North Swindon school proposed for West Another secondary school is being considered to take children from West Swindon. Officers from Wiltshire County CouncilEducationDepartmentare suggesting that by 1996, there will be too few places at presently designated schools - Bradon Forest, Greendown and Ridgeway - and are proposing to include Hreod Parkway to serve Roughmoor (Spattells /Pea tmoor). The officers have been meeting governors at the schools and have held two public meetings with parents who live in Freshbrook and Roughmoor to discuss the problem and their proposed solution. At the parent meetings Mr John Surowiec,Senior Education Officer responsible for Development and Planning, said the present admission arrangements have been in force since 1986 when Greendown School opened. But in 1996 the number of places at already designated secondary schools would be matched by the number of children moving on from West Swindon primary schools and the rural schools feeding Bradon Forest and Ridgeway. public gathering like the Wiltshire Festival. Festival sponsors Motorola have provided a great deal of information to help them. The students are also taking part in a competition to design a logo for the Wiltshire Festival's Children's Appeal. The winning entry will be printed on badges to be sold at the festival in aid of the appeal. After a short talk from Motorola balloon pilot John Clifford and an inspection of the basket and equipment by students, the balloon was inflated togivethema good chance to sketch and note important features. Motorola public relations manager Julian Long said he was very impressed how the school had integrated the festival into the curriculum. "There's writing, art, statistics and practical work going on; it's commendable how the staff have brought real world activity into school studies."

Out of West Swindon save Africa's national parks National Parks in Africa are under threat, so are the animals and plants to be found in them. So how would you react if someone offered you the chance of helping to save the world's National Parks with a bit of white water rafting down the Zambesi, or taking part in a foot safari in Zimbabwe on the side? Louise Wilkes reports. 'Conservation Direct' is a brand new organisation launched in June to utilise the skills and abilities of volunteers from Britain. It offers you the opportunity to embark on such an adventure as part of a team, after training and fundraising. The organisation has set up a number of teams around Britain, and the local one has been established right here in West Swindon.

Peter Scott, recently a Major in the Army's Logistics Corps, lives in Shaw and is one of Britain's eleven CD National Park liaison officers. He has the job of recruiting enthusiastic volunteers willing to contribute to the conservation of Africa's great wildlife parks. Unlike other organisations of its kind, 'Conservation Direct' is not a project limited to people of a certain age with certain skills. Anyone over 18 is welcome as past experiences in conservation work is not essential. Peter says anybody can join in. "We have three expeditions planned, all to the same project area - a three week preparation visit, a three month working expedition and then a maintenance visit later. So we need volunteers for different lengths of time. Some will have professional skills, others will have general abilities to offer." Peter firmly believes that taking part in the project will benefit young and old alike, providing people with a focus for their life skills, and an opportunity to meet new targets for themselves. However, anyone contemplating volunteering must be prepared for a challenge. "Westerners may think preservingAfrica's safari lands and wildlife is important, but park boundaries on maps mean little on the ground unless local tribes people see that they can benefit from tourists attracted to the parks. It requires some very subtle handling before we can get down to practical conservation work."

All the volunteers will undergo thorough preparation and will be expected to take part in a personal skills and team building exercises before going out to Africa. There is' also the question of money. Each volunteer will have to raise the cost of their trip through sponsorship and fund-raising. Training on going about this will also be given. As well as the practical projects in the Conservation Direct programme, white water rafting and safaris are also planned as recreation for the volunteers taking part. North Swindon school for west (continued from front page) Mr Surowiec said that Greendown had never been planned to cater for all West Swindon children and the Local Education Authority had originally proposed to expand Ridgeway and Bradon with permanent buildings, thus removing mobile classrooms. A new building providing 300 places in permanent accommodation at Ridgeway will open in September, but central government restrictions on local authority borrowing had blocked new buildings at Bradon Forest. The Department for Education has also demanded that surplus school places be utilised. There are currently 289 at Greendown and 470 at Hreod Parkway. Mr Surowiec said that future demand for school places could be met if mobile classrooms are retained at Ridgeway, and another nearby school be designated. He said that although Bradon Forest will soon be Grant Maintained, the school governors have indicated their willingness to operate within the County Council's admission arrangements. Free transport would continue to be provided to Bradon Forest and Ridgeway, but it would notbe available to Greendown and Hreod Parkway because they are within the statutory three mile limit. Parents at the Freshbrook meeting said the major problem was a lack of clear information on admissions procedures and the chances that their children had of entering the school of their choice. The Education Department undertook to produce better information for this autumn and organise admissions advice meetings for parents. At a meeting held at Brook Field School on 5 July, parents from Roughmoor expressed worries that their chances of getting children into Bradon Forest were being reduced. They felt that because a minority of children would attend Hreod Park-

way they would become isolated in the community. One parent said she had moved to an area served by suitable schools and objected to an arbitrary change in catchment areas. The LEA's proposals were 'very divisive.'

