Family returns to Shaw committed to community development After two years of inactivity, Swindon's green oasis in an urban landscape is under new management. Matt Holland and Andrea Hirsch and their three children, right, have returned to put life into the Lower Shaw Farm Centre. The weeds will be cut back and buildings put in order, and a programme of courses and events is to be developed. Six contenders stretched their vocal chords for the benefit of the crowds in Town Gardens as part of the Old Town Festival on Sunday 15 July. Fred Ferris from Penhill was chosen after the judges including the Mayor of Swindon and town criers from Wootton Bassett and Bristol were impressed by his clear cry of a short prepared speech. Fred will be announcing the news at special events around the town, dressed in a gown sponsored by local communicators Swindon Cable, ringing a special bell provided by the Goddard Arms Hotel which will be engraved by Deacons the Jewellers. Retired bus inspector with Stagecoach, Fred put his achievement down to a drill course when he was in the Territorial Army. "A very loud Coldstream Guard sergeant major taught us to give orders by bringing sound from deep down, not just from the throat." An active member of the British Legion, Fred has kept his voice in good trim as marshall at the Rememberance Day parade to Swindon cenotaph for the last 14 years. Not only will Fred carry out civic

Vanessa's battle ends Brave Vanessa Whelpdale lost her struggle with stomach cancer at Bristol Childrens Hospital on Friday 18 July after a rapid deterioration in her health. Seven year old Vanessa was featured on the front page of the April 1996 Link when she achieved her dreams of making a pilgrimage to Lourdes and meeting Mickey Mouse at Disney Land Paris. The family who live at Stockbridge Copse, Peatmoor had been so hopeful Vanessa could reach a crucial two year point since remission in August, after coping with intensive chemotherapy, seven operations and a bone marrow transplant. Sadly they learnt that the cancer had returned in May. "Her faith in God played a major part in her recovery the first time round," said Lisa Whelpdale. "We were always positive and that's how we were approaching things again; we were back to square one, but we would overcome the problem." Vanessa took her first communion at Holy Family Church in late June. Speaking to The Link when the photo' above was taken a week

Vanessa Whelpdale with her mum Lisa before she died, Vanessa said, "I remember my trip to Lourdes and I say my prayers every night. I feel Jesus is always with me, helping me." Regulars at The Dolphin Inn in Devizes went ahead with a sponsored fun day on 20 July originally planned to help the family take Vanessa on holiday before starting more chemotherapy. Rob Whelpdale said he and Lisa would like to thank all those who have supported the family. He paid tribute to the unstinting help from CALM, Gill Harley, Swindon's CLICK cancer nurse and the Bristol Children's Hospital. Vanessa's funeral took place on 24 July at Holy Family Church. Staff at the Windmill Hill Business Park company, and supporters, raised almost £2,400 which was split equally to help work with abused children by the Swindon branch of the NSPCC, and to provide equipment at Princess Margaret Hospital to treat breast cancer. Minister banned from free fall Abbey Meads minister Deaconess Maureen Spinks has been told she is not to make another parachute jump following her safe landing on 5 July. Unfortunately, it was not quite in the right place. Maureen was using her fortieth birthday present from husband Ian and after a day of instruction at the Joint Services Parachute School, Netheravon, she was ready for the high jump in aid of charity. "It was a beautiful day, a good flight up, a text book exit from the aircraft and a perfect landing," she said proudly. "1 was told myparachute control was good as well, but I just landed a bit off target - by about half a mile. "We were given clear instructions, but my brain just could not work out where the target was until it was too late to change direction. Now my certificate has been marked as unsuitable for future jumps." Maureen's efforts were all in a good cause as she is hoping to

Babies born with the deformity are usually abandoned in orphanages. Few get surgical attention and many spend their entire lives with severe speech and eating problems and can end up in old fashioned lunatic asylums. Dentaid arranged for two children from the House of Babies in Cherkassy to receive plastic surgery from a team headed by consultant Anthony Rowsell. A Ukrainian surgeon is receiving intensive training in western techniques for six months. He will return to set up a training programme in a Dentaid provided operating theatre, and the process will be repeated next year. A pioneering Internet link is being developed to allow long distance instruction and training during operations to take place. In last month's Link, Marsha and Andrew were pictured with Jan Messenger from Freshbrook, who runs 1MM Embroidery. Jan has agreed to supply them with sweatshirts and T shirts embroidered with the Dentaid logo so that they can promote the charity at competitions around Europe.

Dentaid's sister charity Hope Now had discovered an orphanage for 5 to 15 year olds in a desperate condition and launched an urgent appeal for help. Hope Now volunteer Bill Allen from Wanborough, was willing to coordinate a Swindon collection. He had just returned with Chris Swatton from Freshbrook from building a ÂŁ10,000 playground at the House of Babies in Cherkassy, with money raised at a ball at the Chinese Experience in early May. The July Link was at the press, waiting for the August edition would miss the aid lorry deadline.

