The £1.25 million structure spanning the Swindon Gloucester railway line is also the town's largest work of public art. Mayor of Thamesdown Doreen Dart said the bridge was a milestone in the development of the town and represented a linkbetween the western expansion and future development in the north of the town. She congratulated builders Costain Construction and the artist for their impressive collaboration. Although the old Moredon road will eventually become a footpath/ cycle route from which the artwork can be seen, there is at present no obvious pedestrian route along the new busy road to allow viewing.

A Toothill couple celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary at a party atToothill Church on 30 October. Ann Hall reports. Toothill Church was decorated with yellow and white flowers, lots of golden balloons and a 'Happy Anniversary' banner as a big thank you to George and Babs Wilkinson who have been faithful and active members of the church since they arrived in West Swindon in 1979. About sixty people enjoyed a good tea complete with a two-tiered cake, followed by music and poetry given by Church members. Arthur and Babs were presented with a lovely bouquet of yellow and gold flowers and a large cheque which will be put towards an electric wheelchair which Babs now needs. Arthur has been a Church Warden for ten years and Babs helped in many ways until too unwell to attend regularly. They renewed their wedding vows at the main service the following day where the theme was 'God's love and ours.' The whole weekend was a celebration of their love for each other, and their son Martin, God's love for them and their love for him, and the love felt between members of Toothill Church.

Top award for Guide A Girl Guide from West Swindon has achieved the much sought after Baden Powell Trefoil, only the second in the area to have gained the award. Rowena Phillippo, 15, from WorsleyRoad, Freshbrook received her badge and certificate from GuiderHilda Cooper at Freshbrook Church in November. Rowena, a Year 10 pupil at Greendown School, had to workon a range of tasks in order to qualify for the Trefoil. She had to research and make a presentation on an aspect of Guide history and also investigate the Guide movement in Europe. She improved her bell ringing at St Mary's Church in Lydiard Park as part of the hobby and craft section and worked on a farm after school and during weekends to gain the service element of the award. Rowena gained thirty five badges during her five years in the Guides and is now pursuinga 'youngleader' qualification with Freshbrook Guides. Contributing to this is her

After serving for the last time in April 1992 at Freshbrook Community Centre, a new lunch club for elderly and non-retired housebound people restarts on Friday 14 January. This time anybody in West Swindon who falls into the need category will be able to attend said organising comunity worker Pam Pixton. The cost of the lunch will be £1.60 and transport is available for people with a disability. In the short term anybody who is mobile but finds it difficult to get to Freshbrook Centre for lack of public transport can use the minibus which will be picking people up around the area. Despite the erroneous publicity by otherpublications, hundreds ofpeople turned up in relatively mild weather conditions at the Westlea School bonfire night. Dave Franklin and the Westlea Scouts built the bonfire and they

were responsible for the firework display which was extremely successful and enjoyed by everyone. The hot dogs together with the hot coffee and soup warmed the spectators. Everyones' efforts succeeded in raising £820 for school funds.

The Westlea AfterSchool Club has now been running for two years and has been a successful venture writes Sheila Mitchell. Fifty families currently benefit from the scheme, with seventy children a week attending the sessions which run each weekday from 3.20pm until 5.30pm. With additional funding another member of staff could be recruited which would enable the Club to accommodate the twenty four children who are currently on the waiting list. A new dance school has just started in West Swindon and is looking for enthusiastic people looking for fun, friends and fitness. Maria Howse, who runs the Cadley Dance Centre, has launched disco dance classes at Greendown School on Monday evenings. At present a small band of girls living in West Swindon and Purton from the classes Maria used to run in Stratton attend her new sessions, but she wants a lot more to join in. "No experience is need, just enthusiasm and energy," says Maria. "1 teach the basic dance routines but then the dancers take over and add intheirown ideas which we all work on together. Maria aims to bring the group on so that they can enter competitions around the country. The first one will in fact be on 18 December. Rosanna explained that unlike the rest of the body, where muscles are attached to bone, most of the facial muscles areonlyattached totheskin or other muscles. An outbreak of Halloween hallucinations occurred on the evening of Saturday 30 October. Sitings were reported by many bemused pub regulars in the West Swindon, Old Town and Wootton Bassett areas. Claims that these were a direct result of alcohol on the premises can now be laid to rest as the events were in fact due to a Halloween Pub Run in aid of the West Swindon Family & Community Project's under 5's Christmas party. 0n4 November those attending the Breakaways Group at the Family Project were able to listen to a fascinating talk about hypnotherapy given by Mike Dee ably assisted by his wife Lyn, who, due to ill health, was unable to give the talk herself. Mike explained how hypno-

