throughout the borough. To anyone who works as a carer, we thank you. And let’s not forget all those who work in the retail sector; without them we wouldn’t be able to do our last minute Christmas shopping in Swindon or take advantage of the Boxing Day sales!
There is a lovely tale of a lad in a nativity play. He was chosen to be the innkeeper because he wasn’t very good at remembering, so all he had to say when Mary and Joseph knocked on the door was “No room, no room.” He practised and practised until he was perfect. The first night came, Mary and Joseph stood before him. After what seemed an age, he said “Of course there is room for two more, come in!” That lad understood what Christmas is about. God always has room for us, especially when everyone else shuts the door in our faces. If we take it seriously then, the Christmas story tells us that everyone is welcome, no matter where or who we are, or what we have done. We find in the Christmas story that God’s love has no limits; God is always ready to say ‘of course there is room, come in.” Merry Christmas! Outline plans for 50 houses between West Swindon and Lydiard Park, off Tewkesbury Way, were displayed to the public at Lydiard House Conference Centre on Wednesday 19 November. Well over 100 people visited to talk to representatives of Taylor Wimpey about the project. Wiltshire Council will make the planning decision and many people are worried that the development, which will be clearly visible from the park, are a precursor to more plans for land between West Swindon and Lydiard Millicent. However Andy Cattermole, planning manager at Taylor Wimpey, said: “We are committed to handing over a significant proportion of the land which is currently in our ownership as a gift to the local community. This will be provided via an appropriate body, and we are currently seeking views on the most suitable organisation. “We are also willing to commit

Friends chairman Mike Bowden said: “As the Friends’ primary role is to protect Lydiard House and park for future generations we were keen to understand the detail of the housing estate proposed. “We were taken aback that, even though the planning application is due in February, the developer was unable or unwilling to answer any questions relating to key points, with Taylor Wimpey amazingly volunteering they hadn’t yet decided whether the estate would be made up of bungalows or two, three, four or five storey houses.
“We had the sense information was being withheld and regrettably the developer was unable to satisfy the Friends that their plan will not permanently destroy the parkland setting of Lydiard House and St. Mary’s Church.” The discussion ended abruptly after a senior member of the Taylor Wimpey team declared it over. Revd Canon Alastair Stevenson, a member of the Friends delegation said: “In my 50-year career I have worked with many different organisations and have never been treated so shabbily in a meeting. My confidence in the consultation process has been undermined.” Mike Bowden added: “I can’t recall a less professional end to any meeting I have attended. Offers of land transfer and other giveaways do nothing to address unacceptable encroachment on one of Swindon’s treasures.” In response a Taylor Wimpey spokesman said: “We do not feel it appropriate to comment on discussions which took place in a private meeting. Rebecca was ‘an inspiration’ Rebecca Rowland, manager of InSwindon has sadly passed away. Rebecca was diagnosed with breast cancer in January 2013 and despite six courses of chemotherapy and five weeks of radiation therapy it was identified that there was secondary cancer attacking three places in and around her brain. New air ambulance is the star attraction in Christmas card range Wiltshire Air Ambulance’s range of Christmas cards features its new helicopter, the Bell 429. One of the seven designs is a painting of the helicopter flying above the iconic Caen Hill Lock Flight in Devizes. The Bell 429 will be operational from 1 January and will be a dedicated air ambulance. Mrs Sarah Rose Troughton, Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of Wiltshire, welcomed the new helicopter at the offical fly-in at Trafalgar Park, near Salisbury. The colour scheme of the new machine is yellow and Wilsthire green. On the belly of the helicopter is a distinctive ‘W’ representing the county. The charity’s partnership with Wiltshire Police for the existing joint helicopter ends this December.
The new Bell 429 will be on active duty from January 2015 Claire Kelly, Head of People, Vision and Values, at Wiltshire Air Ambulance, said: “Our Christmas cards are always very popular. We felt it was important to feature our new helicopter in our Christmas cards this year. “We are making aviation history as the Bell 429 will be
the first to operate in the UK as an air ambulance and we are all looking forward to it.” The Christmas cards range in price from £3 to £4 for a pack of ten cards. Locally the cards are on sale as part of Cards for Good Causes at Central Library, Regent Circus.