Bill circulated his contacts and The Link sent a letter to schools and

churches in the WestSwindon area. The response was immediate and quite amazing. In only 4days over two tonnes of clothing, toiletries and treats had been collected. Particular thanks goes to Brook Field, Oliver Tomkins, Shaw Ridge and Greendown Schools, Westlea Church and St Mary's in Lydiard Park for all their contributions. A swimming teacher known to nearly every primary school child in Swindon has hung up her costume after twenty years instructing. Janet Renyard has had contact with all of the town's junior schools and has probably taught at least 20,000 children during her service with Wiltshire County Council and Thamesdown Council at the Health Hydro and Link Centre pools. "1 have countless, unforgettable memories and

am quite sad at stopping," said Janet. "1 would hope that no child has left school without being able to swim." She was presented with a cut glass bowl at Oliver Tomkins Junior School on 11 July. Headteacher Revd. Andrew Padgett said, "Janet will be remembered as a firm but kind teacher. The children always responded and gave their best. Her contribution has been tremendous."

Residents of George Tweed Gardens at Shaw Village Centre held a barbeque to celebrate raising over ÂŁ1,000 for the Prospect Foundation at the end of June. Family move 'back home' to put community life back into farm Lower Shaw Farm in Old Shaw Lane is back under old new management. After two years enjoying a relatively orderly life in the centre of town, Andrea Hirsch and Matt Holland, and their children, Rosa, Jacob and Anna have returned to what they call their 'ramshackle but real home,' down on the farm.

"This place is definitely our first love," said the couple, who first moved to Lower Shaw in 1980 when the farm was surrounded by open fields. They had been instrumental in building a thriving educational and recreational centre that hummed with life. In their absence during the last two years, and despite the good intentions of remaining residents, a number of the farm's significant activities had either fallen into decline or been abandoned altogether. The kindergarten was moved out and residential courses came to a halt. All the farm's animals disappeared and the garden had become a veritable vegetable jungle.

"But all will be well again," said Matt. "The groundswell of local support and from people across the country is just amazing. Over our first weekend back on 12 July, we were overwhelmed by helpers. People turned up unannounced with strimmers, chainsaws, spades, cakes and good wishes. We are delighted to be back." Revival of the farm includes plans for more local work than before, with schools, arts groups, after-school activities, and the Swindon Festival of Literature. New mobile arrives as numbers grow The pressures on Brook Field School will be even greater from Septemberwhen numbers of children on roll increase from 525 to 550. The message was clearly conveyed to parents when yet another mobile was delivered to the site during July. Swindon Council has agreed to build a school at Roughmoor, next to the village centre. But the predicted date for opening is 1999. "The school can cope with this extra children, but we urgently need the Roughmoor School to be built soon," said chair of the Brook Field Parents Action Group which has campaigned for the new school over the last two years.

Keen Tamogochi owner James Boswell from Mears Drive, Shaw called excitedly in early July to claim that he has the oldest in The Link distribution area. James, 10, put down his pocket money to buy the new little Japanese electronic creature in midJune. With careful nurturing by pressing the right buttons on the device, which includes playing and caring for it, feeding, toilet training and discipline, he brought it to the maximum age of 99 years.

The Brook Field pupil also cares for his Tamogochi, called Fredo, at school by turning off the sound and caring for it at break times. "1 really wanted a pet, but my mum wouldn't let me," said James. "Fredo needs more attention than a pet, but he does not take as much time. He's a good investment." The electronic wizz-kid is so good at caring for his Tamogochi that school mates want to buy his secrets. James has been considering the offers.

New village centre plans on display

There is still time to view the outline plans for the long awaited Roughmoor village centre before they go to Swindon Council's planning committee in September. Nearly ten years after the first people arrived in Sparcells, a commercial consortium has finally been found to commit itself to building the much needed facilities on the north side of Peatmobr Lagoon, next to the Chinese Experience restuarant. Large numbers of people saw the plans on display in Sparcells Community Centre between 21 and 23 July, and talked to Swindon Council planning departrnentstaff about the proposals. If the planning committee approves the scheme, the centre will have a public house, six shops, a

nursery, 22 houses and six flats. Dr Kandiah has had his permanent surgery on the site for the last two years. The site for Roughmoor primary school is located next to the village centre and will incorporate a community centre. Comments on the plans can be made up to 10 August. They can be viewed at Swindon Council's planning department offices at Premier House, Station Road. Principal planning officer Martin Trewhella is responsible for the project and can be contacted on 466328.

