Expansion northwards is all go With the end of development in West Swindon in sight, the town's expansion northwards of Haydon Wick has been launched. The first showhome is due to open on 13 August, the first residents are expected to move into their new homes in the autumn. and the Department of Transport could be resolved.

10,000 houses are planned for the next 15 years, developed around a framework of village centre shopping and community facilities and a district shopping centre. Eight sites forprimary schools havebeen designated, along with a site for a secondary school.

The economic recession and slump in house building over the last four years also contributed to the delays, but with the last few hundred houses in the 'western expansion' tobe built over the next three years, the move north comes at the right time. A survey by Crest Homes last year revealed there is a lot of house buyer interest from people living in the west.

Unlike West Swindon where the 12,000 home development has been largelycontrolledbymamesdown Borough Council, the £650 million scheme to the north of the town is backed entirely by private sector building companies. However the expansion northwards has been held up for several years until argumentsbetween the developers, council planners

Help for Russian children wanted Tim Bath from Markenfield is busily raising funds and collecting goods to take out to an orphanage for mentally handicapped children and an Aids Hospice in St Petersburg, Russia. He took part in a sponsored walk around Barbury Castle on 23 July in readiness for the two week trip on 22 August. Tim will be joining a party organised by a Christian based charity The Messianic Testimony. Hope for pharmacy protection Freshbrook pharmacist Sushma Patel is hoping for a rapid and sympatheticdecisionfromThamesdown Council's Planning Committee in response to her applica tion to install a shutter across her shop front. The Link reported last month on the damage caused by vandals to her pharmacy. Although there is permission for a shutter over the door, only a security grill can be used over the windows. So Sushma uses ugly wooden boards to protect the windows which she has to move every morning and night. Thamesdown has a policy prohibiting shutters. A planning department spokesman said the Planning Committee did not like shutters because of the 'fortress' effect they can give to shopping centres. However councillors are going to review the policy and they may accept high quality shutter systems in some locations. Mrs Patel said she proposed to install the samebmwnwindowshutters as those over her front door.

ROBERTS Doreen Dart gives Margaret Mahoney a send off in her new wheelchair The fund provided her with a lightweight 'booster scooter' four years ago but her needs had to be reconsidered as her rheumatism and osteo-arthritis worsened. Last year's Mayor of Thamesdown Doreen Dart made electric wheelchairs a priority for her fundraising efforts and raised over 0,000 for them. She was on hand as vice chair of the HelpingHand fund to hand over Margaret's new chair. "All those who make a donation to the fund are helping local people in need. They are very generous in their giving," she said. With 11 children and 22 grandchildren, Margaret's new mobility will give her the chance to see them more often.

Something must be done to reduce speeds and to put off drivers who use it as a short cut to work." There have been a number of accidents on Westlea Drive over the years. Thamesdown Council will be carrying out its annual review of dangerous roads across the Borough on 6 September. If it is considered dangerous enough, Westlea Drive will be put forward for funding by Wiltshire County Council. Thamesdown only acts as an agent for Wiltshire. Parents get inspiration from nursery rhymes Westlea School parents had the chance to attend three workshops in June and July to learn more about nursery rhymes as part of a scheme to promote higher levels of literacy in families. Westlea headteacherNeil Griffiths said the workshops, held in the library and the DeVere Hotel, aimed to encourage parents to use nursery rhymes in bringing up children. "Rhymes are being forgotten, but research shows they play an important part in a child's development." Several mums attending have been helping to make story sacks for the Westlea School collection. The story sacks, which are Neil Griffith's brainchild are a central feature in a project to encourage family literacy which is now spreading to other schools across Swindon. The DeVere Hotel made conferance rooms available for the workshops and a creche without charge, General Manager Andrew Spinks made a donation of £30 which will fund two more sacks. Neighbourhood street party Residents of The Laurels in Ramleaze had a great get-together in the sun on 9 July, raising around ENO for the children's cancer charity CALM. Forty-four children took part in pirate games during the afternoon and nearly 100 adults carried on the revelry late into the night. Organiser Sue Rowell said the street party had become a regular event for the three streets which make up The Laurels. "The parties started when the houses were occupied five years ago. It's a great way for neighbours to get to know each other and we're able to help a good cause." Previous parties have supported NSPCC and Prospect Foundation. This year there was backing for the childrens cancer support group CALMasoneof theyoung residents is receiving treatment for leukemia.