therapy can be used to promote better health by getting to the root of problems which can cause illness or anxiety. There was much in what he said which helped to dispel some of the more negative reactions to hypnotherapy and showed that it was a very valuable therapy to be considered.

Spontaneity is what pantomime is all about but if Herman the Henchman makes a rapid exit with a worried look one night during an early performance of the Wyvem Theatre's Christmas panto, don't expect him to return. Herman will have abandoned Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs for the evening and will be bombing back to Cardiff in the persona of expectant dad Brian Hibberd. Brian's actress girlfriend Caroline Bunce is expecting their first child and he's not going to miss the event for all the delights of Snow White has to offer. "The baby's due on Christmas Day, the only day we have off, but the chances of such pinpoint accuracy is slim," said Brian in a panto promotion visit to Swindon in October. "It's not part of the contract to havea mobiletelephone inHerman's pouch, so I may have to slip a pager down my tights. Let's hope it doesn't squeak during the show or I'll have to continue with a solo performance on the InterCity 125." Rehearsals for Snow White start on6Decemberfor the openingnight on 15 December. different kind of theatre; I absolutely love it. You have to mix melodrama, which nobody does anymore, and letting the audience in on the act. Many actors won't do panto because they have to involve the audience. It's the first experience of theatre for many people. It involves the whole family and it's possibly the only time that working class people attend live performances. "Panto is 70% energy, two shows a day, three on Saturday and you've

got to put your whole self into each show. It allows you to develop the part and play it in different ways, but if the kids sense you're not trying they start throwing sweets." Brian admitted that although he's involved in giving joy to thousands of people each Christmas, playing panto allows him to avoid being embroiled in the overwhelming commercialism of the season. Brian's been busy since he took Coronation Street garage mechanic Doug Murray off into memory. He's done a three week chat show stint on Radio Wales, appeared in a half hour play for HTV in November, featured in five Radio 4 plays after a twenty year break from radio, and will be seen in a Frank Skinner series before Christmas. He's also well known as one of the Flying Pickets, the a'cappella pop group who reached Number I with 'Only You' ten years ago this December. The variety and uncertainty of the acting business is now Brian's life. "One minute you're out of work, the next you're in Poland as a transvestite gypsy drinkingcoffee with Omar Sharif. It's a great life."

Christmas present possibilities in cheaper prescriptions It's now cheaper for people who have to have regular prescriptions over a length of time. For the first time, pharmacies are now able to offer pre-payment certificates for prescription charges. Generally known as season tickets, they can be an effective way of reducing the cost of regular prescriptions. If a patient only has one item per month, it is cheaper to pay the £4.25 charge. However once a person has two or more items per month, money is saved with a season ticket as it pays for all the prescriptions required during the time the ticket covers.

Season tickets for four months costing f22 and £60.60 fora full year are available. Local pharmacist Ken Schofield of the Ashington Way Pharmacy, who supplied the Season Ticket information, said, "they are a good way of saving money if you have regular prescriptions. For hay fever sufferers who are prescribed antihistamine tablets, nasal sprays and eye drops every month, it is well worth thinking about next spring. If you know of somebody who has a lot for prescriptions, making a Christmas present out of a Season Ticket would be a thoughtful surpnse.

The Piano is cinematic poetry Lisa Clark reviews a stunning film now on at the MGM Films that arrive in ablaze of critical acclaim can be a big disappointment. The Piano is not one of them. This is New Zealand director Jane Campion's thirdfilm and provesthat she is a major force to be reckoned with. The Piano opens in mid-19th century Scotland. Ada (Holly Hunter) and her daughter Flora (Anna Paquin) are about to be shipped to New Zealand where Ada will marry a landowner she has never met. Ada and Flora land on an enormous deserted beach with all their possessions, dominated by a treasured Broadwood piano. It is through this instrument, a notepad and her daughter that Ada communicates with the world, as she has not spoken since she was six years old.

