A proposal by Swindon Council to build on the empty former community centre site at Shaw Village Centre will be considered by the Shaw Residents' Association at their monthly meeting on Monday 6 December, 8.30pm. Now that a village hall has been built by the Ridge Green Medical Practice, the council wants to sell off the land between the pub and the church to a commercial developer. However the idea has attracted opposition from residents of adjacent George Tweed Gardens sheltered dwelling because the large open space could now be built on. All Shaw residents are invited to view the plans and discuss the proposal at the meeting in the village hall next to the medical centre.

Wider use for Groundwell farmhouse

Pub plan decision still awaited

The October Link reported that planning permission for a dental practice in the presently derelict 18th Century Groundwell Farmhouse close to Cricklade Road and Thamesdown Drive. A revised application was submitted to permit a wider range of medical uses. This has been approved subject to the applicant, dentist Patrick Holmes, entering into required legal agreements. The conversion is expected to cost in the region of £1 million, and in order to fund this, surrounding land will be used to provide 16 residential apartments. Some neighbouring residents expressed concerns about the traffic and parking which the new use will generate.

Haydon Wick Parish Council has supported the residents of Thames Avenue who have expressed concern over proposals by The Shield and Dagger pub to seek an entertainment licence and planning permission for a garden seating area. The October Link reported fears by people living closeby that the noise problems experienced when seats were previously sited in front of the pub would start again. Swindon Council's licensing and planning committees have yet to make decisions on these requests, though there is some doubt as to whether planning permission is actually required.

Building company Bluestone will complete construction in early December to allow classrooms to be prepared before the winter holiday, so that children can start in the new premises on the first day back in January. Health and safety advisor Colin Cameron talked to the children about the dangers associated with building sites, using safety equipment, such as goggles, hard hats and hi-visibility jackets to illustrate his points, and some of the youngsters as models. He emphasised the importance of staying clear of building works

at all times, especially during the Christmas holidays when sites are left unattended. "I wanted to get the message across that construction sites are not playgrounds," he said.

To mark the imminent handover, the children were presented with prizes for paintings they had made showing the features they would like to see in their new school. Twenty winners received special Bluestone Schools Packs containing goodies such as a torch, pen, bookmark and an HSE safety booklet featuring games and cartoons.

Children from Acorns Hol N Trinity Playgroup helped raise money for new equipment by taking part in a sponsored obstacle course around the church hall on 9 November. The group is trying to reequip with toys and arts accessories and would welcome donations and help with other fundraising events. Scanner star Lewis arrives After all the attention Lewis Underdown had before he was born, he took his own time to make an appearance in the big wide world. Proud parents Lee and Emma were pictured in the November Link, with an amazingly sharp 3D scan of Lewis in the womb. Having followed his progress from a picture of him as a fertilised egg at the IVF stage, they were very keen to meet him. But their baby was quite happy where he was and after a ten day wait Emma had to be induced. This restoration work is planned to start in September 2005. if final funding is approved by the Heritage Lottery Fund. The timing of the restoration work is being planned to best protect wildlife by encouraging and enabling species to relocate in late summer before the works begin. Works are due for completion by September 2006. Coun Nick Martin, right. Chair of the Lydiard Park Project Board, beli eves the restoration will benefit the people of the town and its image. "It's certainly very exciting to see Lydiard Park restored to its former Georgian glory. This is the romantic English landscape of the novels of Jane and Georgette Heyer and will, once again, provide a fitting setting

for the house and church. "This restoration will improve the natural environment, encouraging wildlife to flourish and increasing Swindon people's enjoyment of this park. "It's important to recognise that funding for the restoration is a partnership between the lottery, a number of agencies and business, for which we are very grateful." The Lydiard Park Project is supported by a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund and Swindon Borough Council's partners in the scheme are English Heritage. the Countryside Agency and business partner, RWE npower.

from our usual arrival at school in West Swindon. This is no dream either. It is the reality of a lot of planning, communicating and waiting after my first visit to Moriting eight months ago. We have worked together planning lessons; written poetry; understood contour lines using our hands; made a video with eloquent and ambitious young members of the school council; lunched together, attended some curriculum development inservice teacher training together; sung, wept and laughed together. We have grown together. Mr Motaung L.S. insisted it was no disruption to his Friday afternoon when he remained at the school long after everyone else had gone home, whilst four of us struggled with the idiosyncrasies of a broken down van and a computer hard-drive from hell, which kept rejecting its connection to the internet. His life's ambition, which sounded so straightforward to us, was really a dream for him: "I would like to make contact with the USA." His dream seemed as distant as ever when we hadn't managed to get the modem to connect. The next day we drove in two vehicles to a computer shop in Bethlehem, 60kms away, to buy an external modem. Whilst Steve and I awaited a mechanic to fix the sick van, Angela and Anna returned so that computer 'wizard' Chris Tuttiett could finally help Moriting make the connection. It is this difference in access to things that we so easily take for granted at the flick of a switch or the press of a button, that made us all realise what a tremendous value our schools' partnership could be. As teachers in the UK we often hear the whines of our pupils bleating, 'it's not fair ...; why can't I have ...; we never get the chance to ..; why don't we ever ....' It would be so good to hear these same British pupils say,'it's amazing that we can ...; because we have this we can ...; we could use this to ...; why not. How enriching this would be for British pupils to extend their citizenship beyond the familiar confines of their own neighbourhoods and national boundaries. Through the strength of our schools' partnership I know that with time, energy, enthusiasm, innovation, and commitment and belief in the partnership, this will be possbile.