High hopes for balanced development in north expansion Story continued from front page At the official launch of the first phase of 3,200 houses to be built by several building companies and to be known as Abbey Meads, Crest Nicholson chief executive John Callcutt, stressed the quality of environment which would be found. "We are looking forward to seeing Abbey Meads grow and we intend to ensure that the development is a credit to Swindon as the town enters the next century." He said the first site for a primary school would be offered to the local authority in 1995 and the developers had agreed to contribute ÂŁ45 million to the development of community halls, sports and recreation facilities. Mayor of Thamesdown David Clahoim welcomed the new homes and the jobs the 100 acre employment site would bring. "1 am glad the Council and the developers have been able to agree as to how the expansion should proceed." Haydon Wick ward councillor and leader of the council Tony Mayer recalled the early battles between Thamesdown and the developers. "We fought the first plans. The scheme was too big, too soon and too quick. The 15

year time span is more realistic and I welcome the commitment to an integrated plan which endeavours to build communities as well as houses." Council chief planning officer Nick Davies said a lot had been learnt from the development of West Swindon which was being applied in the north. "The provision of social

It may be necessary to increase the number of hours." She said her committee would have to consider any proposal to redirect the post.

Delay for Grange Park compost scheme A plan to get Grange Park residents involved in a major composting scheme suffered a setback last month when the plan was referred back to Thamesdown Council's Public Works and Services Committee on 26 July - for the third time. The 1,800 households in Grange Park were due to receive leaflets in July asking them to get involved by: 1. composting kitchen waste in their own garden with free use of a garden compost container worth £30 for 6 months (after which they can buy it for £12);

The results of a trial involving over 300 householders who volunteered to sort through their domestic waste were released in July. 27% of the domestic bin is vegetable matter and can be composted 34% can be recycled through existing bottle, paper, can and textile banks. lithe majority of households in Thamesdown had a garden compost bin and took recyclable materials to a neighbourhood recycling centre, the Council would not have to use taxpayers money to pick up, transport and tip dustbin contents into landfill sites.

At present nearly 60,000 tonnes of waste is tipped into the Chapel Farm landfill site at Blunsdon every year. Thamesdown has produced an information pack on how to reduce the amount of material going to landfill. It includes a prize draw return card with a several compost boxes on offer. Council way off recycling target

Ann Billingham, Thamesdown Council's job sharing recycling officer, pictured right, has handed in her resignation. As a local campaigner forFriends of theEarth, she was employed three years ago to raise the Council's commitment to reducing waste and to meet the Government's targets on recycling. School's can collection schemes, the extension of neighbourhood recycling banks and community compost schemes are an example of her tireless efforts to raise interest in recycling issues. Why she is leaving the job is unclear. However it is suspected that ness to get behind recycling initiashe has tired of the Council's slow- tives.

Thamesdown Council needs to commit itself to comprehensive recycling schemes if it is to meetthe government 25% target for recyclable waste by Year 2000. These will involve both curb side collections and the use of neighbourhood recycling sites by people willing to take waste materials in their own vehicles. There are no curb side schemes

yet and self-delivery schemes to neighbourhood sites only add upto a 7% recyclable rate. People taking material to the Barnfield Road dump and the Boroughs bulk collection scheme adds a further 3%. There's a long way to go, there's a lot of material going into landfill sites and not a lot of time to achieve the desired target.

Music, Balloons and loads of fun at Lydiard The sweet soul sounds of Edwin Starr, Heatwave, Eddie Floyd and Geno Washington will be bursting out across Lydiard Park on Saturday 27 August. There's classical music with the Philharmonia Orchestra on Friday 26 and 80s hit band Squeeze on Sunday 28 August. Combined with balloon lift-offs every morning and a night glow on Monday 29 August, plus a huge number of displays, attractions and events during the day, the Bank Holiday weekend is set to be a busy time at Lydiard Park.

MGM summer of entertainment Some great films coming up says Corinne Glanville A number of films shown at MGM during July have been held open and continue to be screened in August - good news for cinemagoers as nowthere's even greater choice, especially if you have not seen any of the July favourites like The Flintstones and Thumbelina The middle of August brings the release of Wolf - a modern interpretation of the classic wolf man story. Jack Nicholson stars as Bill Randall, a New York book editor married to Charlotte (Kate Nelligan), an ill-fated wife if ever there was one. Michelle Pfeifferis aveterinary surgeon called Laura,

with whom Bill falls in love. Bill is bitten by a wolf and finds himself slowly transforming into one, not only physically but mentally and emotionally. As his character becomes more aggressive he begins to go afterthe top brass at his publishing firm. Up to about the third act, Nicholson has very little makeup but as histransformation from man to wolf develops, the skill of makeup artist Greg Cannom is clearly shown and the special effects are very good. Also new in August is the new MacCaulay Caulkin comedy Getting Even with Dad, dad being

the hapless Ted Danson of Cheers. With an abundant ponytail, he strikes a different character to his previous incarnations, as a crook trying to go straight - after one last job. But when his son Timmy (Culkin) is dumped on him, dad finds his plans go astray as the honest offspring does all he canto keep him from returning to crime. Baby's Day Out, directed by John Home Alone' Hughes, follows the hilarous trail of mayhem left by Baby Bink after he gives his kidnappers the slip. The baddies regret the day they set eyes on the toddler as he crawls across the urban jungle with them in pursuit.