When her newly married husband Stewart (Sam Neill) refuses to transport the piano from the beach to his remote farm, he loses what little hope there ever was for Ada caring for him -something he yearns for throughout the film. Baines (Harvey Keitel), who is Stewart's estate manager, strikes a bargain to take the piano to his house if Ada gives him lessons and grants him physical privileges in exchange for its repossession, key by key. This isn't a dry Victorian saga. Ada's self-imposed one-way communication gives her paradoxical power in atime when women were meant to be seen, but not heard; when piano legs were covered to prevent erotic thoughts; and when the idea of female sexuality was a contradiction in terms.

The film's powerful images are infused with such feeling that word's are not always needed. The contrast between such raw surroundings and the swathed bodies and encumbering manners of the settlers gives the camera much to work with. And then there is the acting. Holly Hunter, best known for 'Broadcast News,' is magnificent. No word crosses her lips yet she dominates the film with her face, her body, her hands and above all her eyes. Sam Neill and Harvey Keitel are also both excellent and littleAnna Paquin is superb. If there was any justice in this world, Jane Campion and Holly Hunter would score an Oscar for their work. See it if you can. You'll not only enjoy it but will encourage box office bossesto book stimulating films like it in the future.

Catholic parents are up in arms about a Wiltshire County Council proposal to cut free transport to denominational schools. Labourcoundillors atCounty Hall have suggested the cash saving move, but Labour councillors on Thamesdown Council have vowed to back parents with children at church schools. Eileen Mochan, mother of five year old Matthew, fromGrangePark said Catholic families were verydisappointed that such a divisive proposal was considered at all. "We're supposed to have freedomof choice, but this is an unfair restriction." She pointed out that education authorities in other parts of the country had tried similar moves and had been defeated in court actions.

Parent Louise Burke fromToothill said parents who want denominational education would be discriminated against. 'We could see children living in the same street getting free transport to Ridgeway or Bradon Forest and others paying for a bus to St Joseph's." Toothill Labour councillor on Thamesdown Council Maurice Fa nning said, "as a governor at Holy Rood Catholic Infants School, Iknow how important this funding is to parents. I urge Wiltshire County Councillors to think again." Local councillors Sue Bates and Maurice Fanning can be contacted on 872247 and 643424 respectively. All three of West Swindon designated local authority secondary schools have held parentballots on thequestion of Grant Maintained Status during the year. Parents at Greendown School turned down a proposal to go Grant Maintained by 13 votes at the beginning of the year and parents at Ridgeway School rejected the idea last month by 17 votes. Only parents at Bradon Forest have voted in favour of breaking away from Wiltshire County Council and receive funding directly from the government.

Hundreds of people from res around visited Modrail93 at Greendown School over the last weekend of November. After ten years in the centre of the town, Swindon Model Railway Clubs's annual exhibition moved out to the west. The popularity of the show had placed such great demands on the available facilities that the club decided to celebrate its fortieth anniversary by moving to a new venue. Twelve top quality working model railway layouts in many different gauges enthralled visitors with their painstaking detail repro-

ducing exact representations of historic scenes. Several model railway traders were in attendance, offering more or less anything to the experienced railway modeller through to the enthusiastic starter. Several railway preservation societies were present selling railway related items to raise funds for their restoration projects. The organisers were pleased that attendance numbers were about the same as last year, given the new venue. They complemented the space available, the ease of access and the free parking.