Obituary A stalwart and feisty campaigner from the early days of West Swindon died in July at the age of 95. Fire staff changes at Westlea Sub-officer Perry Payne writes: We've had a busy month at your local fire station responding to 93 calls to incidents including house fires, car fires, persons shut in lifts, a person shut in phone box, a fire involving pressurised gas cylinders, grass, tree, shop and skip fires, road traffic accidents with trapped persons and even a hot air balloon which came down 'a bit unexpectedly' - at least it is varied. Following a Brigade management re-structure our Station Commander, Assistant Divisional Officer Steve Law, has moved on to a new challenge looking after the physical resources (buildings?) in the Brigade. He will be missed by us all. We wish Steve and his family all the best for the future. Steve has been striving for some time to lose weight. In the end it seems this is the only way we were ever going to see less of him. We welcome our new Station Coordinator, Station Officer Graham Bishop.

Winners take tea with the first citizen Sixteen Link readers who entered a competition in the May edition to take tea with the Mayor of Swindon Maurice Fanning were entertained in his parlour at the Civic Offices on 4 July. The Mayor gave a fascinating talk about the items on display in his parlour and their place in Swindon's history. He described how he sees the role as first citizen and the custodian of the Mayor's position. The guests viewed the gallery of past Mayors and

toured the council committee rooms. "It was a lovely visit," said Joan Shields from Freshbrook, who tried on the Mayor's robes. "It was fascinating to find out what goes on behind the scenes."

The Wilts and Berks Canal Amenity Group are looking for teams to take to the water on Saturday 16 August. They are organising a variety of raft races for different age groups at Templars Firs, Wootton Bassett, including the fastest raft time to cover the whole 2 mile length of the restored canal. Rafts will have to be no wider than six feet and be hand paddled. Advanced practice will be permitted and all rafts will be inspected on the day to ensure water worthiness and safety. All rafters have to be over 17 years.

The Amenity Group are inviting businesses, schools and community groups to build and race their rafts. Individuals can also enter. The proceeds of the event will be used to improve canalside facilities, including upgrading the towpath to wheelchair status, providing seats, litter bins, notice boards and more lifebelts. tries needed to act responsibly and reduce levels of greenhouse gases linked with climate change. Britain has met the current target but with a decline in manufacturing industry, which means that other countries are being asked to bear the environmental cost of the energy and resources used to make the goods we buy and sell. Taxing pollution and non-renewable resources would be a step in the right direction particularly if the revenue is used to provide alternatives such as affordable public transport and insulating houses. Fossil fuels are still too cheap and energy efficient technology is not encouraged. Nearly a third of all energy is used in the home yet the average British dwelling consumes ten times more power than houses being built elsewhere in Europe. Consequently the recent budget should have reduced VAT on energy-saving goods and not fuel bills. Shoppers are unaware of the true price of what they buy. Organic produce seems expensive but there is the hidden cost of removing agro-chemicals used in intensive farming from our water. A situation not helped by the fact that more and more of these chemicals are required to revive soil exhausted by forced production.

Furthermore, intensive farming is heavily subsidised whilst organic farming receives little help. Big fields and the use of pesticides mean there is also an environmental bill to pay: loss of wildlife, habitats and natural predators. We all want 'freedom of choice', but how often do we stop to think about the effect of our lifestyle on others? What is the environmental and social impact of us being able to fly and drive wherever we want? How have the cash crops we demand such as tobacco, tea, coffee and flowers damaged third world countries that produce them? Closer to home, is it right to water the lawn when groundwater is being depleted and rivers are running dry, or throw away valuable materials that could be reused or recycled? Is it necessary to 'kill all known germs', insist on washing being 'whiter than white', blitz and blight nature so as to destroy all garden 'pests'? Caring for the environment and others is about global citizenship, taking responsibility for your own actions, being aware and making sound choices about what you buy and how you choose to live. Is it really a sacrifice to give up what you don't need, to preserve what you do? You can do it, it's good for society and it's good for your soul.

With summer gardening in full swing, Swindon Council is campaigning hard to get people to recycle more organic material. About 30% of all household waste is made up of kitchen vegetable scraps and garden clippings and cuttings. At present it goes straight into landfill, but it can just as easily be composted in the garden and reused to improve soil. Tough questions to ask house builders New house builders could make their houses 'greener,' but they have ignored pressure to build to higher environmental standards, and to offer buyers cheaper running costs. The Swindon Environmental Forum have called on house developers, particularly in the northern expansion, to improve designs to save energy and improve recycling. But none are willing to build beyond minimum standards. Now the Forum wants buyers to ask whether new houses are environmentally friendly. "It's worth

finding out the cost of running a house," says Eddie Bedwell, chair of the planning working group. "One third of all energy is used in the home; it makes environmental and economic sense to sell fuel and water efficient houses. The additional building costs are modest and home owners can expect a pay-back within 6 years. During
