Police change priorities to tackle insecure properties and dangerous parking outside schools

After a good run of declining crime in West Swindon the police team have been hit by a series of break-ins which could have been avoided. At the West Swindon Forum on 12 March PC Tom Turner said that whilst anti-social behaviour in public places is well down, a gang of people had been at work stealing from insecure properties. “You would be surprised who is prowling around your neighbourhood trying doors; you would be surprised how many houses, garages and sheds are not locked up by the owners. Over a four night period in February there were 22 burglaries. They could have been avoided if the locks had been used.” He said several suspects had received police attention but urged people to lock up to avoid loss. The Forum agreed a change in police priorities over the next few months so that they could concentrate on: • Insecure property - reminding car and home owners to lock up; • Parking outside schools - patrolling areas where cars are habitually parked in a manner which endangers pedestrians, to remind vehicle owners of the problems they could be causing;

Bus only route put on hold The proposal to make access from Torun Way in Haydon End to Westfield Way, as set out in the master plan for Priory Vale in 2000, has been blocked by Swindon Council cabinet member for transportation councillor Peter Greenhalgh after the council received an objection from one resident. Haydon Wick councillor David Renard said he thought the council would reconsider the issue when a new cabinet is formed after May’s elections. Cllr Greenhalgh is not standing for re-election.

The congestion on the road has existed for most of the ten years since it was built, largely caused by the design of the area in the 1990s which was based on reducing car ownership and encouragement to use public transport. The council plan is to ban parking or waiting along the north side of Redhouse Way and part of the south side, and to have no waiting from Monday to Saturday 7am to 7pm on part of the south side. People living in houses fronting onto the road who park their vehicles outside their homes say their lives are going to be ruined by the restrictions imposed upon them. Yulia Todd said: “It will have a huge impact on the people living on Redhouse Way and everybody in surrounding roads. Some houses have designated parking spaces, others have a garage which is too small to get a car in, there is

no alternative to parking outside your house. “I have a baby in a carry cot; the lady across the road has a special needs child who is picked up and dropped off by taxi that stops on Redhouse Way. We don’t have the option of parking far away from the house.” Over the years people have worked out their own arrangement to park on one side of the road and Redhouse Way resident Martine Steinhart believes the parked cars have a traffic calming effect. “If there is a clear route, people will drive much faster. Not being able to park on Redhouse Way means car owners will look for spaces in nearby side streets and cul-de-sacs. It’s a much bigger problem than just one road.” The council has agreed to carry out further consultations before making a final decision.

Unfortunately, Swindon is passing on the fee to the motorist and only making the top rate unit of time available. Registration for the scheme over a mobile phone is not straightforward either. Lessons from Mother Teresa in looking after the elderly

A Westlea woman, who once worked in Calcutta with Mother Teresa, has contributed to the NHS Confederation and Local Government Association’s ‘Commission on improving dignity in care’ which published its findings at the end of February. Catherine Wescott, right, was invited to give her views as a service user representative, following her mother’s experience in a care home, and her own experience of working as a volunteer in the care sector. The Commission’s landmark report on the current status of care provision for the elderly and vulnerable, and what needs to happen to improve it received comprehensive media coverage nationally. Catherine’s recommendations were to introduce independent advocates for care home residents, and to install CCTV to safeguard staff and vulnerable adults alike. Speaking about her experience Catherine said: “My mother was in a care home for the final five years of her life, during which time I regularly stayed with her overnight, or came in first thing in the morning to make sure she was ready for the day. “As I spent so much time there I realised how pretty awful it can be, and how so many of our older relatives are stuck in rooms with nothing to do. They are literally dying of boredom. I set up an activity programme for the residents and continue to volunteer even though my mother passed away 18 months ago.” “Unfortunately, due to poor staffing and the low profile of care work in this country, the quality of care can be pretty dire in some places. But no-one’s watching over the sector and it means that poorly people are being left in their beds with their mouths white with dehydration. “In some cases, as soon as you complain about the way your relative is being treated, there are repercussions, including being ejected from the property or your relative being ill-treated. At the moment there is no way of proving

