is more than sending money. It is loving, caring and sharing, and sponsoring is commitment. In my short visit I had become a part of Tawatchai's family, and I felt equally they were part of mine. "When will you come again?" they asked me. It all started as a once-ina-lifetime trip, but now I know I must return. To a sponsored child, who does not understand what sponsoring means, they know their sponsor as the person who provides love and care as their own parents do. They call their sponsor 'Mother' or 'Father'. As I left, Tawatchai and his sisterhanded me a bunch of silk flowers, with a little note; "Have a safe journey home mother. Come back soon." A simple gift, but worth so much more to me than any of the more expensive mementos I carried home to my family. Exhibitions & Children's books The library has quite a lot to offer during February by way of displays and exhibitions. This year's exhibition from W.A.T.A. stays with us until 4th February, so if you have not had a chance during January to pop along to see this excellent children's art work then do take this final opportunity. The Brunel Artists Spring Exhibition will run from 8th February until 22nd - the high calibre paintings from this group of local artists sell fast so do come along early. There will also be a display of information for consultation in the library produced by the Advertising Standards Authority. This will be available between 1st and 12th February. At the end of the month, commencing 25th February the Swindon Artists Society will present their spring collection of work. The Society will be organising various artistic demonstrations and training sessions during the period of the exhibition. As there seems to be a temporary shortage of good new adult fiction about at the moment, and since I've had a request to talk about childrens books, this month I'm devoting the 'book bit' entirely to a selection of some of the new treats for kids. (Back to the Top 10 titles next month!) We have a wonderful 'Treasury of Dragons, Giants and Monsters' published by Kingfisher with selected stories by Caroline Royds. this book is absolute magic on every page with exciting stories from a range of authors including Oscar Wilde, Margaret Mahy, John Cunliffe and E. ARTS SCENE West Swindon's puppeteers Africa Week at Greendown Secondary and primary school children take part in multicultural learning

Youngsters at West Swindon's Greendown Community School will spend the first three days of February immersed in African cultures as part of a major multicultural awareness initiative aimed at both students and staff. The whole of the second year, about 180 children, will work with Jenako Arts, a black arts group who take various aspects of African and Caribbean cultures into schools. Arts Coordinator Jools Dowling says the week will be very exciting with tremendous long term benefits. "During the first two days, the students will be talking about what they know of Africa, including whatever mis-

conceptions and myths theyhave. Then they will take part in music, art, sculpture and batik printing workshops. They will also develop skills in storytelling and narrative drama. "On the third day, they will rehearse and then perform a production based on what they have learnt to an invited audience of primary school children. "This is going to be a major event in the school year. It will be a fun and an active way of learning and will help our students and staff understand more about other cultures. It will also challenge our stereotypes and viewpoints about the position of black people in this country."

Go-Kart Nick looks for sponsors Imagine zooming around a race track just two inches from the ground. Nick Clark (22) from Meares Drive, Shaw does it most weekends and is becoming more and more successful. Having just completed his second season of kart racing in the highly competitive 100cc class, Nick is looking for better results, with new equipment, in the season which is about to start. Last year, he competed against heavily sponsored and experienced racers with highly tuned engines

but still managed good placings and won several trophies. This season he starts with new powerful engines and a better chassis. The kart and its maintenance of course is very expensive and Nick is eager to receive financial to keep him competitive. Practical assistance in the use of a van would alsobealso be an asset. At present he is somewhat restricted to club meetings but would like to move up to race in the major RAC championships, if sponsorship is forthcoming.

Lunch club for Link Centre A new lunch club for retired people at the Link Centre is being planned, but the idea is very much at an early stage. The people who would like to see a lunch dub at the centre want to meet others in West Swindon who would help organise and also those who would ii-_- it. The Link Centre is well placed for elderly people to enjoy a lunch with others, according to Community Activities Officer Martha Parry. It is centrally located and can be reached by bus from the parts of West Swindon where lunch clubs do not already meet. "Lunch clubs in Wiltshire are traditionally run by volunteers coordinated by a paid organiser; a grant from the County Council meets some of the costs. So we need to bring people together to talk about

It is hoped that a creche will be run alongside the lunch club so that parents with child care responsibilities can also join in and give a hand. As a trained nurseryman, David Greatham, from Freshbrook, has developed tremendous knowledge and experience in the propagation of rare plants. In November he set up Mill Lane Gardens to make his skills available to householders in West Swindon.