1. All children in West Swindon have a right to attend Greendown School. If it is over-subscribed the LEA will allocate a quota of places to each urban village. 2. If Ridgeway School is oversubscribed, priority would be given to children living inToothill and Westlea, and also those living in Freshbrook. 3. If there is too great ademandfor places at Bradon Forest, children living in Grange Park and Shaw would be given preference. Children from Freshbrook would no longer have priority. 4. Children from Rough moor would no longer have priority access to Bradon Forest and have Hreod Parkway as their designated secondary school. However, should places be available, they would have higher priority to Bradon Forest than children from Toothill, Westlea and Freshbrook. Safety of access and the lack of free transport to Hreod Parkway was raised as a problem. Parents also wanted to know how exam results and standards compared between schools. A report is due before the Wiltshire Education Committee in September. If the proposals are agreed, they will come into force for September 1994. However councillors might call for further investigation and new arrangements would be delayed a year.

George Gibson has been appointed as Free Church Minister in the Ecumenical Parish of West Swindon and the Lydiards with special responsibility for Toothill. George and his wife Tricia will be moving to Toothill in late August and the date of George's Induction Will probably be 11 September. George is a Scot, aged 45, and is a Minister of the United Reformed Church. We hope to publish more information about him in September. Meanwhile Toothill Church continues its work and worship. We had a good Concert and Gift Day on 22 May, which was successful in raising money towards essential repairs to the church. Brownies become first aiders Six months work on learning First Aid techniques at the 1st Freshbrook Brownie pack came to end when ambulance paramedic Jamie Smith from Freshbrook visited to examine their efforts. The Brownies demonstrated their knowledge of bandages and first aid techniques for him and all of them passed. The group has 22 girls and meets on Monday evenings at Freshbrook School. Elizabeth Watts from Godolphin Close, also a Greendown student, spent two weeks duringJuly inSanta Clara, California as a member of the Thamesdown Tigersharks swimming club's Great White training team. Elizabeth, 14 was one of seventeen swimmers who trained with the Santa Clara club and lived with local families. She trained in 95T weather and took part in an international match.

Sheila Mitchell reports on the brave efforts of DawnSouIsby to raise cash for a Third World Charity Earlier this year when the publicity for 'Red Nose Day' was reaching its zenith nine year old Dawn Soulsby from Moresby Close decided that she would like to so something for the Tear Fund Charity which is celebrating its twenty-fifth year. Her family is already connected with Tear Fund through their sponsorship of Kiako Doorie,a nine year old Kenyanboy who lives 60 miles south of the capital Nairobi. Dawn, who suffered from considerable hip pain for a large part of last year decided to do a sponsored swim and despite a recurrence of the pain which has dogged her life, she managed to swimtwenty lengths of the Link Centre pool, raising £91.20 in the process. Dawn and her family were invited to the Tear Fund H.Q. at Teddington where they were shown around the unit and saw the various aspects of the project's work. During the last twenty five years constructive aid has gone to many Third World countries which have been blighted by natural and man made disasters. Pop star Cliff Richard has long been associated with the organisation, and is one of its Vice-Presidents.

Children like Dawn have been encouraged to become involved in the various projects through the Youth and Student Section. Terry Tearaway, a cartooncharacterwhose adventures have thrilled youngsters since his introduction in 1978, characterises the influence of youth in Tear Fund. Dawn had hoped to be able to hand over her cheque to Terry Tearaway but as he was away on a mission she handed her cheque to Terry's boss Carol Allen who is head
of the Partnership Unit of Tear Fund. Dawn's money has gone to the Enkirgirri C D C project and Kiako Doorie and his family are to be the main beneficiaries. Dawn has been told that Kiako is to receive a bed, mattress, two sheets and two blankets whilst his family will receive two breeding heifers. The school which Kiako attends will also be receiving a wall clock. Dawn's twenty length swim will have helped Kiako and his family enormously.