what happens, which is why I’m pushing for CCTV. “I’ve vowed now to go on doing what I can to make life better for people in care homes. I’m sure that if families knew what it’s like at the moment to live in a care home 24 hours a day they wouldn’t put their elderly relative in one.” Catherine’s view will resonate with many of the post-war baby boom generation whose parents have died or are in the latter stages of their lives. In her younger years Catherine, now a secretary at the Bible Society, spent time working with Mother Teresa’s nuns in London, running soup kitchens and caring for the poorest of the capital’s poor. Before too long she decided to go to India to find Mother Teresa herself, and spent a year and a half working on the streets of Calcutta, and teaching English to the nuns who worked in Mother Teresa’s homes for the sick and the dying, and in orphanages. “Mother Teresa told me that loneliness is the poverty of the modern world, and having seen what happens in some of the care homes in this country I would rather die in a Calcutta slum than in a UK care home.”

No charge for jubilee celebrations Swindon Council is stripping away much of the red tape and the cost of organising a street party to celebrate the Queen’s diamond jubilee. But get organised, applications for road closures have to be made by 7 May so that officers and emergency services can consider them. Alexander Harris, 10, from Grange Park, put on an informal French horn concert in early March at an afterschool cake sale at Tregoze Primary School held to raise money to enable him to play with the National Children’s Orchestra of Great Britain under 11s section. His classmates spent the day before baking with Alexander and his mum Vanessa, and helped man the cake stands which were rapidly sold out to raise £110. The talented musician who plays piano and orchestral percussion has been a member of the Swindon Young Musicians since the age of six and fell in love with the French horn three years ago. To play with the National Children’s Orchestra Alexander has to raise at least £765 in sponsorship towards the £1,530 cost of a place subsidised by the charity. At his audition he had to play two contrasting and challenging pieces, as well as sightread two pieces of music. It means for the first time that young British ice hockey players will have the opportunity to hone their skills, without having to leave the UK, for professional coaching. The hockey academy will use the Okanagan business model, established in Canada, and developed since 2009 at its sports school offshoot in St. Pölten, Austria. Youngsters will be attracted to Swindon to take up places offered at Lydiard Park Academy in Grange Park where they will follow the national curriculum and a timetable tailored to allow for ice hockey training at the Link Centre rink. There will be additional fitness training and a clear requirement that homework studies are completed and delivered on time. Players aged 16 to 18 years will attend local colleges. During term time the players will board with West Swindon families. The Okanagan players will also have the opportunity to be selected for the Swindon Wildcats teams at different levels. Headteacher Clive Zimmerman welcomed the initiative. “This is a very exciting opportunity. Partnerships with sports clubs to develop the best talent are exactly what we have been aiming for. US scholarships could be the way for talented sportsmen and women

With the sky high prices of obtaining higher education in Britain, and chronic underfunding for young people with sporting talent, a former Swindon Town youth player living in California says that more parents and children should consider applying for sports scholarships in the USA. Nick Dodd, 27, who lived in Shaw and attended Ridgeway School, is now based in Los Angeles, having secured a soccer scholarship in North Carolina under British coach Dave Sexton, son of the former Chelsea coach. After two years, playing in the Mid-Atlantic District for Junior Universities, when his team reached the national championship, he transferred to California State University at Fullerton. “We played in the Big West Conference and travelled all over the US to play,” said Nick. “One of the perks for playing at CSUF was, during Spring season, we played against the Major League Soccer teams based in Los Angeles - Chivas USA and LA Galaxy, famous for David Beckham. Nick graduated in 2010 with a BA in Communications, Public Relations and now plays semiprofessionally and coaches the men’s team at Hope International University in Fullerton and is boys academy coach for Newport Mesa

