Leisure Park turf officially cut Work on West Swindon's Leisure Park was officially launched by the Mayor of Thamesdown Court. Ken Savage on 15 November when he took controls of a JCB to ceremonially give the go-ahead to the multimillion pound project opposite the Link Centre. Speaking at a reception following the turf cutting, Coun. Savage said Shaw Ridge Leisure Park would bring a new, exciting dimension to facilities in Thamesdown. He was particularly glad to see 10 pin bowling return to Swindon after 20 years. Bryan Smith, Planning Director for Carter Commercial Developments, who have brought the project to fruition, paid tribute to the officers and members of Thamesdown Council. "The Council has demonstrated great professionalism and enthusiasm

Speaking afterwards Mr Smith said he was sure that the Park would be very attractive to people who live close-by and those from further afield. "I live in Bristol and I often bring my family to enjoy what Swindon has. It's very impressive and Shaw Ridge is being used as a model for other developments in other parts of the country." Link Centre co-ordinator John Fisher welcomed the Leisure Park. "The cinema, superbowl, restaurants and night club will compliment the Link Centre. With its four star hotel and the Hotel Ibis near the Delta Tennis Centre, Swindon is going to be a major tourist attraction for families who want to take an active weekend break. As a resident of West Swindon, the area is becoming even more attractive to live in." WESTLEA School PATCH room opens A unique room at Westlea School full of educational toys and materials was officially launched on 20 November. Called the PATCH room, Parents and Their Children, it contains a large quantity of high quality and expensive toys aimed at stimulating a child's development. It also has a range of educational packs made by parents which are equally good for helping children learn. Headteacher Neil Griffiths said the room has a number of aims and will cater for a variety of children. "We find that some children come into school with limited pre-school experience, poor language development and generally lots of problems. In some cases we spend up to a year going over ground which a child should have covered before school. "We've been running workshops for parents for a long time to help them learn about what goes on in school and to encourage them to work with their children on pre-school activities. The PATCH room now offers a resource to parents. It's a quiet room for working in, not a
creche and not a free for all. "A maximum of five parents with a child can come in at any one time. Each will have a work card which they can use to mark which activities they've done, and each piece of equipment will be colour coded to show what kind of educational value it has." Mr Griffiths said the room will be a venue for a regular coffee morning and will also be used by parents from other parts of Swindon. "For the first hour of the morning, parents can come in for a cup of coffee after dropping their child into school. It's Your Health If you consider 'good health' to be something important in your life, then West Swindon's first Health Roadshow will be right up your street. Health is not just about playing sport and keeping fit. It's also about eating a healthy diet, maintaining correct body weight and coping with the stresses and strains of life. The Health Roadshow in the Mall at the Link Centre on Tuesday 5 and Wednesday 6 December will give people a chance to talk to health workers about anything that concerns them about their health and wellbeing. There will a chance to 'have a go' on equipment to see how fit you are, a fun quiz to try and information in a display and to take away. "The Health Roadshow has deliberately been arranged before Christmas," said local Health Visitor Jane Lyons. "We don't want to spoil the festive season, but it would be good for people to think about themselves a little. "Many people are concerned about whether their diet is right or how smoking and drinking is affecting their health. Hopefully they'll take a little time and come on down to the Link Centre to talk health matters. "It's not too early to decide on what your New Year's resolution will be!" The Health Roadshow will be open at the Link Centre from 10a.m to 8p.m. on Tuesday 5 December and 10a.m. to 4p.m. on Wednesday 6 December. 10 George Tweed Gardens soon to welcome first residents A new elderly persons group dwelling in Shaw may receive its first residents by Christmas. The modern building, finished in sand coloured bricks, green roof and red fascia boards and chimneys, has been built by Thamesdown Council as part of its programme to provide selfcontained but sheltered accommodation for elderly people. Fifty-four flats have been built around the old oak tree, situated behind the traditionally designed village centre.

The group dwelling has been named after George Tweed who died in May, aged 83. He and his wife Ann moved to Toothill in 1976 and moved together into Freshbrook's Elsie Hazel Court group dwelling a couple of years ago. Mrs Tweed confessed to being taken aback when told that the Council was considering George's name for the new building. "I must say I was surprised by the decision, and of course honoured on behalf of George. I presume the council took into account the voluntary work he did throughout his life."

