Charity nights going strong at Swindon restaurants

Started in 2008, popular Indian restaurant Bengal Square in Peatmoor has consistently run charitable fundraising nights donating all profits to worthy causes across the Swindon area. Now, the restaurant is expanding this charitable evening to their newly reopened sister site Mantra in Old Town.

Held every Monday and Tuesday at Bengal Square, and every Tuesday at Mantra, the charity nights have raised over £100,000 to date which has been shared amongst local causes from youth football teams to Macmillan cancer research. We’ve got to clean up our act By Group Editor Jamie Hill We had a message sent to us this month in reaction to our Positive Swindon feature in our March edition. The email from Glenda Prothero reads: “Reading the editor’s header in the Link he talks of what makes Swindon great. How can we spread this idea when it is becoming a dump? There is litter everywhere with areas looking like dumps. The public are to blame of course but it us being left to clean up. Visitors must be appalled and won’t want to come again. Pride - not at present. Sad.” I’ve got to say that I completely agree with Glenda. There’s nothing that annoys me more than seeing people chuck stuff away willy nilly and although there is a lot to be proud of in the town if people continue to treat it with such contempt it’s hard for us to have real pride. It only takes a few seconds to put your litter in a bin and we’re all responsible for this. Another worrying aspect of this is

that one of the responsibilities that will be taken over by the new and existing parish councils is street cleaning as the borough tries to offset yet more costs to afford the increasing social care burden. Let us all hope that the parish councils are up to this difficult challenge. We know that some like Haydon Wick have the experience already to take on these responsibilities and hopefully the newly formed parishes will follow suit and make this a priority. We are all responsible though and it is us that need to ensure we keep our town tidy. There are already lots of community groups who go out of their way to clean up neighbourhoods and they should be praised but let’s have some pride and tidy up after ourselves. editor@swindonlink.com

The Spirit of Swindon: Levelling the playing field By Sue Pycroft on behalf of Spirit of Swindon One of the key factors in reducing inequality in a society is access to education. The Equality Trust, a charity that works to improve the quality of life by reducing economic inequality, states: “Everybody agrees that education is important and that education benefits societies as well as individuals. People with more education earn more, pay more taxes, are more productive, and happier. Well educated people contribute more to society; they’re also more likely to volunteer and to vote.” So how is Swindon doing in terms of educating its young people, to help them achieve their goals and enable them to give back to the community they live in? In many ways, Swindon is doing well, despite the recent public criticism. Overall, the numbers of young people participating in education, employment and training is high, with the number of 18 to 24 year olds seeking work lower than the national average. The town’s strong, diverse economy offers young people employment opportunities in a range of industries including advanced engineering, financial services, science and technology, and digital. Overall, we have 78 per cent of

residents in employment, against 74 per cent nationally. But we haven’t got it right yet. In 2015/16, 54 per cent of our 16 year olds who attended Swindon schools gained five A*-C GCSEs with English and Maths, compared to a national average of 57 per cent. Clearly, that needs to improve. This difference persists in our adult residents. Nationally, 74 per cent of 16-64 year olds have GCSE level qualifications, but in Swindon we lag behind at 69 per cent. And while 37 per cent of UK residents have university level qualifications, only 29 per cent of Swindon residents have achieved that level. We can, and must, do better. The good news is that practical steps are being taken to raise the bar, and we can all play a part in that. It is recognised that one of the significant issues relating to education is lack of aspiration – among some students, parents, and employers. A new initiative, called Swindon Challenge, is being applied to every child in every school. Swindon Challenge is a partnership with schools, local businesses, further education colleges and Oxford Brookes University. It will build on the town's existing strengths to improve education and employment outcomes for everyone. This collaborative

approach is supporting all young people and their families to explore the lifelong benefits that higher qualifications can bring. Routes to higher level skills and degrees have never been easier whether young people choose go to University or achieve a degree apprenticeship whilst in work. Swindon Challenge is enabling a national education expert, Marc Rowland, to work in partnership with Swindon secondary schools. The schools will collaborate to identify and implement what works well to raise aspirations including support for vulnerable pupils. Swindon Challenge is aspirational for all young people no matter what their starting point. So what can we all do to support this? Employers and parents can get in touch with Swindon Challenge to find out more about how you