in Newport Beach. Recently he started working with the LA Galaxy youth academy. He also rubs shoulders with film and TV personalities as a player with Vinnie Jones’ Hollywood All-Star Football Club. Nick thinks playing sport in America should be considered by young people with ability. “You can’t underestimate the size of university level competition across all sports. Colleges here are on the look out for talented young people to strengthen their teams and boost their league positions. Winning a scholarship is a way to fund your education and continue to develop your sporting abilities.” If this is a path you want to investigate Nick suggests: • you and your parents start researching and planning early. Universities expect certain levels of academic ability even if you want to pursue a sporting career; • check individual university web sites for academic programmes and

levels of attainment required; • build a strong educational/sports CV, including video footage of you playing/performing; • contact the head coach at the university you’re interested in, and be persistent; • complete the academic assessment SAT or ACT test; this can be taken at different locations in Britain; • attend sports showcases held by colleges around the country.

Fitness trainer Dan Gale of Shape123 Personal Training has launched the Buggy-Function Exercise Class which he says is unique in Swindon as no other classes accommodate mums and babies together. Classes last for up to 45 minutes and are held in a local park or green area and cost £5 per session. Dan said: “The classes are designed to help mums get back in shape after the birth of their child. For a non-creative person such as myself the idea of producing anything remotely artistic seemed unlikely as I entered the workshop at Sparkle Dreams to learn how to create a gift card. However, the detailed step-bystep instructions given by Sparkle Dreams proprietor Solance Scholey meant I was able to come away with something to be proud of. The class of nine were all given the basic materials needed to create the card and were shown the various methods involved like distressing and inking edges before building up layers, and making flowers with a gem in the centre – a rather fiddly process, but with an effective end result. Pictures of cupcakes had been printed onto white card using a special kind of ink which does not run or smudge when coloured over. We used Copic pens of our choice in the same colour range – these are special pens which allow you to blend colours seamlessly, giving a very professional finish. All the elements, including a piece of lace, were then attached to the card using a special glue and foam pads for the other elements

to create a 3D effect. It was finished off with a message stamped onto an ink distressed card. I would definitely recommend giving it a go – you might surprise yourself and find, as I did, that you really do have an artistic side. Easter fun for the kids 2 - 4 April Just when we’ve all recovered from the festive onslaught that is Christmas, it’s hard to believe that the time for big cuddly bunny rabbits and chocolate eggs is virtually upon us!

We’ve teamed up with the Swindon Film Society to transform the arena to an open air cinema - all for free. There will be two showings of each film; once at 12pm and then again at 3pm.

So to keep the little-uns entertained this Easter holiday, we are offering open-air screening of some of the most popular Disney films.

The countdown begins…100 Swindon is all set to celebrate St George’s Day 23 April days to the Olympic event Swindon’s 20ft high figure of England’s patron saint will proudly parade through 18 April the town centre on Saturday 21 April to Swindon will be counting down the 100 days to the Olympics in style on Wednesday 18 April as we prepare for the 2012 games. Teaming up with Swindon Borough Council Leisure Service team, we have invited five local schools to take part in a day of demonstrations and taster sessions. We plan to create a stand out picture - 100 school children will help form the figure ‘100’ for an aerial picture to be taken. LOCOG will also be providing interactive games on the Big Screen where kids can play against other towns and cities.

The giant statue will lead a procession from Regent Circus to Wharf Green via Canal Walk featuring groups and organisations from diverse sections of the community to start the variety of entertainment on offer for the day. Spectators will be able to enjoy assorted rock and pop music throughout the afternoon and watch a whole range of entertainers, from the Britannia Majorettes and comedians to Bollywood dancers - there truly will be something for everyone. Attractions around the town centre will range from face painters to the Big Sing Thing, fairground rides, plus the chance to try out some juggling. The celebration, now in its fourth year, will show its support to the Mayor of Swindon Councilor Ray Ballman and her chosen charities Open Door and Swindon Cares.