On guided tourbefore building work was completed, Mrs Tweed was able to point out a few things to council architects. "1 was impressed by the design and the facilities," she said. "The internal decor is very pleasing and having some flats with two bedrooms is a good idea. Each flat has its own private outside area, which is important for elderly people and the unusual shape of the communal lounge will encourage people to sit in groups and not around the outside walls like you see in so many places. I think those who move to the building will enjoy living there."

Residents reject bridge Officers of Thamesdown Borough Council manned an exhibition showing the proposed footbridge over Roughmoor Way, for one and a half hours before the start of the Shaw Residents Association Meeting on 6 November. Several residents visited before the start of the meeting and completed questionnaires. Approximately 30 other residents remained for the full meeting. Mr Weston, an engineer from the Borough explained the reasoning behind the proposal for a footbridge and why no other type of crossing was possible. The speed limit on Roughmoor Way, together with the volume of traffic make it unsuitable Underthe rules laid down by Wiltshire County Council for a pelican crossing. The overall plan for the Western expansion, with main feeder roads taking traffic in and out of the 'villages' and a network of cycleways and footpaths crisscrossing the area, negated the provision of footpaths along the feeder roads. This last option would be preferred by many residents throughout the Western expansion. The majority of residents present at the meeting felt that: 1. Two subways had already been provided from Middleleaze to the Village Centre and from Nine Elms under Roughmoor Way; a footbridge was superfluous. 2. The footbridge ends on the opposite side of the road from the school and would not assist children crossing the potentially very dangerous Cartwright Drive. No provision was likely to be made for a crossing on Catwright Drive. 3. Since the money for the project would come from Poll Tax monies, the cost of this expensive bridge, which would not be overused, was viewed as inappropriate. It was felt the money could be spent elsewhere, e.g. the Community Centre. A vote taken at the end of the meeting was unanimously against the bridge. A count of the questionnaires also gave majority vote against the bridge. A report reflecting this feeling will be prepared by Mr Sheridan of the Borough to be submitted to the members of the Council. The traffic problem in the area prompted a lengthy discussion after the Officers of the Borough had left. Requests for a crossing near
the Village Centre across Ramleaze Drive, crossing over Cartwright Drive, and slowing of traffic in Shaw were amongst those raised. Road surfacing was also needed in Sandacre Road and Ramleaze Drive. There is also an increasing problem of mopeds, quite legally but dangerously using the cycleways. These and other issues will be raised with the appropriate departments of the Local Authority and Building Contractors. The Chair also reported that a representative of Cllr Midwinter had made contact, explaining that he had been ill in hospital at the time of the previous meeting. He has been extremely ill and was returning to hospital for further treatment. The association wish him a speedy recovery. The next meeting will be on Monday4 December at 7.45pm at Shaw Church, Shaw Village Centre.
"I didn't even the know the words to Jerusalem!" writes new WI press secretary Debbie Griffiths Recently my friend asked me to join the new Shaw Women's Institute with her. My reply was, "What, join the WI?, I can't knit, I don't know the words to Jerusalem, and I'm still in my 20's!" In a sceptical mood I went along. I was pleasantly surprised. The guest speaker gave an informative and humourous talk on Welsh Love Spoons, which he collects and makes. At last I know the history of the love spoon, (quite embarrassing as I'm Welsh!) We went along also to the Moonrakers meeting which is a gathering of all the local WI groups. The guest speaker was a vicar's wife who spoke about "unmentionables" - yes, knickers! Her husband is well known as the knicker vicar! We had a marvellous time. I am now the new 'press person' for Shaw WI. So I will be keeping you informed of meeting dates and what we get up to. Why not come and join us, all ages welcome. We meet next on Monday 18 December, 730p.m. at Shaw Church, to munch mince pies and attempt to make a flowerdecoration for Christmas.

