Head departs on a busy note Hreod Parkway headteacher Richard Cleall announced to staff, children and parents in mid-July, that he will be taking retirement at the end of the autumn term. Mr Cleall has been headteacher at Hreod for 17 years, which included the turmoil of schools reorganisation in Swindon when Hreod Burna School changed from a high school taking 14 to 18 year olds to become an 11 to 16 school under its new name. The one time stand-up comedian who used to entertain the punters at Soho's Windmill Theatre between strip acts in the 1950s, Mr Cleall will be spending his retirement fishing and concentrat-

ing on his passion for collecting and restoring classic cars. However, he will not be leaving Hreod at a quiet moment in its history. The school is due for a visit from school inspectors from the Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) at the beginning of December. The amount of work required from headteachers and staff to prepare for such an inspection is vast and will keep everybody concerned with the school very busy throughout the autumn term.

Meet the leader The opportunity to meet Sue Bates, Leader of Thamesdown Borough Council, is to become a permanent fixture in the civic diary. The aim is to maximise public contact with the council in addition to surgeries organised local ward councillors. No appointment is needed to meet the Sue. 'Now I want to learn to swim'

A six year old from Roughmoor went swimming on 15 July for the first time in nearly two years, thanks to the Oasis Leisure Centre and The Link magazine.

Vanessa Whelpdale, who lives at Stockbridge Copse, was diagnosed as having stomach cancer in March 1995 and had to endure months of gruelling chemotherapy, seven operations and a bone marrow transplant. In March this year she was pictured on The Link front page with Mickey Mouse, on a visit to Disney Land Paris promised by her parents Rob and Lisa. They also made a pilgrimage to Lourdes. On their return Vanessa announced that her next goal was to go swimming when various tubes had been removed from her body. The Oasis were happy to arrange an outing for the family, although a bout of chicken pox and an ear infection delayed the visit.

"It was a lovely trip," said Lisa Whelpdale. "We were uncertain how Vanessa would take to the size of the Oasis and whether she would be reluctant to go into the water. But she surprised us. Her friend Rosie jumped in and she followed without any holding back. Now she wants to go every day and learn how to swim properly. Afterwards, Lisa, Rob and Vanessa, with cousin Kelly Mead and school friend Rosie Castle enjoyed a meal in the cafe with the compliments of the Oasis. "We all had a lovely time," said Lisa. "It was the first time Rob and I had been swimming for a couple of years; it really was nice to do something together as a family."

Real life history at Lydiard History came alive at Lydiard Park on 16 July when all the children at Tregoze School enacted the periods they have been studying all term. There was a Tudor wedding in St Mary's Church, Victorian maids and gardeners being servile, Romans holding chariot races, Greeks being mythical and Vikings rampaging around the woods. The children were reclaiming history which had been stolen by the ghastly Mahmen (headteacher Steve Menham), who was captured and put on trial at the end of the day in front of a Time Lord brought in from the schools advisory service. Good was triumphant, history was restored and the children returned happily to the twentieth century. Chariot racing was afeature of the Roman day. Westlea Schools fete on 29 June raised a massive £3,700. Organised around a country fair theme, there were lots of stalls and activities. Special attractions included maggot racing and an obstacle course race holding jellies. Glenys Guntrip, chair of the Friends of Westlea School Association, said, "there was a great turnout from parents and the local community to make the day a wonderful success."

Raising cash for disabled bowling A second monthly tombola stall at the West Swindon Centre takes place on Wednesday 7 August, 10am to 4pm. Hope for Roughmoor Village Centre