The Big Dribble comes to Swindon 23 April The Big Dribble is England’s Hockey’s flagship event and will be visiting Swindon on Monday 23 April from 9am. The event will capture the imaginations of people around the country, raise the profile of hockey and encourage people to pick up a stick and have a go. A 100m circuit will be laid out under the Big Screen in Wharf Green, where you

and the family can ‘dribble’ a hockey ball around the track and in the other 50 towns and cities in an attempt to cover a cumulative world recording breaking distance of 2012km! And in keeping with the Olympic theme the last leg of the relay will be completed on the pitch at the Olympic Park.

Throughout the journey the team will be asking everyone to sign the giant hockey ball and write good luck messages to the GB players so that we can present it to both teams in the Olympic Hockey Stadium before the first match at the Test Event. There will be the opportunity to meet players, perhaps some celebrities, and learn more about the great sport.

Armed Forces Day 30 June Proceedings of the event will be very similar to 2011 with a formal Parade and Service held on the national Armed Forces Day – Saturday 30 June, where military personnel from the surrounding area have been invited to take part. inSwindon BID are asking military men and women to register today to receive a unique Veteran’s badge honouring any

former members of the Armed Forces who have fought in conflicts and peace keeping missions since World War Two. Anyone who registers will be invited to inSwindon BID’s special ceremony to receive the prestigious enamel lapel badge in front of their friends and family from the Mayor of Swindon on Armed Forces Day.

Young actors tackle adolescent issues for anniversary show

To celebrate their tenth year, Swindon Young Actors (SYA) are busy rehearsing for their production of the dynamic re-imagining of Spring Awakening, a powerful rock musical adaptation of the controversial 1891 German play about adolescent love, the trials of puberty and the friendships that young people build in the face of an uncomprehending world.

Swindon Young Actors take on tough subjects for their celebration performance

Featuring a cast of twenty two young performers aged from 14 to 23 years, the production is being directed by SYA founders, Mark Flitton and Julia Dickinson. The cast is also working with a team of experienced local musicians and vocal coaches, and a professional musical director. The play was banned in Germany for over 50 years due to its frank portrayal of abortion, homosexuality, rape, child abuse and

suicide. Whilst the award winning musical version features etherial rock and irreverent punk to contrast with harsh Victorian times, this production retains the shock of the original play and is not recommended for children under the age of 14. The performances will run from Thursday 26 to Sunday 29 April, 8pm at The Platform, Faringdon Road, Swindon. Tickets are £8.50 from www.swindontickets.co.uk

Wildlife photos and art wanted

Wiltshire Wildlife Trust has launched a competition to mark 50 years conserving and improving the county’s environment. The entries can be a photograph, a drawing/painting or even a piece of artwork, such as a sculpture. There are prizes for one image and one artwork from under 11 years; 11 to 18 years, and 18 years+. Shortlisted entries will be shown at the trust’s Country Comes to Town exhibition in Devizes on Saturday 21 July. books in the bigger picture On World Book Day in March, staff at Tregoze Primary School revived a tradition from 20 years ago after caretaker Peter Cook found a scrapbook of book week activity including pictures of staff dressing up as characters and putting on a show for the children. Reading recovery teacher Jane Keen taught at Tregoze in 1992 and was one of the cast for the first shows. On 22 February she narrated the Wizard of Oz with staff playing the parts, including headteacher Helen Swanson in the lead role of Dorothy. Right a picture from the Tregoze 1992 scrapbook. Well known football coach put to rest

There was a huge turnout of ex-players and friends for the funeral of Ron Sproule from Shaw in early February. A victim of cancer Ron, right, and his wife Jane started Westside football club in 1980 when their sons Jonathan and Keith could not find a team to play for. Soon there were Westside teams catering for under 7s to under 16s. The club later changed its name to Southbrook, which was chaired by Ron, who became president when illness reduced his involvement. Jane continues to be club secretary. She said: “I’d like to thank everybody who sent messages of support, they meant a lot to us, and also all who donated to Macmillan Cancer Support in memory of Ron.”