The sun shone for the families of Westlea as they supported Westlea School fete. The theme for this year's fete was 'The Circus'. Sadly, some of the entertainers cancelled at the last minute but enthusiasm for all the other entertainments laid on for the day was not diminished. Sabrina Sheikh won the Talent Contest, dancing and singing as Pinnochio. The prize winners of the Fancy Dress competition were two infant pupils who took the theme of the afternoon to heart, Lesley Bannister dressed up as a lion and Christopher Lawrence as a lion tamer. The Jelly Eating contest was won by Charlie Hambidge and Geoffrey Swatton. Nicola Roger's hamster won the pet competition. Headteacher Neil Griffiths once again volunteered for Soak the Teacher. In what is now a popular annual event, Neil was soaked by wet sponges thrown at him by exuberant pupils and anyone else willing to pay up. Sponges were inadequate for some who threw buckets of water instead. 000 was raised and this year the money will be used to pay for some of the very basic requirements such as pencils and paper which the school needs to operate a sad indictement on the way our schools are currently being funded.

Swindon Town football club's marketing manager Janet Garrett from Whittington Road, Westlea was impressed when her son Lewis put a sponsorship package to her. He proposed that his Westlea school mates could raise sponsorship cash if Town players would be willing to take a training session. Four players agreed and came along after a tough day of pro-season training on 15 July. Other youngsters were able to have autographs and pictures taken on the touchline.

Plan to make Village Inn centre of the community The new landlords at The Village Inn at Shaw Village Centre are looking forward to meeting as many people as possible. Chris and Karen Richardson have been in the pub trade for four years and have transferred from an old village pub in Mangotsfield near Bristol Prior to that Chris was a Royal Marine Commando for 15 years and Karen was a secretary. Japanese day at Shaw school
Take to the Skies
Brook Field School in Shaw was taken over by Japanese mums on 25 June to give children an idea of Japanese life, language and culture. Thirty-five mothers came into school, many in traditional Japanese costume, along with Japanese children from other primary schools in the Swindon area to run a day's activities with Brook Field teachers and children. On Friday 25 June we had a musical evening to celebrate National Music Week. There was a choir, recorders and an orchestra. I played the piano in the orchestra. Other instruments were flutes, violins, trumpets, cornets, recorders, tuned and untuned
percussion. There was also a choir there. It was good fun singing!. Over a HUNDRED people came, so we were very nervous. Once we started it was okay. We had to practisea lot for it though. But in the end it was a good performance and all the adults enjoyed it a lot.

In May we were the only branch in Swindon to enter the annual InterOrganisational Craft Competition (WI, Towns womens Guild and Young Farmers Association). This year the theme was 'A Nursery Story' and we chose Goldilocks and the Three Bears. I can report we came 7th out of 38, which I think is pretty good. Well done to Alison and Sue. For our June meeting we had a demonstration of Sugaring, a method of hair removal which originated in North East Africa yonks
ago. I can thoroughly recommend the method, I've been using it for about four years now. In our July meeting on 21st, we'll be given a talk on Consumer Protection by Mr Taylor. It's a subject we need to take very seriously. I'll report on the evening in the next edition. Our meetings are held at Sunshine Room, Westlea School and we are next there on 20 September, 730pm. Youngsters prepared for battle, not football says coach A local junior football team manager has slammed demanding coaches and over enthusiastic parents who push young children too hard. Speaking at the AFC Greendown end of season players and parents evening at Shaw's Village Inn, attended by Swindon Town captain Colin Calderwood, manager Gary Williams said pressure is put on children to compete at the expense of developing skill and technique. He drew attention to poor performances by England team where the lack of skill and over-emphasis on physical ability in the English game have been exposed by other
countries, and said the focus should also be put on the youngest players. "The most important thing for nine to twelve yearolds is the development of basic skills like passing, dribbling and ball control," said Gary. "Kids are only young once and they must be allowed to enjoy playing. If they're good and become confident, then success will follow. "There's plenty of time to develop the competitive edge, but all too

