Playscheme changes venue West Swindon's free summer playscheme for fives to 12 year olds - WASPS - is well into the second of the four weeks of summer fun and activity. There has been a change of venue for the week beginning 8th August. Instead of Greendown, as advertised, WASPS will be found at Toothill Farm on Bodiam Drive, Toothill. The final week, from Monday 15th August, will take place at Westea School. WASPS takes place from Monday to Thursday, 11a.m. to 3p.m. and is FREE. Children must bring their own lunch and there is a tuck shop where goodies can be bought. Although the activities are free, donations from well-wishers and supporters will be gratefully received. It will be used to develop more play activities in the future. Every day is a surprise at WASPS and children are asked to bring something for the following day. However, there is no pressure to contribute. On page 3 there is a list of items to bring. Below: Under 5$ at Upper Shaw Farm. Details of opening times on page 16.

After months of secret negotiations the proposals to build a ten screen cinema complex in the area will soon be unveiled and building work could start before the end of the year. The site, on the hill opposite the Link Centre, will also include a 10 pin bowling alley, restaurants, nightclub and a hotel.

Is West Swindon a "community?' Meeting looks for answers Forty people attended a meeting on 13th July at Link Centre's Arts Studio to discuss whether West Swindon is a "community.' Although those attending the open evening organised by Thamesdown Council's Community Development Team in West Swindon did not arrive at an answer, they put forward views which described what was good and bad about the area, and what needs to be improved.

Friendly people, good neighbours and the number of community groups were seen as positive aspects to West Swindon. So were the leisure facilities, play areas, the provision for families and closeness to the countryside. On the negative side, the Gateway superstore was heavilycriticised for high prices, low quality and lack of information about the changes being made in store. Police treatment of young people, untidy gardens, stupid house numbering, dog excreta on pavements, the lack of a launderette, and facilities in Grange Park, litter, the lack of things to do on a low income, and apathetic people who moan about nothing to do all came in for stick during the discussion. A wide range of changes and improvements were called for. Teenagers at the meeting wanted more activities for people without money, training facilities and a refuge for youngsters who leave home after disputes with parents.

Parents wanted a toddler splash pool, nursery groups and staffed adventure playgrounds. There were also calls for the cinema to be built soon, more notice boards in the area for the display of information, social activities for the 18 to 30 age bracket and better public relations with the Police. It was agreed that another discussion should take place in the Autumn to follow up the points raised at the meeting. -Only a limited number of people in West Swindon know that the Community Development team exists. Next month, The Link profiles the team and describes its work.

Toothill School's departing headteacher Anne Newton was given a big surprise when she was asked to attend an 'unplanned' last day of term, whole school assembly. Normally children have to attend seperate assemblies because the hall just is not big enough. But on this rare occasion, nearly 500 children and staff crammed into a room designed for less than 300 to sing Mrs. Newton's favourite songs and to exchange gifts. "It was a bit of squeeze to get everybody in and just proved the need for a decent sized hall," said Elaine Hill, chair of the Parents and Friends Association. "How Mrs. Newton kept her composure I don't know. She must have known something

was going on as everybody assembled, but she kept out of the way. There were many presentations including a book of photographs made by the children of life at Toothill School. "What was amusing was that Mrs. Newton presented the school with a new 'Toot,' our school mascot. But unbeknown to her was that she was to be given the original 'Toot,' which was made for the school after the children named the Toot and Whistle pub at the Village Centre." Mrs. Newton has moved on to be a lecturer at a teacher training college. Altogether, twelve members of staff left Toothill School in July, three to take up headteacher posts in other schools.

