Dream Christmas present for Candy A teenager has been reunited with her mother after six years, following an appeal to Link magazine readers. Candy Sheppard, 14, from Shaw, made her appeal exclusively on our October front page. She had been told her mother Margaret had died of cancer after she left the family home in Freshbrook, but there was no record of her death. Candy's heart rending story in The Link was taken up and publicised in the Swindon Evening Advertiser and other newspapers.

On 10 November Candy's dream came true when, out of the blue she came face to face with Margaret at Swindon Social Services offices. "It was a complete surprise. My social worker told me to ask him any question. I wanted to know where my mum was, and there she was, in the next room. We were both amazed to see each other. It was the happiest day of my life; the best Christmas present ever." Candy spent three hours in the town centre with her mum sharing the lives they had missed together over the last six years. Margaret had been shown the story in a Gloucester based newspaper and had contacted social services. Candy will continue to live with her foster mother in Swindon but her dream coming true has created some turmoil for her. "It was weird

Volunteers turned out in force on Friday 17 November to help Dr Peter Swinyard move into his new surgery at 36 Deerhurst Way. By the following Monday, walls had been decorated, carpet laid, shelves put up and furniture moved, ready for the first consultation. Dr Swinyard said one 75 year old patient even rose from his sick bed to join in. 'There has been an amazing amount of goodwill. I would like to thank all who helped or has wished us well.' However BT took the whole day to connect the phones, despite several weeks notice. Some of Dr Swinyard's 2,000 registered patients joined him for an opening party at the surgery on Saturday 25 November.

As in previous in years, hardly anybody turned up to the annual general meeting in May, but a few more people were rounded up to make a quorum to form a management committee a few weeks later. Then the collapse of the licensed bar trading company in August reduced interest in the centre from drinkers and removed the major source of income. The centre management committee had a choice of handing the keys back to Thamesdown Council or getting organised said treasurer Ray Bunce. "We could not just close down. Toothill needs a community centre. It's been really hard work for the whole committee, but we're clawing our way back and I think we've turned the corner. The council gave us a small grant to keep the doors open and we now have a 50% increase in bookings and lots more people are using the building." He added that although income was being generated by the new users, a new licensed bar is being

planned to cover centre running costs. However it will be run to meet the needs of all users and not just those who frequent the bar. "People in Toothill are rediscovering their community centre," said Ray. "There's a very positive atmosphere and I'm glad to see a new youth session starting up again. They'll be the people running this building in ten years time." • Toothill Community Centre can still organise a licensed bar for private functions. Residents' inspect progress Grange Park residents living close to Windmill Hill business park have given their approval to building works going on at Galileo. The multi-national travel booking company is converting its data centre building into a new headquarters for its 640 staff by installing new windows and entrances. A group of residents were given a

tour of the site in early November by Galileo facilities manager John O'Keefe. Eileen Sawyer said that a strong and positive working relationship continues between the residents' group and Galileo. "Householders living opposite the data centre can be reassured that their privacy is not being intruded upon. There will be some weekends when construction has to take place, but these should be few." She added that nearly all the fifty trees planted last spring to mask the data centre are growing well and are closely monitored by Galileo contractors. Westlea Wanderers Football Club was formed in 1994 and provides fun through football for children under the age of ten. The club has approximately 50 members and is divided into squads at under 8, under 9 and under 10 level. The younger age groups play friendlies and the under lOs compete in Vale District Boys League. The standard of football is high and our long-awaited first victory came on 6 November, 2-1 against Wroughton. This was closely followed by a 6-0 victory against Watchfield Eagles. We rely on the time and generosity of parents to ensure that the club runs smoothly and there is an

active fund-raising committee which works hard to ensure that members and parents have an enjoyable time when we part with our hard-earned money. Kit and equipment purchase has been aided by sponsorship from Askey Consultants and Tracc Builders. We are searching for our own pitch. I would be interested to hear of any readers with a suitable plot of land that they would be willing to let the club use. I can be contacted on 872158. Council backs down to residents tree planting objections Ramleaze residents have won a battle to be consulted about a secret Thamesdown Council scheme to cover the largest public open space in the area with trees. The residents of Wenslydale Close discovered the plan to plant 1,500 trees covering nearly 2 acres close to their homes when workmen started to spray grass with weedkiller. They objected to the loss of playspace used by their children and are worried about the securityof their homes. Graham Pitts-Drake said there are serious security implications by the plan. "The plans show tree

