New hazard on danger road The appearance ofanew telephone box on Cartwright Drive, Shawls, once again, causing concern about safety to pedestrians in the area. The box is located on the crown of a bend at the eastern end of Cartwright Drive, adjacent to a large play area and opposite the entrance to Worlidge Drive. Jane Hillier, who lives across the road from the newly installed box, contacted The Link to point out the additional dangers created by its siting. Jane has been featured in The Link on a number of occasions expressing her worries about the hazards to pedestrians and drivers using the road. Cartwright Drive was planned with wide sweeping curves to slow drivers down. However they seem to be encouraged to go faster even though the maturing trees and shrubs next to the road have reduced visibility. The construction of a large play area on theothersideof Cartwright Drive eighteen months ago also caused anger amongst residents

who fear for children's safety as they try to cross the road. The arrival of the BT box is the final straw for Jane. "It's a stupid place to put it. We might need a public telephone but how did they decide that was the place to put it.
"Anybody who stands on the curb and sees the traffic shooting by, and then tries to cross Cartwright Drive, would realise that it's a very dangerous place. Continued on page 2

At a site meeting on Cartwright Drive, BT Payphones Planning Officer Bev Wood told The Link that there had been a request for more public telephones in Shaw and that all legal permissions had been obtained. "We are required to seek advice and agreement from the highway authority before an installation takes place. It would cost ÂŁ4,000 to move the box," he said. Thamesdown Council's Highways Manager Geoff Bryant said the present position of the telephone was considered the best from a visibility point of view when BT made the request to site the box. He agreed that shrubs need cutting back to improve sight lines and he would ask the Traffic Department to look at whether speed restricting measures could be introduced.

National Music Day atthe beginning of July was celebrated in Freshbrook by a mid-summer sing song of Christmas Carols, accompanied by tea and mince pies. Thamesdown North District Cub Scout Leader Sheila Leighfield said that the District Scouts had decided to celebrate the event by filling the day with music, so she gathered friends and neighbours in Castle Dore, Freshbrook to make music during her allocated time.

Parents say 'no' to opt-out Freshbrook School parents have rejected the idea of breaking away from Wiltshire County Council as a result of a ballot conducted by the Electoral Reform Society. The result announced on 3 August showed that 442 (62.5%) out of the 707 ballot papers sent out were returned. Two were spoilt and out of the 440 counted, 184(41.8%) voted yes and 256 voted no (58.2%) to the proposal by the governors to make the school grant maintained. Bob Pixton, the only governor to vote against the opt out proposal, said, "I'm pleased that the parents have rejected the uncertainty of direct control from Whitehall and have preferred to stay with local democratic control of the County Council. I think the rushed ballot and the problems on the governing body contributed to the decision." Governor Tim Dodd said the majority of governors would like to thank all parents who voted. He expressed concern that 38% were not bothered about their children's education and had not voted. "We are obviously very disappointed about the result. "However the scaremongering tactics employed by Bob Pixton and others appears to have swayed parents to reject the proposal to go grant maintained. Their arguements were groundless as the Government's recent White Paper on the future of education set out. All schools will have to opt out in future. "This decision has costFreshbrook School £100,000 which could have been spent on children's education. In the light of Wiltshire County Council's £4m overspend, I worry where the next cuts will be made." He explained that the ballot timingwas decided afteradvice from the Electoral Reform Society and the Department for Education that it had to commence in term time. If it had started in the September term, the ballot would not have been completed within the statutory six month period from the governors first decision to seek a ballot.

Busy birthday celebration A Lion dance by staff from the Chinese Experience restaurant gave the new Tregoze Primary School in Grange Pa rk good luck for the future at its official open day on 4 July. Children from each class presented some of their work in the open air and they all sang a song composed for the occasion. Before a special birthday cake was cut, each of the 159 children presently at the school, armed with scissors, cut a yellow ribbon which encircled the whole school. A formal touch to the occasion the 240 place school which opened was provided by Marjorie Whit- its doors in September last year. The day ended with a barbeque worth, chair of Wiltshire County Council, who unveiled a plaque in and a barn dance.