New Play Areas on show Thamesdown Council is soon to start work on two new open spaces on the edge of Toothill, Freshbrook and Grange Park at Kiln Park and next to Talus Walk/Woolaton Close. Kiln Park, named after the Roman Kilns found beneath the surface, will be enhanced by plenty of tree and shrub planting and a path which follows the nearby stream. A new pond is to be built as well. WESTLEA Getting ready for stardom Two Westlea youngsters are making a name for themselves as performers in local shows and competitions. Pupils at Westlea School, Amy and Paul Cullum (pictured right) both had parts in "Unexpected Song," a show put on by Vera Bennett's Stage Struck company at the Arts Centre at the end of June. Dressed in a variety of costumes, the cast performed a range of songs from Jolson to Mary Poppins. "It was really good fun," said Amy. "We both had a good time. "I really enjoyed it," said Paul. After five weeks of rehearsals on two nights a week, the youngsters performed for 6 nights to full houses. Proud mum Beverly Cullum supports the children all the way but is beginning to feel the strain. "They really work hard, and they enjoy it so much; its mum and dad who are exhausted. But we're getting ready for the next show." The day involved a hike around the Blagrove Copse, a questionnaire to test the Cubs observation and the use of the fitness equipment by each Cub. The hike was followed by lunch in the picnic area and some Cub Scout games. The competition was won by a team from the 1st. Wootton Bassett. Certificates were presented to each team and a trophy to the winners by Roger Hiles (Assistant District Commissioner Cub Scouts) and Dawn Scott (District Cub Scout Leader)

At long last the new Church Building is taking shape. No longer am I asked is it a church or a boat? The whole of the roof structure is complete and the brickwork is well on the way Another question is, will the building have a name? Yes, it will be called Holy Trinity Church Shaw, although we believe it will be known to most as Shaw Church. It is indeed a much needed premises as far as Shaw Church is concerned. With Family services on the 2nd Sunday of the month running in excess of 60 people, the small church near the Nine Elms, where we meet at present, is proving a little inadequate. lam often asked what the large hole in the middle of the floor is for? No! It is not for the organ to rise from at the beginning of each service. It is a baptistry in which we will be able to baptise adults by total immersion. This has been the practice for a long time in the Baptist Church and is becoming the custom more and more for the other member denominations. This is because we have more and more adults, who were not Baptised /Christened as children, committing themselves to the Lord and wishing to be Baptised. There is more to this building than a church building. Let me explain its lay-out. Nearest J.C.R., we have the worship area which will hold the two vestries with two meeting rooms above. Beyond the dais and two large sliding doors is a church/community activity hail, which can provide seating for about 280. Beyond this hall is a large room for a playgroup or meetings, another meeting room, kitchen and servcry. There are also all the necessary toilet facilities including those for the disabled and a babies changing/ feeding room.

As you will gather from this article, our New Church is not just for Christian Worship but will provide much needed extra facilities, for use by other groups in the community. If you represent any group, which is considering possible use of the Church for its activities in the New Year, please contact me well in advance on 770568, so consideration can be given to your request.

Shaw School gets a name for itself Shaw's new school at Middleleaze, to open in September, is to be named 'Salt Way' after an ancient communication route that passes next to the site. The school governors decided to put forward the name to the Education Committee after the Head, Mrs. Sue Butcher, visited the Thamesdown Archaeology Project at nearby Wick Farm. Staff at the project were able to give her several suggestions for naming the school after old fields and landmarks. In early times salt was a vitally important commodity as the only means of preserving meat and fish. Salt Ways around the country were established as the main route for distributing salt by packhorse train. The Wiltshire Salt Way is part of a major route running northsouth from the salt springs at Droitwich in Worcestershire to the south-coast. Its line can be clearly seen on maps from the Marlborough Downs to Cirencester. In West Swindon, the route runs up Hay Lane (now a footpath through Grange Park) through to Nine Elms and Shaw. No doubt the historical connections of the modern school at Middleaze will be the subject of many projects at Salt Way in future years. Saying good-bye to the Archaeology Project on page 22.