However his main line of business will be in designing and constructing new gardens. He has found that people do not have time to create interesting plots, especially when they have just moved in. He can also maintain gardens at rented properties or for those who are too busy.

Spring Greens by Claire Beaton Spring bulbs are all very attractive but they always seem a grace note; something to fill up space until the real plants start growing. Usually there are few gardens open for visiting in February and even if you do travel to see them, they have little on display other than vast sweeps of daffodils, snowdrops or other early spring bulbs. In pleasing contrast there are the fresh, seemingly indestructible delights of the Euphorbia and Hellebore families. These are both families of herbaceous perennials; plants that grow in a bushy clump, sprouting fresh from the base each year. Most plants of this sort die down each autumn as that year's growth is killed by the shorter, colder days of winter. However, there are plants in this category that are evergreen; a clump grows one year, over-winters and produces flowers the following spring. Euphorbias and Hellebores are impressive examples of this type of plant. Hellebore niger is the most commonly known example of the Hellebore family, being the Christmas rose frequently pictured on Christmas cards. I have found it the mostdifficultto grow. Like lily-of-the-valley, it flourishes when and where it decides it is suited and will not be persuaded to settle by assiduous attention from the gardener. Easier relatives are H. corsicus and H. orientalis. The first has applegreen, cupped flowers in a bunch at the end of each stem that first open in February and will last until they shed seed in June. The leathery, mid-green leaves each have three saw-edged leaflets and form a hardy evergreen clump about 2ft by 2ft for most of the year. The flowers and foliage will be damaged in the hardest winter frosts but most years they give a good display. H. orientalis is known as the Lenten Rose, is a little smaller and a little later in flowering, but

comes in a range of 'colours' from greenish-white to deepest plumpurple. Some of the paler flowers will be speckled with purple spots inside the cupped flower. Its as tough as old boots and will seed about with wild abandon if allowed to. The only reason garden centres charge so much for a plant is because it takes about three years to grow to flowering size. Euphorbias are less leathery in appearance with each stem plumed with soft strap-shaped leaves. In some varieties like E. wulfenii and E. characias these are grey and can suffer in winter frosts. The green types are more robust. Earliest of all is E. polychroma which makes a satisfying clump of new green in the border in late February, early March. It suddenly appears in the border in the manner of a posy pulled by a magician out of a top hats. The small green bun of over-wintering stems suddenly expands and each stem is tipped with a bunch of bright acid-yellow 'flowers'; a conjuring trick identical to that performed by the Christmas poinsettia, adapting leaves to provide a bright display. Some may argue that the crisp yellow, fresh green and plum purple that these plants use to decorate their evergreen foliage can hardly be described as colours at all. However, there can be no dispute that the form of the leaves and flowers is beautiful and with a few years growth they form solid clumps of flourishing green that need no apology for the contribution they make to your garden's spring flowing. Last month I introduced you to Greendown Air Training Corps and a little of it's history and it's objective. This month I would like to tell you very briefly what we achieved last year. As far as possible training is of a practical nature but there is inevita-

bly a certain amount of theory, eg. aircraft recognition, theory of flight etc. Last year was very successful even though we are a new flight and still finding our feet. We managed a certain amount of shooting and flying (glider and Hercules) but we are making every effort to get a lot more

This included making their own shelter for thenight (no sleeping bag or tents), building a fire and cooking a complete meal (no tins), night initiative tests, a 7 mile route march in which they happened upon a a road accident and administered first aid to a high standard and followed correct procedures. Now if that doesn't get our teenagers thinking then I don't know what Will. This means destroying the rain forest, and displacing the Indians who live there.