Peatmoor Sparcells Framework

An end to the long and frustrating wait by Sparcells and Peatmoor residents for local facilities may be coming. The first people moved into Sparcells in 1988 and the two residents pictured right are viewing a plan at a public display put on in 1990. Thamesdown Council has at last found a developer willing to build a convenience store and smaller units, to complement the pub which is already planned, at a village centre next to Dr Kandiahs surgery. Local councillor Maurice Fanning said the delay was caused by a previous developer not being able to find takers for the units. 'Two years ago there were too few houses. Now that the area is nearly complete, there is much greater commercial interest. Campaigning for a new school Ed Surman reports on the work of the Brook Field Action Group, set up to campaign for a new primary school to be built at Roughmoor to alleviate overcrowding at Saltway and Brook Field schools which will have a combined shortfall of 270 places by year 2000 according to Wiltshire County Council. The campaign was launched after a meeting with governors and Thamesdown Borough Council representatives attended by over 150 parents. Six parents have since been the main force to get funding for design and construction of the new school. A circular was sent to residents of Shaw, Nine Elms, Peatmoor and Sparcells asking parents to lobby politicians and council officers of both Wiltshire and Thamesdown. This was a great success, being widely supported by parents and residents. The issue is high on Thamesdown's agenda. However, the new school was not granted design funding by Wiltshire County Council in the capital programme for 96/97, the last year they will control the budget. Our focus is now directed at the new Swindon unitary authority which will control funding from April 1997. We have already met with officers to make our case. Parental concern has also been noted by local MP Simon Coombs who has suggested that money may be available from the Government's Capital Challenge Fund announced in May. He has urged Thamesdown Council to put together a bid before the deadline of 23 September and the council's Policy and Resources Committee is investigating this. The Government has only allocated £11 million to cover a wide range of capital schemes in the South West, so we have to keep our fingers crossed. The Action Group continues to lobby Thamesdown councillors and officers and have arranged to meet with Kevin Small, chair of the Education Committee; Dave Cox, Labour councillor for Toothill and Phil Cook, education officer

for the new unitary authority, during early September to put our case forward once again. It feels like wading through treacle sometimes, especially when trying to make contact with officers on the phone, or when failing to get responses to letters. But there are very definite signs of progress. The support given by local residents and parents has been invaluable. As long as you are behind us the campaign continues. Salt Way School children studying Tudor times were treated to a display of hunting birds on 26 June. Town players launch bar Swindon town players Mark Seagraves and Mark Robinson visited Toothill Community Centre in early July to relaunch the licensed bar with 80 residents of the area. The bar had been closed for nine months following the collapse of the independent trading company managing it. Toothill Community Centre chairwoman Jean Carey said the reopening of the bar would please a lot of people. "It's been hard work for the management committee to get the bar open again. The credit should go to our treasurer Ray

Bunce for all his hard work in dealing with the technicalities. The income from the bar will help fund more activities for local people in the centre." All Toothill residents are members of the centre and they are invited to attend a special general meeting to verify and confirm the centre's management committee on Tuesday 6 August, 7pm.

Shops plan poses school security worries One hundred people attended a public meeting organised by Haydon Wick Parish Council at the Haydon Centre on 10 July, to discuss objections to a controversial proposal by Wiltshire County Council to develop a supermarket and shops on land between Haydon Leigh School and Westfield Way. The scheme to be considered by Thamesdown Council's planning committee on 6 August shows the access road adjacent to the school playing field. Headteacher Jon Swaffield said the school's governors were worried about noise and air pollution. "The plans show the delivery turning head within 5 metres of the school and only 11 metres from children in the classroom." He said the school would be full in 18 months and mobiles would have to be located next to the access road. Further expansion would be impossible if the development went ahead. The site was originally part of the school until it was deemed as surplus by the County's Education Committee. Others at the meeting were worried about the increased traffic near the school entrance. In the light of recent tragedies at schools, there were concerns about undesirable people hanging around the shops so close to the school. House developers Bradleys handed over the land for a school in the early 1980s and a question of the legality and ethics of selling the land for commercial use was

