cock said global citizenship was a major issue at Peatmoor, arising from the close links developed with Dihlabeng School in South Africa. "We held our own demonstration to show support for a better deal for poorer countries." Two campaigners for animal and human rights, the environment and Third World issues, from Toothill, joined thousands of others in Edinburgh to make their views heard before the G8 conference in July.

He praised the Tube staff for the calm way they worked and the assistance given to the people evacuated to ground level. Dazed and covered in dust, Steve was able to contact his wife and his employer before the mobile networks were shut down, and was then checked over in a make-shift medical centre. He made his way to Paddington Station to take the train back to Swindon and says he has not suffered any ill effects, though he has experienced flashbacks when he

More houses aimed at borders of West and North Swindon. Development plans for fields on the edge of Swindon are being debated at a Local Plan Inquiry in Chippenham. It could mean hundreds of new houses being attached to West and North Swindon.

The Examination in Public of the Wiltshire and Swindon Structure Plan recommended last year that land should be provided to the

' west of Swindon' for another 1,250 homes. As the town has developed to its current boundaries, house

builders have put forward sites in North Wiltshire for consideration at a public inquiry into the North Wiltshire Local Plan. They include: • Moredon Bridge: the fields south of Purton Road, between the railway line and the River Ray; • Ridgeway Farm: north of Purton Road and Peatmoor; • The fields between Lydiard Park, The Prinnells and Middleleaze. Keeping Front Garden green In advance of a start on building 4,500 homes on Swindon's Front Garden between Old Town and the M4, developers Taylor Woodrow have committed £15 million to environmental protection and improvements to include: • 4 kilometres of canal, much of which will be managed to create new habitats for water voles and other aquatic species and birds; • 73.6 hectare country park and wildlife corridors through the housing areas to link key areas for nature conservation; • routes for horses, cyclists and walkers throughout the area; • planting over 130,000 trees; • new hedgerows and the improvements to existing hedgerows not removed by development; • restoration of 50 hectares of grassland to encourage fl ora and fauna and improve biodiversity, like putting up heated bat barns and bird boxes and digging new ponds for great crested newts. Around 50 per cent of the 309 hectare Front Garden will remain as open space. Construction work is scheduled to begin in October. Some of the money will be spent on improving land south of the M4. Charlie Jarvis, the feisty seven year old from Greenmeadow who touched the hearts of so many people across Swindon, lost her battle against cancer on 24 June. In August 2001 she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer. With little encouragement from UK specialists, her parents Paul and Samantha set out to find help by scouring the internet.

They discovered the possibility of treatment with new drugs from the USA and massive public support helped them obtain the medication for Charlie in August 2003. There has been an annual Get Active day in the town for several years, but now activity is going to be part of Swindon life throughout the year. A fitness team is being appointed to: • concentrate on how more physical activity could take place in and around the workplace; • develop family activity based on getting out and enjoying the Great Western Community Forest; • initiate projects for vulnerable people. When the team is in place, programmes will include: • participation events for groups like after-school clubs and children cared for by the council; • lowcostorfreebusservicesduring holidays to make it easier to access Swindon leisure centres; • encouragement of walking and cycling groups, and dog walker get-togethers; • community based pre-school gym activity; • developing green gyms across the community forest as an alternative to wandering around shopping centres; • setting up befriending services with people who are overweight and have lost the motivation or confidence to take exercise. There will also be small grants available to community groups to run sports and activity events at a neighbourhood level. Active Swindon coordinator Gladys Barr said, "the Government wants 50 per cent of the population to take 30 minutes activity at least five times a week by 2020. "To meet national targets, each year one per cent of Swindon people need to take more exercise. This can include everyday activities like leaving the car at home and walking to school with the children. This is around 7,300 more people getting active and staying with it. "It's great that the Olympics are coming. There are going to be lots of projects to get Britain fit and healthy ready for the world to take notice."

