A group of West Swindon Centre users claim six barriers installed across a footpath to protect pedestrians from cyclists actually increases the danger to people on foot, particularly children and the elderly. The footpath on the north side of the centre is designated a joint walkway/cycleway linking Toothill and Freshbrook to Westlea. Centre manager Julian Leggett said he had to take action after an elderly woman walking on the footpath was badly injured after being hit by a speeding cyclist. 'We have a major problem. We cannot close the route to bicycles, but we must avoid another accident. Cyclists ignored the white line painted on the footpath and the barriers are a physical protection to people walking from the car park.' He said the width of the barriers had been reduced, but trolleys and buggies can still be pushed under them whilst shoppers should walk around them. However, pedestrian, cyclist and mother Marie Hanna from Grange Park says the scheme creates more conflicts between users. "It's very awkward to push trolleys under the barriers and walk around them. It's impossible if you're holding a toddler's hand whilst pushing your shopping. "The usable space has been greatly reduced and there is less room for those on foot to pass cyclists. Barriers down the centre of the walkway and better warning signs would be a better solution." Kerry Prentice from Toothill said it was difficult to push a trolley under the barriers, especially if there is a child sitting in it. "I've seen cyclists weave in and out of the barriers to avoid trolleys being pushed in the cycleway." She added that many trolleys will not easily push in a straight line.

Burglars deterred by police action

Reviewing the new barriers at the West Swindon Cent re,from left to right, Marie Sneddon with her sons Kenneth and Craig, Marie Hanna and Terry Prentice Geraldine Richardson from Ramleaze thought the barriers were very awkward to get a trolley round. Marie Sneddon from Nine Elms commented. "I think the barriers area stupid idea. They put me off bringing my children to the shopping centre." Mr Leggett said the barriers were now permanent fixtures, but he might reduce the number after monitoring the situation.

Burglaries in hard-hit Grange Park have dropped dramatically following a plainclothes surveillance operation by the police leading to arrests and further investigations. The Link reported exclusively last month that in the first five months of the year there had been 56 house break-ins on the 1,900 homes in the area, 14% of burglaries in the Swindon North police sub-division. At a public meeting on 12 July, publicised on the July front page, Inspector Andy Tatum revealed that the police had cracked the problem for the time being. There had been no burglaries since 17 June. Over 120 people attended to discuss the situation. Inspector Tatum said he was very pleased by the resident's support. "This sets the scene for further meetings in other areas." Continued on page 3

Only seven people turned up at the Annual General Meeting in late June and a Thamesdown Council representative said the centre would probably have to close if a new management committee could not be found. Forty people attended a re-arranged AGM on4July where there was strong representation from the Good Companions pensioners club and the licensed bar. A committee to manage the centre was elected with Jean Carey, 78, as chair, and lunch club organiser Lily Wiley, 69, as vice-chair. Jean, who was involved with a campaign for a community centre in 1978 long before it was built, and chair of the centre management committee for two years from 1990, said, "1 was persuaded to put myself forward for the committee at the last moment and was quite shocked to be elected.

"Things are quite critical for the centre. We have got to try to keep it open but the people of Toothill don't seem to be interested. The centre is run by volunteers but we need much more support from Thamesdown Council to help us get on our feet again." The centre is a meeting place for a lunch club, dance classes, a martial arts group, playgroup and youth club. All Toothill residents are members of the community centre. The majority will not have been aware of the annual general meeting as The Link was not informed of the date until after it had been printed. Police action gets results (continued from front page) Crime Prevention Officer Sgt. Bob Walton warned residents against complacency following the arrests. 'We apprehended somebody on the first night of the operation and the word quickly got round the criminal fraternity to stay away from Grange Park. "There is no evidence of displacement of break-ins as yet. We will be keeping a close eye on the reports of burglaries in other areas." He said it was crucial for householders in all parts of West and North Swindon to maintain vigilance and improve security. "Take steps to make your home look as if it is occupied if you're out. Improve the quality of locks on doors and windows in the home, garage and garden shed, install security lighting, and take an active part in Neighbourhood Watch

Schemes. All these elements are a deterrant. The majority of breakins are done by petty criminals looking for the easy opportunity. They will stay away if they know an area is a difficult target."