"Some parents are just as bad. Skill takes second place to winning, there's too much emphasis on strength and size - even at this age, and they complain rather than encourage. The pressure they put on children and also on the managers is almost unbelievable." Gary also criticised the way football is organised for young children. "Children are expected to play on full sized pitches which are completely out of scale. You see a player win the ball, beat a defender and then have another fifty yards to run to the goal. Often only five players on each team will play the game whilst the others freeze." He called for junior league football to be organised on a 6 a-side basis where all players are involved on pitches more suitable to the physical abilities of children. "How can you expect a ten year old to defend goals used by grown men?," he said. 'The present system is designed to bum kids out. Junior football should be made relevant, it should give all players the chance to get involved in the game in any position. Better skills, technique and enjoyment should be the aim." There's life after dinosaurs says Lisa Clark Merchandisers must be licking their chops at the array of Hollywood movies released this summer for children. Once the kids tire oftheirJurassic Park dinosaur dolls, there will be plenty more movies - and related memorabilia to add to their toy box. Of the three children's movies that will be coming to MGM in August, one of the most interesting will be how directors Annabel Janke] and Rocky Morton, who together created the trend-setting Max Headroom series, bring a loveable pair of Italian plumbers to life by the Super Mario Brothers. It opened at the MGM on 9 July. A movie had to happen, of course. The characters, which, to date, have sparked more than 80 million Nintendo video game sales, can be seen in no less than one-in-three US households. (Funnily enough, about 35 per cent of American players are over 18!) Keen-eyed and dedicated Mario players will probably watch the movie more than once if their goal is to count all 100 game elements that were incorporated into the movie sets.
However, even if you've never played, you may still want to watch movie brother Bob Hoskins (short, moustachioed, down-to-earth Mario) and John Leguizamo (tall, thin, love-struck Luigi) battle Dennis Hopper (the evil Koopa, who tries to merge New York, Brooklyn, and Dinohatten, where dinosaurs never died, to his own villainous ends). Another action-packed children's movie, which opens at MGM on 6 August is Teenage Mutant Ninja Koopa the main-man lizard in Super Mario Bros.

New faces in church as team leader moves on Church in bloom St Mary's Church in Lydiard Park blossomed during the three day annual flower festival in early July, this year complemented by a Saturday afternoon fete. Each flower display designed by Roy and Heather Weaverillustrated The Life of Moses and there were tableaus made by the St Mary's youth group, Oliver Tomkins and Tregoze Schools. The proceeds from the festival will go towards the ÂŁ15,000 needed for structural repairs on the chair.
The church in West Swindon is being turned over! By mid-Octber, all the vacant positions in the West Swindon ecumenical team will have been filled with new ministers, getting to know each other and beginning to deliver a joint service to the community. This month Peterand Ruth Walker arrive to live and minister to the Westlea area. In September George Gibson becomes Free Church minister based at Toothill Church, and Andrew Hethrington, takes up post as the new Anglican team leader based a tHoly Trinity Church,Shaw. After eleven years, the present Anglican team leader Rev. John Flory, departs West Swindon for a rural parish near Corsham on 8 September, sad to make his farewells, butpleased to leave the churchready to deliver to a much more mature community compared to when he started in West Swindon. "It's only when I look back that I realise the enormous changes the area has gone through," said John. There were no new houses north of Shaw Ridge, none of Grange Park, and the ministers team consisted of two Anglicans, one Baptist, and a part time Methodist, sharingToothffl Church with Roman Catholics.

"I spent a lot of time in those early days visiting show homes and contacting incoming Christians who could see no obvious Church presence and were making for the nearest spire in the town. "I was impressed by the Thamesdown Council's community development efforts. Ourvision was to try and give the area some soul. Society has seen so many changes since the early 1980s and people have been under so much pressure, especially in West Swindon where they have been setting up home, often at a distance from family and friends. 'The 1980s values of individualism have failed many people and we have seen larger congregations since the recession started in 1989 as families have turned to the church for supportand to discover the Christian message." However John is concerned by how society is disregarding Christian teachings and guidance. "I have particularly enjoyed my governor's role at Oliver Tomkins Church Aided School where clear guidance is being given. Christians offer a very positive contribution to how we relate to each other, but so many people regard the Church as a kind of folk tradition. Some people expect to have children christened
because it's the thing to do, rather than on the basis of belief. But if we don't have a moral under-pinning in society based on the Bible's message, what do we believe in and what determines right and wrong behaviour?" For some, appointing three new ministers could be an upset to the continuity of local church life, but the disruption and the opportunity for a new start pleases John. "The church in West Swindon has concentrated on a developing community. Now we've also been able to rearrange staff appointments to fit the needs of a mature area. I'm delighted that we have been able to appoint Peter and Ruth to Westlea Church and my successor as Anglican team leader and rector will be based at Shaw, the largest worship centre, rather than out in a village. Rob Buries, who has been here for a couple of years, will continue to serve Freshbrook and Grange Park from St Mary's in Lydiard Park "1 have really enjoyed the challenge of working with so many others to establish a community of faith within the wider community here. The task for the new team will be to enable the local Church to share the good news of God's love, and in his name to provide fellowship and support that people need."