Community News Potential bid by Swindon Town Football Club Supporters’ Trust to buy County Ground Swindon Town Football Club Supporters’ Trust are considering making a £1.1 million bid for the County Ground. Supporters discussed the move at the trust’s annual general meeting in March and the plan is to buy the town’s stadium from owners Swindon Borough Council. The £1.1 million price has been part of discussions for the past two years between the Trust and the council with a formal offer put forward last June – with a view to complete the transaction before March 2018. The relatively low price for the stadium takes into consideration the Trust’s community status, the need for extensive work to get the stadium up to scratch and the covenant put in place by the Goddard family that stipulates that the land be used for recreation purposes. As part of this the council would put in place a buyback clause to prevent the County Ground being sold on to a third party by the Trust in the future. It is understood that the current Swindon Town Football Club chairman Lee Power and the club itself is not part of this proposal at the moment although it has been

put to them. The Trust, led by chairman Steve Mytton, wants to bridge the divide between the club and its supporters. In recent years a bid to put a roof on the Stratton Bank failed after the Trust were unable to raise the £500,000 needed for the job – as investors were reluctant to invest money into an asset not owned by the club. The plan is not without risk for The Trust as the proposal would need to be approved by full council and the team could relocate to another venue at any time leaving the County Ground altogether. Plans are also being discussed to develop the surrounding area to include ideas for a club museum, sport-themed hotel and gym, and a ‘Legends Way’ among other community and fan friendly facilities. Discussions are now taking place on how to fund the project, taking into account urgent repairs and maintenance, further contingencies, and investment in further developments. This could include crowdfunding, external funding bodies and community shares in the County Ground. The document released for the AGM said: “There is much more at

stake than simply what happens on the pitch this season, or next. There is a unique and exciting possibility for fans to own their own stadium, and from there we can set ourselves up for real progress. “It would be a huge step forward and a great selling point to outsiders. But we can do more. We need to work on the relationship with Lee Power and try to improve it, as much as some may not like it, he is in the driving seat when it comes to ownership of the Club. “At some point, we’re sure he

will be interested in selling up and we want to be first in the queue, with the ultimate dream – a 51% fan owned Football Club. Okay, we know that’s some way off. It would be a chance for Mr Power to leave a great legacy though, passing the club over to the fans. “Our dream is based on the German model, where there is the “50 + 1” rule. It means that clubs must be majority-owned by their members (thus a minimum of 51%), thereby preventing a single owner taking control of the whole club.”

Community library bids go under the spotlight News in brief Bids by community groups to take on the running of local libraries in Swindon are being considered ahead of a cabinet meeting at the end of the month. A total of 12 expressions have been received by Swindon Borough Council to support local libraries, after the local authority decided to cut funding to all but five core libraries in the borough - Central, North Swindon, West Swindon, Highworth and Park. The department for culture, media and sport will be consulted ahead of the cabinet meeting on April 26 and it will meet key stakeholders including local councillors, library users and staff to map out recommendations for the way ahead. Local groups or individuals had until 31 January to submit expressions of interest in the non-core libraries and the council’s officers are now supporting 12 groups to develop their plans and business cases. The council has been working with Mutual Ventures, an independent organisation which specialises in developing charitable and public

service mutual enterprises, to look at various delivery models for the town’s library service. Suggested approaches include non-staffed libraries - where users are responsible for checking out and returning books and making use of volunteers from local schools to support local library provision. Other delivery models include keeping the library service in-house so it continues to be run by the council, setting up a Local Authority Trading Company owned by the council with services delivered via a contract, or creating a Public

Service Mutual. A PSM would be a new organisation that shares ownership of the service between the council, communities and staff. The final model which will be assessed includes establishing a joint venture with an existing library service provider. The options appraisal would also look at whether the delivery model would take the form of a Limited Company, Community Interest Company, Co-operative or Community Benefit Society and whether it should be a social enterprise or charity. Cllr Mary Martin, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities, said: “I am delighted there is such strong interest from a number of groups. We will be working with the groups who have come forward to talk through their plans and ensure their proposals are robust enough to provide a sustainable service. At the same time, we will be working hard to find the best model for delivering our core service through the options appraisal so those five libraries have an equally sustainable future.”

One month to go until new parish elections Swindon heads to the polls on 4 May as the first of the new parish council elections take place. Information about what is required to become a parish councillor is available on the ‘How to become a councillor’ webpage. All nominations must be received by 4pm on Tuesday 4 April. In each of the new parishes, a shadow parish council has been formed to decide on services that will be transferred from the council. This is made up largely of Swindon Borough Council ward councillors from each area. The decision to parish previously unparished areas of the Borough followed a year-long Community Governance Review process which involved extensive engagement and formal consultation with residents and parish councils. However, the new parish system has not been introduced without objection. A very vocal element in the public gallery during the council meeting that saw the plans voted through to set up the new parishes, as well as calls from the Labour group calling the whole process a “debacle” have been key flash points in the implementation