Ian Atkinson, one of Wroughton’s longest serving swimmers, has accepted an invitation from LOCOG to take joint responsibility to oversee the provision and maintenance of all the technical equipment needed by all the aquatic disciplines, whilst Georgina Mason was successful in a national club ballot to watch a session in the Olympic pool. Abbey Meads resident, grandmother and dog owner Jane Burbidge is appalled by the amount of dog mess that is left in public open spaces, preventing children from being able to play freely. However, Swindon Borough Council admits there is no easy solution to the problem. In a plea to Abbey Meads’ councillor, Peter Heaton-Jones, Jane said: “the amount of mess makes every excursion to playing fields and parks something of a nightmare, with both carers and children looking for excrement rather than running free as dogs are able to do. This means that the only really ‘clean’ areas in which children can safely play is a fenced and often vandalised playground.” At a time when there is much in the news about childhood obesity and ill health arising from lack of exercise, as well as a trend to high density housing with small gardens, Jane feels some local areas should be allocated as children only spaces, particularly playing fields and play areas. Cllr Heaton-Jones agreed and made a recommendation to Swindon Council parks manager Martin Hambidge to give some consideration to the possibility of prohibiting dogs from certain areas. However, in a written reply, Mr Hambidge explained the council has to implement byelaws to exclude dogs from public spaces. ‘The council has considered and rejected additional powers through Dog Control Orders on a number of occasions in recent years. Without these the council is unable to make any new byelaws, which would be difficult and costly to enforce.’ Whilst Jane understands that owning a dog is a huge pleasure, she feels that dog owners will want to join parents, grandparents and carers, in pressing Swindon Council to apply for Dog Control Orders, to enable everyone to enjoy Swindon’s open spaces, and make the town a better place to live.

Market hosts next generation of entrepreneurs

Enterprise students from New College will be getting a taste of life as market traders this spring, as they set up their stalls at Blunsdon Market on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays, in a bid to encourage more young people in Swindon to consider careers in business, trading and retail. The scheme is the brain-child of Justin Tomlinson MP, who himself was a young entrepreneur at school and went on to run his own marketing and printing business before election to Parliament. He said: “This partnership between New College and Blunsdon Market will give students a real life experience of trade and enterprise, as well as instilling some business discipline. “The students will have to conduct their market research, organise and promote their stalls, and speak to real customers. They’ll also have to make sure they’re ready to open on time, or risk losing their pitch.” Justin considers this to be a key element in Swindon’s response to the Mary Portas review on revitalising British high streets. “This project will equip a new generation of Swindon entrepreneurs with the skills and experience to boost trade in the town. We all know that Lord Alan Sugar started his business career as a market trader, and one of the most popular tasks on The Apprentice is the market stall trading day. Hopefully this opportunity will inspire the next millionaire.” New College Enterprise team leader Gerry Darlington said: “The students begin their market research at the end of March, so we look forwards to what that reveals and how the project will progress.”

Repairs to historic bridge by railway

A bridge over the River Ray, that could have been a strategic barrier to advancing invaders during World War II, will be closed for eight months from 18 May to allow for rebuilding to cater for heavier use in years to come.

On either side of the bridge next to the Swindon & Cricklade Railway Society’s Blunsdon Station base are 9 large concrete ‘tank traps’ installed in 1940 as part of the ‘Red Line,’ one of a series of military barriers around which the army and the home guard would rally if an invasion had been successful. A sculpture of a soldier, pictured above, stands overlooking the river to commemorate the preparedness of the country to resist invasion. The tank traps are not listed for protection and the work on the bridge, which includes widening the road, will require three of the

structures to be removed. Contractors Mouchel will make a full photographic survey of the site for the Wiltshire and Swindon record centre in Chippenham. Once the bridge works are completed two of the tank traps will be returned to their original positions.
