Suicide charity founder receives Street Auction’s secret prize A well-kept secret was successfully revealed on 2 July in Toothill when resident Jacky Parry was shocked to be named as the winner of a holiday in the Lake District. Makers of a new BBC series which brings neighbours together around a pop-up street auction had visited the area to collect items to sell. Lots of people knew she would benefit from the proceeds of the auction, but the surprise on Jacky’s face was a delight to everybody when TV cameras swung round and presenter Paul Martin announced her name. Swindon Council localities facilitator Gail Light said she had been approached by the BBC to suggest a worthy individual. “I had
nominated Jacky for the Pride of Swindon Award in 2014 for her effort setting up and running Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS). She has done so much to support survivors since her brother took his own life. Jacky is an amazing woman.” Jacky said: “It took me ages to work out that I’d won the prize and that all these people had known about it for weeks. I really didn’t have a clue they were keeping a secret. I even had a long chat to Paul Martin when he was in Toothill collecting auction items. He was so nice when I donated things to sell.” Street Auction will be screened in September. Watch this space for the date.

Swindon Sobs, the charity which helps people deal with the suicide of a loved one, is the first in Britain to start an Engaging Men group. Retired headteacher Steven Carter, whose son took his life in 2011, has developed the programme. He said: “Men find it difficult to talk in a group eye-to-eye. They bottle the questions up and don’t have a way to release the emotions that pile up inside. “Engaging Men is an activity based group where men can talk in their own time, shoulder-to-shoulder.” The new project was launched at
the office of North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson. He said: “It’s vital for people in distressed circumstances to receive the peer to peer support they need in a way which benefits them most effectively.” The first Swindon Sobs Engaging Men event will be football fun day and barbeque hosted by Nationwide on Sunday 14 August. As part of Positive Media Group’s ongoing involvement with local schools, Swindon Link and The Ocelot hosted two students over two seperate weeks in July as part of a work experience scheme, but the team were amazed to find that both students had twin siblings. Highworth Warneford student Emily Bowdidge and Isambard Community School student Paige Warman both joined the PMG team to gain an inside look into the world of journalism, and spent their respective weeks posting
articles online and writing stories for both Swindon Link and The Ocelot magazine. Both then revealed their twins happened to be working elsewhere in Swindon, with Emily’s sister Catherine helping at Swindon 105.5 radio station in Liden, whilst Kayleigh Warman was assisting Swindon Financial Services. Swindon Soup to take place quarterly Swindon Soup is to take place on a quarterly rotation from September. Maps of proposed parish areas released for public viewing Swindon Borough Council has released two maps showing the possible future parish boundaries within the town. The council is currently conducting a Community Governance Review looking at making the whole of the town parished. This follows requests from existing parish councils to review their arrangements. The borough council has also stated that it will no longer be able to afford to pay for some services like grass cutting, street cleaning and playground maintenance by 2020 and has said that it will be up to parishes to take over those duties. A council spokesman said: “In mid June, the council’s cabinet agreed to give people more power over local services by considering the potential of creating parish councils covering the entire borough. “The plans to expand local democracy will ensure that community governance is effective and convenient and reflective of the identities and interests of the local communities in the borough. It will also provide residents with more direct control over services such as street cleaning, litter and dog waste

new parishes. “The fairest and most effective way to create this change, if we must, is to create one Parish for all or most of the unparished area. It can be managed effectively, it will be more democratic and it will stand a better chance to financially safeguard services across the whole town. “A large parish will work best for the borough council and the least
worst for council tax payers. “If residents want to petition in the proper way to create smaller community focused parishes, then there will be opportunity to do this democratically in the future. “No-one, not least the borough council can say that they have the information or the mandate to start slicing up the map at this point because there is not enough community will or engagement.”

