SHOCK Secondary School doubt for 1986 Readers of the Link with an interest in the proposed West Swindon secondary school will have been shocked by the news that negotiations to purchase the land for the school have broken down. A price cannot be agreed between the landow:er and Wiltshire County Council. The Council has decided to impose a Compulsory Purchase Order on the owner to sell at a price established independently. However a CPO has to be submitted to the Minister for the Environment for approval. If he disagrees with it or the landowners objects and appeals, then delays will go on and on for a long time. Wilts. County Council had hoped to complete the land deal by the summer so that early site works could be done. This would have allowed building works on the school to start in January 1985 for completion in summer 1986. It is now unlikely that this time-scale can be achieved. It is clear that parents of children due to start secondary school in September 1986 must consider where they will go.

Rising Fives Nothing is certain here either. A Wilts County Council spokesperson told the Link that he hoped additional classrooms would be available at Freshbrook School by the summerlerm This would allow children from the whole of West Swindon with birthdays in the summer to go to school in April and not September. He also outlined a further problem arising from the fact that any extra teachers required have to be paid from the 1984/85 budget. This has not been agreed by Wilts. County Council. Until it is, the Education Department do not know how much money it has to employ teachers. But the Link was assured, "All will be known in the next few weeks."!

Recently there were a series of public meetings where parents were consulted as to where their children should go to school in September of 1984 and 1985. It was eventually decided that Toot hill and Westlea children will go to Ridgeway, Wroughton and Freshbrook children will go to to Bradon Forest at Purton. Community Centre Progress Those who hang around Freshbrook Village Centre will have been im pressed by the speed at which tFe Freshbrook Community Centre has been growing. It looks as if it will be finished about two months early in May. The Freshbrook Village Group residents organisation is working hard to keep up with management decisions so that they are ready to take the building over.

Window But in Toothill , anybody loitering around outside the shop will have noticed the slow building of Toothill's community centre which will not be finished in June as planned. The Stained Glass Window project is moving and it will be publicised more in the future. Over in Westlea, next to Eastleaze, the Upper Shaw Farmhouse conversion to a community centre will be ready in June. It will offer more space for playgroups and toddler groups and meeting space for community groups of all kind. Westlea Scout Group The 1st Westlea Scout Group was formed on 22nd June 1983. A very successful Cub Scout Pack has a compliment of 24 Cub's with three Leaders and many boy's on a waiting list to join. The Group also has a very active committee and with the assistance of the Cub's parents have arranged several fund raising activities during the short period the Group has been in existance. Although as I have said the Group is, and especially the Cub pack, flourishing, we now have Cub's and boy's in the Westlea area who are the age for Scouts. As Scouter in Charge of the Group I am looking for someone, preferably with experience, to start a Scout Troup. Rainbow Single Parent Group I joined Rainbow several months ago and I'm very glad I did. When the group was formed, a few months before I joined, people were looking for mutual support and help and have obviously found it. The group is all about becoming independent and gaining self-confidence, with friends togive you moral and practical support. If you are in the throes of a very upsetting separation or divorce, then the group can give you support and advice, but it is not a miserable affair with everyone moaning.- we do have our moans but also boost each others confidence and cheer each other up. If you don't need support but simply need new friends, then I think you will find, as I did that Rainbow meets that need. The friendship of people in the same position is valuable. A very important function of Rainbow, to me, is that your children meet other children who havn't got a Dad, or Dad does'nt live with them.

What happens? Well we meet on Fridays between 1.30 and,3.30pm at Toothill School Comn't unity Room. We chat and coffee or tea while the children play. Most weeks we do something like have lunch together, go out for a drink or meet at someones house. Of course, everyone can't manage it always but it doesn't matter. At Christmas we had a party for the children complete with Father Christmas and evening meal for us. I expect that in the summer we will do more outdoors at weekends. If you work on Fridays we are planning meetings on Sunday after-noons if we can find a venue. If you are interested come along and share your ideas. Here to work with you ROGER OGLE is the Community Development Officer working for Thamesdown Borough Ebmctl in west Swindon. "I came here 5 years ago when there were only 500 houses occupied and it was possible to know a large number of people. I still know lots of people but its a bit more difficult to keep in contact now when there are 5,500 dwellings in the area. I work with community groups across the area in their attempts to get activities off the ground and running -toddler & playgroups, retired people's groups and residents organisation who are in contact with the council about environmental problems, the provion of facilities and information about the western expansion. The biggest workload at the moment comes from working with the volunteer management committees preparing to take on the running of the three community centres to open soon. Lots of decisions have to be made about how these buildings can be made a real part of the community."

