Royal reception for 10 years of marathon walking A stalwart fundraiserfor Breakthrough Breast Cancer has been invited to meet Prince Charles at a reception in Clarence House, London to say thanks to all the women across Britain who raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer. Legion bikers backed by Arval The contemporary pro-active face of the Royal British Legion roared into Windmill Business Park on 9 November to meet staff of the Arval employee charity and accept a cheque for ÂŁ1,046 on behalf of the Legion's Poppy Appeal.

Fifteen bikers from the legion's Riders Branch made the trip in advance of riding to London for a Rememberance Day service at the Ace Cafe, the famous bikers gathering place in North London. Arval charity committee chairman Paul Marchment said the Poppy Appeal was selected as the staff charity for October. "Seeing the bikers gave the appeal a different meaning for many of us. Mostpeople have a picture of veterans from the two World Wars, but seeing
the guys in their leathers and riding big bikes made us think about the young people now serving in the military and the work of the legion in helping servicemen." The moneywas collected through dress down days, wearing England rugby shirts during the World Cup and cake sales. The Riders Branch was formed in 2004 and now has over 750 members. African flower provides wise inspiration for school logo Three owls have been chosen for the new logo for Haydon Wick Primary School thanks to an idea from nine year old Annie Pinchen. New head teacher Simon Cowley asked the childrentoupdatetheoldlogoofschoolbuild ings to reflect the school's mission statement 'working together, playing together.' Annie said her idea came from her mother's 1980s school uniform. "My mum went to school in Zimbabwe and I've always liked the picture on the cloak which she wore. She told me it was an African flame lily but the flower seemed to be flying. I thought they looked like owls. They are very clever - like all the children at our school.

The November Link highlighted Swindon Council's proposal to stop providing free school buses to schools outside West Swindon in order to save money and fill 500 surplus places at Greendown predicted for 2012. Greendown School headteacher Clive Zimmerman comments on the issues being considered in a consultati on which ended on 23 November.

The consequences of this decision for Greendown and West Swindon are significant: • securing higher pupil numbers will allow Greendown to continue its journey from being a good school to becoming an excellent one. The lower level of funding resulting from a falling roll would be a significant barrier to this; • the savings to ratepayers are large. The total savings from the proposed transport changes are in the region of £500,000 each year. That's nearly enough to buy a complete set of new textbooks for every secondary aged child in Swindon. Greendown will have sufficient capacity to accommodate the extra numbers. We pride ourselves on being a community comprehensive in the modern sense—taking all pupils from an area and doing our best with each and every one of them. There are also clear environmental and congestion benefits to not unnecessarily using school buses. • Swindon Council's cabinet will consider a report in the new year. If it cuts free transport, the first intake affected will be in September 2009.

Pupils invited to 80th birthday party for Tanwood trouper Generations of children have learned to dance under the careful eye of MollieTanner and all are invited to the grandTanwood reunion to celebrate her 80th birthday at The Apartment on Sunday 23 December. "Thousands of pupils have come under Mollie's spell over the years she has been teaching and thousands more families have enjoyed the shows," said daughter Pollyann. The party will take place at the end of a month of celebrations for Tanwood. In November, the school returned to the Wyvern stage with their show Dancing Through Life and on 16 December, Tanwood's patron, Bonnie Langford, hosts a special show at Her Majesty's Theatre, London. Mollie, who still teaches at Tanwood and also privately, started performing aged 16 in 1944. She joined an entertainment group which visited injured soldiers at hospitals in and around the town, working in the

The annual display is specially designed and created by floristry students at Wiltshire College, Lackham and gives an insight into how the Victorians celebrated Christmas. After personal tragedy, Janet Walters from Grange Park decided that the show must go on and, as part of a new beginning for her, she joined the Old Town Theatre Company to work backstage on their forthcoming production of Hamlet. Youngsters at Orchid Vale Primary School have been enjoying maths and been rewarded with football coaching, thanks to Arsenal FC. A programme called Double Club, to help children meet their maths goals, has been developed by Arsenal and delivered through an after school club in association with Wayne Hatswell's Players Soccer School. Children in Years 4 to 6 spend 45 minutes working on challenges like buying their dream team with a fixed budget or calculating how many studs are on a whole team's boots. After exercising their brains, they head for the football pitch for 45 minutes of training with Wayne and former STFC player Adi Viveash. Brook Field kids go for bling Pupils at Brook Field Primary School decorated their bikes in November to show their commitment to recycling as part of the school's involvement with the Bike It project. The scheme, run by sustainable transport charity Sustrans in 12 Swindon schools, encourages par-