Cafe extends Olive branch to disabilities minister Mark Harper, Swindon born MP for Forest of Dean and minister for people with disabilities, took time out of a busy schedule at the end of October to meet staff and volunteers at the Olive Tree Cafe in Cheney Manor and enjoy lunch prepared by them. The cafe, inside Manor Garden Centre, opened in 2011 to provide work opportunities for people with mental health needs, and has become so popular that it is expanding to cope. North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, who enjoys a full English at the Olive Tree as often as he can, said: “I was really pleased Mark was able to visit a Swindon success story. Manager Phyllida Richards and her colleagues give great support and encouragement to the volunteers. The cooking is superb; whether you want to pop in for coffee and cake, or lunch, I would
encourage everybody to try out the Olive Tree.” Catering volunteer Karen Hurley, who started helping at the cafe in March this year, said she was pleased to meet the minister. “I was able to tell him about the very friendly atmosphere and the nice group of people who work at the Olive Tree; it’s a great help to me. After meeting volunteers, talking to Phyllida about the operation of the cafe, and watching his lunch being prepared. Mr Harper said: “There is really important work going on in the Olive Tree and several customers told me they’ve been coming since it opened. Special school launches charity shop Former Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire William Wyldbore-Smith, and patron of Uplands Educational Trust, was the guest of honour at the opening of a charity shop to benefit young people with special needs in Swindon and the surrounding areas. The trust meets the needs of complex learners aged between 11 and 25 by providing unique and innovative learning, working and living provisions. After opening a shop close to Uplands School at Redhouse Village Centre in 2012, the new outlet at 126 Commercial Road again provides young people with special needs the opportunity to take

on all roles within the shop including sorting stock and serving customers. To help Uplands Educational Trust, offer to volunteer to work with young people at the shop or provide donations of good quality clothing, household accessories, games and toys for sale. Concerns over West Swindon library move The transfer of Swindon Council’s leisure facilities to Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) on 1 November has gone as smoothly as can be expected but the proposed relocation of the library at Link Centre is causing concern. The not-for-profit social enterprise trading under the Better brand now has management responsibility for Link Centre, Delta Tennis Centre, Croft Sport Centre, Dorcan Recreational Complex and the Health Hydro - in addition to the day to day operation of the Oasis. In the future customers will be able to order as they approach the restaurant using mobile devices so that their meal will be available as they come through the door. “We currently have 756 staff in the group and are looking to take on another 100. “We signed off fifteen apprentices so far this year and expect to have 25 by the end of 2014. “It’s been a good move coming to Swindon.”

Funded by grants, donations, fundraising and support in kind, it has seen hundreds of volunteers and trainees of all ages and abilities develop skills and confidence, some gaining employment or going on to higher education. Technical operations manager John Islip helps visually impaired presenters to record and produce their shows. Describing how he got involved, he said: “I’ve always been technically minded and I wanted to help out. Being part of the station gives a sense of purpose.” While in Swindon, the duke also paid a visit to Swindon Dance and was treated to an array of different displays, including contemporary, urban and ballet, alongside a tenminute performance by a mixture of current and alumni students. “The visit was a huge success,” said artistic director Marie McCluskey. “It really highlighted the importance of supporting grass roots arts, and the duke thoroughly enjoyed meeting our ex-students. He particularly liked the urban class, and was very impressed with the hip hop moves.”

Having nurtured the likes of Catherine Zeta Jones, Tanwood celebrates 70 years in Swindon
That’s showbusiness... Swindon’s oldest performing arts school and family business is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The school founded by Mollie Tanner in 1944 has nurtured some of the UK’s best talent including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Martin Harvey who played the lead in the West End’s Dirty Dancing the musical, Adam Margelusca who starred in the West End’s Guy’s and Dolls and David Ashley who has appeared in a host of productions including Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats. David is also in this year’s Dick Whittington panto at the Wyvern playing Dame Sarah the Cook. Mollie set up her first dance studio in her family’s garage at Ferndale Road in Swindon and saved her pennies to get dance shoes and equipment she needed by parking bicycles for sixpence. The story of how Tanwood developed as one of the country’s most respected training grounds for young performers and a Swindon institution is rather special. Mollie was the first pupil of Swindon’s biggest showbiz export, Diana
Dawes, and Mollie met her husband and pianist, John Tanwood through Diana’s father Burt Tuck. Both Burt and John worked on the GWR railway together and this is how the friendship began. John and Mollie worked in partnership, with Mollie providing the dance tuition and John the piano accompaniment to generations of pupils at performances, rehearsals, exams and classes. Mollie began her journey teaching dance at Commonweal School under the banner of Swindon Ballet Club and then moved to The Long Room (now The Art Centre in Old Town). In 1948 she bought what was to become Bath Road Studios which remained until the 1990s. In 2003 Mollie’s daughter Pollyann Tanner took over the business so that Mollie could retire, but at 88 she still has the odd pupil that she teaches privately in her home. Mollie said: “One of the biggest highlights for me has been our student garden parties - held every year. It’s a delight to meet Tanwood