The campaign will be launched at the Swindon Get Active Day on 14 September. An outside consultancy will be monitoring performance to ensure that targets are being met. Daryl Back of One From The Heart Productions, who produced last year's acclaimed show Jack & The Beanstalk, says she wants Peter Pan to be memorable for every child who attends, and also for their parents and carers. "This is going to be the most spectacular pantomime Swindon has ever seen. But to make it special we are carrying out a huge hunt for four extremely talented boys to take turns to play the roles of John and Michael to help Peter Pan and his band of Lost Boys to defeat the villainous Captain Hook. "They will fly ' , with Wendy to Neverland to build

Setting the scene for Priory Vale's schools In September 2006, a suite of schools will open in the Learning Campus and Haydon End area of Priory Vale. Steve Tilling reports on how Swindon's new seat of learning is taking shape. It's difficult to believe that Priory Vale welcomed its first residents just three years ago. Since then, the north Swindon development has blossomed into a thriving community in its own right. With this growth comes a need for local schools and facilities, which will be met over the next two years and beyond. In April this year, Swindon Borough Council officially appointed Equion â&#x20AC;&#x201D; an awardwinning division of John Laing plc specialising in Private Finance Initiative (PFI) projects â&#x20AC;&#x201D; to design, build, finance and operate Priory Vale's forthcoming schools. Comprising one secondary school, two primary schools and two relocated special schools, the establishments will offer places for over 2,000 children in the Priory Vale area. Each school in the Priory Vale development, except one primary school situated in Haydon End, will form part of the area's forthcoming state-of-the-art Learning Campus. International construction group, Laing O'Rourke, has commenced work and most of the schools are scheduled to open in September 2006, with the mainstream secondary school opening in September 2007. Sarah Hudd, operations manager from Equion, couldn't be more excited about the project. "The schools and the Learning Campus promise to offer Priory Vale's truly exceptional residents facilities," she began.

"Every school in the Campus and beyond will be a self-contained environment providing a wealth of educational offerings. Yet, its unique design also promotes shared resources between schools, such as art and drama facilities, kitchens, halls and health services. The Learning Campus will play host to many amenities for pupils and the community, including sports fields, a youth centre, hydrotherapy pool and therapy centre." As Sarah explained, Equion has left no stone unturned in its quest to deliver the finest possible environment: "From the beginning, our plans have focused on creating a landmark location that is attractive and inspiring. While it will complement the traditional architecture of the Priory Vale Village Centre, the Campus will introduce contemporary design themes, for example, over-sailing roofs and a circular drum entrance leading onto the School Square. Once inside, pupils and visitors will discover a pleasing natural environment with flora and open spaces, works of art, and

Equion has also considered the countless practical details necessary for ensuring the facilities run smoothly. According to the plans, each school will enjoy sufficient parking spaces, cycle and pedestrian routes, and security measures. "Security is an important consideration," confirmed Sarah. " At this stage, we know that the Campus will feature unobtrusive CCTV cameras, perimeter fencing, demarcation fences and 24-hour manned security. Throughout, we'll ensure the measures protect while avoiding an people oppressive atmosphere." Sarah believes the Learning Campus will provide much more than a centre of education. "From offering high-tech classrooms, sports equipment and halls to working with experts to provide the special schools with the latest learning tools, we'll ensure each establishment caters for a variety of needs," she said. "The community facilities will also he available to residents. Whether people want to use the health services, brush up on their computer skills, hire halls for events or music rooms for band practices, they can book them all through the Campus' managers: Equion Facilities Management. "I'm convinced that not only will the schools and Learning Campus

deliver improved educational facilities, but they will also become a community focal point and a source of great civic pride." The North Swindon Development Company (NSDC), a consortium charged with the task of developing Priory Vale, has also played a large part in the project's progress. "Under the original planning agreement, we were obliged to release land for schools once Priory Vale had a certain number of properties," said Mike Christmas from the NSDC. "When Swindon Borough Council chose to pursue a PFI route, we helped by releasing the land early for work to begin. I'm in no doubt that the facilities in Priory Vale's schools will help inspire, educate and strengthen the entire community." Produced in association with:

Governors have great plans for new secondary school

It's been a long time coming but at last the opening of a secondary school within the North Swindon expansion area is a reality - and children about to start Year 5 in

September will be given the opportunity to go there. Most of the publicity about the new schools in North Swindon has focused

on

the

tortuous

negotiations to secure Government approval for the Private Funding Initiative, followed by the process of identifying the company to build and run the schools. But, in the background and

unknown to most, a stalwart group of North Swindon residents have been involved as temporary governors. It's not been without frustration explained chair of

governors Neil Askins, who lives in Abbe y Meads. "We've been engaged with the project for over three years, ensuring that the voice of the community was heard in the negotiations about finance and also in the design of the school. "It was a considerable disappointment when the council decided to delay opening SI from September 2006 until September 2007, but that's behind us. Now that construction has started the governors have a major role in preparing for the opening. " We'll be deciding the direction of the school, whether there should be a uniform or not, choosing a name, looking at the possibility of opening with specialist status already in place, and appointing a headteacher to start in September 2006. It's a major task, and we're looking for more people to join the governing body to work through these issues." Temporary governor Helen Miah, from St Andrew's Ridge, believes that the decisions being made now will have a profound i mpact on the future education of North Swindon children. "Our role is to ensure parents have a clear idea of what will he on offer