My name is CHRISTINE WOOD and I am the Neighbourhood Worker/Arrivals Officer employed by Thamesdown (bun cii. Part of my work is calling on new residents in new houses with information about doctors, schools, community facilities and generally helping them feel welcome. I'm sure I've missed some of you, but if you would like to contact me, I will be happy to visit you or send you an information booklet. I am also the Neighbouhood Worker of Toothill. This involves being in contact with the community groups in Toothill -senior citizens, playgroups, mums & toddlers, youth club etc. All these groups are run by volunteers who do a tremendous amount of work in bringing people together. I can give support, encouragement & information to existing groups and help people with new ideas set up new groups i.e. lone parents, community centre management committee, good neighbour scheme."

ROD GRANT is the Youth Worker in the west Swindon area. "I'm employed on a 5 year project funded from the governments urban aid programme and by Thamesdown Council. My job is to becontact with young people who do not want to be involved in youth clubs and also to help local youth clubs become more attractive. This can only happen if residents of west Swindon become invol ved with the clubs as volunteers. I will be running a "course" soon which will I hope break down the mysteries of youth work -see elsewhere in this Link. I really would like to hear from people wanting to know more. Its too easy to write young people off. They do need adults to work with them and I would like to break down the barriers. Just think, in 4 years time when I've gone, the teenage population will have doubled and will continue to get bigger as the area continues to grow. WOMEN & CANCER Women are invited to attend the Women's National Cancer Control Campaign Caravan for the Cytotest (Smear Test) and advice on self-examination for breast cancer. No appointments are necessary. The tests are FREE. The tests will be carried out by female medical and nursing staff. The Pre-School Playgroups Association are carrying out a survey in West Swindon of all the houses where children under the age of five lives. The survey will last over the next four months and involves answering a few questions about the ages of under fives in the house and whether parents use playgroups and toddler groups. THe P.P.A. hope that all families with under 5's will help them when the interviewer calls round.

THAMESDOWN CONSERVATION VOLUNTEERS Richard Keating, Landscape Architect with Thamesdown Borbugh Council recently wrote in the 'Link' about maintaining and manageing existing hedgerows in West Swindon. In a collaborative venture the Council has linked up with a local group of volunteers interested in preserving the character and diversity of the local enviroment. Recent work by the Thamesdown Conservation Volunteers has revolved around the traditional technique of 'hedge-laying' in the area currently being developed to the West of Carrefour. Old agricultural hedges abound here but due to neglect they have begun to sprawl and deteriorate; sadly the developers' solution is often to bulldoze such hedges and associated trees out of existence in the race to build to time

and budget constraints. When thinned and laid however, a hedge provides a visually atteactive screen and a valuable wildlife habitat whilst being of manageable proport ions. Wimpey Homes are among the developers who encourage retention of the hedgerows where possible and they are supporting the volunteers and the local council in their efforts. I'm sure we would all prefer to live with hedges than with fences but time to act is limited so the more people who can be involved in this urgent (but enjoyable) work the more attractive will be the end result. Hedge-laying is only one aspect of the wor of the TCV. Among our activities we are involved in erosion control work at Barbur Castle Iron Age hill fort; Canal clearance (at Kingshill and the Moredon Aquaduct); tree planting at Shaw Farm; drainage improvements at Cricklade Water Meadows; footpath work on the Ridgeway and elsewher management of several nature reserves from Ashton Keynes (wetlands) to Pewsey Down (chalk grassland) and a range of other evemts. The group has been founded almost a year and has many active members of all ages several from West Swindon. More would, of course, be welcome. We generally meet on Sundays and can provide transport, tools and instruction in techniques used. WILL CABLE KILL COMMUNITY? Cable TV is we are told only about six months away from West Swindon. A growing number of channels will offer 20-30 choices of entertainment, music, weather forecasts, news, films, advertising and educational information. Britain apparently has the highest ownership of vieos and home computers per house hold in the world. This means that huge numbers of people receive their entertainment within the home. Cable will offer more attraction to stay there. Whilst the housebound and elderly will benefit from the increased opportuntities that cable will offer by way of the two way communication systems available, it makes me wonder whether people who are able bodied and capable of being involved in the community life will do so. Will we see fewer people participating and doing things? Are the community centres being built at Toothill and Freshbrook and Westlea expensive white-elephants? Will all the new home entertainment keep people away from each other? Perhaps the idea of 'community' does not mean anything to people. I would like to know whether the idea of living in an area or being involved in activities together strikes people as important? Roger Ogle.