To celebrate their 70th year Pollyann organised a ’70 Years of Tanwood Show’ incorporating favourite song and dance numbers from as far back as 1944, with
pupils old and new. Pollyann said: “It’s been a fantastic trip down memory lane connecting with Tanwood pupils from all over the world. I used Facebook to track down thousands of ex-pupils and it was so lovely to find out what they’re up to now. This year has been fantastic for Tanwood and we look forward to continuing our successes into 2015.”

The school is thought to be the only primary in the town where teaching, learning and management utilises a Google environment. Google Chromebooks and tablets are being used throughout the school as well as Google apps to learn how to programme devices like the Sphero Robotic Ball or teach skills on multi-user screens. Headteacher Jane Leo said:
“Teaching is very much human interaction but we use technology to aid the learning process and make communication between staff more effective, as well as to parents. “Staff meetings are now completely different. “Using Google in the cloud is a much more flexible system than we’re used to. “Anybody with access can add comments for all to see in real time, even those who are absent. “All our policy documents are now in the cloud although we maintain paper copies for the benefit of external assessors.”

Skoda’s old Yeti needed a makeover. Now it’s back and a breath of fresh air... The Yeti was starting to show its age so for 2014 Skoda opted for a fairly comprehensive redesign of the crossover’s exterior and it shows. I have been driving the special ’Black Edition’ that is based on the SE trim level and very smart it is too. Powered by a beefy 2.0L diesel engine driving two or four wheels as circumstances dictate, the 138bhp on offer really delivers a lively drive. 320Nm of torque means it can do the business off-road too although it’s still not an out-and-out mudplugger. The rough stuff is best sampled with the six-speed manual car, rather than the optional paddles of a DSG gearbox. There’s also a powerful diesel option with 168bhp which is a more flexible engine that delivers satisfying pace, again best specified with the six-speed manual gearbox for greater user flexibility. Petrol engines are also available. The cabin shows its VW antecedents by remaining typically well-finished and adorned with quality switchgear although it has to be said that the navigation, infotainment screen and connectivity are starting to look dated. S trim versions get air-con,

There are plenty of other good points too: the lightweight, wide-opening doors; the lofty headroom afforded by the boxy profile, and a large, very practical and usefully rectangular boot. The three individual rear seats fold independently and can be removed altogether to make way for a huge 1760L load bay, although the boot with all the seats in place will be
plenty for most families. Reliability has long been a Yeti strength and this is borne out by the car finishing second out of 116 cars in the 2013 JD Power customer satisfaction survey. As mentioned the Yeti offers an engaging drive with first class levels of body control. There‘s hardly any lean into corners for example. Fourwheel drive is rarely called upon, testament to the Yeti’s predictable
body control that’s matched to an absorbent comfortable ride comfort. The changes have breathed new life into the Skoda Yeti, including new engine/gearbox combinations, plus updated cabin trim and even ‘exclusive’ versions. Meet Swindon’s best bus drivers Awards for Phil and John after receiving rave reviews in social media campaign Two bus drivers in Swindon have received recognition of their good customer service skills following hundreds of nominations on social media. Phil Manning from Thamesdown Transport and John Dyer from Stagecoach Ltd attracted overwhelming support, and rave reviews, during the week-long campaign on Facebook. Swindon Travel Choices launched the search for “Swindon’s top driver” in conjunction with Thamesdown Transport and Stagecoach Buses as part of National Customer Service Week (6–12 October). The aim was to seek out and reward great customer service, such as a friendly disposition, good advice, skilful driving or an act of kindness. The winning bus drivers each
received £100 of high street shopping vouchers. There was also a posthumous award for Mick Iles, a Stagecoach driver who passed away recently. “We had a great reaction to the campaign,” says Claire Fleming from Swindon Travel Choices. “We had over 120 comments on the Facebook site, nearly all praising the work of one or more of Swindon’s bus drivers.” It was a tough decision for the