The challenge to Swindon people to do more for their communities To paraphrase President John F. Kennedy’s inaugural address 55 years ago: ‘Ask not what Swindon can do for you – ask what you can do for Swindon.’ It was a challenge to a nation, but the question applies to any aspect of society where services are provided or received. And for Swindon Council chief executive John Gilbert, it’s more important than ever in these ever tougher financial times. Looking back on his 35 year career he said local government is now in uncharted territory, and this impacts every council taxpayer. “Thinking back, there was never enough money to achieve what you wanted to do, but when you compare the resources we had then to what we have now after several years of austerity we are in a completely new situation. No one has experience of the profound change we are currently involved with.” Local government has been hit hard since the economic chaos of 2008/09. The Conservative Government elected in 2010 has imposed severe cutbacks which will continue until 2020 whilst increased child protection legislation and the rapidly ageing population requiring extra services has created major problems for delivering local services - and this might be compounded if leaving the European Union has a negative impact on the strength of the British economy. But the changing relationship between councils and the citizens who elect councillors to make decisions on their behalf is something the general public has yet to take on board. People still expect the services they had five or ten years ago and John recognises this continuing disconnect. “Over the last eight years, Swindon Council has saved £120 million from its budget and we have to find around £20 million in savings each year for the next three or four years. With that level of budget reduction, we have to approach service delivery differently now and in the future,” he said. “Only eight years ago over 50 per cent of the budget was spent on universal services - the visible things like grass cutting, litter picking, refuse collection and planning services which people believe they pay their council tax for. This now has to be funded from just 28 per cent of the budget. The council has to spend the majority of its money, the other 72 per cent, on services for vulnerable children and adults - you
could call these invisible services. And as the population grows and continues to age, the financial pressures will become even greater. “People also have to be aware that Government has stated that by 2020 grant funding of local services will be virtually removed altogether by which point nearly 80 per cent of our budget is expected to be spent supporting vulnerable people.” This is where the idea of parishing the parts of the town not already in a parish council area comes in. Swindon Council, prevented by government from raising council taxes without a local referendum, is currently carrying out a Community Governance Review and the council is due to make a decision whether to proceed with parishing in November. So far, the government does not impose a cap on parish councils’ ability to levy a local precept (tax) to fund locally decided services like grass cutting and litter picking. John believes parishing shouldn’t be boiled down to pounds and pence. Almost half of the town is in a parish council which puts decision making about visible services at a local level. It also ensures the money set aside for providing those services is ring-fenced enabling people living in those areas to prioritise what it is spent on and ensure it goes towards the services most important to them. Although change is not to everybody’s liking at first, John says passing on responsibility for deciding how a community spends its budget on local services can have positive benefits. For the last two years, the council has transferred some local services to existing parish councils and says that feedback has shown that residents have seen real improvements in their local area. “From my past experiences I’ve always believed we should be striving for greater engagement with residents to create a better understanding of the situation the council finds itself in and where the budget goes,” he said. “We need to explain the context so that residents will discuss with the council how we can work together to find a solution. I’m the first to say that we don’t have the answers and they are likely to be found out there in the community. “The engagement sessions in June and July aimed to provide opportunities for two way discussions where officers and members explained the financial or legal limitations on the council. Engagement should be open and

transparent so that we can cocreate solutions to continue those local visible services. We’re faced by having to decide to stop doing stuff, do things differently, pay more, or a combination of the three. As much as I would like to use a magic wand, there isn’t one. “I fully appreciate people’s frustration that the council is working to a timetable. We are caught in what I call the perpetual hamster wheel of time where the process of making and balancing a
budget never stops. It’s something we’re unable to slow down so it’s a big challenge to align the system we’re caught in and the expectations of residents. “Unfortunately arguing that if we batten down the hatches and hope the problems will go away isn’t going to work. We can only find solutions if the council made up of elected councillors and officers work together with residents. “It gives all of us hope and helps us shape the future together.”

Community News Campaigner to march on Downing Street Mental health and homelessness campaigner Steve Carr is walking from his home town of Swindon to Downing Street during the first week of September to deliver his findings from across the UK. Steve recently completed a three month walk from Land’s End to John O’Groats, returning on 3 May. During this trek he stopped to speak in Manchester at Business Rocks 2016 and had a curry dinner at Swindon Fire Station as well as celebrating his 40th birthday. Upon his return to Swindon Steve launched his latest venture ‘Mindcanyon’ which aims to combat mental health issues and homelessness in the town, and hopes it will become a one stop portal for anyone dealing with these issues. Steve said: “I am planning to conclude my walk to Downing Street with support from local MPs Robert Buckland and Justin

Broadband masts rejected again at planning committee as fibre providers move in Swindon Borough Council’s planning committee has again rejected applications for the masts required to deliver a 4G broadband network. The scheme, implemented by UKB Networks under a £2m contract from SBC, requires monopoles 15m in height to deliver the wireless broadband signal to homes. The scheme and its mast locations have been the subject of opposition from local campaign group No To Swindon 4G. More recently, Virgin Media and BT Openreach have begun to deliver fibre broadband, including ultrafast fibre to premises in North Swindon as a response to the group’s calls for a future-proof solution. The original plan for masts in the area was made up of five monopole locations across North Swindon. This would have provided service to all the homes in the area by using ‘the most optimal mast sites from a service perspective’ according to UKBN. Swindon Borough Council’s planning committee rejected all the sites at its February meeting. The revised plan for just four mast locations was put before the planning committee in July, with all
rejected again. The No To Swindon 4G group issued the following statement: “Angered by the initial proposals, local residents engaged with UKB to try and find mutually acceptable sites in North Swindon. We are disappointed that the sites chosen in consultation with the local community have been rejected by the planning committee.” Nicholas James, CEO at UKB Networks said: “We are disappointed that the committee decided, by a very narrow majority, to refuse permission for the alternative sites. UKBN has a contract with the council for the Superfast Swindon project and will continue as planned. “In order to ensure that the planning committee decision does not restrict the options for residents, we are in discussion with Swindon Borough Council and BDUK, and will undertake the appropriate next steps to commence the formal planning appeal process for the plan.” Virgin Media has recently announced that it will be bringing their ‘Vivid’ service to Chiseldon, which is currently serviced by existing UKBN 4G masts.