Building Bridges with Partner Schools There have been exciting developments in Greendown's work with the primary pupils of West Swindon. Greendown places great importance on building curriculum links between primary and secondary education to make the most of the skills and knowledge pupils bring with them. Tim Noble and Ann Williams have been assisting Mrs Pam Nayar and pupils at Windmill School, on their project on 'Ropes'. They have helped pupils to study the properties and characteristics of ropes and to look at knots, lashes and rope bridges. The pupils then had to make models of Himalayan suspension bridges using a minimum of resources. Paul King, Greendown's Head of Technology, judged the best bridges, which are on temporary display at Greendown. Technology teacher Ray Barker has helped with the continuation of this work, a topic on 'Sailing Ships'. The skills and knowledge they gain on this topic will be revisited with computer technology in year 7 by Greendown's work on boats. Tim Noble is currently working at Westlea School on their topic, 'India', with Mrs Alison Pass and Mrs Judith Golek, and has supported their research topic, which included a visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum. Westlea pupils have written a 'postcard from India'. He is also icsisting atToothill School with a project on World War H evacuees. In response to a request from the primary Heads, Greendown has set aside time in one of its science laboratories so that primaryschools canvisit and study practical elements of the National Curriculum. Sue Byrne, Greendown's key stage 3 Science coordinator, has three lessons dedicated to supporting primary teachers in delivering science. Pupils are also given valuable experience in working in a fully-equipped specialist laboratory. The primary, lab. has already been used by Oliver Tomkins, Freshbrook, Westlea and Tregoze schools and it is planned that all West Swindon year 6 pupils will have visited the primary lab, by Easter. Tregoze year 6 pupils, and their teacher, Mrs Penny Purvis, have also visited Greendown Resource Centre to learn about

the subject index and the Dewey system. Greendown was awarded ÂŁ10,000 by WH Smith as part of the Education 2000 initiative, and part of this money was to build up the library and resource centre so that West Swindon primary pupils could use the facilities. The pupils wrote letters of thanks for their visit, including Stephen: "Dear Mrs Eagle Thank you for letting me use the library. I liked playing the quiz game. It was fun. I hope we can go again. Yours sincerely from Stephen"

Last summer, Mrs Sue Sutton's year9English class wrote books for younger readers in the year 1 class at Tregoze School. The books were sent to Tregoze, read to and by the children who chose their favourite books. The infants then visited Greendown and the 14 year old 'authors' of the favourite books read to them.

"We are delighted to be working in some way with all our partner primary schools," said Tim Noble, "There is such a variety of people and projects linking staff and children. "Although Greendown is only built to take about half of the pupils of West Swindon fewer, in fact, than the numbers whose parents have already visited this year - we would not wish to only work with those who are likely to come to us. Any work we do is with all of the primary pupils in each school so that those who come to us have the best possible preparation for secondary school."

GCSE results show sustained improvement The recent government 'league tables' show that last year's improvements in the percentages of GCSE results have been sustained. Once again, no pupil left without at least one GCSE pass, and 93% achieved five or more A - G passes. 67.7% achieved at least one higher grade (A - C) pass, the numbers of A and B grades rose, and English and Maths both improved, although the percentage of pupils gaining five or more higher grades dipped slightly to 38.5%. These figures in themselves only show part of the picture, of course. The real importance rests in the success of Greendown's leavers. "What we were really pleased about was that so many of these students achieved their best potential", said Mr Ian Matthews, Headteacher. "We are delighted with the pupils who gained A grade passes that would match any student, anywhere, and that so many of the year group attained or exceeded the grades they wanted and the targets they set themselves." At the moment, the tables are rather a blunt instrument, and parents are right to be cautious. In Greendown, we know of six pupils who gained four higher passes who were only one mark off a C in a fifth subject. This small difference would have raised the school several 'places' in the published tables that were ranked on five A - C passes. This may also explain the wide swings seen in comparison with last year, with some local schools 'rising' by over ten per cent and some 'falling' by the same margin. This year, in addition to examination passes,the tables also

included percentages of pupils with absences not covered by parental notes ('unauthorised absencrs'). The inaccuracies of these "truancy rate" figures have already been widely reported. Greendown's 'average' position here shows that we must continue to encourage parents to follow the rules and to write notes after every absence to ensure that our generally good attendance is reflected in next year's figures. "We are satisfied with our successes, but certainly not complacent", said Mr Matthews. "The GCSE results do not yet show how a school takes its pupils from 'point A' at age 11 to 'point B' at 16. They do indicate areas where things are working well, and areas where we can improve still further for next year. Results are also one useful indicator in helping parents choose a school, and in enabling parents who visit us to ask informed questions." Greendown parents received results information from the school in September, as did parents of West Swindon pupils in their last year at primary school. The majority of parents of these year 6 pupils visited Greendown's five prospective parents' evenings in October. Mr Matthews said, "Parents of our current pupils can contact us at anytime. Parents of prospective pupils can - in addition to our organised evenings - visit us on any day they choose to and can see us as we are. The prevailing atmosphere is calm and quiet; pupils and staff are friendly and approachable. We are proud of our pupils' achievements, and of the school."