If you pay the assessment you could wait a seriously long time for them to correct the amount after you send in your Return, especially annoying if they owe you money! What to do: If you submit your own VAT Returns, prepare and submit as soon as possible and ignore the assessment. Generally I would say don’t pay anything which has been estimated by HMRC because it could take a long time to put right! Hospice launches new home support scheme Prospect Hospice has started a drive to recruit volunteers who can offer a few hours each week to support patients and their families at home. Trained and supported volunteers visit patients and carers in their homes, offering companionship and assistance with practical tasks, accompanying them to planned appointments and encouraging them to get involved in local activities.
Prospect Hospice is asking people to show their support by signing up to play its weekly £1,000 jackpot lottery in 2015. The Wroughton-based charity, which last year cared for and supported more than 5,700 people, has run its lottery for more than 14 years, making one person £1,000 better off every Friday ever since. With entry to the weekly draw costing just £1 to play, the money raised by the Prospect Lottery makes a real difference to the many patients and families who seek the support of their local hospice. Sarah Bedry of the charity’s fundraising team said: “It’s a great feeling for us to be able to make a call to our jackpot winner each week to let them know that they’ve been lucky enough to win £1,000. “Often they will tell us that they were only playing because they want to support the hospice, and sometimes they will even donate it back to the hospice!” Signing up to the lottery is very simple. The four men met on the rugby touchline while their sons were training in the under 8s at Royal Wootton Bassett RFC. Sam said: “I think it was something to do with our mid-life crisis that got us into the challenge being advertised by Prospect last year. “We set ourselves a target of £8,000 but to raise nearly £5,000 more was fantastic. We’d like to
thank all our supporters for helping us, and our families for putting up with our training regime. “Trekking across the sand dunes was amazing, despite the blistering sun, and some horrendous blisters on our feet.” The dads were joined by eight others from Swindon - Natasha Chesterman, Ali Mair, Hannah Soutar, Danielle Moreton, Rachel Kimber, Rob Simpson, Sharon Newman and Genevieve Arney. It’s a strange time of year in the fitness industry. Some are on a crusade to shape up for the imminent party season, while others put their health on hold in the knowledge that December will offer too many temptations to resist. January is often the allotted time to get things back on track or to finally push the heart rate up past levels usually only reserved for when communicating with parking inspectors or market researchers. For those new to exercise and unsure of the difference between a cross trainer and an X-trainer, it’s the perfect time to explore the gym environment and find out how you see it working for you in the long term. You can also get a feel for important non-fitness related details such as whether the showers work, if equipment is maintained and whether or not you agree with the music policy – all vitally
important nuggets of information. Gym footfall can dwindle towards the end of the year which makes facilities much more appealing to the self-conscious or those who prefer a little more space. But don’t get too comfortable - January brings with it hoards of enthusiastic newcomers. Gyms in Swindon have come a long way in the last 15 or so years in terms of quality and quantity. Make a date with charity calendars Three Swindon photographers who live in Rodbourne have worked together to produce two calendars of exceptional standard, but from two different perspectives. David Stephens and Jenny Hedger have selected their best images taken at touring car championships, shooting the excitement of high speed action at the race track, all fast shutter speeds and blur. By contrast Phil Jefferies had to use every ounce of patience to wait for the right moment to capture wildlife for his calendar. One shot required him to sit in a hide for ten hours before a kingfisher settled for a few moments in front of him. The Link examines how Swindon’s different nationalities and religions celebrate Christmas Have you ever stopped and wondered how other countries and cultures celebrate Christmas? 25 December, 354 BC is the first recorded date in the Christian bible where Christmas was celebrated as a tradition. Although it was actually just a feast rather than the exchange of gifts. The custom of giving and receiving presents reminds us of the presents given to Jesus by the Wise Men: frankincense, gold and myrrh. Swindon’s diverse cultural community will all be celebrating the religious holiday in separate ways, even if it’s just a great opportunity to relax and spend time with friends and family. In Poland, Christmas Eve dinner is the most important of celebrations. Although this meal is reserved for the closest family, it is customary to set an extra plate and seat for an unexpected guest. Most of the dishes served are cooked specifically on this special day and only once a year. The Rejek family from Stratton St Margaret will be following the custom at their home this year. Explaining the occasion Maria Rejek said: “It’s tradition to decorate the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve as well as eating our Christmas dinner. After the tree is decorated the children watch through the window for the first star to appear, then we can sit down for our special meal of vegetarian dishes and carp. The star signifies the Star of Bethlehem and the beginning of festivities. “We always have an empty chair at the table for any unexpected guest and we set the table with a little bit of straw underneath a white table cloth. The straw signifies the Bethlehem manger. It is also Polish custom to exchange ‘Oplatek’ at the table. They are wafers similar to that given at communion imprinted with Christmas scenes. “After dinner we sing polish koledy (carols) under the tree. We have to sing all the carols before the children are allowed to open their presents, so they get quicker towards the end. We go to Christmas Mass at midnight at the Polish Community Centre Church and afterwards we eat and drink until the early hours.” In Swindon we also have a large
Culture club Japanese community because of the presence of Honda. Christmas in Japan doesn’t have the same religious meaning and tends to be treated more like a Valentines Day in the west. The new year is more significant, with 1 January being a time to celebrate. The Japanese eat a special selection of dishes during New Year called osechi-ryori. This consists of boiled seaweed, fish cakes, mashed sweet potato with chestnut, simmererd burdock root, and sweetened black soybeans. Many of the members of Swindon’s Sikh community will be taking advantage of the holiday season to celebrate overnight events such as Ransabai Kirtan. Scriptures are sung from night to morning and there is a 48-hour reading called Akhand-Paath from Guru Granth Sahib Ji. Swindon Sikh Pom Sandhu said: “All of my children have taken part in nativity plays at school. It seems very natural and healthy to integrate with the community and the kids like to feel a part of what’s going on. We do have a Christmas tree and a vegetarian Christmas dinner.” For some British families the Winter Solstice on 21 December is a key part of the festive season. Swindon playwright Matt Fox said: “We have pie night, including game pie, pumpkin pie and a fake pie stuffed with sweets and gifts. It’s our own tradition but it harks