Changes to community facilities considered for Toothill The Toothill Big Local (TBL) committee, which has responsibility for spending a £1 million lottery grant allocated to the area, is putting forward a number of options for enhancing facilities. These include replacing the existing Toothill Community Centre at the village centre with flats, and developing a community centre with licenced bar, an outside floodlit 5-a-side football pitch, basketball court and play park next to Toothill Farmhouse off Bodiam Drive, about 800 metres away. Plans drawn up for TBL by Ensen Design illustrate possible options. The details were revealed in a letter from Toothill ward councillors Jim Robbins, Kevin Small and Steph Exell delivered to residents living close to the farm asking for views. Cllr Robbins said: “We stated that the council should ensure TBL carries out an initial consultation to gauge reaction from people living closest to the farm, but this hasn’t taken place. We strongly believe that those most closely affected should be involved at an early stage. “We believe in improving community facilities in Toothill, so we’re interested to know if residents
are supportive of the proposal and that it is sustainable.” Mick Fletcher, of Warnford Close, said: “I like the idea of more community facilities. Having it near to my home is interesting.” Some people living in houses backing onto the site are not impressed. Michael Browster, of Beverley, said: “I’m fuming about it. The basketball court will be about 25 feet from my back fence; the thought of the constant thumping of balls makes me angry.” In nearby Chepstow Close, Rob Lancaster said: “We moved here in December; the legal search did not show any plans for the farm site, so receiving the councillors’ letter was a shock. The floodlights from the football pitch would shine into the back bedroom; using the garden will be impossible.“ Lisa Corcoran, the licencee of Toothill Community Centre bar, is incensed. “I’m disgusted about all this. I had a call from my mother who received the letter then saw it on Facebook. To see I could be out of a job from Facebook was terrible. “I don’t understand why they’re talking with the council and local councillors before residents.”

In a statement, TBL says: ‘At the heart of this community is the Toothill Community Centre. We have been asked to look at ways of improving the facilities and ensuring that these are sustainable within the available budget. ‘There are several ways of achieving this, from upgrading the existing community centre to replacing this on site at the village centre, or building a new centre elsewhere in Toothill. ‘Included in this would be proposals to utilise existing locations should the community decide to relocate facilities. We are now in the process of costing these to help everyone understand what
the Lottery money could fund. ‘This involves working with construction and planning experts, and with Swindon Borough Council as well as our local councillors. ‘Ultimately, the role of Toothill Big Local is to provide options for the community to evaluate. The decision as to what is chosen is within the hands of the community – every vote counts.’ • Toothill Big Local plan to discuss their ideas at a public meeting on 17 September. Taylor Wimpey submits application for houses next to Lydiard Park National housebuilder Taylor Wimpey has submitted plans to build 48 houses on green fields close to Lydiard Park, beyond Swindon’s western boundary. They would be accessed off Tewkesbury Way but are located in the vale beyond St Mary’s Church and visible from Lydiard Park. The proposals include more than 31 hectares of neighbouring greenfield land owned by Taylor Wimpey to be gifted to Lydiard Tregoze Parish Council for community use, safeguarding it against future development. Steven Neal, senior planning manager for Taylor Wimpey Oxfordshire, said: “Our proposals for land to the south of Tewkesbury Way have been in development for some time, and we have sought to involve Lydiard Tregoze residents and stakeholders throughout this process to ensure that the scheme is in line with the aspirations and priorities of the local community as far as possible. Following extensive public consultation over a period of more than 18 months, we are delighted our planning application has now been submitted to Wiltshire Council for determination later in the year.

“We have worked very hard to prepare a very high-quality residential scheme which we are confident will be an asset to the Lydiard Tregoze community – not least because it will ensure a large area of land is protected as public open space in perpetuity, helping to prevent the coalescence of Lydiard Millicent and Swindon. Taylor Wimpey displayed their proposals to the public at Lydiard House Conference Centre in November 2014 and June 2015. The developer’s project team also consulted Lydiard Tregoze Parish Council, local community groups, elected councillors and other key stakeholders.
Taylor Wimpey has owned the land for over 30 years and repeated attempts to develop it have been rejected. The consultation events in 2014 and 2015 were marked by negative reactions, as well as protests. The announcement that a planning application has been made has sparked further objections. Wiltshire Councillor Mollie Groom, who has led protests against attempts to develop the land over many years, said the parish council had spent a huge amount of time preparing a neighbourhood plan including a housing needs assessment with Wiltshire Council where sustainable development in the middle of the village was agreed
upon. She said: “One hundred percent of residents were against any building between Lydiard Millicent and Swindon. This would be a desecration of a beautiful, historic landscape setting below St Mary’s Church and Lydiard House.” Cllr Caryl Sydney-Smith, Swindon councillor for Freshbrook and The Lydiards, commented: “I am very disappointed to hear of these plans despite the public outcry in the last two years. Swindon and Wiltshire councillors will do their upmost to prevent this going ahead.” Swindon South MP Robert Buckland said: “This is an unwelcome application on the doorstep of Lydiard Park that does not conform with the Wiltshire Local Plan. Local residents have made their concerns very clear. Lydiard is a country park, so any reduction in the rural nature of its surrounding area is unacceptable.” James Gray, MP for North Wiltshire, added: “This land is outside the Core Strategy, and has been refused before. Let battle commence - The bids are in for Lydiard Park and House Five bids have been submitted to Swindon Borough Council to run Lydiard House and Park. They are made up of two community-led proposals and one commercial bid to take over the running of the entire site and two bids interested in just part of the site. The community bids are a staffled bid and a bid by The Lydiard Park Heritage Trust. It is understood that the commercial bid is from Twigmarket who currently run Broome Manor Golf Club. The council agreed in February to invite formal bids to run the park with the aim of reducing the £458,000 annual subsidy. The staff-led bid is made up of the staff management team who said in a statement: “We are passionate about Lydiard, and this is a fantastic opportunity to make Lydiard an even better destination for our visitors, re-investing and developing the offerings for a memorable day out.” The bid is supported by the Akers family, who were instrumental in making Lydiard a public asset after councillor Francis Elliot Akers gifted Lydiard House for the benefit of the community in 1943.
His great-granddaughter Gina Akers said: “We wanted to be sure that a community bid puts the people’s interests first and truly reflects my great-grandfather’s intentions for Lydiard.” Mike Bowden of The Lydiard Park Heritage Trust said: “We are sure that ours is the best bid out there and answers every single one of the criteria put forward by the council. “There has always been massive public support for Lydiard to stay in the hands of a community group rather than a private company. Our bid will ensure that the access, landscape and house are protected for future generations at the same time as making it viable.” The bids will now be scored against a set of criteria by the council and either a preferred bidder will be presented to cabinet, or they will be asked to carry out due diligence on a range of bidders, at its meeting on 7 September. The two community organisations have until 3 August to write a separate letter to the council under the Localism Act to trigger a six-month moratorium that will see the whole process delayed so community organisations can get themselves organised.