Video as a medium is a form of communication, a very powerful way of talking to people and holding their attention. The beer will be supplied by Bass Charrington and the price will be right to allow lots of neighbourly fun a comfortable club atmosphere. We hope that besides providing ahealthy source of funds to help run the rest of the community centre, the Bar will bring in residents who will see the range of other activities on offer and tempt them to join in. Volunteers are needed to serve on a Bar management committee and the bar needs a name. See page 3 and 4 to register your interest and your ideas. During the day, the lounge area of the bar can be used for other community activities - for instance a creche, toy library or meetings.

,The Freshbrook Village Group wanted to put on an exhibition of the new community centre plans and also to carry out a survey amongst residents to find out what you are interested in and , want from the new building. But time has caught up with us! The new centre will be ready.3 months ahead of schedule, so we've had to get on anorganise the initial activities ,. 0 and sort out some of the detail concerning management.

We know many residents will not come to the Freshbrook Village Group Annual General Meeting on 18th April but many might be willing to fill in a questionnaire. There is a great deal of interest in the community and although people might not go to meetings, they will probably join in 47 the various activities going on in the new centre. Freshbrook's new community centre will have two very special rooms. One will be a 'cafe' type of space where you can get a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit or even a light meal -all at moderate cost. Community centres can be frightening places - unless you have a reason for going there, you don't. The idea of a 'cafe' is to get people into the building without demanding a commitment. By doing this, maybe the centre can give people a sense of Ii community' without having to be involved in a group or activity.

The other room will be used as a licensed bar which will have a membership made up of Fresh I brook residents only. The bar will be a friendly place which we hope will bring in a different kind of user to the community centre - people who would not normally go near the place BUT WHAT SHOULD THESE ROOMS BE CALLED. WHY DON'T YOU SEND IN YOUR IDEAS. PRIZES WILL BE AWARDED FOR THE SELECTED ENTRIES. I THINK THE CAFE SHOULD BE CALLED.

FRESH NEWS From Freshbrook Small Beginnings In 1982 a small group of people met together in a home to share their Christian experience and to see the 'elevance of the Bible for them. They were people like you who had moved from various parts of the country to the Western Development, Swindon. In early 1983 services were held on a regular basis at the Community Centre and in May the Church was formally constituted. In addition to the Sunday services informal meetings for Study, Prayer and Friendship have been held each week. This was the beginning of the work which has become known as the FPESHBROOK EVANGELICAL CHURCH.

THE CHURCH is made up of people JESSIE & WILL COLLIS A retired couple who moved from Richmond to Freshbrook approximately two years ago. I asked Jessie what brought her to Jesus, She said: "I was brought up as a Christian but did not see my need until F started nursing. Then I attended a Baptismal Service and having heard the gospel explained clearly, I came to know Jesus as my Saviour." Will's story is that he attended church functions but only under pressure from others. He came to know the Lord personally after marrying Jessie. Will feels it was the singing, teaching and company of other christians that helped him understand his need.

It is situated in FRESI-IBROOK The Church is EVANGELICAL because it is true to the 'Evangel' - the Good News of Jesus Christ in God's Word, the Bible. It is a G-IURQ-I - a group of people held together by a desire to worship God, and learn more about Him. HOLIDAY SPECIAL CALLING ALL BOYS

AND CIES Another special iiek for the children is being arranged this summer from 20 - 24th August each morning from 10 - 12 noon. Children aged 3 and over are welcome. The programme will include Bible Stories, Singing, Competitions, and other activities. At the Freshbrook Community Centre.