Council re-considers cameras for Freshbrook Centre Plans for closed circuit TV cameras at Freshbrook Village Centre have been revived by Thamesdown Council's Policy and Resources Committee. A spokesman indicated that if the committee agrees, the cameras could be installed in October. A bid for a Home Office crime prevention grant was unsuccessful earlier this year

Lions help out Young international hockey hopeful Emma Kingston has been helped on her way by the West Swindon Lions. The fifteen year old Greendown School pupil started playing hockey three years ago. She now ' plays for Swindon Ladies 1st XI and has progressed to the West of England under 16 squad. West's first playgroup to close The lack of pre-school children in Toothill is forcing a playgroup to close - the first tobe formed in West Swindon and the first to shut down because of a drop in numbers. The Toothill Tots group which meets at Toothill Community Centre, will lose 12 children to school at the end of term, leaving only five or six children in each session. Playgroup supervisor Janet Freeguard said the management committee had decided to close after a long struggle to survive. "We were doing really well last year, but after putting up posters

and advertising places in The Link, we are just not getting new children to join. The playgroup is entirely self-financing and managed by volunteers; we don't have the funds to keep going." Janet, supervisor for 12 years, said she was sad that the group was closing. Toothill Tots was formed in 1977 in a hut that served as a social hall and moved to the community centre when it opened in 1984. She thought that fewer people were moving house and the children in the area were growing up.

Volunteers at Toothill School working to build a library of story sacks have received major backing from staff at Allied Dunbar. The staff charity made a grant of £2,000 in early July so that materials can be bought for the sacks. The money will also pay for support from a Swindon College member of staff who will run workshops for the volunteers. Using the ideas pioneered at Westlea School and now being developedat six other schools in Swindon, each story sack contains play items and games based on a book which will be used by parents who want to help their chil-

dren learn to read and write. Toothill School headteacher Richard Jackson said fifteen parent volunteers had been meeting weekly to make items for the sacks and to discuss ideas for new ones. Ten sacks had been made since the beginning of the year, but they need a stock of forty in the library before it can be opened. New parents, grandparents or friends of the school are always welcome to join the working group on a Wednesday afternoon. Anybody with ideas, sewing skills and time, or interested in helping out in any way, should contact Mr Jackson at the school.

Kids put manager on the spot Swindon Town manager Steve McMahon faced a grilling when he attended a Westlea School assembly on 21 June as part of three day coaching course run by the club's community section. The youngsters posed some tough questions which covered everything from his disciplinary record on the field, the best stadium he has ever played in, to his reason for going into management. In response to Matthew McCombe's question about his red card collection, Steve admitted he had been sent off twice in the short time he had been at Swindon, doubled his total with other clubs. Tongue in cheek, he claimed all were dodgy decisions.

Farrell Copp wanted justification for buying Mark Seagram from Bolton when there were good local players. Simon Nobbs put Steve on the spot by asking his feelings about selling Jan Aage Fjortoft to Middlesborough. Steve said Jan had wanted to stay in top level football and he was quite pleased to see him move on. Looking to the future, Steve said he would lay bets on Swindon's promotion back into Division I by the end of the new season.