Eleven out of 15 libraries in Swindon could be closed by the end of 2017. Swindon Council’s cabinet has put the plans out to consultation in a bid to save £1.5m from the library budget by 2020. According to the council the proposal would see a core library network of four libraries - Central, North, West and Highworth - that would meet 74 per cent of current visits and would ensure that 80 per cent of current library users and 85 per cent of Swindon’s households are within two miles of a library. The 11 other libraries do not fall within the core network so will no longer be funded by June 2017. The council’s cabinet has also approved £500,000 in transitional funding to pay for the one-off costs of viable community-led solutions to keep the threatened libraries open. However, this funding is not available for building costs, public IT networks, staffing or maintenance of book stocks. One option discussed is that alternative venues, companies or groups could choose from a menu of free or paid services to offer in their area, applying for some of the transitional funding to host these services that would then not be hosted within the proposed core network. The council would also provide dedicated resources to support the expansion of volunteering in libraries, the Home Library Service, and any additional forms of volunteering that preserve and enhance access to library services. Cllr Mary Martin, cabinet member for communities, said: “We are extremely fortunate in Swindon to have such a large number of libraries, but with an increasing amount of our budget being spent on vulnerable people we cannot go on as we are.
“The core network proposed in the library strategy will ensure 85 per cent of households will live less than two miles from a library.” However, the plans have been met with anger and condemnation. Save Swindon’s Libraries chair Sarah Church said: “The hard work of the campaign team, campaign supporters and library users and staff has resulted in the recognition of the importance of paid library staff, and in the need for more than one library in the core service. However, this proposal raises a lot of questions and concerns. “The most pressing is the lack of a core library in the southern and eastern areas of Swindon. Furthermore the reliance on supplementing the core service with community-funded projects will be a postcode lottery, with the areas of highest social need most likely to lose out. “Dressing up budget cuts as an opportunity is disingenuous and insulting to residents.” Swindon’s Green Party spokesperson and Wroughton resident Talis Kimberly-Fairbourn said: “Parish councils and community groups had been waiting to hear what options they would be offered, and now it’s clear they have none. “Volunteers and community groups are already stretched to capacity. “Thousands of families will no longer have a library within walking distance.” The Labour group’s shadow lead for libraries, councillor Jim Robbins, said: “Despite instigating a public consultation where almost all the 2,688 people who responded said they wanted to keep Swindon’s library services, the Tory cabinet ignored their message and are pulling funding from most libraries anyway. What was the point in the consultation?”

Design revealed for £21m secondary academy in North Swindon More than 120 parents and children visited a public consultation evening on 20 July to discuss the new Great Western Academy (GWA), in advance of a formal planning application in August. To be built on a 14.5 acre site in the north east sector of Tadpole Garden Village, on land previously allocated for employment, the school will provide teaching and learning space for 1,250 students at secondary level, and also post-16 study. There will be five forms of entries. At present the school will fill up one year at a time which means there will be 150 places available. The academy is sponsored by New College Swindon and if the three storey building is approved by Swindon Council’s planning committee, BAM Construction Ltd, which has been commissioned by the Education Funding Agency (EFA) will deliver the £21 million facility to open in September 2018. Graham Taylor, principal of New College and project lead for the GWA bid, said: “This is an exciting community project which will provide a much-needed, new school for Swindon; the third fastest
growing town in the country. “We aim to prepare learners for further study and the world of work, business and enterprise with a big focus on using IT and digital technologies to do this. “BAM has a great record in the education sector and I believe that they will deliver a fantastic building with the best facilities in the area.” BAM were the lead contractors in the conversion of former Swindon railway works in the town centre to create the town’s University Technical College, UTC Swindon. The design has been developed by award-winning international design practice Scott Brownrigg. It will include state-of-the-art facilities for IT, Science and Maths, Design and Technology and the Creative Arts (Music, Drama and Dance). At the consultation event, parent Carla Barker said: “The designs look impressive and the New College vision for education in the future is very interesting. year old Nathan enters secondary school in 2018 and Mae will be leaving primary school two years later.” There will be no catchment area under free school admission rules. GWA will publish its admission criteria in 2017.