at Si. We are also conscious that the school will be central to the development of our community. "All the children who go to the school will be special but the first Year 7 intake, will be pioneers; they will have an absolutely unique opportunity to create the school of the future. It's very exciting and the governors want to involve them in that process." " They will certainly get a lot of attention from the staff committed to making SI a success from the outset; a lot of responsibility will be placed on them." Building seven new schools at the same time under PFI arrangements is a brand new concept for Swindon Council, whilst opening a campus of four schools providing education for 4 to 16 year olds, alongside provision for special educational needs, presents major challenges. It means the governors have to do things differently. With a private company managing and maintaining the schools, as well as providing catering, for the next twenty five years, governors and staff will be able to concentrate their attention on developing

"The secondary school will deliver the national curriculum but we want to be at the leading edge of provision, using technology to access the curriculum from home as well as in school. " With extended schools much in the news, the governors have secured use of the premises from Sam to 6pm before the facilities are turned over to communit y use. This extra time gives excellent opportunities to provide an enriched curriculum for pupils. "Creating strong links with the campus primary school and the special schools on site is going to be important in developing education right across the spectrum of age and ability. Although it's some time before the headteacher arrives, the

governors also want to start building partnerships with the children and parents at existing primary schools across North Swindon." Swindon is exporting its sports facility management talent to other parts of the country with the departure of Alan Seabrook from Link Centre. After 16 years heading up the ice rink facilities at Link, Alan has been head hunted to be general

manager of the ice rink in the Lee Valley Park sports city in East London. The London Olympic Games 2012 will be centred on the park, and the ice rink features in the UK bid to host the Ice Figure World Championships in 2008. Training the next Moonwalkers Swindon's women are famed for turning out in large numbers for the annual London overnight marathon moonwalk in aid of Breakthrough Breast Cancer. First youth award goes to West anti-bully action group Swindon Council's new youth services Youth Action Award was presented to a group of youngsters from Greendown School by the Mayor of Swindon, Ray Fisher, at a Youth Action morning on 5 July.

Councillor Fisher said he and his father used to be called 'lanky' or'fish' when they were at school, "It was a mild form of verbal abuse you might say, but name calling demeans the individual and does not recognise that person's worth whether at school or work. "In those days parents and teachers used to tell you to live with it, and it did me no lasting damage, but name calling and physical abuse is part of a cycle of denigration which can leave long term effects for some people and tragic consequences for a few if bullying goes to its extremes. "I'm glad teachers are dealing with bullying nowadays and working with children to understand the effects." The Greendown pupils who have set up GAB - Greendown Against Bullying - have spent lunch breaks and after school sessions learning more about bullying and planning how they are going to meet it head on. They received a grant of £528

from the Wiltshire Police Crimebeat fund to pay for publicity and a representative from Child Line to run workshops on bullying. Rabiah Saleh, in Year 8, said "pupils can be stereotyped at school and made to feel shut out of groups. In September we will be putting up posters to advertise GAB and will offer peer counselling to anybody who feels upset or left out. We're also going to run a support group so that other pupils can feel included in school activities." Fellow group member Sam Kearns said, "it's really great to be the first winners of the youth award. It's a big group and we've worked hard together to understand all the different kinds of bullying. Now we're going to try and help other students." Open Gardens boost for Breakthrough

Terry Barrow from Toothill has hit on a new way to help groups raise money. :I He is collecting pin badges to mount on a blazer in the style of a modern day pearly king. Terry is appealing to readers for pins. He has about 250 so far, but wants a lot more to make an impressive display before lending out the blazer as a 'guess the number' fundraiser. He also needs a tailor's dummy on which to hang the blazer as it will be unwearable with all the pins he wants to mount on it. A campaign, mounted by Karen Kelly and neighbours in Moredon, has been successful in getting 02 to take down a mobile phone mast just 45 metres away from her home. It seems from your reports that some people are taking to recycling and others are not. For the latter, are there some genuine obstacles? More space is needed to store waste for recycling as many West Swindon homes have limited space. On the other hand, households that have started recycling may

have some good ideas on how to make it work. I suggest that the council should carry out a small survey of households to get the views of people in different areas and types of housing in West Swindon. It's great that Asda wants to encourage recycling. But I have a question for them: how much food packaging is recyclable?