Threshold’s annual fundraiser to help those without a roof over their head Winter is set to take hold and once again Threshold Housing Link needs the help of people in Swindon. Volunteers are being asked to join the annual sponsored SLEEPOUT! taking place on the night of Friday 5 December at Immanuel United Reform Church, Upham Road. Anyone can take part - individuals, groups or families. This year Threshold are asking local churches, community groups, schools, colleges and businesses to nominate at least one person to participate and represent their organisation and show solidarity with the homeless. Santa Claus is coming to town Father Christmas will be putting in an appearance at the Swindon Arts Centre when the production of Dear Santa enjoys a festive run. Dear Santa is the charming tale of how Santa and his Elf try to find the perfect present for a little girl who has written to him. With plenty of audience participation, festive music and even a personal meeting with Santa for every child, this promises to be a treat for every young family. Santa will be joined by Gary Jerry

Roves’ grotto with a difference For a completely different Santa’s grotto experience this Christmas, take your toddler along to Roves Farm, where Father Christmas and his cheeky elves are hosting party games for children, in their special grotto. On selected weekdays during term time in December there will be stories, colouring, gifts and fun activities during a 45 minute Santa party. While you’re at the farm you can also visit Mary and Joseph with the donkeys in the Bethlehem stable, pat the pets in Pets’ Corner
and make some glittery Christmas crafts. On 6, 7, 13 and 14 December, then every day between 19 to 23 December children can dress up in period clothing and join the animals in the traditional nativity plays. The Swindon Santa Fun Run around Lydiard Park in aid of the Wiltshire Air Ambulance and Swindon Down Syndrome Group takes place on 7 December. Organised by Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix , there is a 5km route plus a 3km trek for children and pushchairs Adult entry (16yrs+) is ÂŁ15, includeing full Santa suit. Child entry (5 to 15 years) is ÂŁ5, free for under 5s. Child and infant entries includes a Santa hat. Dogs on a lead are welcome and get reindeer antlers. Everyone gets a Santa medal and goodie bag. Tennis ace back in town as guest speaker Wanborough’s globetrotting wheelchair tennis star Louise Hunt was the guest speaker at Swindon charity Dressability’s AGM recently. The Edison Park based charity adapts clothes for people with disabilities, having grown from a six-month pilot scheme launched in 1998 to now working with individuals and organisations from across the region. Hunt knows the difficulties disabled people can face when it comes to clothing, having been born with Spina Bifida, and despite knowing little about the charity before the event the Paralympian was proud to have been able to work with them. “Dressability really are amazing, such a worthwhile charity,” she said. “I’ve always relied on my nan to adapt clothing for me and until now I’ve not appreciated how much work is needed to take garments apart and put them back together again. “Any disabled person wants to look good in what they’re wearing and athletes with their variety of disabilities have individual requirements so that they can have comfortable kit which allows them to compete at the highest level.” Hunt spends 25 weeks of her year competing at tournaments around the world, training six days a week as she bids to compete in her second Paralympics in Rio in 2016. Her search for sponsorship to
Louise Hunt support her involvement in her sport is continuous, given she has major expenses in equipment, buying and maintaining wheelchairs, trainers and travel costs. Her annual budget is £50,000, half of which comes from the Tennis Foundation, but she has to find the rest herself. Pinson brothers are mini marvels A pair of brothers from Lydiard Millicent have both enjoyed impressive seasons competing amongst some of the best young Minimoto racers in the country. Oscar Pinson, aged nine, took victory in the British Championship Junior 4.2 Novice/Intermediate class while his brother Elliot, 11, made great strides in the Junior 4.2 Pro and Junior Production Class as he won two races on his way to second in the standings. Both young racers are already looking forward to 2015 and are looking for sponsors to help them progress in the sport. Oscar said: “It was a great first season because I enjoyed the battles I had with my rival Osian Jones. I also enjoyed racing and