Happy ending, new beginning Readers of The Link in August 1988 will remember the story written by Sharon Lawson-Duckett of Freshbrook. As a 17 year old, she bravely took over our 'Day in the Life' page to describe her experiences as a very youngmothercopingwithKayleigh, her eighteen month old toddler. Happily, five years on Sharon and Andy Chick also from Freshbrook were married on 13JuneatStMary's, Lydiard Park, with Kayleigh as bridesmaid. "Five years ago I just wasn't ready formarriage," said Sharon. "Getting pregnant was a shock for me, my parents and Andy's as well. The whole world seemed to be collapsing, but I had wonderful support from my parents and Kayleigh has kept us all going through the difficult times. "All my school friends loved seeing Kayleigh as a baby but they didn't realise how hard it was to be a teenager caring fora child. Most men would have shirked their responsibilities but Andy's been so patient and has absorbed my anger, frustrations and complaints -and he still wanted to marry me. We remained close friends after Kayleigh was born and it was only after we took a six month break from each other that we realised that we loved each other and wanted to be together as parents. We've matured, we're stronger people now." Sharon's mum Jenny said the family had grown closer because they had had to work their problems out together. "We all been involved in sorting things out and it's always been Kayleigh who has put us in our place if one of us was getting too

Sharon, being mad about horses, naturally travelled to and from her weddingby horseand carriage. The reception for 100 people was held at Freshbrook Community Centre. "It was a wonderful day," said Sharon. "Family and friends were so kind and helpful and Kayleigh was so excited to be at her mummy and daddy's wedding. It's been lovely to have her involved in the important events." Sharon and Andy, a soldier with the Royal Corps of Signals, have moved into quarters at RAF Hullavington, conveniently close for them to popback to see their parents. In these times when family breakup is so common and where children are so affected by instability in relationships, we've been glad to be able to follow the life of a family which has managed to come together through great difficulties.

Tom moves on Popular teacher Tom Harman left Westlea School at the end of July. Originally from Birmingham, Tom joined the school five years ago and achieved the position of deputy head eighteen months ago. He is moving on to another deputy headship in Cambourne, Cornwall. Tom was well known in other West Swindon schools for organising the schools football competitions and the summer area sports day. • Westlea School head teacher Neil Griffiths was due to start a year training teachers in North Carolina, USA in September, but declined to go when told that five teachers would have to be made redundant in a massive programme of public spending cutbacks to pay for him.
Fete pays for much needed school equipment £2,500 was raised at Westlea School fete at the end of June which is to be spent on a video recorder, tape recorder, a new television and a computer monitor
Firemen raise cash The firemen from Westlea Fire Station presented the proceeds of a tin shaking day to members of the Swindon Sudden Deaths Syndrome Support Group in July. Altogether £654 was raised at the West Swindon Centre on 13 June for the group which provides support for people who lose a child suddenly. The group is a member of the Foundation for the Study of Infant
Deaths which is celebrating its twenty first year with an appeal for £1 million for further research into why children die suddenly. DrCarolineJackson visited our class for the morning. She showed us two maps of Europe. The difference between the two was that the out of date map showed West and East Germany and the other showed them combined. She talked about the Euro Parliament and a bit of her private life. I found out that she lives in a flat in London and she also has one in Brussels. That is because she travels a lot to Brussels where the M.Ps. discuss most things. She can speak French, German, Italian and Danish. She is against animal testing and whaling which she said should be stopped altogther, not just in Iceland. Dr Jackson also explained how the European Parliament works and about simultaneous translation. I also found out that Finland,Sweden and Switzerland want to join the E.C. and thereareonly two alphabets used in the twelve countries. After Dr Jackson's visit ten children in the class went to Asda to do questionnaire. Weasked people if they know who their M.E.P. is, how many countries there are in the European Community and how many Euro M.Ps. there are in the U.K. I got toask2O people in4Ominutes. Some people had no time to answer the questions. At first I was quite nervous but I soon got used to the idea of asking people questions. My friend Sarah and I made a graph showing the percentage of people who got our questions right. I'm afraid not many did.