What's on in August A Colouring and Making Competition for children, Exhibitions and the latest books. West Swindon Librarian Linda Black describes just some of the attractions at the Library this month. Hopefully, by the time the next issue of the 'Link' is published, the rain might have stopped, but if it hasn't, and you are looking for things to do please pop into the library and see what is happening over the summer months. The library service locally, in conjunction with Sherrat & Hughes book shop, is organising several competitions for children. The theme is Jungle Trek.' Under 5s are invited to either submit a colour-in sheet (available from the library) or to make a model of a jungle animal. Older children can participate in the competition also by making a model of a jungle animal. It can be any size and any medium (lego, clay, papier-mache, card etc). Entries should be handed in to any of the Swindon libraries over the summer holiday period. The final judging will be done by Sherrat & Hughes at the Swindon Divisional Junior Library. There are lots of books and book tokens as prizes so it is well worth trying your hand! Look out also for fun quizzes on jungle related themes in the library; no prizes for these, but there will be certificates for all those who successfully find the correct answers. For our more mature readers, we have two excellent exhibitions. Rod Kensett is organising a superb adult education exhibition in the library commencing July 27th until August 20th. If you are unsure about what evening courses are available this autumn or what you would like to do, take this opportunity to come along for a chat about options, and also to see what last year's students achieved. On display will be glass engraving, patchwork, sculpture, jewellery making, painting, photography and if you wish to see demonstrations, then come down on a Saturday to see students and tutors at work on upholstery, art work, make-up and beauty treatments there might even be a choir! From August 24th, for three weeks, we are delighted to see the return of local artist Andy Hudson. His exhibition this time is entitled 'Old Town - A Personal View'. Andy's demonstrations last year attracted enormous attention and I'm sure

this new exhibition will be just as successful. Running out of space for the 'bookbit' but I have to mention some favorite authors with new books out. lames Michener's 'Alaska' (a panoramic novel which traces the development of Alaska from the earliest times), Bernard Cornwell, acclaimed for his ' Sharpe series', has a new thriller called 'Wild Track', Gerald Seymour has another espionage spy thriller in 'At Close

Quarters'. I must not forget Winston Graham's Cameo. In 'Cameo' all the action takes place in a single week of April 1941. It brilliantly evokes the tension of wartime London and of course is a love story to boot! If you waded through Anthony Grey's book 'Saigon' and enjoyed it, then look out for 'Peking' an equally awe inspiring blockbuster. Finally, a new biography of Wallis Simpson by Charles Higham just entitled 'Wallis -

Secret Live's of the Duchess of Windsor.' It is described as a shocking revelation of a dangerous woman who seriously threatened Britain's security during World War II. All the above books may be requested at 30p a time - cheap at the price.

Positive outlook at end of third year Head teacher Keith Burke reviews the growth of his school. Shaw Ridge School has now completed its third year and the numbers have steadily risen from 19 to its present 243. This rapid growth has meant that the first double mobile is already in place as seems to be the tradition on the western expansion. The year has been a very busy and pleasing one. This term has seen the 4th years spend five very enjoyable days at Portland, a sports evening and many other activities going on throughout the school. As well as raising money for others the children and the Friends of the school have been able to raise funds for the school itself. In September the school will once again be holding its annual 10 kilometer run and a fun run as well for 9 years and over. May we take this opportunity of thanking all those involved in the school for their continued efforts.

Community Activities at Greendown Greendown, West Swindon's secondary school is the first, and so far only, school in Wiltshire to be designated a "community school." This means that the facilities are available, when not used for school purposes, are available to community, cultural and recreation groups of