A fire crew from Westlea Station visited Shaw's Jellytots playgroup to tell the youngsters about their work and demonstrate equipment. Innovation at Shaw Fun Day The Acorn Playgroup from Holy Trinity Church, Shaw Centre produced one of the more unusual stalls seen at a fete for some time. Their Amazing Stone Age One Armed Bandit at Shaw Village Fun Day on 8 July had all-corners guessing when human arms shot out from behind a screen bearing real, juicy fruit. Shaw Residents' Association chairperson Bob Bauld said the event was successful given the SRA were competing against the Wimbledon Women Final on TV and the Old Town Festival. Fete pulls the crowds A fairground atmosphere and perfect weather were among the ingredients for Greenmeadow School's Summer Fayre. The stalls and sideshows did brisk business throughout the afternoon and the hilarious antics of the Majorwrecks provided the great ending to this very successful event which raised approximately ÂŁ1,400 for school funds. Tigersharks perform well in USA A team of Swindon swimmers have had good results on a two week trip to the USA. Swindon Tigersharks took 32 local youngsters aged ten to 16 to Raleigh, North Carolina to live with the families of American swimmers and train in a 50 metre pool. They also took an over-night trip to neighbouring state of Virginia to swim against other teams in an open competition. Tigersharks coach Elaine Ford from Grange Park, commenting shortly before the team left on 10 July said that all the swimmers had reached county, regional or national competitive standard swimming. "The training in Raleigh will build on the abilities the children already have, and exposing them to different kinds of training can only benefit their future development. "Training daily in a 50 metre Olympic size pool will be a tremendous experience and living with an American family will be an eye opener for our swimmers." She said that in addition to training, the Raleigh Club had organised a programme of sight-seeing visits and activities for the club members.

The competition against several US clubs on 15 July was the central test of the trip. Just before The Link went to press, Steve Ford reported that Elaine had said in a 'phone call that Swindon swimmers had put in some very good performances. 'Several swimmers achieved personal best times and we had a number of winners. "Racing in a 50 metre pool is something most swimmers only do when they get to the very top in this country."

Ladies call up to hockey club Swindon Ladies Hockey Club is keen to hear from people of all ages and any skill level who would like to play - from youngsters to veterans. There are three teams, two of which play in leagues. The club is based at Greendown Community School and training starts on Wednesday evenings in August

June Bradley writes June was quite a busy month for us, instead of our usual meeting we had a darts evening and a skittles evening for which we were joined by the ladies from Hook WI. Both of these events were very popular and enjoyed by all the participants The speaker at our meeting on 19 July was Captain C Atter who told us about the work of the Salvation Army. We shall be having a cake stall in the West Swindon Centre on 28 July so come along and buy some of those super WI cakes. We meet in the Community Room at Toothill School on the third Wednesday of each month at 730pm. You are welcome to visit us at any of our meetings to see if you like what we do. Collecting for the blind The Royal National Institute for the Blind is looking for volunteers who can spare an hour or two each week, to empty 'Sooty' collecting boxes in this area. The RNIB rely on this fundraising activity to support over 60 services including their Sunshine House Schools for visually disabled children. Local organiser, Lester Pearce (tel: 850347) raised over E3,000 from Sooties last year but now needs some help. He will train volunteers and will continue to do the paperwork involved.

What went wrong? Another in the series of articles for The Link from Relate Counsellors. Barbara Stapleton writes about the importance of being able to ask for what you need The story below is fictional but based upon Relate's experience of working with couples Bob came for counselling on his own. He was in a state of shock. He and his wife Penny had been together since they were teenagers and married for the last eight years; they had two small daughters. As far as he was concerned their marriage was fine until suddenly Penny had announced that she was in love with someone else and was leavinghim. He didn't know what had gone wrong. Penny joined Bob and the counsellor for the second session - making it clear that she was only coming to help Bob understand that their marriage was over. She told a different story. She said that she had been unhappy for years and this was because Bob had put so much time into his work, and none into his family - they had hardly seen him. If he hadn't been so wrapped up in his work, he would have had time to notice how frustrated and unhappy she was. Falling in love with the other man had shown her that she must end the marriage. Although Penny was clear about what Bob might have done to make her happier, it emerged through counselling that she had never actually told him. She said that he should have known. Instead, she