planting right up to our garden gates which is going to create a hazard for us. The main footpath will run up a corridor of trees and there have been several incidents of men exposing themselves nearby." Janet Woodman criticised the council for spraying the grass without telling householders in advance. "The open space is a favourite meeting place for children. They were playing there after the workmen had gone. Why didn't the council tell us? The excuse given was that there was no evidence of children playing; there were no worn out football goal areas."

Eight year old John Edwards said local children regularly organise inter-street football games on the open space. "We play there all through the year. If they plant trees we won't be able to play football, cricket, rounders, or just run around." Gill Edwards said, "Why is Thamesdown doing this? Residents have lived here for nearly 15 years, but the officers have not seen fit to consult us about changing the use of the only safe open play place in the area." Local councillor Maurice Fanning said, "the original plans always showed tree planting being used to mask the housing, but that is no reason for not consulting people who have moved into the area since the plans were drawn up. The consultation has been poor; we need to do better." Children in the first three years at Brook Field School enjoyed an end of topic party on 2 November and were joined by the very person they they had been studying - The Jolly Postman.

The surprise visitor stepped right out of Janet and Allan Ahlberg's book which the youngsters aged 4 to 6 years had been working on since September. Teacher Sara Coulter said the

book offered many teaching opportunities. "We have covered science, maths, geography and technology skills. Children wrote letters to Goldilocks, cooked cakes, created bar charts and looked at the places the Jolly Postman visits." The children put on a fashion show and were able to ask the Jolly Postman questions before they tucked into sandwiches and cakes to celebrate their hard work.

New baby sitting service aimed at Abbey Mead families Two sixteen year olds have set up a baby sitting service exclusively for families living in the new estates at Abbey Meads. Rebecca Croker who lives in the area and Rebekka Collins from Westlea, pictured below, both of

whom attend Greendown School, have set up 'Cherubs' to give parents a break from their babes. They have delivered leaflets to people living in Abbey Meads which they believe will provide them with lots of work. "It's a new area with people moving in from all over the place; they might not know anybody to babysit for them," said Rebecca. Rebekka said they both had lots of baby sitting experience and would be able to help parents who want to go out together. The girls will visit new clients with a parent before they make a commitment to babysit. They charge £2.50 per hour before midnight and £3.50 after, and are able to babysit during the week after 6pm and at anytime during the weekend. High standard from Ju-Jitsu club Six members of the Swindon Ju-Jitsu Club which meets at Greendown School fought their way to medal success at the Jikishin international championships held at Harlow, Essex. Brett Taylor and Mark Young took gold medals in the pairs demonstration. Mark also gained gold in the sparring competition with Gail Curtis. Instructors Steve Cole and Baj Bharj took the silver medal in the international pairs demonstrations. Other club members John Szynalski, Kirsty Hull and Matthew Curtis also took part in the competiton and performed well. Instructor Baj Bharj said he and fellow instructor Steve Cole were delighted with the results. "To

achieve four gold medals is an excellent performance. Sensei Terry Parker, the 7th Dan founder of Jikishin Ju-Jitsu Association commented on the very high standard of competitiors from the club." Baj said Ju-Jitsu is the art of throwing, locking, striking and holding and is by far the most effective street defence system. Shoppers in Swindon town centre during July and August will have been surprised and amused by the antics of open air entertainers, singers and comedians performing in Swindon's first street festival. Stiltwalking crows, samba bands and local talent were just some of the crazy goings-on. Now the organisers want to know what people think about turning the streets into a public stage for the arts. Thamesdown Council Public Arts Officer Lorraine Cox is talking to shop keepers about future arts events and would like to hear from the residents as well. Rev. Craig Bowman of Emmanuel United Reformed Church, Haydon Wick reflects on the meaning of Christmas Christmas is the time of year when people reveal what's important to them. For some it is the time when they make an effort to get together with their family and meet up with the friends they haven't seen for a while. For others their priorities are seen in the way they eat and drink far more than they could ever need. At this time of year many people show that God does have some place in their lives and take time to share in the worship of the church. For me it is an odd time of year. Everyone expects me to be remarkably busy throughout the month of December and to a certain extent that is true. I get requests from all sorts of places to lead carol services and write articles for magazines. However, most of these services are held in the first few weeks of the month and then there is a little bit of a lull before the celebrations of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.