Bid to open another primary school On the back of their successful bid for a secondary school, and with encouragement from North Swindon MP Justin Tomlinson, New College Swindon is leading a partnership to submit an application for a primary school adjacent to Great Western Academy (GWA) at Tadpole Garden Village. Using Swindon Council population data, there is a predicted shortage of primary school places in Swindon because of population growth and new housing developments. Being located next to GWA, the primary pupils will be able to share and access resources to enrich their teaching and learning. If the bid to the Education Funding Agency is successful, Great Western Primary will open in September 2019.

Highly regarded head takes off for USA experience Dale Burr, the popular, first-ever, headteacher of Oakhurst Primary School has set off on his travels again to take up a headship of an international school following the British primary curriculum in Chicago. Originally from Australia, Dale visited the UK on holiday in 1995 and stayed, bringing his breezy optimism and bright attitude to Westlea Primary School where he completed British teaching qualifications. He then moved onto Brook Field primary before taking up a deputy headship in Calne followed by a headteacher role at Minety. In September 2009 Dale opened Oakhurst with two teachers and 32 children in a portacabin for a year in a corner of the site, whilst building works took place in the background. Now there are 480 pupils. “A colleague told me there’s nothing like opening a brand new school to create a shared ethos, and she was right,” said Dale. “I really enjoyed the family atmosphere at Minety and I wanted Oakhurst to have that village school feeling. “For me, being as visible as possible has been the key, welcoming pupils and parents at the start of the day, spending time in the playground, going in and out of classrooms and even serving homemade scones and cream at a monthly parents get together. It’s all about letting parents and children know that the school is a place where we all work together to support and respect each other. “I also wanted children to learn about the world around them and how other people across the planet live.” Under Dale’s guidance the school blurred the distinction between

year groups so, for example, nursery and reception children are mixed, in order to create a flexible environment for children. “I’m a big believer in giving children opportunities and experiences. If we in schools give them exposure to lots of different things, whether it’s music, art or sport alongside traditional subjects, hopefully we will trigger passion and enthusiasm for learning to take to secondary school.” Now Dale is taking his undoubted enthusiasm to a private school in Chicago. He said: “I did a 15 month secondment with Ofsted in 2013 and I started thinking of new challenges when I returned. A friend told me about the international school network and the expansion of the Nord Anglia group in America. I applied and to my surprise they took me on. “The British School of Chicago at Lincoln Park has 520 places for children aged two to eleven, spread
over five floors and a playground on the flat roof. As a fee paying school with British qualified teachers there will certainly be differences like smaller classes and a large number of teachers. “But I will be taking all the great experiences from Oakhurst with me and I will certainly be doing all I can to involve parents in their children’s education.”

Brook Field Primary School in West Swindon celebrated their Junior Good Citizen award win during July after being presented with their certificate and 25th anniversary shield by PCSO Mandi Coles and Dorset and Wiltshire Fire Service representative Deborah Lowe. The annual Junior Good Citizen engages young people in a fun and safe learning environment to equip them with the skills they need as they make their transition from primary to secondary education. This year more than 1,600 Swindon schoolchildren took part. The Year
6 pupils at the school have been learning skills such as staying safe online, railway, fire, road and personal safety and weapons awareness. Year 6 teacher Hannah Grant said: “It’s a great achievement for the children, and they’ve excelled at all the activities involved in the award programme. Their excellent listening skills, patience and hard work have really paid off. Having the emergency services here also strengthens their trust if they are ever in need of calling upon them in later life.”

Places at playgroup after transfer from Link Centre to Toothill Farm Link and Learn Pre-School has said good-bye to Link Centre after 21 years and will reopen at Toothill Farm in September. But due to uncertainty about the group’s future over the last few months, there are lots of spaces available for under 5’s. Playgroup supervisor Gilly Betts said the team were relieved that the group is able to continue in West Swindon. “Toothill Farm is a nice venue which hosted a pre-school in the past. It’s going to be lovely for children to have access to a real garden which we’ve never had as we were located on the upper floor