New Westlea Vicar introduces himself Westlea and Eastleaze have never had their own vicar before, so am delighted to be their firstTeam Vicar. I am the Revd Peter Walker and with my wife Ruth and our daughter Joanna (5 months) we have just moved from Bradford. Unusaily, both Ruth and lare ordained, and in the next few months Ruth will also be starting work here. In West Swindon and the Lydiards, christians from different denominations work together- Baptist, Church of England, Methodists and members of the United Reformed Church. In the past my colleague, the Revd John Flory, has looked after the Church that meets every Sunday in Westlea School, he has done this in addition to other responsibilities. Now lam pleased to build upon his good work I hope to be able to meet many people in this area of West Swindon and if there are ways in which I can help please do not hesitate to ask. Above all, I do not regard myself as a special person just because I wear a dog-collar. I am one christian among many in this church, but I do have a special responsibility- to teach about Jesus Christ.

All classes take place at Greendown Community School in Grange Park unless indicated otherwise. Outside the College, Greendown is one of the best adult learning centres in North East Wiltshire. It offers a pleasant, modern environment with up-to-date equipment, daytime and evening refreshments for adult learners, evening duty staff, including a receptionist and weekday purpose-built childcare facilities. There was such an excuilentresponse from the short article about house security shutters in the June edition of The Link that Outlook Security of Barnfield Road has kept their special offer going. The company is looking for more showhomes and will fit the shutters free of labour charge. The shutters are the ultimate in home security, offering a visible burglar deterrant. Townswomen's Guild Sgt John Wickham was our speaker for July, talking about 'Crime Prevention'. He told us how to protect ourselves at home and when we go out. He also told us how to guess the age of people in their homes by the plants on the window sills! There will not be a Guild meeting in August, but we will be having a garden party and a buffet lunch. Top award for Guider A local Girl Guide has achieved the highest award available to guiders, the first in West Swindon to gain the Badon Powell Trefoil. Claire Colbert, 15, from Spa rcells was presented with her award by Chris Lockett, 1st Westlea Guide Leader, inJulyatUpperShawFarm. Claire achieved all the awards and badges by the time she was thirteen, two years early than is expected. To complete the Trefoil, she learnt to canoe, camped out in the Brecon Beacons during the winterand went rock climbing, shooting and hiking. She also had to complete projects on the European Community and the history of guiding. She left the Guides shortly after completing the work and become a young leader with lstWestlea Brownies. The Bradon Forest School student has just taken her GCSEs and is now thinking about working for the Claire Colbert receiving her award from 1st Westlea Guide Leader Chris Lockett Queens's Guide Award.

Big problems from humans at Lydiard
Free course run by the WEA Swindon Women's Branch Starts 15 September 9.30am - 3.30pm This ten week course is designed for women who have been away from paid employment for a while and are thinking of returning to work. They may feel uncertain about today's job market, what skills are required and what they can offer a prospective employer. Ina relaxed, informal and student -centred atmosphere, they can assess themselves and be helped to come to a decision about what jobs might suit them, whether to do some training, or perhaps acquire some qualifications. The course also offers practical assistance on producing a CV, filling in application forms and a chance to practice interview techniques. Students are also offered a genuine employer-based work experience placement in a work area of their choice. On the last course we even found a placement for a student who was interested in working as an ammatherapist! The course is in the daytime and child care is provided - all completely free of charge. If there are enough interested women in West Swindon, it would be possible to run the course in the area. There is a 'taster' session at the Community Suite, Link Centre on 12 August where women can come along to hear more about the course content without committing themselves at all. Again the session is free and limited child care is available. Humans make a bigger mess than dogs says mother of three children and dog owner Glynnis Beaumont from Cabot Drive, Grange Park. As a daily user of Lydiard Park, she was appalled by the amount of garbage left by park users during the end of June sunny weather. "The amount of rubbish which humans leave strewn around is just amazing," said Glynnis. "land many other dog owners use the park regularly and we feel a certain ownership for its care. The majority are responsible and do not allow our dogs to mess in areas used by people, but I have become very angry by the behaviour of other users. "The Link often publishes letters about irresponsible dog owners, but people have to look at their own behaviour. Many of the Lydiard Park users don't seem to have any concern for it. The plastic, packets, cigarette ends, soiled nappies, sanitary towels and condoms left behind are just disgusting. And the damage to the trees is very upsetting "It is possible to be a parent, a dog owner and a responsible citizen. Why can't all people show concern for their environment?" ParkRangerMikeNewtonagreed that litter left by Lydiard Park users is a major problem. "The condition of the park on a Monday morning after a busy weekend is very poor. It takes a groat deal of work to clear up. "I would appeal to people coming to Lydiard to think about what they're doing and take their rubbish home with them." He said that disposable nappies were a major problem and mothers often left them where children had been changed. There is a baby change room in the Visitor Centre.