I am glad of that slightly quieter time because it gives me the opportunity to reflect on what Christmas means to me, and what my priorities are in this rushing, speeding world. You see I believe the greatest thing about Christmas is not the carols, or the turkey, or the presents, or even the candlelight and bells. The greatest thing for me is that at this time of year we see God's priorities, and see what is important to him - and that is us! In the midst of all the sentiment and tradition is the wonderful fact that here God comes to live with us and share our lives. That commitment to us has its supreme moment at Easter, but it is here that God comes to us , and gives to us. At the beginning I didn't mention those for whom giving is important at Christmas, whether it be presents, love or time. These are the ones who follow the example of God, and that should surely be a priority for all of us at this time of year and always.

Toothill Church welcomes the children Toothill Church has a number of activities for children and young people writesAnn Hall Girls' Brigade, for 5 to 18 year olds, Toothill Church, Wednesdays, 6pm - 8pm The girls work for badges and activities include Bible stories, learning about the church, games, dancing, walking, music, singing, poetry and community service. Boys' Brigade, for boys aged 5 to 16, Toothill Church, Fridays, 6pm to 9pm. The boys work for badges and activities include visits to places of interest, sports, arts and crafts and community services. Sunday School, for children 3 to 11 years old, Sundays, 1030am to 12 noon. There are four classes for different age groups. The children come into church for the beginning of the service and then go to the Community Centre for their classes. Activities include Bible stories, games, drama, singing, quizzes, drawing, colouring and craft work. The aim for the younger children is to help them to understand that Jesus loves them and for the older children

that they belong to the church and have something worthwhile to give to it. Channel 4 (Channel For Jesus) is for young people at Secondary School, Sundays 10.30 to 12 noon Activities include discussion, drama, quizzes etc. We are hoping to start a Youth Club for the young people of the church aged 11 and over in January. Once a month there is a Parade Service for all these organisations in the church at 1045am. This service is particularly suitable for young people but adults enjoy it as well. We are very pleased that some of the local Scouts, Cubs and Beavers join us for this service. First Steps is a group for preschool children, their parents and carers, which meets on Mondays from 1030am to 12 noon at the church. Activities include Biblerelated stories, songs, drawing and painting. New members will be welcome at all these groups. For further information please contact the Minister, the Revd. Pastor joins Freshbrook team Freshbrook Church will end a two year search for a new pastor when Rev. David Earnshaw is inducted on 2 December. Hailing from Blackburn, Lancs., David, 35, has been a pastor in Swansea for the last ten years. "Coming to Freshbrook is a spiritual move," said David. "I felt the Lord leading me here and a call from the local church members." David will be a full time bible teacher and pastor, working alongside the present leadership of four church elders. His wife Jane, a teacher, will be joining David in Freshbrook.

Fireworks help counsellors

Ride to Rwanda

Schools Outreach, which provides pastoral support care workers in two Swindon schools, benefitted by £600 from a bonfire night and fireworks event at St Mary's Church, Lydiard Park on 3 November. Vicar of St Mary's Rev. Rob Buries said the event organised by volunteers on behalf of all West Swindon's churches had gone extremely well and he was very pleased with the support for Schools Outreach.