Bus brings sunshine to Brimble Hill Children at Brimble Hill Special School turned out to take delivery of a new 17- seater bus in late October. Although emblazoned with the Variety Club of Great Britain logo, the money to pay for the vehicle came from generous donations from people andbusinesses i n the Swindon area, including Paul Cripps, owner of the Nightingale Hotel in South Marston who launched a fundraising drive over a year ago. Families to get creative and youth will find a voice Flux, the North Swindon arts project, is launching a raft of new projects in December and January. Family workshops at Abbey Meads Primary School in early December will focus on storytelling and making shadow-puppets with artist Martin Maudsley. In January Flux will run drama sessions with children aged 2 to 4 years with tutor Fiona Da Silva-Adams of Drama Babes to encourage youngsters to express themselves in song and dance, using finger puppets and storytelling. January will also see the launchof the Flux Swindon Youth Choir for young people aged 11 and over. A sponsored walk organised by Denise Jones, owner of the Hair of the Dog salon, raised £215 fora charity which rescues bears in China. Twenty four dogs and 28 walkers took part in the walk from West Swindon to Mouldon Hill Park and back at the end of October. — r
Denise decided to take action after reading in The Link about Sarah and Dave Chilvers who recently walked the Great Wall of China in aid of Animals Asia Foundation. The foundation runs a sanctuary in China for bears that
have been milked for their bile which is used in traditional Chinese medicines. Sarah Chilvers, who visited the sanctuary in September, joined the walkers and gave out DVDs explaining the plight of the animals. "It was a brilliant day; it was great to tell more people about the work of Animals Asia," said Sarah. Denise said that although a lot of people have heard about the bears, they don't really know the details and the extent of the bears' suffering as their bile is extracted. "There is no need for it now; there are alternatives that can be used in medicine. The bears are so trusting but to be caged like that for 25 years is just horrific."

Charities, schools and other community groups can take advantage of a cool fundraising idea by teaming up with Swindon nPower Wildcats ice hockey team. Participating groups are allocated one of the Wildcats' games and can then sell tickets to friends and colleagues. All money taken for children's tickets is returned to the fundraising group. Prices are discounted to £3 for adults and £1.50 for children compared to the full prices of £9.50 and £5.30. As an extra bonus each ticket comes with a voucher to see a second game at half the usual price. The initiative is co-ordinated by Kidzone which promotes Wildcats within the community. They can also arrange for team mascot Willie Wildcat and a player or two to put in an appearance at schools or other venues to raise awareness of a fundraising match. Kidzone will take all bookings for tickets which are collected on the day, which means that fundraisers do not need to handle money from sales. They wed in 1940 just before Ron left for Egypt with the Kings Royal Rifles, and didn't see each other again for 5 years. Taken prisoner by the Germans, in the desert Ron spent three years in a camp in Italy. When the Italians surrendered in 1944, he and fellow POWs were transported to the Black Forest for another 15 months behind barbed wire. Vera contributed to the war effort by working in factories. After the war, Ron became a postman and Vera worked as a machinist.

by bulldozers or damaged by the weather." The group had a scary moment in the early hours, said Roz Fleming. "Somebody started banging on the roof at about 3am. We all stayed really quiet until we heard our youth leader talking to them. They thought an immigrant camp was being set up." Youth worker Dave Davidson believes the group of young people will grow up with a real understanding of what goes on in the world and will guide them to do something about it. Money raised from the Slum Survivor project is being shared between Swindon Food Bank, the Filling Station and Soul Survivor.