In the May issue (134) of your magazine the article titled 'Avoid carbuylag rip offs' caught my eye. For three months I had been looking for a larger secondhand family car and had been lured into looking at a lot of estate cars for which the vendors proved to be making false claims and asking high prices. I becameconfused and disillusioned. So I rang the number at the bottom of your article and got the most civilized and plain-spoken reply I have ever had from anyone in the motor trade. Later, when one of the partners of Hollyan:1 Motors came round to see me, the same high level of civility, plain speaking and sound information continued. And plenty of enthusiasm too, but sans slimy

With reference to the article in the July edition 'Playground objections,' yes, we do object. Virtually evelyone present at the meeting about the Middleleaze play area gave the reason for buying their property was because of this nice open area. Does it not seem strange that nobody's solicitor was informed of a proposed playground? I suggest this information was deliberately kept from US.
There are quite a few play areas with swings, etc, all within a short distance from this proposed site. Children need open space to run about in just as much as expensive equipment. They come here to fly their kites, ride up and down the mounds on their mountain bikes, chase around with their dogs. In winter when it snows, it's lovely to watch families on their tobbogans on the slopes. Most parents these days are reluctant to let their children out of their sight, which is why whenever we have taken visiting grandchildren to any of the playgrounds

Strange then, that the residents of Middleleaze are complaining about proposals to build a new play area in Middleleaze Parkway. Most of the meeting in May were parents of young children and with the exception of two or three, nobody felt the need for the Middleleaze play area. Directly under the article we read that Spareells are badly in need of a play area. Why can't Thamesdown Council agree to make the funds available for that instead and make a lot more people happy. That surely is more important.

Pets get six years experience A care service for pets in local homes celebrates its sixth year this summer. Runby Sheila Mitchell from Westlea, Pets-At-Home operates only in West Swindon so that she can provide a personal service. She came up with the idea when she realised that many people moving into the growing area did not have friends, neighbours or relatives readily available, or willing, to look after pets whilst they are away. Whilst cats can be boarded at a cattely, moving goldfishes, hamsters and birds around can be more problematic. Sheila does not look after dogs which she believes require more attention than a twice daily visit. Over the years, Sheila has developed a large client list who have realised that keeping pets in their home environment is best for them as well removing a worry for the owners. "Cats especially like to remain on their home territory," says Sheila. "Some know me so well now that they will greet me as I get out of the car - even if I'm visiting somebody else. They all associate me with food." Sheila seldom has any problems with the animals she looks after and
Randy Rowland has an eye for pussy Amongst the dozens of animals Sheila Mitchell has cared for, her favourite is Rowland the one-eyed Randy Rabbit. If he's out of his hutch with a cat is in the garden, Rowland will hop across and try to mount it. Despite losing an eye and lots of fur from cats claws, Rowland's ardour is as strong as ever and he always tries to get it on. And the cats keep coming back.

has only called out a vet ori three occasions in six years. A further advantage of using the Pets At Home service is the extra security a home visitor gives. Sheila once had to call the police to investigate a burglary which may have remained unnoticed until the owners came home. On another occasion she had to cope with a burst water tank. The bedroom ceiling was on the floor and the poor cat had to be rescued from the arm of a chair as the water level rose round it. Sheila was able to put things into some sort of orderbefore the owners returned; in fact the cat moved in with her while the house was repaired. Sheila takes pride in providing a complete service. As well as a feeding and caring for pets she opens and closes curtains, leaves on lights, removes newspapers from letter boxes and waters indoor plants - a 'good neighbour service.'
