Mohammed Salas Khan holds his volunteer action award certificate with children who attend his Arabic studies class at Greendown

Mohammed Salas Khan, who lives in Shaw, received a regional winners certificate and a cheque for £1,000 in November in recognition of his volunteer effort with the town's Pakistan Muslim Association. Salas works with Thamesdown Council and local health and social services in the interests of the Muslim community. He is presently vice-chair of the Thamesdown Racial Equality Council which works to achieve equal opportunities for Asian and black people, and to combat racial discrimination. Salas said there were seven Muslim families in the town when he arrived 28 years ago. Now there

For the last seven years he has run a twice weekly after school class in Arabic at Greendown School to help Muslim children learn how to worship correctly. "English is their first language and their Asian language is used at home," said Salas. "It is a principle of our religion that every child learns to pray in Arabic and understands the Quran." Salas also teaches Urdu classes in the town centre. School places confusion (continued from front page) With the closing date of 31 December for returning application forms drawing near, some parents received a letter from Christine Gale, Chair of Ridgeway School Governors, dated 17 November saying that next September's intake will in fact be 240. This was quickly followed by a letter to parents from Wiltshire seeking to clarify the confusion over admission numbers and restating that Ridgeway's permitted Intake will be 240 children. An LEA officer said the priority arrangements for the area are unchanged. The LEA had agreed September 1995 intake numbers with each school last March. However Christine Gale said that the school had been in discussion with Wiltshire about increasing the intake to 270. "The County told us in the summer that we had to take the higher numberbecause

of the space available. "The headteacher agreed to this on 6 September and made the information public at the open days in October. It subsequently became clear that Wiltshire would only permit the increase from 1996 - not 1995. But we wanted to cater for parental requests and offer the extra places from next year and we appealed to the Secretary of State for Education for support. Wiltshire then stated they would remove some of our 22 mobiles. "We were faced with a dilemma: get rid of 20 year old temporary buildings in very poor condition, or offer extra places. Removal of the mobiles has been our aim for a long time and we had to accept we could not offer places to all those who want to attend the school. "We regret raising parents hopes, but this issue is out of our control."

Garden reveals its secrets A school garden built with the help of a house building companywas officially opened in November. Tregoze School off Hay Lane, Grange Park, was built close to the site of the old St Mary's Church Rectory or Grange. The remnants of the garden and orchard have been turned into an environmental exploration area which the children now call their secret garden. JJH Homes, who are building houses next door, sponsored the design, construction and planting of a landscaped seating area after the children put foward their ideas. These were then translated into plans by award winning landscape designers Julian Dowle Partnership. Eight residents have taken up the idea put forward by resident Joyce Telling after she learnt about the Oxfam appeal for warm clothing. However they're running out of wool and they want readers to turn out their drawers and donate any yarn they don't need. The knitters were all keen to direct their skills to a good cause. Georgina Coyle said that children and grandchildren don't want to wear knitted items any longer. Dolly Oram agreed. "Babies don't have any choice. Now the grandchildren are older they say, "I can't wear that gran!" Eighty five year old Annie Dennis said the Rwanda project was the first time residents had knitted together for an appeal. Charles Hoyle with Shirley Ludford ready to record Eighty-two year old Charles Hoyle, who lives at Windmill Court, will be making his first broadcast on Shirley Ludford's show on Sunday 11 December, around 6.30pm. Charles described the radio reading as the second most extraordinary event of his life. The first was being invited on the stage at the Folie Bergere in Paris. Charles has just acquired a computer so that he 'can rattle out a few more poems.'

The group, which has published two anthologies and helped to promote children's writing workshops and literary competitions during its three-year existence, is finishing on a high note with a members story competition to be judged by popular local author Margaret Bacon and a Christmas Social at the Haydon Centre on 15 December from 7.30pm. The success of the group can be seen in its members, many of whom gained the confidence to get into print for the first time. It will be sadly missed.

Corinne Glanville takes a look at 'Junior,' a way-out comedy with a bizarre genetic twist which opens at the MGM on 2 December Ivan Reitman is the Canadian born director and producer of Junior. His films to date have grossed more than two billion dollars. His name seems synonymous with not only making money for the film studios, but also giving audiences entertaining films. Junior looks like being another winner. Reitman worked with Arnold Schwarzeneggerthrough Kindergarten Cop and Twins and they obviously make a good team. Schwarzenegger is a fortysomething research scientist called Alexander Hesse. He gets much more than he bargained for when an enterprising gynaecologist (Danny De Vito) persuades him to become the first human test subject for a wonder drug that ensures healthy pregnancies. scientists who takes over Hesse's University research facilities after his grant is cutoff. Unbeknown to all, the embryo is one of Thompson's own, affectionately named Junior and kept in the deepfreeze until she can get away from her dedication to science long enough to become impregnated. 'Damn selfish man stealing one of her eggs' is her first reaction when she discovers the truth. But she can't resist Arnie and the film follows his hilarous progress through his pregnancy. Women will sympathise with him, men will shudder at the thought of what he's going through. Junior is a great PG film forthe whole family. It gets down to the facts of life in a amusing, unconventional way and peals away pre-conceived ideas with its witty use of the cliches around 'starting a family.' It's the big one for Christmas.