During my time at Greendown I could never properly imagine what it would be like doing my GCSEs - let alone what I was going to do when I left. I always liked the idea of university, but like all other dreams you never fully believe in them until they actually come true. But now 3 years on with both GCSEs and A levels behind me, here I am living in Plymouth. What am I actually doing here? Well, apart from experiencing life living in a coastal town, meeting loads of new people and thoroughly enjoying myself, I am also studying for a degree in Media and Public Relations. So far student life has proved to be every bit as exciting, demanding and fun as they said it would be. I am living in a huge old town house with 7 other students from my university and, although it sounds strange, having complete independence has probably been the hardest thing I have had to adjust to. Fitting into university life has been easy, but having responsibilities for all my own cooking, washing and cleaning has been quite another thing altogether! With only four weeks left until we break up, a photographic assignment for Media to complete, a PR exhibition promoting the image of Science in Society to organise, and the Christmas Ball to prepare for, things are going to be pretty hectic! I think coming away to university has given me the opportunity to put a number of essential life skills into practise. The importance of self motivation and self discipline was something my experience at Greendown taught me and something that is still standing me in good stead today.

Musical Extravanganza II heading for second sell out Last December's three performances of the Musical Extravanganza were sold out well before opening night, and the audieneis were delighted with the shows. By popular demand, the same team of teachers, Sam Gee and AndrĂŠ Pysancyn, are producing a follow-up, which will run for five nights. The show will run from Tuesday, 14th to Saturday, 18th December. Tickets are going quickly, and three nights are nearly sold out. The script for the show, backed by popular music from the 1970s, was written by Sam Gee and imagines a future where music and dancing have been banned. The 'revoutionaries' plan to outwit the secret police and sing and dance their way to freedom.

The two week work experience for year 11 pupils in September was again highly successful and the Young Enterprise Scheme for year 10 is going from strength to strength. Ben Phillips, Barrie Syers, Lee Palmer and Andrew Witchell are selling their Christmas wares until 16th December. A group is preparing a news magazine the 'Greendown Gazette' for sale in school. Editor Trevor Hartup admitted, "The pressure took us by surprise, and the first edition came out in a rush. We left some mistakes in it, but we won't make so many next time." Another group has produced a sports magazine called 'OneNil.' The enterprise spirit is catching: four year 8 pupils have already designed, budgeted, produced and sold a magazine for lower school called 'San Francisco,' started as part of their technology work - and made a small but healthy profit!

Emma selected as a West of England hockey reserve - two years early!

County Cup Success - on the way to the final?

Emma Kingstone, in year 9, attended an under 16 county hockey players tournament at Bournemouth on Sunday, 14th November, in which 26 players and 4 reserves were chosen for a West of England squad from over 150 players attending. Emma, pictured right, was selected as a reserve, which means she will attend training sessions if there is an injury in the squad. This is an outstanding achievement as Emma is still only 13, and most of the squad selected are two years her senior. Emma, whose appearance at trials in Taunton was previously featured in This is Greendown, dearly has time to go on to still greater success. Emma, also a devoted fan of Manchester United, plays hockey for Greendown and is also a regular member of Swindon Hockey Club, playing for their 2nd Xl. Well done, Emma!

Greendown's oldest pupils in Year 11 are preparing for an Under 16 County Cup football semi-final with Hreod Parkway School, having won their first two ties. Duke of Edinburgh grows at Greendown Since the reopening of the Greendown Open Award Centre, participants in the Bronze Award have increased steadily. The current ten include six pupils from Greendown and four from other local schools. During the winter months the main emphasis has to be on training and on raising group fitness levels in preparation for next year's expedition work. This has taken place at Greendown between 6pm and 8pm on Wednesdays, and has included some orienteering in Lydiard - in the dark! Weekend activities have included canoeing and a night hike. Friday afternoons have been spent organising the service element of the award with work in a local hospital, in a local stables and on recycling within the school to assist the Thamesdown recycling scheme. The commitment shown by all participants is high, as they rapidly head towards success at Bronze level. The ten have quickly become a supportive and united group. Oh no! Not another article about healthy eating at Christmas District Dietician Gill Pearson says many Christmas dishes are healthy, but don't overdo it