of this new layer of governance. The Blunsdon St Andrew Parish is to be split under the new system, and parish chairman Ian Jankinson has told Swindon Link of his dismay over the changes. Ian said: “This month Blunsdon St Andrew Parish Council will be forced to give up its role of supporting the community of St Andrew. After an 18 month struggle against an unnecessary Governance Review, St Andrew will split from Blunsdon after 125 years of cohesive community development. Despite our resistance to some personal acrimony and misinformation we have worked closely with the recently appointed shadow Parish to help enable a smooth transition for the community. “Our residents will by now be aware of the parish precepts for both new parishes of £55 for St Andrew and £89 for Blunsdon (for equivalent Band D properties). “The irony is that had we remained as one parish our precept would have been less than either of these. The Parish of Blunsdon St Andrew had budgeted for a precept of £47 for both areas and the extra

costs associated with the split and the new parish have driven up the precept beyond this. “In the ensuing parish council elections in May, those 7 or 8 parish councillors who live in Redhouse and St Andrew’s Ridge and have worked hard to support both Blunsdon and St Andrew over the years, will now stand for election in the new Parish of St Andrew. They feel that they still have work to do in supporting the community in which they live and have had years experience of working with residents to resolve local issues.” The statutory minimum number of parish councillors for each area is five - there is no maximum number. The number of parish councillors in existing parishes in Swindon range from 5 to 23. Anyone wishing to vote but unable to get to a polling station on 4 May can request a postal vote. New home for band The Cricklade Band is celebrating after moving into new premises, with a ‘house warming’ concert on Sunday April 2 at the Town Hall. Since the start of the year, the band, formerly based at the Cricklade United Church Hall, have been looking for new premises. And thanks to the support of the Town Hall Committee, the 130 year old band have now secured a place at the Town Hall. The Band Academy rehearsal base will continue to be at Cricklade United Church Hall, Tickets for the event, which is taking place at 7.30pm, are available from the Cricklade Council Office in the High Street.

Festival date set Preparations are being made for a community festival to be held at Emmanuel United Reformed Church in Haydon Wick. Place your trust in us: heritage group takes on Lydiard House A new chapter has begun in the history of the Lydiard Park estate - following Swindon Borough Council’s decision to hand over its running to the Lydiard Park Heritage Trust. The decision, which was officially confirmed at the council’s cabinet meeting on March 15, sets in motion a handover timetable which will see the trust ratify employment arrangements with staff working in the park and house and conduct a comprehensive property survey by the start of April. Chairman of the trust, Mike Bowden said: “We are delighted to have been chosen as the council’s preferred bidder. There was a tidal wave of people who did not want it to fall into private hands and become a commercial project. And the heritage component of our bid reflected local people’s desire to see this asset preserved. He added: “I can assure both the council and the local people that the hard work of all our trustees will continue, complacency will not be an issue. We have never seen the process in party political terms and we have to thank members of all parties for their support and contributions. The preservation of Swindon’s rich heritage is so important and I hope we have persuaded many that a well organised charitable trust may be a useful template for other heritage challenges in the town.”

Fellow trust member Sarah FinchCrisp explained that a great benefit of the trust model is that it will allow a total focus on Lydiard Park and Gardens whereas at present it is forced to compete with other council priorities. “It means that we will now be allowed to ring fence the money that we generate from parking for the use of the estate.” She added: “We are aware that the vast majority would like to see Lydard retain the qualities that

make it such a fantastic asset. We plan to sensitively build on and enhance those qualities rather than making any great changes. We’re taking a steady as she goes approach.” She explained that the trust will be working to build on commercial opportunities at the park and house, including conference facilities and hosting wedding celebrations, Trustee Kevin Fisher added that the trust will continue to guard against planning applications that

threaten to undermine the beauty of the estate: “Lydiard continues to face external threats and we anticipate further applications for planning consent that would have a detrimental impact on the house, park and St Mary’s Church. Tree cheers for ancient park An ancient and historically important walnut tree at Lydiard Park, destroyed by high winds three years ago, will live on thanks to the efforts of keen gardener Mike Critchley. The former Ray Chem plant engineer explained that he had collected a walnut from the 300-year-old tree when he was walking through the park with his young son a number of years ago. He planted the walnut seeds in pots and they grew so vigorously that he was then able to transfer them to his back garden where they developed into saplings. Estate and properties manager Stuart Webb explained: “The original walnut tree was thought to have been the fifth largest in the country. It was also important because it would have been planted as part of the overall scheme for the garden when it was created.”

He explained that the Lydiard team wanted to replace the tree but had to carefully consider the context of how it would be placed in the landscape. The team looked at ways to continue the Walnut line through propagation but sadly, although there had been some regrowth, the long term prospects for its survival were not looking good. However Mike Critchley got in touch, having heard about the dilemma and offered a replacement tree. Stuart Webb, Estate and Parkland manager said “We are indebted to Mike, and his son of course, for their generosity and horticultural prowess. We hope that in the year 2217, we will be interviewing their descendants to reflect on this amazing story and on the family's lasting connection with Lydiard Park.”