Also opening on 2 December, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas is an animated film made with creepy puppets. It's set in a place called Halloweentown and the hero is Jack Skellington - a skeleton in a black pinstripe suit. There's a rag doll, Sally, who is being kept a virtual prisoner by a crippled Frankenstein figure, not to mention the two-faced (literally) mayor whose face swivels around, allowing him to smile or snarl. It seems the main purpose and pleasure in life of Halloweentown's residents, is to scare each other. Until, that is, Jack stumbles upon Christmas Town and he 'kidnaps' Santa Claus and plans to take over his role. The Halloween puppets think Christmas will be improved if they can hijack it and make it scary. It makes a change from 'A White Christmas'.

Youth drama group starts working up inspirations The new West Swindon based youth drama group called Inspirations has had an enthusiastic start.

And there's been interest from young people across the town. Set up by Kerrie Porter from Toothill with help from youth worker Kim Bowen, the first meetings in November attracted young people from West Swindon, Stratton and some youngsters from Wroughton have been in contact. The group is aimed at 14 to 20 year olds and only one of the dozen young people has done any drama outside school. Kerrie, who has a RSA Diploma in Variety and Entertainment and

used to work with the Swindon Red Dot Theatre Company, said she was delighted with the initial interest in Inspirations. "It's great seeing so many people who want to have a go. We will work towards a production once we get to know each other. We're still keen to meet more young people. You don't have to be experienced or super talented. Join in and have fun." Ten girls and two boys have joined Inspirations and Kerrie said she would like to see more boys taking part.

Kim Bowen said group members were taking part in small workshops exploring different aspects of drama. A bumper year for collecting One of the important but little talked about activities at Lydiard Park is the growth of our collections at the house. 1994 has been an exceptionally rewarding year with over 150 historic objects collected, many of which are now on display and others standing by for use in temporary exhibitions. All the items which we collect either originate from the house or directly relate to the St John family who owned Lydiard Park and much of the surrounding land. The dining room has benefited from a large quantity of table silver bearing the St John family crest. A magnificent silver rose bowl is now also on display in the library; it was presented to Lord Bolingbroke in 1917 by the numerous tenants on his Lydiard estate. China, books, letters, photographs and pictures have all found their way back to the house and a display of some of these can be seen in the morning room. Please note that the house will be closed on 24, 25, 26 December and 2 January.

Studying towns Pupils at Shaw Ridge school have been comparing changes in towns since the 1930s. They have visited Wood Street, Old Town and studied the industrial townscapes in the exhibition of Lowry paintings at the Bath Road Museum. The children used different materials and techniques and also produced poems and paintings for a competition run by the museum. 'Women Out West' is a group of women who meet weekly during term time. If you would like to meet new people and make friends you will find a warm welcome with us. LocalLives Treating cancer by self-help There are few connections between building houses and treating cancer using 'alternative' methods, but West Swindon house developer David Sacof will talk at length on both subjects. He's has built around 1,000 houses in Swindon over the last fifteen years and his present Standard Homes development can be found at The Prinnels, Shaw. As a civil engineer in Malaya during the 1950s he came into contact with eastern health treatments. But it was in 1980 when arthritis started to limit his wife's use of her hands that Mr Sacof's interest in complementary medicine was aroused. Surgery was offered, but the chances of success were limited and Mr and Mrs Sacof decided to try a different treatment route. Acupuncture started to overcome Mrs Sacof's difficulties and through various contacts they became aware of a group of people in Bristol buying a house to establish a different kind of treatment centre for cancer. Mr Sacof became the Finance Director for the Bristol Cancer Help Centre at Grove House which was opened by Prince Charles in 1983 as the country's only residential centre offering care and complementary therapy to people with cancer. The Duchess of Kent has also visited and many celebrities have attended for treatment. For the last year Mr Sacof has been the Chairman of the Council of the Centre. However the Bristol Centre has been marked by controversy and negative interest by the media because of its different approach to cancer. "Orthodox cancer treatment is marked by its concentration on the body and the cancer," said Mr Sacof. "The Bristol centre takes the view that people with cancer can do something for themselves using counselling, stress reduction, healing and diet to deal with thebody, mind, emotions and spirit as a whole.

"That's how it should be," said Mr Sacoff. "The Bristol Cancer Centre is a happy place which helps people understand their disease and deal with it positively."

At the beginning of the year the Centre welcomed a report by the Charity Commission censuring the Imperial CancerResearch Fund and the Cancer Research Fund for publishing flawed research in 1990 about the work of the Bristol Centre. "The four years under a cloud was a very difficult time for all working at the Centre and also the patients who put their faith in the Centre's work," said Mr Sacof. "We wonder why two major, responsible medical charities who raise a combined total of around £100 million a year allowed such flawed research to be published." He said a large and loyal group of supporters had sustained the Centre and it was now moving from strength to strength. Patients' contributions only cover about a third of the costs and a further £300,000 has to raised annually. The Centre is staffed by doctors and nurses trained in orthodox western medical methods who work alongside complimentary therapists, some of whom are also medically trained.