New Assistant Librarian introduces herself There's another new face behind the enquiry desk at West Swindon Library; myname is ChristineOwen and I'mthe newAssistantLibrarian. I have only worked in Wiltshire libraries since February, prior to that I was librarian at Christchurch Library in Dorset where the library is very similar to West Swindon, busy and lively. I'm looking forward to learning about West Swindon and meeting the people who visit us. I am also the librarian for the mobile library and am planning some trips out in August, so perhaps I'll meet you then. One aspect of the library I am especially interested in is attracting new readers, people who, maybe think that the library is full of dull boring books none of which will interest them. The Swindon Film Society starts its new season of films on 2 September and twelve films will be shown by April l993atthe Arts Centre, Devizes Road usually on a Wednesday evening starting at 7.45pm. The aim is to show films which you are unlikely to be able to see at other local venues and the programme always includes some foreign subtitles films. This year for example there will be films from France, Italy, China, Australia and a highly acclaimed Japanese version of Macbeth. A week at the West Swindon Family & Community Project Gina Dennis describes life at a local family support project Monday morning - time for our Team Meeting, when the Project Leader (John Jenkins), Project Worker (myself - Gina Dennis) and Admin Worker (Pam Utting) get together to check diaries and share concerns and information on what is happening in the Project. At the same time, in the room next door, our Advice Point is busy helping people to sort out their problems with Welfare and Disability Benefits, Housing and other financial worries on a confidential, one to one basis. (This service is also on offer on Wednesday and Friday mornings.) Generally, Monday is a quiet day in which to catch up on what has not been done and plan for what needs to be done. On Tuesdays, the "House" stretches at the seams! In the upstairs meeting room a tutor fromSwindon College is working with a mixed group of Wordpower and ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) students, improving language and number skills. Downstairs in our Creche (which is free to parents participating in activities at the Project) a group of under-fives is printing pictures with sponges, helped by the Creche workers. At 10.30 what little space is left is taken over by "Better Halves", an informal group set up to respond to the needs of single parents. This week their coffee and chat session is joined by a representative from "Gingerbread", with whom there is an ongoing link. Recent sessions have also included a visit from an advisor from
Thamesdown Law Centre who was invited by the group to give information on the forthcoming changes in law relating to maintenance payments and benefits. Wednesday morning is a drop in Coffee Morning run by the Project and is particularly useful as a time when people new to the "House" can get to know us and find out what else is going on. Some weeks there is a "Bring and Buy Sale" during Coffee Morning, at which nearly new clothes are on sale for next to nothing.

AUTUMN 92 & SPRING 93 NEW SEASONS, NEW OPPORTUNITIES Why not Progress Through Learning in West Swindon? Swindon College is attempting to make local learning opportunies relevant to people living and/or working in the area, and as easy as possible to take up. Over the next three pages you will find a complete guide to all the daytime, evening and weekend Adult Community Education courses. All classes take place at Greendown Community School in Grange Park unless indicated otherwise. Outside the College, Greendown is one of the best adult learning centres in North East Wiltshire. It offers a pleasant, modern environment with up-to-date equipment, daytime and evening refreshments for adult learners, evening duty staff, including a receptionist and weekday and weekend purpose-built childcare facilities. The College's West Swindon Area Office is based at the school.
CHILDCARE Childcare is available for a small additional fee at all daytime activities.
HOW TO ENROL FOR COURSES By post, pick up an enrolment form at the West Swindon Library at the Link Centre and return by 28 August to the Adult Community Education Office, Greendown School, Grange Park * At the enrolment days in September listed below: Wed. 2nd Wootton Bassett School 6pm - 8pm Sat. 5th Greendown School, Grange Park lOam - 2pm Tue. 8th Swindon College, Regents Circus 12noon - 8pm Wed. 9th Swindon College, Regents Circus 12 noon - 8pm Tues. 15th Hreod Parkway School, Moredon 6pm - 8pm Wed. 16th Commonweal School, Old Town 6pm - 8pm Fri. 18th WH Smith, Regent Street lOam - 3pm Please remember that all courses are filled on a first come-first served basis. It is advisable to enrol early.
PAYMENT May be made by cash, cheque, Access or Visa Cash is only acceptable when payment is made in person Cheques should be made to Wiltshire County Council' and sent with your completed enrolment form When using Access or Visa, please make sure that the name and address given is exactly that known by the credit card company. Any discrepency will invalidate your enrolment. Full refunds will be paid only to students on a course which is cancelled. Other refunds are at the discretion of the College.