Major phase of work begins at Junction 16 Around 100,000 tonnes of clay will be transported onto Junction 16 of the M4 over the coming months as part of the latest phase of works to transform the key highway interchange. Lorries will be operating between 8am and 5.30pm between Brinkworth and the motorway junction on a regular basis throughout the day. This is expected to continue until July. Approximately 2,000 tonnes of material will be transported each day, and it’s anticipated this phase of the work will have a minimal impact on traffic, but the situation will be monitored. No lane closures will be allowed during peak hours. The £11.5m upgrade of Junction 16 will ensure it can cope with forecast future traffic levels and

The Trust’s first action will be to open a new, purpose-built £85,000 community facility at the Stadium. High flying 20-year-old has eyes set on instructor role

One of the youngest qualified flight instructors in the country, 20-yearold Yakupcan Tuna, is preparing to leave his home in Swindon to teach the next generation of pilots - in Inverness. Yak, as he prefers to be known, developed the flying bug at the age of 13 as a member of the Air Cadets. And unlike most youngsters, who struggle to decide what they want to do with their lives, he very quickly realised that aviation was the path he wanted to follow and devoted every minute of spare time towards achieving that dream. “I was never very academic at school - but to me that didn’t matter because I knew what I wanted to do. I just really love flying,” he said. “None of my family are pilots, but they recognised that it was something that I was really passionate about and helped support me.” Yak worked hard to earn the extra money to help pay for his flying lessons at Kemble Airfield - and his first job was as a delivery agent for the Swindon Link magazine at the age of 13. As he got older, he worked at Honda to support his

The Mechanics’ Institution Trust has announced what it sees as the most logical course of action for the historic Railway Village area of Swindon at a meeting during March. With a packed crowd gathered at the Central Community Centre, Chairman Daniel Rose explained the Trust’s ideas for the public assets in the area, and shared some key details from a major viability study on the Mechanics’ Institute itself. The vision laid out during the meeting would involve the Mechanics Institute, Central Community Centre, Health Hydro, Carriage Works, The Platform and the disused Cricketers pub coming under the management of the Trust, and utilised so that they mutually benefit one another in a revitalised cultural quarter. The Mechanics’ Institute itself would become a central hub with a new restaurant, revamped 200 seater auditorium in the Reading Room, a 350-400 capacity venue space on the first floor, as well as several spaces for community groups, office and conference space and a ‘hot-desking’ area for small start up companies to utilise. To achieve this, almost £12m will

Bursts of celebration as Swindon celebrates Hindu Holi Festival of Colour

Holi – the Hindu Festival of Colours created a riot of colour and celebration at the Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre in Swindon on Sunday (12 March). The first festival of its type to be held in the town, the event was a huge success, and despite slightly damp conditions, the colours and fun became the order of the day. Toothill Church donate £400 to Asthma Relief Charity Members of Toothill Church and the Tinies Playgroup have donated £400 to the Swindon Asthma Relief charity. Christmas collection money was donated to the cause after the charity provided a nebuliser to a child who attends the playgroup. Carly Reed explained: “My daughter Emme, suffers from cyctic fibrosis and finds it difficult to breathe. “We were lucky enough to receive this donation of a nebuliser that she can use at home. It’s all change as Isambard school reveals new name and logo Isambard Community School is set to be renamed Abbey Park School, as of September, as part of a major rebranding exercise that will also see the introduction of a smart new uniform and school logo. Executive Principal Clive Zimmerman, who also runs Lydiard Park Academy, explained: “I think we felt that there was a mixed perception of Isambard in the community and it needed to be refreshed. We felt it was important to introduce a new vision and set of values. “We have introduced a new tie and blazer and this along with the name change and the new logo signal that things at Isambard have changed. We hope that this will make the children who attend the new Abbey Park School feel proud of their school.” He explained that the new name and logo reflected the school’s proximity to Blunsdon Abbey, a former Victorian country house situated just off Tadpole Lane - with the folly tower forming part of the new school crest. And the revamp at the school, which saw a change of leadership at the end of October last year, extends beyond the cosmetic. Since a highly critical Ofsted report, the school has been brought under the leadership of Mr Zimmerman as part of a multiacademy trust.

A new operational headteacher, Jon Young, has been appointed and staff have been working hard to bring about a cultural shift and raise expectations at the North Swindon secondary school. Mr Zimmerman said: “The newly named Abbey Park School and Lydiard Park Academy will be working hand in hand from September, sharing best practice.” Other changes that have been introduced, to address concerns raised by Ofsted, have included a renewed focus on the consistency and expectations of teaching throughout the school and a new rewards and

consequences system. There will also be changes to the school day that will see the introduction of a short break between each of the lessons and a shorter lunch break aimed at helping students give maximum concentration on learning. The Lydiard Park Academy’s 6th form, now in its third year, will be renamed The Park Academies Trust and give equal access to students from both schools wanting to study A-levels and general vocational courses. Mr Young, in a letter to parents to introduce the changes said: “The opening of Abbey Park School

represents a fantastic opportunity for everyone in the North Swindon community. “We open in a modern, well equipped building with outstanding facilities that will allow our staff to use up to date approaches to really bring education to life. “That’s not to say that we shun traditional approaches - far from it. When it comes to standards of personal conduct, maintaining respectful relationships and developing a strong work ethic, our expectations are very traditional. “This is reflected in our choice of uniform for Abbey Park School, as we believe that dressing smartly is part of developing a positive mindset that will help our pupils become confident, successful young people.”