all kinds - as can be seen from the list below. For a modest annual fee of Â£5, members have access to user groups, and facilities which can be used at low cost. For example, there is a multi gym which can be used for .50p per session, or use of the computers and access to a TV and radio studios (during specfflr.'1ly programmed times). YOUTH WORK FROM GREENDOWN One part of Greendown's response to the needs of the community it serves is through the work of Carl Bowen, its Youth worker. Carl's office is in the Len Hobbs Suite and through his work in the whole of the West Swindon area young people have come to know him and, by his "open door" policy, many have dropped in for a chat and a coffee. Carl does not run a traditional Youth Club at Greendown but he does use the Len Hobbs Community Suite on occasions throughout the week and at weekends as a drop-in facility where snooker, table-tennis, chatting and planning activities like trips, weekends away etc, goon. At present his times are: Mondays 3.00pm - 6.00pm (Generally 15+) Thursdays 3.00pm - 6.00pm (Generally 15+) 7.00pm - 10.00pm (Generally under 16) Fridays Saturdays I 2.00noon- 3.00pm (Generally 15+) At other times you are likely to meet Carl around Freshbrook, at the Community Centre or at the Link. Later on there will, of course, be the Christmas dinner. Don't think we are just a lot of old fuddy-duddies, our ages range from mid-twenties to the seventies. It won't cost you a fortune either! Lost Youth, Found Love Sharron Lawson-Duckett has never experienced the freedom of teenage years to learn how to become an adult. As a seventeen year old mother of an 18 month old daughter, every day is hard work.

When I see any of my old school friends in town they say how lovely to have a baby, isn't she gorgeous. Yes, she is gorgeous, but I can't say my situation is lovely. I get woken up between 7.00a.m. and 8.00a.m.every morning when we get up and go downstairs to say goodbye to Nanny and Grandad as they go to work. Then my day starts. If it's raining and cold the day starts with apprehension as I know, till my mother finishes work at 2, I am confined to the house with a very demanding 18 month old daughter. If the weather is good, I know Kayleigh can at least play in the garden while I tidy the house for my parents. I get her breakfast and read the paper while she's eating it (the breakfast, not the paper). Then I go up and tidy my room before starting to clear up. While I am doing one room Kayleigh is often making a mess in the other room 'helping' me. If it's bright I sometimes take her over to the park for an hour with the dog. By now it's nearly lunchtime when I prepare her a snack after which she has a sleep for about an hour. This is when I try to clear the mess she has made. Then my mother comes home from work and we have a cup of tea. We often go shopping, sometimes in town but mainly just to Gateway. Before long it's 5p.m. when we go to collect my father from work. We come home, have tea and more often than not just sit and watch television till bedtime. Sometimes I get lucky and we take the dog down Lydiard for a couple of hours. This is nice because the whole family goes so I get plenty of help with amusing Kayleigh. Sometimes I'm really lucky and get to go out on my own with my sister. But of course I have to rely on my mum to do the babysitting. At the end of the day, when Kayleigh finally goes to sleep around nine o'clock, I am quite exhausted. Running around after her all day is tiring, but also very boring at times. I have tried jobs but I missed the baby, and just find it too much working all day and up with her at night. My dream once was to work with horses and was offered a live in position at a stable which meant leaving Kayleigh. In the

Cornish photographer Mike Toy spent six months in the country working on small-scale school 'rehabilitation' projects in the Western province of Darfur, an area devastated by the famine of recent years. The pictures focus on everyday life as he saw it, and form a startling contrast to the photographs associated with media coverage of the situation three years ago. The camera can, it appears, tell a lie - (or, 'There is, it appears, a lot more to the Sudan than meets the eyes of the media'). The pictures take you from the capital city of Khartoum across the and wastes of the Kordofan desert, up into the lush green of the Jebel Marra volcano and out to Geniena, the Sudan's most western town, forty minutes from the Chadian border.