Stepping to fitness
Skate championships at Link Centre The second ever British Novice Ice Skating Championship at Link Centre, sponsored by Burmah Castrol, takes place Monday 7 September, 5pm 10pm The competition is aimed at boys aged 14 years and below and girls, aged 13 years and below. Competitors will be travelling from all over the United Kingdom to skate in: Pairs, Individuals, Free Skating or Dance. All skaters will have already reached a very high standard of skating for their age and many will hopefully go on to international level. -
Bernadette Cowap ,centre, with two step students TheStepReebokfitness programme run by Bernadette Cowap is expanding to Toothill Community Centre. Two one hour classes are held on Wednesday evenings at 7pm and 8pm. She already runs busy classes at Freshbrook School on Monday 7.30pm and 8.30pm and Thursday at 7pm and 8pm. The programme works every major muscle group and burns lots of fat. It's designed not to put too much strain on the body and also to be great fun. To reserve a step, call Bernadette on 0865 864182. -

Hospital radio volunteers wanted Hospital Radio Swindon celebrated its twenty fifth year at the end of June with a marathon fifty hour broadcast to patients in Princess Margaret and Princess Alexandria Hospitals. The station broadcasts a wide variety of shows seven days a week and is always interested in new volunteers who can help with some aspect of the operation, from maintaining equipment through to presenting programmes on air. The staff at West Swindon Health Centre are taking anew approach to helping parents having children. They're going into the video lending business. Two titles are available at present: • The Pregnancy Video Guide describes the changes which go on during pregnancy, child birth and maternity care, the role of the Midwife and Health Visitor, and introduction to breast feeding. • The Baby Care Guide includes information on breast feeding, coping at home with the common problems faced by new parents, how to recognise baby ailments, the different stages of development a baby goes through, and when to start mixed feeding. Whilst skipping through the FM airwaves to decide between Radio I and (deep voice) 'the new GWR,' The Link magazine transistor has twice in the last few months bumped into very strange emissions. The music is up to date but the verbal links between tracks are pretty amateurish. Who are these people? They call themselves 'Power FM' and on one occasion it was 'Grange Park Radio.' But when they said'here's the news,' out spouted the fruity tones of BBC Wiltshire Sound, we became quite confused.