The busy sewing bees of Poppydown Quilters are helping parents exchange body scent with their new born in the special care baby unit at Great Western Hospital. Because premature and unwell babies are quickly transferred to life-giving incubators after birth, the opportunity to spend the all important bonding hours is lost. Now the keen sewers at Poppydown, who meet at Shaw Ridge Primary School, have sent more than 90 pairs of heart shaped pieces of fabric to the intensive care ward so that they can be given to parents. One of the bonding hearts is

placed on or next to the baby in the incubator whilst the parents keep the other close to their skin. Swapping the hearts regularly can help to get mums, dads and babies used to each other’s scent during the difficult days and weeks when they are unable to hold or cuddle each other. The smell can also help to produce the hormones needed to aid breastfeeding. Group member Sue Buford said: “The bonding hearts are a lovely idea to help parents build a close connection with their babies when things are confusing and difficult; they give hope.”

Peatmoor student raising funds to help Ecuadorian villagers

First year university student Charlotte Butler from Peatmoor is raising funds to travel to Ecuador and assist villagers as part of a volunteer programme. Currently studying Internatonal Tourism Management at the University of Surrey, Charlotte will be hosting a fundraising curry night at Bengal Square in Peatmoor on 24 April that will go towards the £1200 cost of the trip to South America. Charlotte said: “I love to travel and have been lucky enough to visit places such as India, China, Borneo and Namibia, which has driven my passion to study this subject at degree level.

As the name suggests they look and feel like a hedgehog, but are in fact a completely different species. Tenrec are nocturnal, so the residents at the Farm Park at Studley Grange live in a special nocturnal room specially designed for them, where the small animal encounters activities will take place at 2.30pm during weekends and school holidays only. During late March and April, the Farm Park will also be busy

with the expected arrival of more new baby animals. Furthermore, weather depending, the Farm park trailer ride will be back by popular demand providing rides for visitors, with the staff from the Studley Grange animal team on hand to provide insight into the animal husbandry techniques for the different species and breeds. As an additional activity during the Easter holidays, the resident blacksmith at Studley Grange will be offering daily drop-in sessions, for children to try blacksmithing skills. The free event is now firmly established on Wiltshire’s cultural calendar. It is loved locally and held in high regard nationally. Running from 1 - 13 May, the two-week event will feature numerous other talks, discussions, readings, and storytelling at main theatres, arts venues, libraries, parks, museums and galleries. The 40-page colour programme for the event will be launched at Swindon’s Central Library at noon on March 16.

Breast cancer walkers celebrate Moonwalk anniversary From The Archives with Link founding publisher Roger Ogle London’s Moonwalk marathon on Saturday 13 May will be the twentieth year of the world famous event, and former West Swindon resident Eunice Salmon has taken part in every one of them. From the start Link magazine was a spur for Eunice, who now lives in Purton, to bring together a team of volunteers to organise women and a sprinkling of blokes to take part in the marathon through the streets of the capital. The idea for an overnight walk came to Moonwalk founder Nina Barough who had a dream to walk the 1996 New York marathon with a group of women in their bras in aid of breast cancer. The £25,000 raised inspired Nina to organise a similar outing on the night before the 1997 London marathon. “I was 37 and had been thinking of doing a marathon and saw an article about a walking marathon supporting breast cancer,” said Eunice. “I had benign lumps when I was eighteen but had recently been to a school reunion and was told a classmate had died from breast cancer, it was a jolt and gave me a reason to take part.

Chicken Tikka Masala This month’s recipe is claimed to have originated in a Glasgow curry house, after a mix-up with Tomato Soup, but these days Chicken Tikka Masala is widely accepted as one of Britain’s iconic curry dishes. The team at MANTRA in Old Town have shared with us their secrets to creating this classic meal.