EDUCATION MATTERS Looking at Greendown In our third 'photo visit to secondary schools designated to take West Swindon children, we visit Greendown Community School in Grange Park. Although only four years old, the approach to educating children taken by Greendown is proving a success writes headteacher Ian Matthews The education system at Greendown relies on two important principles. Firstly, that school should be a pleasant and enjoyable place to come to. We try for example to maintain an attractive environment and are proud of the buildings and the care which we all take of them, in spite of the fact that they are made of modern, less durable materials! Secondly, we try to treat each student as an individual. We assess each student very carefully when they enter the school and then build on the good work started in Primary School, giving work geared to meet the needs of each individual student. The traditional '3R's' are as important now as they always were, but in addition to these basic elements, and together with the subjects in the National Curriculum we also look to make connections between the subjects, rather like the world beyond school. In fact the application of subjects is given a high prority, with much of the the theory then being applied in 'real world' situations. This is emphasised in our use of technology. We have deliberately put considerable resources into the purchase of computers and other equipment so that our students become totally familiar with the type of applications to be met when they leave school. We demand 'excellence' and high standards and expect students to
respond. Our attitude to discipline is also a key element in the Greendown system. We do not accept that children are some form of 'second class' citizen. We try to treat them in an adult manner and then expect appropriate behaviour from them. This notion of self-discipline' is perhaps very difficult for outsiders to understand. It is very easy to enforce a too rigid discipline for eleven year old students with the almost inevitable result that as students get older they will resist this rigidity with the resultant major problems. We have confidence in our students and in our methods, sufficient confidence to allow open access to anyone who is interested and wishes to visit.

Childcare legalities Last month's article by Jill Kelly on women returning to work and the need for childcare prompted two letters
From Sheena Bailey (registered childminder), Westlea After reading the article on Child Care by Jill Kelly in last months issue of The Link where she suggests that people 'let the neighbours know you are looking for someone' I would like to point out that it is in fact illegal to care for a child for money in your own home without being registered. This is to safeguard the minder, parents and most importantly the child. The house of a registered minder will have been checked for safety, ie: low level glass, stair gates, plug socket covers, window locks etc. The minder and anyone else over the age of 18 in the house are vetted to make sure they are not previous child abusers or worse. Also unless you use a registered childminder your child can not be covered by insurance. It may seem fine for someone who lives in your street to care for your child but in the event of an accident due to negligence or otherwise the carer/ neighbour could find themselves in and impossible situation. West Swindon desperately needs more registered childminders. It is not a difficult process to register and insurance is only £4.25 peryear for up to £1,000,000. Just contact the Social Services Department and they will send you details.