Family News August: Starting School Information and advice for parents from ePIP ePiP parenting expert Lorraine writes: When a child starts school or nursery for the first time, it can be an exciting and nerve-wracking time for all involved. Handing your child over to their teacher and waving goodbye can be stressful and emotional. How will my child cope? What does the teacher need to know? Will they settle in and make new friends? There are ways to make this transition easier for you and your child. Our top tips include: • Visit the school with your child and talk positively about what they will be doing there. • Read books together about starting school. • Arrange play dates with other children going to the same school. • Attend parent teacher talks, ask questions and talk to the teacher about your worries. • Take your child to any summer play sessions the school organises. • Use toddler groups to get your child used to mixing and playing with other children.
• Plan and practice ‘getting ready for school’ in the morning, to help establish a routine. • Plan and practice the journey to school to test travel routes and work out timings. • Stick timetables to the fridge, including information on who is collecting on which days. • As a family, talk positively about school, about making new friends, having fun and learning new things. If you do feel quite emotional; try not to let your child see you get too upset about leaving them at school for the first time. If possible, arrange something to keep you occupied immediately after dropping them off. Starting school is a key milestone, a time to be proud of the steps and progress your child is making. Spitfire sculpture at Orbital Shopping Park to celebrate Swindon aviation heritage in association with
The Orbital Shopping Park in North Swindon has submitted an application to the council for a new sculpture celebrating the town’s aviation heritage in the shape of a Spitfire wing by Mike Pringle. The application includes the sculpture, outlying plant arrangements with seating and an additional seating area close to the bus stop as part of the ongoing renovation works on the site. Students from Isambard Community School have been directly involved with the project, creating designs that will be put into paving slabs surrounding the sculpture that has been designed to resemble a Spitfire wing. Mike Pringle said: “What’s really exciting for me about this sculptural art work is that it really is driven by what’s important about Swindon’s past. Most people know of the town’s illustrious railway heritage, but the Orbital has decided to highlight the aviation history that many people know very little about. I particularly think the inclusion of poems and artwork provided by local schoolchildren from Haydon Wick and Haydon Leigh Primary schools and Isambard School is a key point of the work. It gives them something to be proud of in their town, historically and today. “The figures in the middle of the wing include Harold Starr, a Second World War Hurricane pilot from
Swindon who was killed in the Battle of Britain, and another figure representing the many women who built the aircraft. “The outlying planters and seating that will be placed around the sculpture will be laid out in a five pointed star, evoking the five bladed propeller seen on the Mk21 Spitfires, built in South Marston from 1943 to 1949 on the site of the modern day Honda factory.” Mr Sanghera, head of art at Isambard, was particularly pleased with the way their Year 8 students faced the design challenge, their exploration of materials and the work they produced to go alongside the Spitfire wing centrepiece. He said: “Students will now complete the paper cuts and Dr Pringle will visit again to explore the possibility of some of them being turned into inlay pavements at the Orbital. This was a great example of the links between art and industry and the power of creativity. The students did us proud.”

Town centre to see massive regeneration boost from purpose built museum and art gallery Hadrian Ellory-van Dekker, the new director appointed to drive the project to build a museum and art gallery in Swindon has explained the benefits of locating it on the site between the Wyvern Theatre and the magistrates court, and when he wants it to begin. Town’s largest community event in Swindon175 year
More than 5,000 people attended the Swindon Mechanics Institute Trust Children’s Fete on 9 July in GWR Park to mark the 150th anniversary since it first took place in 1866 in the very same venue. It was held every year until 1939, with a break for World War I. The Mechanics Institute Trust revived the tradition in 2002 and have held several fetes since then. But according to trust chair Daniel Rose, 2016 was not a year to be missed. “Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund and local sponsors, a small organising team and lots of volunteers, we were able to put on a great free event that brought together families from all areas of the town, as well as a range of community organisations, to celebrate an important part of Swindon’s heritage. “And we sustained the tradition of giving cake to every child.”

The Great Western Railway had a limited input to helping its staff and their families make a life for themselves here. It was largely the workers themselves who quickly set up mutual support organisations to provide for common interests, education and entertainment, most of which were centred around the
Daniel Gooch: Life and Legacy
A new exhibition at Steam Museum marking 200 years since the birth of Sir Daniel Gooch, the GWR’s first Locomotive Superintendent. In 1840, he wrote a letter to Isambard Kingdom Brunel, outlining why he thought Swindon was the ideal place to base the Great Western Railway’s engine repair facility. A year later, GWR directors gave the go-ahead for the now, world famous, Swindon Works. Explore the fascinating life and work of this remarkable engineer through objects, documents and photographs. After receiving two Pride of Swindon awards in April this year, the Swindon Mela organising team Registered Charity Number: 280093 has announced that one of the town’s best attended events will again take place in Town Gardens in Old Town on Saturday 13 August. 13/03/2015 14:19:15 Entertainment at the festival includes dancing displays and music as well as food stalls. Sonny Hamid, of the Mela planning committee said: “The planning process over the past year has been very challenging with many small and large issues that have had to be faced but we are pleased to say that with much hard work by the team and positive contribution by all of our stakeholders, we have managed to overcome all hurdles that confronted us and we continue to make good progress on all fronts. “Our team has been enlarged by the appointment of a new event manager Duncan Thompson from Production78 who is an extremely experienced professional with much know-how gained from managing several other Melas and specialist events in other parts of the UK. “With his assistance and advice we have made rapid progress in preparing a new and more efficient Safety and Security Management Plan all of which has aided us immensely in getting the 2016 Mela off to a promising start.” The Mela team have been taking applications from local businesses and groups to host stalls and activities, but the event is still in
need of volunteers to assist on the day. Sponsorship and partnering opportunities are also available. If you or your organisation would like to participate in the Mela contact info@swindonmela.com for more information and application forms. Plans for the 2016 Mela include more performances by local artists especially the younger generation. Mela are also planning to include professional head-line acts with all of the performances happening in the Bowl area of the Old Town Gardens, which should help to reduce crowding. “As always, we are continuing our efforts to ensure the event is an environmentally-friendly one and are actively seeking ways of making this year’s Mela even greener.” added Sonny. “Typically, we are working together with Thamesdown Transport and actively discouraging the use of cars to access the event. Mum writes book about DNA for primary children The expression ‘in the DNA’ has entered everyday language, but a West Swindon mum of two has written a book for primary age children which spells out what DNA is about, without using scientific references. The Dinky Amigos are the creation of Lisa Mullan and she will officially launch it at Swindon Central Library on 12 August, 11am. Lisa, who has a PhD. in Biochemistry, said: “I’ve told the story through colourful illustration and rhyme, where children follow Alina, Gina, Tristan and Crispin, who are on a journey to a dance in order to find new friends to rebuild their home. “For young readers it’s an adventure story book, but the story and the pictures are scientifically accurate so it can also be used in the GCSE classroom and beyond as an easy-to-digest approach to the science of DNA. “The story mirrors the journey taken by our genetic material during cell division. Hidden within the design of each page is information on the scientific course of events. A brief explanation of this is included at the back of the