Ingredients 6 garlic cloves, finely grated 4 teaspoons finely grated peeled ginger 4 teaspoons ground turmeric 2 teaspoons garam masala 2 teaspoons ground coriander 2 teaspoons ground cumin 1 1/2 cups whole-milk yogurt (Not Greek) 1 tablespoon Kosher salt 2lb skinless, boneless chicken breasts, halved lengthwise

3 tablespoons ghee or veg oil 1 small onion, thinly sliced 1/4 cup tomato paste 6 cardamom pods, crushed 2 dried chiles de årbol or 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes 1 28oz can whole peeled tomatoes 2 cups heavy cream 3/4 cup chipped fresh cilantro plus sprigs for garnish Steamed basmati rice

Method l Combine garlic, ginger, turmeric, garam masala, coriander and cumin in small bowl. l Whisk yogurt, salt and half of spice mixture into medium bowl; add chicken and coat. Cover and chill 4-6 hours, chill remaining spice mixture. l Heat ghee in large pot over medium heat. Add onion, tomato paste, cardamom and chiles and cook, stirring often for five minutes, or until paste has darkened and onion is softened.

I was in the House of Commons recently for the launch of the Ovarian Cancer Awareness programme. So how does a male poet get involved with that, you might ask? Well, I have five sisters, four daughters, one wife and many female friends who are precious to me. Ovarian cancer is a silent killer,

mostly because it is misdiagnosed. Since 1970 the death rate has gone down by 2% while most other cancers have decreased by at least 40%. In fact today, this day, 58 women will be diagnosed with one of the five gynaecological cancers and 21 will die from it. This is unacceptable. One charity is at the forefront of research and awareness www.eveappeal.org.uk. You should read their leaflets. The Eve Appeal asked me to compose a poem for them last year. I have read it at many events.

l Add remaining spice mix and cook for 4 minutes. Add tomatoes with juices, stirring often. Add cream and cilantro, stir and simmer until thickens. l Preheat broiler, line rimmed baking sheet with foil. Arrange chicken on rack in single layer, broil until blackened in spots (chicken will not be cooked through). l Cut chicken into bite-size pieces, add to sauce and simmer, stirring occasionally. Serve with rice and cilantro sprigs.

Poetry really works where there is context and an audience that is aware. Here are the last few lines from the poem “The Second Bite” which looks positively at scientists in white coats who are trying to confront Eve’s first bite of the apple: . . . and I came to understand that water can be commanded as Moses did with the Red Sea, able to order a path of escape to the promised land, as I came to believe that incurable is only a small word,

that needles which hide in haystacks can be found by seekers in coats of white or, as Eve found bitter in that fallen apple, maybe we will taste sweetness in the second bite. St George celebrations plan Easter attractions: there’s so mu

On Sunday 23 April, the town centre will host the annual St George’s Day Festival. . The event, being organised by inSwindon BID Company, will be launched at Wharf Green from 11am. Visitors will be welcomed by the festival host, the ‘Mischievous Court Jester’ who will entertain the crowds with his traditional children’s games and balloon modelling. Local musicians and singers will perform on the main stage throughout the day. Visitors will also get to meet St. George and his famous dragon, help rescue a damsel in distress and be greeted with amazing juggling medieval knights on stilts. A free arts and crafts event will be held at Central Library from 11am – 12:15pm, where children can make their own knight shields for the Parade. St. George will also lead a Parade through the town centre from 12:30pm, meeting outside at the Cenotaph.

The procession will continue down to Regent Street, Canal Walk and finish at Wharf Green. inSwindon BID are inviting schools, community groups, families and those who simply love to have some fun! Lambing time at Roves Farm Spring is a wonderful time of year to get out into the countryside and visit a working farm. Lambing time will be in full swing by the end of March and into April at Roves Farm. The farm is expecting more than 400 lambs to be born in the barn, and with a special viewing platform looking down across the lambing shed there will be plenty of opportunities for visitors to see all the new born lambs. The ewes were tupped by the rams last Autumn, whilst grazing on a neighbouring farm near Highworth. The gestation period for sheep is 147 days. The ewes were scanned in January to establish the number of lambs each ewe was carrying and were marked accordingly with a spray – red dot for a single lamb, blue dot for triplets and no dot for twins. This information is important to the farmer to know how much food each ewe should be receiving in the lead up to lambing time. A triplet will obviously need much more nutrition than a ewe carrying just a single. The ewes will continue to graze in the fields until a few days before lambing starts on 22 March. Twins and triplets may be supplemented with extra food during February and March. The

lambing shed will be split into three areas; the main lambing area, a number of individual small pens for new born lambs and their mother, and a family pen (where all the lambs and ewes are moved to when they are a day or two old). Each ewe is given a number, sprayed onto her wool after lambing, and each of her lambs are given the same corresponding number. This enables the farmer to identify which lambs belong to which ewe in case one gets lost There’s plenty more going on at the farm this month. ‘Nature Detective’ tractor rides explore the farm during term time in March and April, and the ever popular Easter Bunny is back to his old tricks again during the Easter holidays (8th – 23rd April). Regular daily activities include meet and feed the animals in Pets Corner, meet piglets of all shapes and sizes in the Animal Barn and visit the heated play barn. For those of you who need a regular fix of art, Oink Gallery aims to inject all the necessary ingredients to bring you an array of work from all over the country, both from local artists and further afield. Oink Gallery, which has a collection of art from over 25 artists, has dedicated one of its largest walls to monthly solo exhibitions, alongside the array of designer artefacts also for sale in the shop. March saw the first of these solo exhibitions showcasing London Artist Dan Hillier’s latest collection of work, some of which can still be viewed (and bought) in the gallery. The preview night of the exhibition featured a live Facebook feed from the artist in the Gallery’s