I can hear your moans at the title of this article. Not another person telling me Christmas is bad for me! Not so, you will be pleased to know that the dietitians in Swindon want you to enjoy your food, not suffer it. Many foods traditionally eaten over the Christmas period are fine. Turkey is a low fat meat and a good choice, and of course all the fruit and vegetables are good for you. Make the most of the satsumas and clementines. Even the nuts usually eaten at Christmas are high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat which is better for your heart (not so good for the waistline though). Both Christmas pudding and mincemeat are low in fat and contain some fibre, but remember to watch the pastry, perhaps choose mince pies

Think security for Christmas

Don't let the villains spoil the season of good cheer says Sergeant. Terry Cuss of Swindon Police Last month, I mentioned a number of burglaries in a small area of Ramleaze and the Prinnels. Since then, following the execution of search warrants and recovery of property, a number of people have been arrested and some of these offences cleared up. There have been no further burYouth Issues As a follow up to the topics of the last few months, namely youngsters in West Swindon, earlier this month officers attended a meeting at Freshbmok Community Centre, organised with the help of local youth workers, to meet some of the local youngsters who felt aggrieved by some of the press reports about youth behaviour. It was a useful meeting with one of the main points being that they felt they were all being tai ied with the same brush with no one listening to them. I feel that this is an important point to remember. It's no use to labeling all youngsters because of the actions of a few. We only alienate all of them and a vicious circle starts again. We need to encourage youngsters to have a pride in their own communities. That way they will sort out the troublemakers for themselves. We've all heard of peer group pressure in a negative sense. Lets encourage it to work positively to do something right. Building on the good working relationship we have now developed between ourselves and the local youth workers, we recently jointly organised a challenge football match between the Police and the local youngsters. This took place on the evening of Monday 8 November on the Greendown All Weather pitch. We had such a good turn out that we had to organise a mini tournament to cater

I just love this time of the year. Everyone, young and old is getting excited because Christmas ishereonce again. The decorations and lights are out all over the place and Father Christmas is sitting in his grotto waiting forthe children to tell himof the toys they would like him to bring on Christmas Day. Have you seen him atAsda? Christmas cards are selling rapidly and presents are being bought for our loved ones - who says there is or was a recession? Whataboutall the food! We're all busy stocking up for the great event. Trolleys laden with all sorts of foods, drinks, sweets ready to fill the kitchen cupboards and shelves to the brim. Isn't it exciting? There is an urgency and expectancy in the air. All is hustle and bustle, hectic and frantic - but it's all worthwhile .... isn't it? And why do we do it? All because a baby was born in a stable in Bethlehem nearly two thousand years ago. And what a baby! He changed the face of the earth and brought light into our darkness. Christmas is his birthday but you wouldn't think so would you? That baby, Jesus Christ Our Saviour, wants us all to enjoy his birthday because it is the most important birthday of the year. When we celebrate our birthday only our family and close friends join in but when it is the birthday of Jesus we all celebrate. Yes, lets really celebrate this Christmas and keep the celebration going for as long as we can perhaps until next Christmas, and the next, and the next....

Christmas doesn't Come - You have to buy it Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat, An overdue bill has just dropped on the mat; A relation has phoned and they're coming to stay and you know that they cause your temper to fray! Everyone wishes you the Season's best but, due to the hassle, you just feel depressed. The pressure is on - it's the last shopping day, and you wish those people would get out of your way! The cash is your pocket is getting low but your kids are expecting a Nintendo! They've seen it on telly, was it August or before? And your neighbour's getting one for her kids, next door. You can't afford the presents they're asking for, the money won't stretch, you just wish you had more.

Father Tom outside St Peters' Maybe that is asking too much. Fortunately the Good Lord knows our weaknesses and failures as well as our good points. We all have good points. In some they are easily noticed and in others - well, that's another story. God knows us and understands our humanity and thankfullyHe is forgiving. At Christmas it is easier to love Him and our neighbour. The festive spirit helps us to do so. However come the New Year we slip into our old ways - that's life. There are twelve days of Christmas (too many for some) and all we are asked to do is have a great time and make sure everyone around us does too. Jesus shares his birthday with us all. There is the lesson. We are to share all that we are, all that we do, all that we have with others and more so with those less fortunate than ourselves. Let us really enjoy Christmas. Happy birthday Jesus.