expressed her grievances by sulking and on occasions, nagging him. Penny expected Bob to automatically know that she was unhappy without her having to say so; this was surprising because she considered herself a good communicator. Bob said that he was aware that she sometimes appeared upset or irritated but he had never appreciated how important the issues were to Penny. His own parents had stayed together through many bad patches and he thought it was a fact of married life. Counselling came too late to help the relationship. Penny was committed to her new love and completely disillusioned about her marriage to Bob. Many of the things that would have made her happier would have been relatively simple to achieve if she had been able to ask for what she needed at the time. Bob continued on his own with the counsellor; using the time to grieve for the loss of his marriage and, eventually, to explore the various options open to him for his future life. The Bishop of Swindon Michael Doe visited St Mary's Church Flower Festival on 30 June to admire the magnificent arrangements by members of the church and displays from five local primary schools on the theme of David and Soloman. The flower festival was complimented by a concert in the church and a Saturday afternoon summer fair. Over £2,000 was raised for church funds. Lots of summer activity in the park As I write this, early on Monday 10 July, the park is very quiet and peaceful - pigeons cooing, squirrels rummaging through the undergrowth and the litterbins, and a grey overcast sky. Michael Lilley, Countryside Ranger reports. What a contrast to yesterday, Sunday, when it was extremely hot and sunny and every facility in the park was in use. We had one incident where a young lad was hiding in the bushes, got stung by wasps and then panicked and ran, which caused the wasps to attack him even more. We gave him first aid, then took him to PMH as he needed hospital treatment. Please be careful in the woods. If you see an area full of wasps, avoid it, and don't disturb any nests. The play area has now been refurbished. It's the most complete it has been for some time - just ready for the summer holidays. On 1 August we have the official opening of the new Ranger Centre which will be full of displays and information to help explain the park and countryside to our visitors. The Ranger Centre is next to the cafe in the existing Visitor Centre. On Sunday 30 July there will be an 8 mile walk from Wootton Bassett to Clyffe Pypard, starting at lOam from the library in Wootton Bassett. On Friday 4 August there is an illustrated talk on bats entitled 'Going batty at Lydiard' starting at 745pm. This event will include a stroll through the woodland looking for them. On Tuesday 8 August the popular 'Tree of Life' event will be running from 12 noon to 330pm. This

Guild does lunch for Prospect Doreen Shaw writes: The speaker at our July meeting was Dr. Lawton who gave a talk on the history of Coleshill House from when it was built in 1628 until it was destroyed by fire in 1952. The house was unique for its time as the basement was half above ground which provided light and air for the servants quarters. After this time many London houses were built on these lines. We have no Guild meeting in August. But we are getting together for Ethel West's Ploughmans Lunch at Westlea School on 14 August. The proceeds will go to Prospect Hospice. Having had The Link magazine's office bike stolen in May, we were interested when offered a trial of an alarm by an NSA salesman. This device has a sturdy bracket which secures the alarm permanently to the handlebars. It's quite an unusual looking thing in grey, with a large bright blue button to set the sounder with your own code. The alarm squeeks if the bike is moved. Further movement produces a very noisy squawking.

There is also a button on a wire which is a horn - useful for warning pedestrians. But somebody disturbed the bike outside the Link Centre and yanked the wire out proving a weakness. The alarm costs £35, a bit expensive but worth it if you want to prevent a theft. A strong D-lock should still be the first security purchase. Our thanks to everybody who came along to our Fire Safety Family Evening on Monday 3 July and especially to all those who kindly helped. For many reasons it will be a long time before the evening is forgotten by us at Westlea Fire Station. Its estimated over 1,000 people attended and we hope we were able to pass on the message of fire safety in the home. Should anyone require information on this subject we are always glad to help. Fire safety I gave advice in the June 1995 edition of The Link on what to do if a fire starts in your home. Below are the procedures you should follow if you are ever trapped by fire. 1) Try to remain calm - possibly the hardest thing in such circumstances. 2) If you are unable to use the door because of the flames or smoke, close it and use towels or sheets to block any gaps around it. This will help stop the smoke spreading into the room. 3) Try to make your way to the window. If the room becomes smoky, crawl along the floor because smoke rises and its easier to breathe lower down. 4) Open the window and try to attract the attention of others who can alert the fire brigade, who should arrive in a matter of minutes. By following the above instructions you ought to be able to remain in the room. However if you believe you are in immediate danger consider dropping to the ground floor from the window, if its not too far.