Diary Room, allowing guests in the gallery (as well as wider online audience) to chat to the artist. A treasure trove of heritage for Swindon By Graham Carter of Swindon Heritage magazine Swindon Heritage has been awarded a £9,700 grant by the Heritage Lottery Fund to throw the spotlight on a newly discovered local treasure. Known as The Dixon-Attwell Collection, it was donated to the Local Studies department of Swindon Central Library last year, and is made up of around 7,000 documents, photos and ephemera. The collection was donated by Mike Attwell and relates to three generations of the Swindon-based Dixon and Attwell families, and in particular Mike’s grandfather, Jack Dixon (1899-1984), who lived in George Street, near the GWR Park in Faringdon Road. What members of the family all had in common was: they never seemed to throw anything away. So the collection paints a picture of everyday life in Swindon for most of the 20th century. “When my parents died, I was left with a house full of papers and others items,” said Mike Attwell. “Few items were of any real monetary value, but I recognised they had priceless interest for

Dramatic developments in the arts Swindon’s theatre scene has received a much needed shot in the arm with the launch of two new venues in the town, dedicated to promoting and supporting the arts at a grass roots level. Swindon’s Shoebox Theatre celebrated its official launch with a visit by newly appointed patron Billie Piper and a live theatrical performance. Invited guests included prominent members of Swindon’s artistic community, including Museum and Art Gallery Director Hadrian Ellory Van Dekker as well as other invitees from the wider town community including Swindon Borough Council leader David Renard. The Shoebox Theatre, based in a 6m x 12m multi-performance space next to the Wyvern Theatre, was set up last August with the aim of providing a platform for Swindon’s non professional actors to tackle new works and contemporary scripts. Speaking at the opening, Swindon-born actress Billie Piper praised the work of performers

who staged excerpts of The Magnificent Doctor Faustus and underlined the importance of grassroots theatre opportunities. “The Shoebox is small, humble and wonderful. I’m a huge fan and I’m honoured to have been asked to be a patron of the Shoebox Theatre and I’m looking forward to being a regular fixture here.” Also in March, the Bohemian Balcony has blossomed into being. The project which is based in the former Palladium Cinema on Jennings Street in Rodbourne has been launched by former teacher Dan Rivers as a multi-faceted creative hub for writers, poets, performers and theatre groups to develop their skills in a supportive environment. A budding ballet star has secured a place at the world famous Royal Ballet School - one of just 12 chosen from thousands of other hopefuls. Even Swindon Primary School pupil, Olivia Bayram, 11, heard the amazing news from her mum Caroline, who couldn’t wait until the end of the school day to tell her. She said: “I was so excited that I went to her school to give her the good news. She was in the middle of playing for the school football team at the time but the school kindly let me tell her.” Olivia said: “I couldn’t believe it, I was so excited. It’s like a dream come true. I like all kinds of dance but ballet is what I’m really focussed on.” The talented dancer has been

studying ballet with the Tanwood School for Performing Arts since the age of three. She will now stay at the ballet school’s White Lodge in Richmond Park, where she will hone her ballet skills alongside her academic studies, returning to see her parents Caroline and James every three weeks. “It’s going to be strange but I know what a big opportunity this is for me so I’m really happy. If you’ve got kids you may be worried, like a lot of people are, that the roads are too busy to let them scoot or cycle to school. The paradox is that if that thought leads you to drive them to school, you’re making the problem worse and reinforcing the view that the roads are too busy by adding another car in to the mix. Of course, no-one wants to be the first to take that step and hope that everyone else follows their great example. However, every journey starts with a single step (or pedal turn if you’re a cyclist.) Towards the end of March, there is no need for you for to be that pioneer. There is no need for you to be the lone voice shouting over the drone of queuing cars taking kids the half a mile to the school gates and clogging up the roads around the school making it difficult for people to cross the road. Sustrans are organising the return of The Big Pedal - bigpedal.org.uk It’s a schools’ competition and schools or even classes can earn points for the number of kids, parents and teachers cycling or scooting to school. There are prize