RON HEPEPATFI An Airman serving at R.A.F. Wroughton. He attended church and related organisations, but for the wrong reasons. He came to a saving relationship with God three years ago. Ron says: "Since knowing Christ I have been really blessed and the latest blessing is my forthcoming marriage to Sue in August."

ALAN HOOKINS He arrived in Freshbrook almost three years ago, after living all of his previous forty odd years in South East London. Alan was one of those people who went to Church each Sunday in the same way as most of us go to school or work, it was something you just did. "Christians are people who go to church, so I must be a Christian, was about as deep as I was prepared to think." That was before the Billy Graham Crusade at Harringay in 1954. It was at one of the Crusade meetings that he learned that a Christian is a person who has committed his life to the Lord Jesus Christ. He also learned that Jesus commits Himself to us to save us and keep us. Jesus has kept His promise to Alan and thirty years on He is still with him. REGULAR MEETINGS SUNDAY 10 a. m.

THE BIBLE AN OPEN BOOK? When was the last time, if ever, you picked up a Bible and read it for yourself? The Bible is meant to be read by everyone, not just be 'experts' in churches. The Bible is God's word to mankind and contains many important and very relevant truths. Read it (preferably in a modem translation such as the New International Version or the Good News Bible) perhaps starting with one of the gospels that tell the story of Jesus' life on earth. To whet your appetite here are two passages from John's Gospel (which means good news). In the first passage John describes who Jesus is and why He came. John 1:9-18 (NIV) "The true light that gives light to every man was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognise him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God. The Word became flesh and lived for a while among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who caine from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Jesus himself speaks in the second passage, about the meaning of true freedom. John 8:31-36 (NW) "To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free". They answered him, We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it for ever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed."

EASTER : Who is this Jesus ? The events of Easter are FACT not fiction. It concerns the Man who cane back from the dead. He was born in an occupied country. Within weeks of His birth His family fled as refugees. Returning to His own village He grew up and took the trade of a carpenter. At the age of 30 He went teachin and healing. He was a gentle man and yet possessed power and authority that was startling. He never owned a house, never held any official position, He had few understanding friends and many bitter enemies. At the age of 33 He was falsely accused, tried and sentenced to death. YOU KNOAT WHAT HAPPENED: It's not a nice clean romantic story it's messy, ugly - the details are unpleasant. The man was scourged. He was taunted spat upon. Eventually He was forced to carry His gibbet to the place of execution. He collapsed on the way and an onlooker was forced to help. The 'Man' was laid on the wood and spikes were driven through His hands and feet. The stake was set upright - His enemies jeered and His followers drifted away confused and frightened. For six hours the 'Man' hung on the cross and said: 'Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.' WHAT TX) YOU MAKE OF THAT? As the darkness of death closed in He gave His only cry of pain. My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?'

'Father into your hands I commend My spirit' They jabbed a spear into His side - but He was already dead. THREE DAYS LATER The Man who cane back from the dead stood outside His tomb and said to a friend, Why are you weeping?' That evening He stnod with startled followers and said, 'Peace be with you.' Eight days later He said to a man who could not believe, 'Put your finger here and see My hands, and put out your hand and place it in My side; do not be faithless but believe.' WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THAT! Within six weeks He was seen by at least 550 people on 11 different occasions and His enemies could do nothing about it. After nearly 2,000 years He is the central character of human history. WHAT DO YOU MAKE OF THAT! Who is this 'MAN' called Jesus? He said 'The Father (God) and I are one' and 'I say emphatically that anyone who listens to my message and believes in God who sent Me has eternal life and will never be condemned for his sin'. This is a short account of what happened that first Easter. The happiest people in the world are those who have accepted God's gift of salvation and know the power and authority of Christ in their lives.