ABBEY MEADS

Any ideas for a name in the north? It's still early days in the house building programme to the north of Haydon Wick. But what is it all to be called? Some 350 houses have been occupied or sold in the two years since the first people moved into Abbey Meads in August 1994. Another 3 as yet un-named 'villages' are planned as the development grows to the planned 10,000 homes over the next fifteen years. In the early days of West Swindon, it was known as Toothill, until people in Freshbrook and Westlea moved in and demanded recognition. For many years the area was known as the 'western expansion area or the 'western development. 'The Link can claim responsibility for the area now being known as 'West Swindon.' By continually using this name in the magazine, people took it on as they put their roots down into the growing community. Gradually references in other papers, council documents, maps and on road signs followed. Expansion in the north is often referred to as the 'northern development area,' the 'Haydon Sector' and more recently Abbey Meads. Houses will soon be appearing to the west of Abbey Meads, on the

edge of Woodhall Park. A village name has yet to be decided. On old maps the land is known as Taw Hill. However the developers will probably want something twee like Highgrove Park. Local Thamesdown councillor Kelvin King points out that most of the development is covered by Haydon Wick Parish Council, with areas to the north of the proposed Abbey Meads village centre in Blunsdon parish. "Haydon Wick parish was formed in 1928; previously it was part of Rodbourne Cheney parish." he says. "The parish council absorbed the 60s developments of Haydon Leigh and Greenmeadow around the original village of Haydon Wick. It would be good to build up the community spirit in the Abbey Meads area so that people feel part of the Haydon Wick parish." The Link would like to hear of suggestions. What names could be given to the three villages to be built over the next few years? What is the right overall name to give identity to the new town appearing to the north of Swindon?

Watched by parents and grandparents, children at Parkway PreSchool enjoyed a sunny sports afternoon on 15 July on the school field outside their base at Moredon Youth and Community Centre. Five groups of children, divided by age, each took part in seven races. Supervisor Debbie Garslaing and her team of assistants organised the sports to encourage team spirit which is an excellent preparation for infant school. The pre-school is open for half day sessions every day of the week, including the supervised eating of packed lunches. There are vacancies for September. Not only has the twenty year old Swindon College HND Business and Finance student worked her way up through the ranks in the Air Cadets to the rank of cadet warrant officer, she has also spent the last five years achieving the bronze and silver awards and working towards gold. For her community service stage, Helene spent 60 hours during the last twelve months working at Westlea Fire Station, supervised by Fireman Steve Field. She at-

tended lectures on the principles of combustion, first aid and the workings of the brigade and studied Fire Brigade Control. Helene took part in everyday activities at Westlea station with Group One watch, including routine drills and riding the fire engine to incidents. She passed a fire safety examination, submitted a detailed essay and kept a log of her

duties, gaining a Fire Marshall Certificate during her year with the brigade. Wiltshire Chief Fire Officer John Craig presented Helene with an end of project certificate at Westlea Station on 5 July. He paid tribute to her commitment and expressed his pleasure that the brigade had been able to help Helene achieve her gold award.

Engineers put skills to the test Engineers from some of Swindon's biggest companies took over the year 10 timetable at Greendown School on 8 July. Neighbourhood Engineers, members of the Engineering Council, supervised projects to build radios, model aircraft and oil rigs, kites and water powered rockets. Students also made a trip to nearby National Power to operate a power station simulator and spent time working on computer aided design programmes in the New College technology centre based at the school.

Organised by neighbourhood engineer and Greendown governor Gordon Watt of Royal Mail Research, engineers from Galileo, National Power, Halcrow civil engineering, New College, Swindon and Trowbridge Colleges took part. "The students had to find solutions to problems commonly found in engineering," said Mr Watt. "The projects were designed to stretch their knowledge of science, maths and technology . We also tried to make engineering fun and attractive as a career."