Turning local health services over to trust management Anne Lubin of the NHS Support Federation reports on a meeting to discuss the issues
About 100 members of the public came to the Pilgrim Centre on 22 July to hear the Swindon Health Authority discuss its attitude to the opting out of local health services. The feeling round the table was that the General Election result made it inevitable and opposition would be impractical. It was claimed that the good relations between staff and management would continueunder Trust management. Accountability to the public via the Community Health Council would not be interrupted. The Acute Unit Manager David Pokora said discussions had been held with managers and staff representatives and all staff written to. Open meetings with staff all over the area had been attended by 500 altogether. He claimed, whilst most were at first apprehensive, they agreed to an expression of interest in Trust status. The chairman Joel Joffe, said Swindon Trusts would maintain information. "We don't believe in competition between services except
tha t of providing the best attention". Accordingly the Regional Health Authority would be pressed to appoint the right people for Trust Boards which should include local organisations. Swindon will take a positive view, providing good services and continued collaboration between units and the Health Authority. The NI-IS Support Federation is planning a public meeting in September to inform people of the fine details of Trust Status. Lions set to go The new West Swindon Lions Club is nearing the point where it is chartered asa seperateorganisation. At present it is part of the Swindon Lions Club. Enabling effective learning A new driving school based in Toothill is becoming well known for quality tuition. The ABLE driving school was started a few months ago by Derek Moore of Belsay who is putting his 27 years of experience in the Royal Corps of Transport to good use in civilian life. Looking at environmental problems in Spanish Year 7 students at Greendown School ended their year by putting on a Spanish exhibition for parents and friends. On display was project work illustrating the problems of sea pollution, all in Spanish of course. The students also made sound and video tapes describing themselves and their work in Spanish. 0793 421125 Young after school club members watch the JCB creating their pond A local building company came to the rescue of youngsters carrying outa n environmental project during July. The children who attend the Toothill After School Club are carrying out a long term project to turn the grounds oftheToothilFarm Centre into a wildlife haven, but the idea of digging a pond by hand was a bit daunting to the six to ten year olds. As everybody knows, digging the clay in West Swindon is a back breaking job. However a call by club development worker Karen Drake to local heavy plant operators Hibberds came up trumps when they offered to send a man and his JCB to scoop out the dirt for the kids. "He did a great job and has saved us hours of work," said Karen. "With the helpofHibberds, weare nowable to get on with filling the pond, doing
the landscaping and seeing the wildlife develop." The After School Club is keen to hear from any local people who can help with the next stages of the environmental project. The club runs between 3pm and 615pm on five afternoons a week during term time. Qualified staff supervise and organise the children in games, projects and quiet indoor activities. Costs vary according to the number of sessions required and needs are discussed with the families interested in a place at the club. Children of working parents can be collected from Toothill and Oliver Tomkins Schools. IsambardKingdomBrunel returned briefly to Swindon on 17 July to support Swindon in its drive to attract more tourists. He spoke with enthusiasm for the town as a centre for tourism at the launch of a new visitor's glossy colour guide book which describes the entertainment, sport, parks, shopping, architecture, the places to stay and to eat available in and around Swindon. About a million people visit the town annually generating some £13 million. The guide aims to increase these numbers by promoting Swindon as a tour base for Wiltshire's historic sites and the Cotswolds. Brownies aid animals For their latest venture 1st Shaw Brownies recently held a Summer Fair to raise money for the RSPCA. The Brownies took the major part in organising the event, from deciding who they wanted to raise money for, through the planning and organisation of the stalls, to actually running these stalls on the day. Although the Fair was rained off on the day originally planned,
parents and friends came to support the Brownies when it was finally held a week late, enabling them to raise £50 for the RSPCA and have a lot of fun in the process. lstShaw Brownie Pack continues to thrive and with enough girls currently on the waiting list to fill another pack, anyone interested in becoming a leader would be warmly welcomed. Toddlers raise cash
No lunch for OAPs
Members of Buttons, a new parent and toddler group, have been busily raising money to buy equipment for its activities at the Roughmoor Social Hall on Swinley Drive, Pea tmoor. In June the children raised £708 by taking part in a sponsored toilet roll unravel with rolls and prizes donated by Andrex. A further £77 was raised at a cake and equipment stall at the Link Centre. The Freshbrook Community Centre lunch club which has been closed for some months will notbeopening on Friday 4 September as intended. Unfortunately there are not enough helpers available to re-start it. Hotel sponsors school project It was a fun last day of term for a group of Year 8 Ridgeway School students. They spent it preparing dinner in the kitchens at theSwindon Marriott Hotel and using the hotel's swimming pool and fitness facilities. All the thirteen year olds at the school were set the task of designing a new theme restaurant for a technology project sponsored by the hotel. Working in groups, they had to research and design therestaurant, recipes, tableware, menu cards and staff uniforms. The group chosen to have put in the most innovative and interesting ideas fortheirworkon 'TheCountiy Bumpkin' restaurant had thechance to put on a display at the Marriott and to help the chefs prepare a meal which was served to parents and hotel visitors during the daily Happy Hour meal.

Good listeners wanted Swindon & District Branch of the Samaritans are looking for new volunteers to help maintain its 24 hour, 365 days a year confidential service. Samaritans are available every day and night to either answer the telephone or talk to callers face to face at the Samaritan Centre in Curtis Street. They are there for people who Troy be feeling lonely, desperate or suicidal and for whom it may help to talk about these feelings. They do not offer advice but by listening, breathing space can be
given to people to make their own choices. Training courses will be commencing in October after an initial interview and selection day. New volunteers are needed for daytime and overnight sessions. Staff and customers at Freshbrook's Cut 'n Dry hair salon celebrated ten years in business at the end of July with the cutting of a big birthday cake. Sue Collins started her business with two staff and keeping up with theexpansion of West Swindon, now has six stylists working with her.
To spread the birthday message fa rand wide, Cut 'n Dry are offering £5 off perms over £40 and a cut and blow dry normally priced at £14.75 for £12.95. "It's a nice area to work; we meet so many friendly people," said Sue Collins. "We're looking forward to the next ten years."