Phil Rashid from Westlea is organising an excercise bike ride to Rwanda at the Link Centre between 25 and 30 March. He wants individuals and teams of people to raise sponsorship for sections of the 5,800 mile ride. All the money raised will go to nine charities working with refugees. Flying winger makes pact with the Lord An ex-England rugby player vicar admits to disobeying God's word. But better late than never, he was ordained at the age of 48 as vicar of All Saints, Lydiard Millicent on 24 October. Peter Knight, right, says he felt the call to the ministry at a young age, but the pull was not strong enough. Instead, as a promising sportsman he joined Bristol rugby club, then progressed into the powerful Gloucestershire teams of the 1960s. His career took him towards teaching through a PE degree at St Luke's, Exeter which led onto teaching posts in Dorset, Bristol and eventually in Brussels. His rugby prowess caught the eye of England selectors who picked him to play wing and full back between 1969 and 1972, including tours to South Africa, New Zealand and Fiji. "1 actually felt the call to work for God at the age of 12, so I suppose I disobeyed him," says Peter. "Yet I'm very glad I played when I did as an amateur. Even then I was training five or six nights a week. At the time I knew there was more to life than sport and by 19901 had to come to respond to His call." After two years training followed by a three year curacy in Bristol, he applied to the vacancy at All Saints. "1 was attracted by the ecumenical relationship between all the churches in West

Two jobs that we are working on at present are clearance of the small islands in the upper lake together with rebuilding and replacing the duck nesting boxes on them and creating a new display for the Ranger Centre. A sudden snowfall in February was a surprise accompaniment to the start of renovations at Lydiard Park this year. Quickly disappearing behind a forest of scaffold the house remained hidden throughout our 'busy' season, visitors gamely negotiating a tunnel entrance. It was not without a sigh of relief that museum staff watched the final dismantling of that tunnel and the long view across the park restored. The house has reemerged in the winter sunshine the same familiar Lydiard landmark, but in considerably better shape than before. Having spent the best part of nine months helping to develop a new computer system for the force it was nice to return to operational duties in Swindon. I have spent the last month trying to re-new old contacts and re-form the team of officers on the beat in West Swindon, which was outlined in October's Link magazine by Inspector Andy Tatam. With the tragic case of the death of Leah Betts, the Essex teenager who collapsed having swallowed an ecstasy tablet at her 18th birthday party, still fresh in our minds, it is a good time to mention drugs. Leah's case shows that even caring, concerned and close families can be touched by the nightmare of drugs. We can never be sure that our children are not at risk

when they are not with us. They cannot be wrapped in cotton wool so the best advice that we can give comes from the national advertising campaign of some time ago: 'If you don't talk to your children about drugs, someone else will'. Swindon is no different to any other town. The problem exists. If you are concerned about changes in your child and suspect drugs maybe involved, I would be happy to listen and advise. Pete Cejer, who lives in Jewel Close, recently donated bone marrow to the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, after a tissue match was made with a cancer patient in France. "Many people already give blood to the NHS, yet the number of people who have registered to offer bone marrow is small. The Anthony Nolan Trust is entirely voluntary and does not receive any government backing. In ten years, it has attracted 200,000 people to its register of potential donors. By comparison, a German government initiative has 500,000 in just two years." Donors initially give blood samples for tissue typing and, if suitable, are kept on the register for ten years. A number of cancer related diseases can be treated using donated bone marrow but the chances of suitable tissue match are quite small. Pete first gave blood at his Nationwide Building Society workplace five years ago. Some donors may never be called, yet by having more people registered, the chances of a making suitable matches are increased. "It's a pretty amazing thing to do. There are very few occasions where

you can give something directly to help another in poor physical condition," said Pete. "The discomfort is nothing compared with the hope you can give others. More people should come forward. "Men are desperately needed. Women make an important contribution but apparently male donors are 'clinically preferred;' yet only 30% on the register are men." Local support group planned

Gill Exall, South West representative of the Anthony Nolan Bone Marrow Trust, said it was the world's largest independent register and is entirely dependent on voluntary support. "The National Lottery has had a dramatic effect on fundraising; it has gone downwards. We would like to start a 'Friends' group in Swindon to raise awareness and organise fundraising events." She said tissue typing costs ÂŁ50 per donor and money is also needed to cover hospital stays when donor harvests take place and organisation running costs. New primary school in west needed now

Swindon takes over responsibility for education from Wiltshire County Council in 1997 but the governors and headteacher of Brook Field School are concerned that the school should not grow to unacceptably large numbers before a decision is made to build another school in the area. A site for a school at Roughmoor is reserved, next to the village centre site, but Wiltshire County Council removed the scheme from its capital building programme earlier this year.