book for interested parents or older siblings, which can be expanded upon by teaching professionals. “My idea is to expose young children to the shapes, maths and science of DNA in the tradition of ‘learning through play,’ before formal teaching begins at a later stage.” Currently the book is available in Swindon Central library, on Amazon and in various local bookshops. It
will also be available to buy at a reduced price on the day of the launch when Lisa will be reading the story. Swindon based cycling challenger James Stewart has now raised over £3000 for his chosen charity Reverse Rett after cycling unassisted from Swindon to the most southern point of Sicily; Portopalo Di Capo Passero. Having set out on 23 May, James completed his journey to Sicily on 5 June having cycled more combined miles than the modern day Tour De France and in as many days, and then decided to continue on his final day to Malta. On his JustGiving page, James said: “I have always wanted to do something for charity, but I knew it had to be for a cause I felt passionate about. The challenge had to be something more extreme than anything I’d done before, both physically and mentally. “I have a 32 year old sister called Angela, who from birth has suffered from a cruel neurological disorder that has trapped her inside her own body, known as Rett Syndrome.” Having aimed to raise £2300 for Reverse Rett, the charity dedicated to research and treatment of Rett Syndrome, as the Link went to press James had raised £3009.68 with over 100 donations to his cause.

The TrustSTFC board continued to meet over the close season and there are some great plans for the year ahead. We’ve been discussing ideas with the North Wilts Youth Football League and local schools for quite some time now, and we continued this with Adam Wainwright from Swindon Town, and also representatives of STFC Football In The Community. The main objective is to find a way to engage the young families of Swindon with their local professional football team, and the vehicle for that will be the new Pro Red scheme, which we will be promoting throughout schools later in the year. We’ve now officially launched the scheme, and have people signing up every day, so there’s no need to delay matters. If you’re the parent of a youngster, please take a look at the registration site and sign your family up: www.pro-red.co.uk
The scheme enables parents of Wiltshire schoolchildren and youth footballers to get reduced price tickets to Swindon Town home matches, thus encouraging more familes along to the County Ground. Also the club or school they associate with will get cashback based on tickets sold through this process. This is a great project that is all about the long-term. There are around 5,000 football mad kids who play in the North Wilts league every Sunday and tens of thousands of kids in Swindon and Wiltshire at school, so these are an obvious target as future Town supporters. Strange goings on as cycle group opposes cycle lane in Covingham as not best use of money On two wheels by Rob Derry of Swindon Bicycle Users Group (BUG)
This may come as a surprise to some but Swindon BUG have opposed the building of a new shared cycle/ pedestrian path in Covingham. That sounds like MPs voting against a pay-rise for themselves doesn’t it? The council opened up a consultation about building a new path to run along the northern side of Covingham Drive. In their defence, the up-side was that it was forward planning for the eventual Eastern Villages development and BUG is very much a supporter of putting infrastructure in place before building the houses. However, we asked ourselves two important questions as we looked at the plans and spoke to officials from the council. 1) Will this make cycling better and safer for existing cyclists and 2) Will it encourage more people to cycle? We had to say that the answer to both of these questions was ‘no’. The cost was £660,000 and is coming from the money recently secured from central government
to provide infrastructure to support the new development east of the A419 so you may start to realise why we oppose it. There will be work done on building an Eastern Flyer from The White Hart roundabout into town using Oxford Road, Drakes Way and other existing paths. Our preference would be to make sure that this route is as good as it can be so diverting funds away to Covingham Drive would be detrimental to this scheme. Also, we believe that money could be spent on lots of small projects at various junctions and other pinch points around Swindon to make cycling even safer for more people. Silver award makes Slimming World consultant a shining example Weight-loss expert Heather Clark has re-achieved her sparkling silver award for the work she does in helping more than 100 people in North Swindon to lose weight every week. Slimming World operates a quality of service to members award scheme based on a range of measures and Heather, who runs groups in Taw Hill and Redhouse, has retained Silver status because of her success in supporting group members to reach their target weight, improve their health and change their lives through ongoing encouragement. It’s the fifth time she has been awarded the prize since becoming a consultant in April 2010. In addition to holding her two groups, energetic Heather is also a Slimming World team developer, with a group of consultants working with her to run 25 groups each week. Swindon175 in association with MINI Plant Swindon staged a unique event on Saturday 9 July when an impressive collection of 60 classic cars, paraded around the town’s world famous Magic Roundabout. All the cars in the Magic Wheels of Steam day contained body panels pressed at the BMW Group MINI Plant in Swindon, formerly known as Pressed Steel, which is celebrating its sixtieth anniversary in 2016. More than 100 people were up early to watched the choreographed cavalcade of Minis, Rovers, Triumphs, Rolls Royce, Morris, Austins, Rileys, an AC, Jaguars and Land Rovers from 7am, on the multiple islands that make the Magic Roundabout so unique. After traversing the roundabout