The problem with your article is that you mention a number of affected parties yet do not balance the article with a response from the Residents themselves. Does this mean your magazine still finds it impossible to believe they are right? TheResidents have always received good press from the various papers and we have always given the facts as we saw them without bringing in any emotional argument. Your magazine however chose to place the first advertisement for the pitch exactly opposite the article you wrote giving our side of the argument. Now then, perhaps the readers won't notice anything strange about me using the word 'you' because they think amaddressing the Editor but do they all realise that you are Mr R Ogle, Editor, Owner (presumably profit making) of the Link magazine but also Chairman of the school governors of Greendown School and
I also wonder if the readers know that Mr A Brown resident of Gower Close and President and Captain of the Swindon Hockey Club, which despite a 70 year existence that takes ma world warand a coupleof world recessions is likely to close due to the loss of an 18 month old facility, only became a resident in February 1992,16 months after we started our action and after it had been well publicised that our houses were dramatically lower than the area's market value and that is after the recession has been taken into consideration. The other affected party is the school itself that repeatedly says the children will suffer, yet I am sure your readers will be interested to know that we have recorded probably 98% of games played on the pitch and the ratio of school pupils to community children to adults from all over the country is incredibly low, the commercial value of the pitch outweighing the school or community child's needs. Now if you wish to get the readers from an emotional viewpoint and
reader buying their own home considering the following? What is it like having their houses lit like daylight until 9pm and later if allowed. Orhow about every reader buying their own home having to listen to shouting, swearing and hockey balls banging every Saturday, Sunday and weekday with relentless monotony when trying to sleep, rest, study and garden all 30 feet from the 6 worst affected households. Of the original 5 couples that formed the committee as representatives of the original 100 signatories in opposition to the lights and pitch, 3 have moved, 2 couples with proven loss of equity over and above the losses felt by everybody in this recession. One couple rented theirhouse and left the area because as with the others they could not stand the diminishing living standard. The others have stayed but all are still fighting the injustice and I would suggest that every reader buying their own home will be able to identify with the Residents more thanwith those using the pitch. On behalf of my grandson mayl ask if any mother in West Swindon whose son attends Ridgeway School came home on Thursday 16 July with an extra pair of Reebok trainers marked on one side by a motorbike kickstart, and also a small hole made by buck shot. Both are very distinctive marks. His pocket money also disappeared from his bag, this I'm sorry to say is not the first time. It was very upsetting. He had been awarded the day before with The Allied Dunbar Achievement Certificate at the school. He has attended Ridgeway since he came from Wales last December and was so glad about the award, but losing his possessions took the shine off his pleasure. His mother had to make up her mind, new shoes or his holiday to Wales which was booked. He chose the holiday with not much pocket money, but with a despondent heart to think his new friends had betrayed him. But he is a good Christian, and forgives them. Readers will be aware of the injunction broughtagainst Wiltshire County Council and the Chair of the School Governors regarding the use of Greendown's 'Astro Pitch'. The school has been restricted in its use the pitch to only twice a weekbeyond 5pm. This restriction means that our football and hockey teams will have nowhere to play. For this reason, and because the school cannot foot the bill for transporting teams to other schools, they will be cut. This would be a great shame as Year 11 have won most of their league games since using the astro turf, and Year 10 have only lost two games. Alotof talent will be under-developed - a ludicrous situation considering Britain should be encouraging people with good sports ability. The astro turf is unique to West Swindon and is only one of three in the whole of Thamesdown. If community based teams cannot use the pitch, they too will have to close. Not only does sport in WestSwindon face a grim prospect, but the school will lose the revenue generated from the use of the pitch. This is critical as vital equipment needed will not be bought. 840 students signed a petition to support the continuation of use of the pitch, which highlights the sense of frustration felt by pupils. In addition, a further 600 signatures from parents were collected. These included two who had initially signed the residents' petititon but are now supporting the school's view.
Telethon Fundraising spoilt From S Frith, Bonner Close, Grange Park
DuringTelethon weekend the Duke of Edinburgh Award Group based at Greendown, after weeks of hard work, ran a Challenge Day at Lydiard Park and with the support of GWR and teams from local firms raised a considerable amount of money for charity. What a pity that the Orienteering Game was spoilt by those who saw fit to steal the orange and white control flags, canes and needle punches that were set out around the Park area, in some cases deliberately destroying the punch before tossing it away. This entailed some of the money raised having to be spent replacing the expensive stolen controls and punches, which were on loan. If these people have no interest in helping others less fortunate, is it too much to ask that they refrain from vandalising others efforts.