The increase in the number of residential properties being let out on Assured Shorthold Tenancies under the Housing Act 1988, is in part attributable to the flexibility of these types of tenancies which are attractive to both landlords and tenants. As a consequence specialist insurance products have been formulated in order to give property owners additional protection. The principal product is legal expenses insurance. This will provide the property owner with the legal resources to take tenants to court where required. This is normally an extra cost to landlords. Hot wheels in August A skate jam in the Link Centre coach park on 6 July attracted over 70 skate boarders, roller skaters, BMX bikers and in-liners. Part-time youth worker Patrick Phillips said the event was organised to give young people the chance to show the need for a purpose built skate park in West Swindon. Names are being collected for a petition calling on Thamesdown Council to help provide one. Link Centre staff assisted jam organisers to put on the event by donating wood to build a large ramp which is being stored in the centre's outdoor compound. Record flower festival fund raiser St Mary's Church in Lydiard Park blossomed for the annual Festival of Flowers and Music over the weekend of 5 to 7 July. A record amount was raised from donations by visitors over the three days, from the Friday evening concert and the Saturday afternoon summer fayre. St Mary's vicar Reverend Rob Burles said the events had raised a total £2,600. "It was a very successful weekend. The money raised will go towards the work of the church in the community and running costs; the windows and heating particularly need attention. Thank you to everybody who came and supported us." Ann Hall writes; Tim and Zinnia Symonds, who work in Hong Kong with the Overseas Missionary Fellowship, returned to England for a year's Home Assignment in February and visited Toothill Church in June. Tim and Zinnia lived in Freshbrook from 1980 to 1982 and were members of Toothill Church. They believed they were called by God to work for Him abroad and in 1982 they went out to Hong Kong with their daughter Caroline, then aged four. At first their work was based on a day centre for the elderly at Sha Tin. With a group of Chinese Christians they planted a new church which now has 150 members. In 1985 they adopted a five year old Chinese girl call Susanna. In 1992 Tim became Area Director for the Hong Kong field of the Overseas

Missionary Fellowship. He administers a team of 16 missionaries working in various roles. Tim and Zinnia also run a Fellowship Centre to provide hospitality for OMF personnel passing through Hong Kong. There is considerable interest in Christianity in Hong Kong. Ten per cent of the population attend a Christian church and many of the schools are run by Christian organisations. Tim and Zinnia will return to Hong Kong in February 1997 and will continue their work after July 1997, when the country returns to Chinese rule. China has promised that existing Christian activities may continue. The members of Toothill Church will continue to support Tim and Zinnia and their work with prayers and money.

Delicious meals to the door A couple from Haydon Wick have started a business which will suit everybody's taste. Geoff and Pauline Stevens from Primrose Close, pictured below, launched Deliciously Different frozen foods home delivery service in the July Link magazine and have been delighted by the response from readers so far. Geoff runs Kingfisher Catering Services at one of the towns biggest companies. When it was, it was for educational or charitable purposes. As part of our spring and summer programme, rangers and volunteers from Lackham Agricultural College are staging a Victorian theme walk. You will be able to meet and talk to some of the estate grooms, gamekeepers, woodland and farm workers. See Swindon Wide, pages 20/21, for details. Work has started in the arboretum area at Lydiard on coppicing the alder plantation. This is an operation which involves felling the alder trees to ground level. This will result in the trees eventually producing new shoots which will prolong their life. Is it hoped that there will be minimal disruption to footpaths. This year's Wiltshire Festival is upon us again. The excitement is mounting as festival organisers begin measuring up for fencing and the stage area.

Forty people turned up on 14 July to look at the development of the Shaw Tip country park as advertised in last month's Link. Thamesdown Council landscape architect Matthew Hawkins and countryside ranger Mike Lilley conducted tours around the site being developed near Sparcells. The tipped area has been capped with sub-soil from the Abbey Meads development and despite the poor conditions, 95% of the trees planted in a mass community tree plant 18 months ago have survived. There is more landscaping planting and thousands more trees to be planted before the new park is ready in twenty years time.

Ever thought of counselling? Amanda Richardson, co-producer with Peter Gordon of a BBC documentary about relationship counselling, describes the project and the help they are seeking. Almost anything can spark a crisis in a relationship or re-activate old wounds and hidden hurts. It could be overwork or unemployment, it could be money worries, the birth of a child, finding time for each other and raising children, the sheer pressures of modern life, or even something as universal as retirement. experts now say there is no such thing as a healthy tan. Skin cancer has increased world wide. In the UK alone, there were 40,000 cases diagnosed in 1994 and 2,000 deaths from malignant melanoma. Nonmalignant forms of skin cancer are also on the increase and although these are not life threatening they are very disfiguring. Whilst the problem has only been recently recognised in Britain, highly effective sun safety campaigns have been run in Australia since 1981.