and I believe what we’ve come up with is good for the sport going forward,” he told Link Sport. “We know we have issues which needed addressing and we feel as if we’ve done that, it’s been a good weekend and we have some solid plans going forward. “We’re doing next year’s AGM in the first week of October and that’s one of the best things I think. That can help us and the riders plan. “The points limit going up to 34 is good I think, it’s an improvement on last year so it will give some flexibility when it comes to riders. We have riders on higher and lower averages from last season due to the changed race format so that should be some help there. “The race format is going to be tweaked so that the away number four comes out before heat five which is good, and the fast track is going to be beefed up a little which was needed. It’s been a positive step forward and we think things are in place for the better so things can improve what we offer.” The Robins are now in the process of signing their riders for the new season with Nick Morris almost certain to return for a fourth year and Troy Batchelor expected to join him.

Wildcats hitting the jackpot with latest foreign policy Nell believes current batch of Link Centre imports are the “best ever” Swindon Wildcats have certainly had a mixed bag when it comes to imports, but Aaron Nell believes the current crop are the best group the club has ever had. Each EPL team is allowed to ice four non-British players in any one game, with Cats opting to retain five on their roster, but the Link Centre side have found out the hard way just how hit and miss they can be. Sometimes the imports struggle to get to grips with the British way of playing the game, while adapting to this country’s lifestyle can also be a problem, but forward Nell believes the club can feel lucky to have Jonas Hoog, Henri Sandvik, Kenton Smith, Tomasz Malasinski and Jan Kostal at their disposal right now. “What I’ve noticed over the last six or seven years here is that the standard of imports is getting better all the time, and right now the group we have at Swindon is the best we’ve ever had,” he said. “There’s certainly been some interesting characters. When I first started the imports were Slovakian and Czech and didn’t really seem that happy to be here. It was weird, like it was a chore they were here and they were being forced to play. “Now it’s really different because Jan Kostal’s Czech and he’s the nicest, most dedicated guy you could every wish to play with. It all depends I suppose. “We joke with imports that it’s a coin flip and to be fair it really is. “It all depends if they suit the style of the league or if they fit in and

England hockey call for Shona Talented young sportswoman Shona O’Dwyer has been selected for the England Hockey National Age Groups Academy (NAGS) as she continues to make quick progress in the sport. O’Dwyer, who has also represented Team Bath Futures at Netball, will now receive fortnightly training from the NAGS Academy and will attend five training camps at the Lilleshall National Sports Centre, with the goal of competing in the National School Games in Manchester. Although she has now left Lydiard Park Academy to attend the sixth form at Dauntseys School in West Lavington, O’Dwyer’s father Mark was quick to praise his daughter’s former teachers, Gail Davies and Anna Carriero, for helping her get so far in both her sports. “They provided fantastic guidance and encouragement during her time at the school,” he Rossiter said. “Playing bothAlun sports meant Shona had to manage her time extremely well and both teachers made sure she received the right kind of support which ensured she left with 14 A or A* GCSEs.”