The birth of Swindon Family Church Until August 1991 Andrew and Chris Leakey with their three children, were leading a Baptist Church at Kempsey, near Worcester. Andrew began to realise through God, the Bible and people he ree spected, that it was time to move to a new church in a new area. Towards the end of that year, Andrew took two and a half months off to pray and visit other churches. "It was a chance to listen, so as to hear God for the future and spend time with my family." says Andrew. Although rested and refreshed he was no clearer as to where or when they should move. "We just put what we heard on hold and waited and listened." For a few years Andrew had been meeting to pray with another pastor, Brian Kille and his wife June from Malmesbury. They soon realised that they shared the same passion for the Church. Brian suggested they explored the new development area in West Swindon. Andrew remembered thinking when he saw the cinema, restaurant, bowling alley, hotel and the Link Centre, 'it's

just the sortof place to start aOiurch.' It seemed, he felt, tobethehubof the community. After a time of praying and exploring the excellent facilities of the Link Centre, with a view to holding meetings there on a regular basis, Swindon Family Church was established. Many other people have joined Andrew and Brian from Swindon and around the country, as links are being forged with other churches in this, and other nations of the world. "There's a real sense of excitement that God is on the move here," says Andrew. "We know we've been called to work alongside our churches demonstrating God's love to the world in word, action and the power of the Holy Spirit." SwindonFamily Church meets at the Link Centre, Community Suite on Sundays at 10.30am and 7pm. Visitors are always welcome. There is also a mid week Family Group meeting at 8pm. LocalLives Mum and Computer Support Engineer Karen Stevenson from Eastleaze looks after her children and computer users worldwide

Most days start somewhere between 630am and 7.10am with "Mummy, are you awake mummy, MUMMY," well, I am now. I work full-time as 'Customer support engineer', fora company called Upsonic. Basically I am part of the technical support team, supplying technical data, advice and general 'know how' on uninterruptible power supplies. These are machines that protect and provide standby power for, most commonly, computer systems, but also telecoms, faxes, test equipment etc. No two days are much alike once we get past dropping Michael off at school, and me at work. Dave, my better half, takes our youngest to the child minder once I'm at work. He runs his own business from home, which allows ourchild care arrangements to be flexible. Once I get into the office 'anything can happen in the next half hour' as they say in time honoured tradition. I might be checking if a software interface is working properly, going to take measurements of the power requirements of a computer system, giving advice on which of the company's machines best matches a given computer, or other, system, or any one of the very many areas covered by tech support. However, apart from this side of my work I wear a number of other 'hats' some of which seem to place themselves on my head via the fax machine. Sounds odd? Well ... the company that manufactures the machines that we sell is Lumen Electronics, which is based in Taiwan. From time to time they send a request to our technical support department to source and supply various specialist cables, sockets and other parts. Having become involved in tracking down and arranging the supply for one or two requests for cables, I received another fax. I nearly choked when I read it. I had been asked to source millions of semiconductors and only

three weeks before they had to get to Taiwan! Much as the idea of being an international buyer seems vaguely glamorous the reality was definitely interesting. "Who are you?" was a very common question fromthe various dealers/brokers in semiconductors, these little world turners not normally being part of our buying requirernents. Ultimately, although we did end up buying several thousands of the little beggars. Taiwan had to find supplies from elsewhere as we just couldn't get the parts there quickenough. The whole process was very enlightening. I've also had some interesting geography lesson. Quiz: Where is Tuvalu, and what is the name of its capital? I didn't know, until we had a letter from the office of the prime minister asking for some detailed maintenance guidelines on one of our machines. At first we thought it was a 'wind up', but on checking it out it proved to be perfectly genuine. Before I know it, the clock says 5pm and its home, tea, do some Open University study (half asleep) and drop into bed, .... "Mummy, mummy ... are you awake?..." PS Thecapital of Tuvalu is Funafuti. It's near the Soloman Islands which are 'near' Australia.