draws and while the competition lasts for two weeks schools can submit their best five days or there are single day competitions as well. There are loads of schools in Swindon that register for this, so do find out if your child’s school has done so. If they haven’t, simply email the Big Pedal web link to someone at the school. Don’t think that your school has no chance because it’s a small school because that’s all taken into account. Also, in 2014 Ferndale Primary school won the national title in the large primary school category with two other Swindon schools in the top 20 so who’s to say it can’t be your school? With the play offs quickly approaching, the culmination of any ice hockey season is always one of great excitement. However with MK Lightning and now Guildford Flames both having made successful applications to join the Elite League next term coupled with the midseason demise of the Manchester Phoenix, fans could be forgiven for looking just ahead as events planned for the games second tier begin to gather momentum. Although final decisions are yet to be confirmed, the league’s seven clubs have already agreed to participate in the competition next season in which the league will see some pretty major changes. “There are several new areas we’re going to have to get to grips with, but we’ll adapt and anything that can help the game in this country can only be positive,” Wildcats player-coach Aaron Nell said. “One of the moves will see the clubs’ import contingent cut to three and from the season after next, all netminders will have to be British trained. We’re fortunate enough to have Stevie Lyle in net,

but the move will enable more and more British netties to gain vital ice time and the move should help to strengthen the position in future generations.” The league will also be rebranded to the ‘Premier Ice Hockey League’, meaning there is scope for Welsh and Scottish teams to become involved in the future, and with several new rinks being completed around the country, new franchises are also a distinct possibility. “With less imports, clubs will have to focus on developing more home grown players, and that will help the future of the game at the highest level, but we’ll adapt and anything that can help progress the game in this country can only be a positive step,” Nell concluded. www.swindonwildcats.com

Catering manager sheds 12 stone for epic one-day London to Paris cycle challenge After losing nearly half his body weight in an epic weight loss battle, self-confessed fast-food junkie Adam Blanchard has put his new trim physique to the ultimate test. The 28-year-old Great Western Hospital catering manager has shed 12 stone or four times the easyJet luggage allowance. And he has built on this achievement by pedalling 271 miles – the distance between London and Paris – on a static bike as part of a gruelling endurance challenge for Brighter Futures. Undergoing the gruelling challenge in the entrance of Great Western Hospital, Adam was joined on his 12-hour slog by friends and colleagues wishing to show their support. Money raised on the day was towards helping Brighter Futures which has recently reached the halfway milestone towards its £2.9 million target needed to fund specialist equipment required at the heart of Swindon’s first radiotherapy unit. Adam said: “At 28 stone, I decided enough was enough and that it was time to turn my life around. I said goodbye to Pizza Mondays, Fishand-chip Fridays and all the other days in between that were spent eating junk food and not exercising.

“As catering manager, I’m around food all the time but I’ve changed my outlook now and plan all my meals in advance. “My weight-loss journey started two years ago and it’s seen me complete my first ever half marathon last autumn – something my former 28-stone-self would never had dreamt was possible.” Adam’s new addiction to fitness sees him put on his running trainers three times a week to tackle courses of varying lengths, with the remaining days of the week filled with trips to the gym.

His new lifestyle is a far cry from the bad habits of old which saw most days start with a cooked breakfast in the GWH restaurant followed by hours at a desk before returning home to the sofa. If cycling the equivalent of London to Paris wasn’t enough, Adam is also in the middle of a strict training regime in preparation for his first London Marathon in April. He said: “It’s still surreal to think that my body is now capable of taking part in these iconic events, which do so much good for others. “You don’t need to work at GWH

Ex-England keeper helps skating duo achieve their goal Former England goalkeeper David Seaman has performed another remarkable save – by throwing his support behind ice skating partnership Christopher Boyadji and Zoe Jones as they aim for Olympic glory. David and his wife Frankie – who met while taking part in the Dancing On Ice TV show – are friends of the duo, having met them at a recent ice skating charity event in Oxford. David explained: “I was really surprised that there was not enough money for them to achieve what they wanted. We would think that the country was behind them and that is why we got involved.” His wife Frankie, a professional skater, added: “They are the current British senior pairs champions – the best in the country at the moment so we felt that we needed to give them our support to do the best they can do. I think Zoe is a remarkable role model for our sport.” Christopher Boyadji and Zoe Jones have launched a fundraising bid to support them as they take part in the World Figure Skating Championships in Finland at the end of the month – which they

donated.” Zoe added: “It all helps and I can’t tell you how grateful we are. It means that we can spend more time in training with our coach Mark Naylor. This donation from David and Frankie is great because it means that we will definitely have enough to compete at the world championships, we obviously need all the support we can get so that we can go forward to represent England at the Olympics.” Zoe was the British Champion in 2000 and 2001 in the British Senior Ladies event. After that, she decided to retire and moved to Canada to coach and build a family. Zoe, 37, is now a single mother of three children and she just returned to skating after 13 years in retirement.