May I, in response to Mrs Jill Kelly's article in the November Link Magazine, stress that to care for children under the age of 5 years in your own home for reward you must be registered with the Local Authority under the "Nurseries and Childminder's Regulations Act 1948 (amended by the Health Services and Public Health Act 1968). It is unlawful to care for children in this age bracket unless you are a registered childminder or a close relative of the child. To quote the Act, 'relative' means a grandparent, brother, sister, uncle or aunt. The same law applies even if you are minding for a friend or neighbour if any reward is being made be it money or in kind! It sounds a good idea to use your magazine to coordinate child-care for the older child, over 5 years at present but when the new 'Children's Bill' is implemented in 1991 the age group will rise to 8 years. Club looking for West Swindon gymnast girls A girls gymnastic club has settled into its new home in West Swindon and is now looking for even better competition results. The Concorde Gymnastic Club moved from Wootton Bassett to the sports hall at Greendown Community School and runs three sessions a week forgirls at different levels. "The club caters for seventy girls ranging in age from four to 15," said coach Greta Homer. "The Greendown facilities are marvellous; I'm sure it will bring on the standard that the girls can reach. We have fourin the Wiltshire Gymnastic Squad and recently one
of our seven year olds had a trial for the South-west region." The club has three qualified coaches, six assistants and 5 parents training forcoachingqualifications. "Not many people in West Swindon know we're here, but now we're settled we would welcome enquiries," said Ms Homer. "There is a waiting list, but new girls will receive an invitation for a trial quite quickly. The sessions for beginners take place on Saturday mornings." Meanwhile an argument has started about whose turn it is to feed the pet fish, rabbit and guinea pig (as if we didn't have enough mouths to feed!). Cleaning the weetabix off the table, walls and floor generally takes longer than consuming it, then its coats on, strapped in and off to Nanny's house for a quick coffee load up again this time taking Nanny and Grampy forourweekly expedition to Sainsburys. Today there's a disagreement about who shops in whose trolley, but after diplomatic activity Oliver is off with Grampy to the cat food whilst Katherine heads for the carrots with Nanny and Natasha and I are left trying to remember what we need (why don't lever remember list?). Isn't it funny how children can wait until the trolley is full and you're first in the queue then demand the toilet. Grandad is called for and despatched with Oliver and Natasha and instructions on unclipping their braces. Shopping complete, Grandad is dropped off and Nanny comes back home with us. There's the lunch to prepare. As usual its difficult to cater for all tastes. Katherine is the closest to a vegetarian I've yet met, whilst Oliver is a positive carnivore, and Natasha will eat everything or nothing depending on her mood. Finally back at home, we have to frantically search for Katherine's favourite special dolly and then its time for tucking in, a goodnight kiss and Nigel is left to read a couple of stories about the current hero, Postman Pat, whilst I start our dinner. Peace reigns on the house at 7.15pm and its time to sit down and eat and catch a favourite soap opera before heading for bed ourselves to catch some sleep prior to the nocturnal rumblings. Luckily we have Katherine who sleeps all night, but two who don't - I suppose it could be worse! We thankfully have three very healthy, happy, but extremely exhausting children who have altered our lives and values completely. Over the three years we've conquered new (for us) seemingly unattainable heights of weaning, teething and toilet training in triplicate,and now Playgroupand their first independence looms in January. To quote a well used phrase "Thanks Mum" - we couldn't have done it without your total commitment, and have a Happy Christmas everybody - we will.

ARTS SCENE New sculpture for Shaw Ridge site arrives soon
A large seven foot tall sculpture (a model is pictured below right), by Tim Sandys-Renton will be located on the Shaw Ridge open space, looking down on Ramleaze. The work is presently at the metal foundary and should be position some time in December. Whilst waiting for delivery, Tim wrote a description of his work for The Link. I've not titled the sculpture yet, but it depicts a winged figure. The aeroplanes wing has imprinted on its side the torso of an outsized man (150% over size),

Yet the images of the industrial looking wheels and high-tec aeroplane wing give it the feeling of being contemporary. I feel that one should view them as if from 1,000 years hence, as if looking back on our era with the curtains torn apart and able to see the wood from the trees. NEWS &VIEWS 20 Brownies take fire station tour A group of Brownies from the 2nd Toothill pack spent a happy one and a half hours at Swindon Fire Station in mid November, and could have stayed a lot longer according to their Brown Owl Terry Easey. "I remembered going when I was a Brownie," said Terry. "That visit impressed me and I thought it would fun for the girls. The firemen made us so welcome and were very helpful. They set off a mock incident and sounded the alarm for us."

A local insurance broker is becoming more involved in local fund raising projects to assist good causes. Mansfield Begbie Associates are about to draw the winning ticket in a grand draw fora cricket bat signed by both the Australian and English test teams. The proceeds of around £1,700 will be presented to the Alex Mortimer fund to provide Alex who suffers from cerebral palsy with special education. Recently Mike Rees, a director with Mansfield Begbie who lives in Sparcells, presented the Lollipops Parent and Toddler Group in Shaw with a cheque for £50 to assist them to buy more equipment for their activities.
"We're glad to contribute something back to the community. Its important for local businesses to be involved in this way," explained Mike. "We have now decided to sponsor a major fund raising activity twice a year and our first project for 1990 will be a Grand Draw in aid of equipment for children with disabilities and special needs at Westlea School. We will be printing 5,000 tickets and putting up the prize money." All the details will be provided in next month's Link magazine. In the meantime Mansfield Begbie Associates are going to make Christmas extra special for six children when they enter the colouring competition opposite.
Pizza choices West Swindon pizza eaters will soon be spoilt for choice. Another takeaway and home delivery service is about to be launched and a third will follow in about eight months time. Based at the unit once used by the sports shop in the Town Square at the West Swindon Centre, a Domino's pizza franchise hopes to be making free of charge deliveries from midDecember. "Domino's started 75 years ago in the United States and is the worlds largest homedelivery operation," said franchisee Sigurd Wilburg. "Worldwide there are 5,400 outlets and Domino's is well established in London with about 40 shops. West Swindon is obviously a good market to serve and all being well we should start before Christmas."
Pizzarama at Shaw Village Centre has been delivering pizzas to West Swindon people for nearly two years. Mike Grey, regional manager for the parent company Coach Caterers, commenting on the competition said, "Pizzarama has had a monopoly on pizza deliveries and I believe we have become known and respected for the quality of our product. I feel we have given a good service and have established an excellent relationship with our customers. We'll be doing all we can to maintain it." The Shaw Ridge Leisure Park development includes a Pizzahut restaurant which will also offer a home delivery service. It expects to be up and running by August, well ahead of the rest of the Leisure Park facilities.