Swindon based Aussie, Raylene Croad (above), who works for the Health Promotion Unit, says skin cancer is the most common form of cancer back home with 140,000 cases in 1992. "Every year there is a new theme in Australia. The first campaign in the early 1980s was 'Slip, slop, slap,' (slip on a T shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat).

Fry.' "The campaigns aim to change the sun worshipping culture into a sun protection culture. Surveys show that 95% of Australians are now aware of skin cancer and how to prevent it. Schools organise evening sports days and neck to knees full body swim suits are very fashionable. "A survey in Britain last year found that 70% of people still want more information. A problem here is recognising sunburn conditions. You don't have to be on the beach; you could be walking the dog or gardening. The sun can also be strong on an overcast day. And getting a quick suntan after a long, cold winter can be dangerous." Raylene says that the warmth of the sun can make us feel happy, healthy, relaxed and alive. However the ill-effects of over exposure only appear in later life. So, be kind to your skin: •Never allow your skin to burn •Keep out of the sun between 11am and 3pm •Wear loose, tightly woven clothing, a sunhat and sunglasses for protecion (this is a cheap and effective way of preventing skin cancer) •Young children and babies should always wear protective clothing (babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sun light altogether) •Apply sunscreen cream generously and re-apply every two hours and after swimming. Choose high factor sunscreens particularly for children. Sun screen cream will prevent your skin from drying out, however, there is no direct evidence that sunscreen cream prevents skin cancer. You cannot lie safely in the hot sun just because you are covered in sunscreen.

Charity Golf Tournament From Laurie Austin, Chairman, CALM (Children's Cancer & Leukaemia Movement) A charity golf tournament held at Wrag Barn Golf Course, Highworth on Tuesday 27 June, raised nearly £3,000 for Swindon based children's charity CALM. Local Lives If you care for someone - who cares for you? It is estimated that there are around 19,000 people in the Thamesdown area that are looking after someone who is frail, old, ill or disabled, writes Gillian Barber, coordinator of the Swindon Carers Centre. Many people do not even consider themselves as carers. But if you are a parent looking after sick or disabled children; a child looking after sick or disabled parents, brothers or sisters; an adult looking after elderly parents, or a neighbour - then you are a carer. A carer does not have to care full time or even live in the same house as the person being cared for. They may only pop in once a week or do some shopping - if they didn't do it, who would?

Thamesdown Carer Relief (TCR), established as Homecare Thamesdown in 1980, provides paid carers to come into the home to help the carer, or to allow him/ her to take a break from the physical and emotional stress of looking after someone. The service is available for short or long term care and staff will undertake whatever task a carer would normally carry out, whether peeling potatoes or changing a stoma bag.

But if they do not see themselves as carers how can they access the help available to them? In Swindon The Princess Royal Trust for Carers has sponsored The Swindon Carers Centre, in Morley Street, which houses two well-respected organisations, each dedicated to helping and providing care for carers: Health Matters (established 1989) provides support for carers by giving advice and information on what is available to them, helping them find the right services and giving emotional support. Staff work alongside policy makers and service providers in health and social services to ensure that carers are consulted and their views taken into consideration in the planning of local services. Health Matters has a second role which is to work with local support groups which allow people to meet others in a similar position, and give them strength to cope with their situation.

Barbara Hendon, TCR Care Manager. says, "we're not a nursing agency. Our aim is to relieve the carers of their responsibility, allowing them the freedom to do something for themselves for a change - whether its having a bath, reading a book or going on holiday." Caring for another person is something that can happen to anyone at any time. By the end of this decade, it is estimated that one in three of us will be a carer. Then we too will know the feelings of tiredness, isolation, anger, embarrassment, upset and guilt so commonly expressed by carers. However, we in Swindon are fortunate in having Health Matters and TCR to fight for our rights and provide practical support. Both organisations have increased publicity to identify the many hidden carers. We want every carer in Thamesdown to be aware of the help available and how to get it, even if not needed immedidately.