several times, the vehicles set off in convoy with a police escort for Steam Museum at Churchward where the drivers lined the cars up for a static display. Motoring skills of a different kind were on show at the Magic Roundabout later in July when drifting star ‘Mad’ Mike Whiddett slid his specially modified Mazda RX-8 drift car, nicknamed ‘BadBul’, around the iconic junction in the early hours for a Swindon175 publicity stunt, in conjunction with the Austrian drinks giant Red Bull. The dawn chorus usually associated with the quiet end of Swindon was replaced with revving engines and burning rubber as Whiddett showcased his skills for the assembled media. During his stellar career, Mad Mike has drifted a car up a mountain

range in his native New Zealand and powerslid across a frozen lake in Japan. Now he’s added yet another major feat onto his CV by becoming the first ever person to drift a car around the iconic, labyrinthine roundabout. Mike’s challenge was to burst onto the Magic Roundabout at high speed and then artfully drive his way through the landmark’s various obstacles, including traffic islands, drains and elevation changes. After negotiating the roads sideways, Mike said: “This is one of the craziest roundabouts I’ve ever discovered. “This place is crazy, there are so many islands and obstacles. It’s a real challenge to come flying into this roundabout as fast as we can, drift around it and then head straight back out the other side.”

Success in battle for safe road in Grange Park Youngsters attending Tregoze Primary School now have a safer route to school thanks to the persistence of parent Tracey Boxall and others who pressed local councillors and Robert Buckland MP for action by Swindon Council. A zebra crossing was completed in mid-July just before the end of term. Tracey said: “It’s been 28 months since I started a petition amongst parents to get the council to take the dangers of Hay Lane seriously. The volume of vehicles using the road has grown massively over the last few years because more drivers are trying to take short cuts through residential areas away from main roads. “I’m delighted to see the crossing completed at last and I’d like to thank Tregoze pupil Reggie White for writing such a nice thank you letter.” Robert Buckland MP said he was equally delighted. “After joining

My view would be stick to the petrol engines and still get well over forty miles to the gallon delivered in an entertaining way. If the Mazda CX-3 has an issue it is practicality. It does not provide enough room in the back and the boot, whilst adequate, really is not big enough for a family. It does however offer a little extra space thanks to a secret compartment. No matter which model you choose, you get solid construction, quality materials, excellent design and a good driving experience.

West Swindon open garden weekend raises over £1,000 for SMASH
Professor’s view of Swindon’s great green heritage
West Swindon’s annual open garden weekend, which saw 15 households in the Nine Elms and Old Shaw Lane area showing off their hard work in mid-June, raised £1,680 in aid of SMASH - Swindon Youth Mentoring and CALM - Swindon children’s cancer and leukaemia movement. Event coordinator Kevin Fisher, chair of Shaw Residents’ Association, said: “Despite cool weather and the ever present threat of rain over the two days, just over 200 people visited and there were lots of compliments. “We’ve received letters of appreciation from the two charities and I’d like to publicly thank all the volunteers who opened their gardens for their efforts, together with the hundreds of people who supported the event”
Dr Patrick Harding, an expert on Britain’s flora and fauna, has commented on the green wealth Swindon has, after visiting Coate Water and Peatmoor Community Woodland in early July. Dr Harding lectures on the UK’s fungi, flowers and trees at Cambridge, Oxford and Sheffield Universities as well as appearing on TV to interpret British history through its changing landscape. Leading a weekend course on trees at Lower Shaw Farm, Patrick said the arboretum at Coate Water is ‘one of the the best he has seen, even including the Cambridge Botanical Garden.’ Visiting Peatmoor Copse with course members, he said he was impressed by the range of trees and plants to be found there and also the age of the site. The copse is understood to be a fragment of the ancient Bradon Forest, a royal hunting ground that covered north Wiltshire. He said: “If it is as old as I think it could be, it means this little patch of wood can be regarded as ‘ancient woodland,’ a remnant of the virgin forests that repopulated the land
Swindon team prepares for channel A team of six swimmers including Bethan Sowden and Lyndsey Adamson from Swindon, will attempt to relay swim the English Channel in aid of the Aspire spinal injuries charity on 17 August. To help, Beth and Lyndsey have been engaged in fundraising activities throughout the months leading up to the challenge, including an event at Bengal Square in Roughmoor village centre on 1 August. Having already raised over £2900 the team hope to reach their £3500 target before diving in to the channel. Bethan is no stranger to the channel crossing, having attempted twice already, successfully
completing a team swim in 2012. Bethan said: “We had our last training weekend on 10 July, we had some tough conditions that weekend; the sea was extremely choppy but we all managed to cope. “The next time the team will be together is when we get the call to go which will be any day from 17 August.” Aspire provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by spinal cord injury, supporting them from injury to independence. This is especially relevant for all us Swindon residents with our heavy clay just under the surface. If you set about digging a hole for a fence post with a regular spade you will inevitably dig out more material than necessary due to the angles you need to dig at. You’ll also probably snap the handle or bend the blade. And, above all, you are likely to come away with back ache and blisters. We would recommend hiring a petrol driven post hole borer. The hole produced by the auger will be neat and accurate meaning less wastage if backfilling with concrete. The one man auger can handle a 200mm bit whilst the two man auger comes with a 280mm auger or 200mm auger. If the ground is particularly tough or heavy then the two man auger with the smaller bit would be a good option although the required dimension of the hole will dictate what is required.