"We are very concerned by the lack of movement by the Wiltshire local education authority and are worried that our problems are going to be caught up in the transition to the new Swindon authority. "It is most important that the children's education must not suffer because of confusion as the councils change over." Chairman of Brook Field School governors John Lye said he has written to all Members of Wiltshire LEA calling upon them to ensure that Wiltshire at least completes the planning for a new primary school at Roughmoor before Swindon takes over and that the project is included in the capital building programme. Leader of Thamesdon Council Sue Bates has been invited to discuss the issue. A letter has been sent to all Brook Field parents explaining the situation and asking them to support the building of another school. A meeting of parents will be called early in the new year. In the mid-1980s, Freshbrook School became one of the largest primary schools in Britain when its numbers topped 850.

Brook Field has its optimum number of children at present: 430. The latest figures project pupil numbers rising to 498 next September, 536 at Easter 1997 and 584 in September 1997. Numbers could top 600 by 1999. With another 200 houses to be occupied at Roughmoor, head teacher Roger Nicholas believes the school's core facilities and the quality of education will become stretched if numbers are permitted to grow to unacceptable levels. "We have a very positive relationship with parents at this school; they are very supportive and I can assure them we will do everything we can to ensure that we will meet the children's needs. "Large schools do not mean large classes. The increased income from larger numbers allows us to appoint the teachers we require and indeed gives us extra resources. But our attention may be distracted from our main objective of delivering high quality education because of organisational requirements. The environment of the school starts to suffer, whilst the traffic congestion outside the school gate will grow beyond its present bad state.

Under 5s in Westlea Rev Peter Walker invites parents with pre-school children to join in with a pram service

Westlea Pram Service is a new event for under 5s and their parents starting in January. We will meet on Friday between lOam and 11am in the Sunshine Room at Westlea School, Langstone Way. Children, parents and carers will have the chance to join in with songs, stories and prayers, fol-

Prinells play area needed Toothill councillor Linda Yavuz is pressing colleagues on Thamesdown Councils Leisure Services Committee to switch money set aside for a play area at Roughmoor to a play area at The Prinnells, Shaw. She says housing development at Roughmoor is still slow. By contrast The Prinnells is almost complete and the number of young children in the area has created a need for the council to respond positively with a play area on Shaw Ridge, adjacent to the housing. • A social centre for The Prinnells at 54 Walter Close pictured in the November Link magazine was opened by Mayor of Thamesdown Court. Bert Smith on 17 November. • Construction of a toddlers play area at the Sparcells open space, next to the community centre, starts in early December. Work on an adjacent hard play area has been delayed until councillors consult residents.

Your first Christmas alone after divorce, separation or bereavement If you have been married or in a long term relationship, the ending can be agony, writes Relate counsellor Julia Cole. At Christmas that agony can be made far worse by feelings of isolation and yearning to be as you were in Christmases past. Christmas and agree the details of how and when they will meet. Children find it hard to cope with uncertainty and will enjoy Christmas more if they know what is happening to them. They may also need to be involved in the Christmas arrangements, so ask them what they want to do. Explain that this Christmas will be different. Allow them to tell you how they feel. 4. Try to structure a Christmas Day which is personal to you reverting to old traditions might be too difficult and may bring back unhappy memories. 5. Make sure that you keep your self-esteem high. Look after yourself and give yourself small rewards for coping with another day. You are worth caring about in your own right - especially at Christmas. The relationship counselling organisation Thamesdown Relate sees many people at this time of year who are facing their first Christmas alone, and dreading it. Lonely people can often cope at other times of the year, but at Christmas the comparison between themselves and those who have families can be very hard to handle. Thamesdown Relate suggests the following ideas for those alone or in different circumstances this Christmas. 1. Accept that you are going to feel uncertain, sad and possibly confused at the prospect of Christmas alone. Squashing these emotions may lead to you feeling de-

pressed and uncertain about how to approach others in an honest and open way. 2. Don't think that you have to bottle up your feelings because others won't want sadness at Christmas - share your feelings with someone who is close to you. It could be helpful to accept an invitation to spend Christmas with someone you trust but haven't had a chance to be with before at Christmas. 3. If you are alone with children, try to talk through their worries with them in a way which is suitable to their age and experience. Crucial message: Drive safely this Christmas