Rickie is married with two small children and has lived in the western expansion for six years. He has represented the area as a Labour councillor for the last three years. As Chairman of Thamesdown Councils Community Planning Committee, he has committed himself and has argued successfully for the finance to provide much needed and necessary community services and facilities in West Swindon. He has been seen in the forefront on many major local issues. These include the building of community centres at Toothill and Freshbrook, the conversion of Upper Shaw Farm and the provision of a community suite soon to be built at Westlea School. Rickie has always been committed to local village health provion and has fought successfully for council premises for a doctor to set-up practice in Freshbrook. He will not be satisfied until Toothill, Freshbrook and Westlea all have local health facilities. A rate freeze has been brought about this year by good housekeeping, thus proving a committment to spending our money wisely to benefit all sectors of the rnmunity. 27 years old. Lived in Swindon 22 years. Lived in Freshbrook 3 years. A Geophysicist for Burmah Oil Exploration Ltd. Living in a new estate area clearly calls for pressure to develop local services and facilities. These should represent good value for ratepayers money. In recent years however, local politics has been dominated by Labour and Conservatives putting party before people. This is wrong. Such issues as bus routes, school and health provision should not he a matter of party dispute. There must be more consultation with local people. As a councillor I would take full notice of local opinion. I alrady have the experience in helping council tenants take up problems with the council. If necessary I will take an independant line to defend your interests. I am strongly opposed to central governments gradual erosion of the power of elected local government. This inevitably damages local services as central government is not in touch with local needs. Finally, I urge you to use your vote. It's no good complaining about things and just staying at home. Change will only come if you are willing to go out and vote for it.

CONSERVATIVE ROWAN SWAINSON Rowan Swainson is a young professional photographer working in a Government Research Establishment. He is an Associate of the British Institute of Profeonal Photographers and member of the Institute of Professional Civil Servants. Since his apprenticeship with British Rail in Derby, Rowan, aged 30, has tralled the world and worked for various private sector organisations. After originally buying a starter home in west Swindon, he has now moved to a house in Woodchester.

DOGS YET AGAIN THIS IS NOT THE FIRST AND IT WON'T BE THE LAST LETTER CONCERNING IRRESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERS. It is unfortunate I suppose that living in Kendal I am on the main route to the parkland where most dog owners in the area exercise their dogs, I am more aware of the thoughtlessness and complete lack of consideration for residents' gardens and prop-erty that some dog owners have.

Only yesterday I saw a woman with her English Sheepdog on the lead, stood waiting while it 'did its business' in the middle of my neighbour's lawn - Perhaps I should have taken a photo for you to prints I would like to ask all dog owners in the area to please have some respect for the gardens and property of the other residents. GLASS In the November 1983 issue of The Link, we asked readers to suggest names for the new Leisure Centre being built at the heart of West Swindon. Quite a few people responded and later in March this year, Thamesdown Council ran a competition to find a name. Sharon McColl, 13, of Lethbridge Road, Old Town was a joint winner with the Link, your very own community newspaper. She told the Link that she had seen a copy of the paper at a friends house and thought it a good name for the Centre. And there we have it "The Swindon Link Centre".

WORKING FOR THE COMMUNITY

Some of the work that the above committee of volunteers is involved in at present include... The Registration of the centre with the Charity Commission this has now been completed and the centre is now a registered Charity No. 288852. There is to be a Cafe in the Lounge area which will be run by volunteers. There is also to be a Licenced Bar in the Small hall, some of the committee have been on a bar management course which was arranged by BASSCHARRThGTON who are to supply the beer to the centre. Fund-raising is a important part of the committee's work to assist the development of activities etc It is also the committee's aim to work towards an effective management structure. These are just some of the area's the committee is involved in at present. If you have any skill s to offer with any of the following area's i.e... Fund-raising, Running the Cafe, Producing News Letter's or any helpful idea's please contact any of the committee members listed above.

NEW SCHOOL WHO GOES-UNCERTAINTY

A start, at last, has been made on west Swindon's secondary school. A completion is hoped for in mid 1986 to allow a first year intake in September of that year. The new school will offer 900 places for 11 to 16 year olds. One year at a time will be accepted (180 children) and the total will be reached in September 1990. In a report to Thamesdown Council's Community Planning Committee, Social Development Officer Andrew Hake said Wiltshire County Council had already admittedjas too small to take all the west Swindon children requiring secondary schooling. He said the annual output of eleven year olds from Toothill, Freshbrook, Westlea and Oliver Tomkins schools was over 250 children. With two more primary schools to be opened by Sept ember 1986, there would about 350 children needing places by 1990. Mr. Hake said Wiltshire County Council could go on bussing children or they could start planning another secondary school, but land had not been set aside for this purpose. Wiltshire County Council has not made public the new school's catchment area. As it is located in Freshbrook, there is a fair chance that children from that area will attend the school. However, Toothill and Westlea are the furthest communities away from the new school and there must be considerable doubt as to whether any or all of the children from those areas will go there.