No Christmas break for Homeline With Christmas occurring on a Monday, most of the country is likely to shut down on Friday 22nd for nearly a week. However, one service committed to caring for people will be on call without a break. Homeline provides an emergency telephone support service to 1,200 people in the Thamesdown area. Using an ordinary telephone with some modifications, people who live alone or are at risk are in constant contact with a control centre which can alert the emergency services or send out a warden to provide assistance. Homeline co-ordinator Steve Wakefield says the service is on call 365 days a year and is available to owner occupiers and council house tenants. "We answer about 1,000 calls a month, most of which are not emergency. But for example, we lift 20 to 30 people back into bed or their wheelchair and quite often alert the electricity board because of a power failure. Homeline never takes a break." NEWS & VIEWS Schoolwork connects with business Students at Greendown Community School have been tackling two design projects set by local vehicle management company PHH The students have worked on the pieces since the summer term. One class of CDT (Craft, Design and Technology) students had the task of designing the ideal company car for the year 2,000, when they themselves will be 24 or 25. Another class has been producing a range of ceramic 'executive gifts', ranging from paper weights to hand thrown decorative vases bearing the company logo. CDT teacher Leo Norris said the project was harder than the youngsters expected. "They were doing the project as part of the enrichment programme which means they were taking an extra class in their own time. It's the kind of work they will be doing for GCSE in their fifth year." Art Teacher Eric Bullion added, "They've had to get to grips with new materials and craft techniques in ceramics; it's tested their perseverance. The students have also had to understand the importance of presentation.

WestSwindon's superstore is going to become even more attractive claims its manager, who believes that all records will broken this Christmas. Leslie Lloyd, manager of the newly taken over Gateway, reckons that just one year after the superstore was re-launched after an eleven month refit, it's heading for a bumper season. "When I arrived three years ago this site had a monopoly on superstore operations in the town. But even with the opening of two large competitors, we're trading at our best ever level. I think it's because we have the rangeand the products which people want, and because we're so convenient to a large population close-by. "Regardless of what anybody says about an economic downturn, the store is doing very, very well." Looking forward to the changes that will come about as a result of the takeover by Asda, Mr Lloyd said these will be introduced during 1990. "The management and the staff are delighted by the takeover. Asda only operate superstores and hypermarkets, so they know what it requires to run a big operation.

Once the Christmas boom is out of the way, we can get down to planning changes in the goods for sale and the appearance of the store. "The changes need to be gradual to minimise the inconvenience to customers and staff. However I think the customer will be impressed by the Asda range. They have excellent own brand goods and as the largest superstore operator in the country know what the consumer needs." Above: A catch comes in for Tony Skeates West Swindon's Peatmoor Lagoon is providing good fishing for pensioners and people with disabilities, as well as a local site to teach youngsters how to become good anglers. The lagoon, completed in 1988, was first opened to anglers earlier this year. Because of the limited size of the 20 acre lake and the need to manage the fish stock, Thamesdown Council's Recreation Services Committee has limited the chance to fish at the lagoon to youngsters aged from ten to 16, people who are registered disabled or retired. West Swindon Angling Club have the responsibility for managing the fishing platforms and vet applications for membership. Around 150 fifty people have joined the club so far. One enthusiast to re-discover fishing is Tony Skeates from Toothill. "I went fishing as a boy but only started again a few months ago. I have to take it easy because of heart trouble so I come up here most evenings as it gives me something quiet to do." Appeal produces musical response Salt Way School in Middleleaze appealed for a piano player in the last edition of The Link and have been rewarded with the services of policeman Gary Marsh of Shaw, who plays in a rock band when not on the beat. "It's very good of Gary to help us out voluntarily," said headteacher Sue Butcher. "He is helping us rehearse for a carol concert and a dance, singing, movement event called Winter Story which is based on the story of the Christmas tree."