The clocks have gone back, the nights are longer and the weather has changed dramatically signally the beginning of winter which brings all the associated dangers and a different sort of workload for your local fire station. Since I last wrote we've responded to 49 false alarms, 17 emergency special service calls and 24 fires. Although the number of calls isn't significantly higher than usual sadly they have been more serious in their consequences. We've been involved in a some very serious domestic fires resulting in severe injuries to occupiers. Tragically there have also been a number of road traffic accidents in which there were fatalities, perhaps most noticeably the recent accident between Highworth and Blunsdon where three young men died, despite the very best efforts of all three emergency services working hard as a team. This type of incident is always difficult to deal with, both professionally and emotionally and I know all our thoughts at this time are with the families of those who died. Please take extra care in the home and on the roads during the winter months. Against the background of recent events it seems difficult to close on a cheerful note, but as we

Tragic loss of local garage owner! We were shocked and saddened to hear of the untimely death of Barry Bull, proprietor of Titcombe Garage at Westmead Estate, Westlea, in a car crash on 8 November. Many readers will have met Barry when taking their car into Titcombes for service or repair. All who knew him will have been impressed by his energy, commitment and his enthusiasm. We at The Link magazine have a particular debt to him as he placed a large number of advertisements with the magazine from 1987 to 1993, when we launched ourselves as a professional publication and he was establishing Titcombe Garage after the move to Westmead in November 1986. He eventually had to stop advertising with us because the business was so well known within West Swindon Our sympathy goes to his family, and his friends and colleagues at Titcombe Garage.

Lollipop person needed urgently Parents, staff and governors at Tregoze School, Grange Park fought hard several years ago to get the Wiltshire County Council to employ a crossing patrol person to escort children across Hay Lane. The post is now vacant and advertisements have not brought forward applicants. The road is busier than ever and somebody is desperately needed to do the job. Parent Terry Handley has launched a petition calling for traffic calming measures on Hay Lane or a pelican crossing. Teacher offers total French

Looking good after school Locally based company Readers Digest have sponsored new uniforms for staff at the Toothill After School Club. The company staff charities committee responded to a request for a grant to buy sweatshirts to be worn by staff. Now they can be easily identified when they collect children at school and on trips. The sweatshirts incorporate the Readers Digest logo.

A Toothill based French teacher has come up with a new way of Showing off their shirts, Brenda Aisbett of Readers Digest left, Jayne teaching a foreign language - a whole day's total immersion. Pascal Watson, who teaches French to children in small groups in her home and in local primary schools, says, "its so important for children to start learning a language early. Children pick up the words, phrases and most important the accent. It gives them confidence and a very good start when they go on to secondary school." Children attend small groups in Pascal's home after-school on Wednesday and Friday during term time. Now she is introducing a whole day of activity during the holidays, all in French. "We learn through games, songs and play during term time," explained Pascal. "The day together allows us to spend five hours speaking French, doing craft activities and rehears-

My children join in and after school club members and it's a fun way of spending a day in a French family environment without going to France." There is no membership fee to join Pascal's French classes and the cost of all learning materials are included in the £2.50 an hour charge. Voulez Vous, The ABBA Experience From Moredon Junior School Choir and the News Club We are writing to let you know how much we in the Moredon Junior School choir enjoyed taking part in the Voulez Vous concert at the Wyvern Theatre on Monday 6 November. This was the first time that many of us had been to the Wyvern and to be actually onstage was brilliant. We had to learn the words of the two songs at school and we only had one rehearsal with the group, just before the concert started. We felt nervous but once we were on stage it was great. All the nerves went away! We were able to watch the second half of the concert and it was a really great evening.