RICKIE RE-ELECTED

In the recent elections for a councillor to represent west Swindon on Thamesdown Council, Rickie Midwinter (Labour Party) was reelected with 1,819 votes in a 37% turnout. The other candidates Rowan Swainson (Conservatives) and Zyg Sarnowski (SDP) received 1,367 and 346 votes respectively.

STONES SNUBBED Thamesdown Council's Arts and Recreation Department's idea to place specially sculptured blocks of stone at various points around vest Swindon has had a mixed reception from councillors. Because the area is supposed to be so bland archit4urally, the ertion of sculptures at crucial points would help travellers find their way around by following landmarks. Toothill councillor R.Nidwinter told other councillors that west Swindon residents shald be consulted on the proposals otherwise the sculptures would not mean anything.

PRINCE CHARLES Prince Charles recently hit out at architects and by suppestion planner; for being out of touch with people. What do Link readers think of this sculptures idea? Has Thamesdown got it wrong? Would sculptures help you find your way around and get you to identify with your community better? Perhaps a few well placed maps indifferent parts of the area would be a better idea!!

St. Mar Churck 4diarLTr e-goz Not everyone may know that the old parish church in Lydiard Park, jOst behind Lydiard Mansion, is in its own way one of the most remarkable of the thousands of little parish churches in the country. 0000000000000000000000900 It is not just that it retains the old pews (with their : doors) and such things as the Royal coat of arms, medieval : stained glass and wall-paintings. Tho rewarkable thing is : the collection of monuments to the St. John family which :ate from the years before and during the English Civil War. A new guide to the church and the monuments has just :been produced, containing a number of drawings - two of :which are shown here. This aims to answer such questions : as 'How old is the church?' •'ere members of the family :portrayed in the monuments all worthy and upstanding :ri1emrs of the nobility?'. (Incidentally, the answer to :that question, sadly is 'NO'). The guide is price 20p., •available in the church or in the mansion.

The church, and the park, is within walking distance : of West Swindon (15 minutes walk from parts of Freshbrook) the park is always open, and Lydiard Mansion is open normal hours Monday-Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Worn e n s Health Group Swindon Womens Health Groupformed following a 6 week course run by the Workers Eduction Association and Thamesdown Voluntary Service Centre and Health in January 1983. The group aims to encourage the self education of women on health issues in its wider sense, and to this end it meets on the first Wednesday of every month at the W.E.A. (7.30 - 9.30 pm.) 36a Regent Street. It invites a speaker to talk about health-related topics. New faces are welcome. The group is also an active one and has been involved in three major projects, the organisation of a Health Day which was held on May 12th (80 people attended) the initiation ofthe Thamesdown Association for a Well Women Centre and participation and the provision of volunteers for the Priory Road Well Women Clinic,open Tues(ay 5.30 -8.00pm in Park South. Other areas of interest for future projects include setting up self-help groups and providing a permanent information tank on health issues. I westlea community centre The new Westlea Community Centre at Upper Shaw Farm is due to open very soon. As you will know from the 'Link" and from the drawings and models that have been displayed at several Residents Association meetings: the Centre will consist of the Farmhouse - which has been extensively re-modelled - and a "purpose-built" small hall (1) with a lirng building which contains a kitchen (2) and store (3)

The 'round floor of the Farmhouse will have a "Multipurpose" room (4) a large circulation lobby (5), Ladies, Gents and Wheel-chair toilets (6,7&8). The upper floor of the Farmhouse has two Meeting/Club Rooms (9&10) and the rest of the floor has been arranged so that it may be used as further Meeting Rooms and another, smaller kitchen or may be used as a Steward/Caretakers flat. Outside there is a covered pram park and extensive car parking has been provided. Part of the garden area has been fenced off to provide a safe play area where the little ones can play without the worry of dogs, traffic etc.