Cabaret To launch the new Thamesdown Community Arts season the Link Arts Studios will be hosting an evening of comedy and music on Saturday September 3rd. HOME & GARDEN Eyesoreby Claire or Beaton Gracenote Wzrl Garden Centre visiting can remain a compulsive habit even after your own garden is crammed full of plants. Each row of specimens is young and enticing, inspiring a vision of their attractions in view from your living room window. Weeping trees are often bought compulsively, yet few plants so attractive as juveniles can grow into such eyesores as adults. In our smaller plots in West Swindon the most important lesson is to balance weeping specimens against their surroundings; in our case, mostly brick walls and beds filled with tidy shrubs and clumps of perennials. The young Weeping Willow (Salix xchrysocoma) is easily out of scale once it has grown out of its nursery pot. Perhaps a yet more urgent consideration is the damage their thirsty roots can do to house foundations and drains. Smaller and more suitable willows are the Kilmarnock Willow (Salix caprea) and the weeping purple-twigged willow (Salix purpurea Pendula'). The first is the smaller tree, with long, rigid twigs falling from a narrow crown. I have seen several specimens of this planted locally and the only difficulty to guard against is its habit of growing a lopsided 'wig' caused by the prevailing westerly winds. One solution is to tie back the wandering young twigs before they get set by the wind. The purple-twigged willow is less formal in its growth than the Kilmarnock Willow and will grow to about 10 feet. It would form a pleasant contrast to a conifer hedge with a relaxed head of graceful branchlets growing blue-green slender leaves. Of a similar size, but with peppermint-green leaves, and white flowers in spring, is the willow-leaved pear (Pyrus salicifolia 'Pendula'). When the wind blows the leaves shimmer as their silver undersides twist into view. This can be almost too strong a contrast against a green garden backdrop, but very attractive in smaller gardens dominated by a patio. There are various weeping cherries for the centre of the traditional front garden and, carefully pruned, their spring beauty is delightful. Another possible choice is a new weeping, flowering tree introduced by a local nursery (Highfield's) from near Gloucester and shown at this year's Chelsea Flower Show. This is a flowering crab, Malus

'Sun Rival', whose gently weeping branches are covered with deep pink buds opening to white blossom in spring and glowing red fruit in the autumn. Its ultimate height is estimated to be 18 feet which makes it ideal for the smaller garden.

The Link helps out A letter from Martha Parry Within the past year, The Link Magazine has solved two major problems for me and I thought I would like to thank you for trying so hard. Last spring, I found myself without anyone to look after my 3 year old daughter while I took up a job locally. An advertisement in The Link brought the ideal person to my door. Jenny Woolley turned out to be exactly the mother's help I would have wished for caring towards my daughter and understanding of my unpredictable work schedule. The other problem was resolved even faster this year. Having bought an older house in Swindon, we were taken by surprise at how much work it really needed. With two lots of bills mounting up and desperate to get into the 'new' house, I was standing 'stewing' at the cooker one evening, when The Link fell through the letterbox. Right, I said, I'm going to enjoy myself with the local gossip. I read the lot right through to the end, where I read about Peter Barnett, a local plumber. Fate beckons, I thought, and reached for the 'phone. Within a week Peter had started to install central heating and a houseful of plumbing. Two weeks later, he was finished and we moved in! When he arrived, later, with a most reasonable bill, he brought along a bottle of wine, with which I now toast The Link. Thanks for a lot!

For the last 2.5 years archaeology in Thamesdown has been the responsibility of a Community Programme scheme. Due to a change of emphasis by the Government the Unit, together with all other Community Programme schemes, will come to an end on September 2nd 1988. Perhaps now is a good time to briefly reflect on what, archaeologically we have achieved. We have had two excavations in Old Town, two in Cricklade and one each in Highworth, Ramsbury, Blunsdon, Purton, Malmesbury, Shaw Ridge, Market Lavington and here at Wick Farm. We have watched Swindon's Western expansion and noted continued presence of Romano-British kiln sites out to Nine Elms. The entire areas of the Northern and Southern Development Areas have been walked, and drawing surveys completed on all earthwork sites within these confines. All of our work be it excavation or survey has been in advance of development, real "rescue archaeology", and one wonders what will happen to threatened sites when the Unit closes. One possibility is a return to "Community Archaeology", supervised by a professional carrying out all the work done previously by the Unit. Such a scheme could work, given the interest and time of people like you!