Jason and Philip Beck were surprised to find themselves on the receiving end of a Relate/Link Magazine 'Say a Little Thank you' award in July.

Their mum, Linda, nominated them for the award because, for the past seven years, Philip and Jason have been looking after her following a serious car accident in which both Linda and Philip were injured. Linda has not been able to walk since the accident and she is constantly in pain. Philip fortunately, did recover from his injuries.

Many of you may know that Alex Sandell, West Swindon's Adult Education Organiser has retired from the College and gone off to her place in the sun in France. Pamela Flowerdew, the College's clerical assistant in West Swindon, has returned to the Wootton Bassett Office and Ferndale Offices to work. The Greendown Office will now be run by Enid Anderson as Adult Education Officer and Inga-Britta Currie Clerical Assistant who have been working out of the Marlborough Office until now. With additional help from Adult Education Centre Heads, Enid and Inga Britta will be running both offices. They look forward to a long, happy and fruitful association with students and tutors at classes across West and North Swindon. Education in Swindon: The Future

EXCLUSIVE

The arguments for Swindon managing its own affairs have been won. Once the proposals have been agreed by the Government, there will be a great deal of work required so that duties and responsbilities presently held by Wiltshire County Council can be transferred smoothly. Tony Mayer, Leader of Thamesdown Borough Council explains the principles by which education will be run. One of the success stories of the old Swindon Borough Council was its schools. People who had the privilege of attending or working in them at the time remember the high standards which existed. Our aim will be to recreate that success. Education will have a top priority in Thamesdown and although there is no 'pot of gold' any more, we will make sure that it gets its fair share of resources. At the moment Wiltshire County Council spends £1.5m, which should be spent in our schools, on schools in other parts of the county. Nursery education is particularly important.

All studies show that children who benefit from quality nursery education go on to do better throughout their school years. But we can benefit from education throughout our lives and that means a flourishing further and higher education sector. We have started this already, working with New College and Swindon College to bring a University to Swindon. June Bradley reports As so many of our members were away on holiday in June, those of us remaining had a very enjoyable evening out having a pub meal instead of our usual meeting. Our speaker at the July meeting will be Mrs M Beasant who will be telling us of her experiences of life in Saudi Arabia. The next meeting on 17 August is to be a practical evening when members will discuss and demonstrate their hobbies. Our craft and produce shows always prove what a talented group we are sothis should be a very interesting evening. Holiday green message for kids 'Going Green' is the theme for National Playday on 10 August and childrens holiday playschemes across Thamesdown will offer a variety of environment and kids-friendly activities. There will a competition for the bestgreen lunchbox and parents will be urged to walk or cycle to playschemes. Playschemes are open to all children between 5 and 14 years and run from 11am to 3pm. The Children Act restricts the numberof children that can be cared for. Parents or guardians must turn up with children on their first day of attendance to fill in a simple registration form and they should not assume there is space for their children each day until they have been seen through the door.

Big send off for the Big Adventure Children attending the town's first commercial after school club held a party attended by Rockin' Robin, the Swindon Town mascot, to off icially launch the club for 5 to 11 year olds. The BigAdventure Club, based at Greendown Community School, is the first in the town to be funded by the Wiltshire Training and Enterprise Council as part of the Government's Child Care Challenge. It was launched by Tracey and Peter Bailey from Grange Park after they visited Great Western Enterprise with an idea for a business. LocalLives Words around the world Earlier this year Robin Rowles from Chartdos Close, Grange Park started making contact with letter writers across the globe. I work full-time for PPS Chartered Accountants, in Old Town, Swindon, as an unqualified accountant, and in my spare time, I have developed a growing interest in writing letters to penfriends, worldwide through 'International Pen Friend s'. Within a short period of time I have quickly established a sincere persona lcorrespondence with six penfriends worldwide. I have already found it to be very interesting, educational and rewarding, so much so, that during the last couple of months, I have now been appointed as a club agent of '1FF' to help promote and represent this organisation, within the UK and Europe. Youngsters receive Duke's bronze award Six Greendown School students and one from Hreod Parkway received Dukeof Edinburgh's bronze awards fromThamesdown' s Deputy Mayor Bert Smith at an outdoor camp at Coate Water on 17 July. To achieve the award they had to carry out a variety of activities ranging from an overnight hike to community service, developing a hobby and a physical pursuit. The Coate Water camp gave a large number of youngsters the chance to try many Duke of Edinburgh activities like canoeing, radio controlled boating, air rifle shooting, orienteering, bird watching and camp skills, including cooking rabbit over wood fires. The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme operates at Greendown School and is available both to students attending the school and others aged 14 to 25 years who do not. The scheme is available to youngsters of all abilities. No special academic or physical skills are needed.