A group of mysterious sprayers is going round West Swindon spraying dog droppings in public places with flourescent paint, to quite literally highlight the problem of getting dogs faeces on your shoes, and on children's hands and clothing. An example of spraying technique is shown below. Members of the group are in touch with national campaigners who are drawing attention to the unhygenic and unpleasant problem of preventing the environment turning into a giant dog toilet. Steve Williams (pictured right) took up the post based at Greendown School vacated by Rod Kensett in October. After working on a project at developing education opportunities for unwaged adults in Swindon, he was attracted by the chance to work at a community level. "Rod has built up a large and varied adult education programme which caters for hundreds of people," said Steve. "But we're all conscious that we may not be attracting certain sections of the population. I think the challenge of my job now is to get to the 'non-traditional' users of adult education, women returning to work, disabled

When Sonja Collict of Westlea saw an article about slimming fora good cause in the September Link she decided to take action. LocalCambridge Diet counsellor Rebecca Clifforde joined up with eight other counsellors to organise the 'Let's get slimmin' Swindon' campaign, a sponsored slim in aid of the Prospect Foundation. During the 28 day slimming campaign, twenty three slimmers lost 2801bs and raised nearly Q,000 for the local hospice for the terminally ill. Altogether Sonja raised ÂŁ421 from 101 sponsors amongst work colleagues at Allied Dunbar and friends at Toothill Church. "Sonja was one of the star performers, loosing 21lbs in a month using Cambridge Diet products," said Rebecca. "When she contacted me she said she had a reason to loose weight and the 'Let's get slimmin Swindon' campaign came along just at the right time. It was an outstanding achievement to raise so much money." A slimmer and fitter Sonja said that she found it quite easy to stick to the diet after the first few days. "It was difficult at first but I was

Fridges, cookers, foodmixers all seen to qualify: even drills and exercise bikes make theChristmas lists. If this is the way you organise your budget, there are one or two pieces of garden equipment worth adding to the list. A garden shredder sounds a bit of a gimmick. Perhaps it seems just an expensive way of reducing garden rubbish to a size convenient for packing into a black plastic bin bag. A better way to consider it is to see the shreddings it produces as a compost kit. They rot down fast into a usable compost that competes with peat and bark as a soil conditioner. It is a machine that pays for itself after a few seasons. However,it can be a lethal machine in the same way a hedge trimmer can be. It does need to be operated responsibly. Safety spectacles together with gardening gloves to protect the hands from flying fragments are essential. The noise level is deafening, so a pair of ear defenders is also desirable. Make sure there is a safety RCB plug or socket used and that unprotected children and adults do not approach too closely. This all makes the shredder sound like a death machine, but the precautions are really just common sense. What to shred? Everything from hedge trimmings to worn out summer bedding. In fact, once you have started shovelling composted shreddings around the garden, you begin to eye hedges and plants as a regular source of desirable compost! There can be problems with such things as rose hips from Rugosa prunings (whose pulp blocks the outlet) and tough branches from

Tony specialises in visiting the home with his equipment and turning it into a studio. "It's very convenient to have a portrait taken in the home. You don't have to dress the children up and take them into town. I find they relax and are happier in their own surroundings." His youngest subject was three months old and he has been taking photographs of families, groups and at functions. Using specialist processing companies, he can produce small card mounted pictures through to large, framed canvas finished prints Tony also has a reputation for copying old photographs without negatives. Recently he returned from an voluntary assignment on Ascension Island where he copied 1,000 photographs in the Historical Society collection, transport provided courtesy of the RAF.