1We hope the Farm will become the centre for many Community activities. Thre are already a Playgroup and a Mums and Toddlers Group. The 1st. Westlea Cub Scouts will be moving to the Farm too! They hope to have a Scout Troop going soon.

At the moment we meet at the Sunshine Room off Langstone Way,but it is hoped,if problems are sorted out,to meet at Upper Shaw Farm where we will have the extra space we desperately need! -

PLAYGROUP & TODDLERS A new Playgroup has started at Upper Shaw Farm. The group, at present, operates only four mornings a week - Tuesday to Friday : 09:15 to 12:15, with up to sixteen children at each session. It is hoped to increase the intake to twenty four early in 1985. The playgroup uses a room designed with that purpose in mind and, we believe, it offers the largest purpose built facility of its kind in the Swindon area. The staff and committee of the Upper Shaw Farm playgroup and Westlea Under-Fives work in close co-operation to provide as comprehensive a 'service' as possible for under-fives in the area; however as this playgroup is a relatively new venture, we are still rather short of funds and equipment and, therefore, any offers of help - practical or financial - will be, therefore, gratefully received!

LINK CONCERN BRINGS CARREFOUR ACTION

Thank you John Manson of Selby Crescent and a 'concerned resident' of Oakwood Road, Westlea who wrote to The Link in response to articles about trolleys littering the area. Carrefour have decided to do something about them.

Tony Parlett, manager of the superstore, has told The Link that the company have been very concerned about the problem and he has now decided to buy a van and employ somebody whose sole job it will be to drive round the community searching for trolleys, then taking them back to Carrefour. Tony will also be improving the telephone reporting system so residents can ring in, inform the store of stray trolleys and be told when they will be picked up. NEW VISIONS FOR THAMESDOWN

Thamesdown Borough Council has produced a long report entitled "New Visions for Thamesdown." It looks at what the council should do in 10 to 15 years time when present known commitments to growth and expansion of the town are achieved. The Council has asked for public discussion and comment on the ideas put forward in New Visions. But whatever goes on in the future is based on what happens in the past, as well as now. Here's your chance to speak out on what you think of Thamesdown and in particular west Swindon. What do you think of the place we live in? Are there enough jobs? What about schools, health facilities, transport, community provision? Have you views on whether these things are good, bad or could be worse? For the last six months, a steering committee of the Westlea Residents Association has been working with the council to set up the new community centre at Upper Shaw Farm. Currently the building works are three months behind schedule and difficulties have arisen over the terms of the lease. BUT A PLAYGROUP WILL START IN SEPTEMBER. A room has been finished early to allow this greatly needed facility to get going. The building works have resulted in a really exciting environment being created which incorporates the charm of an old farmhouse to meet the needs of a modern functional community centre. CELEBRATE YOUR BABY When a new baby arrives in the family, many parents feel they want to have a special occasion to celebrate, to say "thank-you," to recognise the baby as an important person and publicly to give him or her a name. For generations a service of "christening" (the same a baptism) has been seen as the way to meet this need. However, baptism is a service with a definite Christian meaning. It is a sign of turning from evil to faith in Jesus and of beginning a new life with Him.

The service

takes it for granted that parents bringing their child for baptism are already thoroughly committed to Jesus and will bring the child up in the Christian faith. For many parents this commitment is not what they want, and baptism is not really an appropriate special occasion for their baby. SERVICE FOR WEST SWINDON Over recent weeks many of you will no doubt national and local radio broadcasts as well as have noticed several man at work in the BBC 1, BBC 2, ITV, Channel 4, mv, Central TV area busily digging trenches in the roads. and TVS. The workforce is part of Swindon Cable's activities to lay cable TV lines to about 5,000 homes in the arri in preparation for a completely new cable TV service which is due to start in mid-September. Many residents of Toothill,Freshbrook and Westlea must by now realise it is the company that is digging up almost every pavement in our area. Pavements that will never be resurfaced to match the existing tarmac. Pavements that in some cases are less than 12 months old and few more than 5 years. The result of Swindon Cable coming to our area is the permanent defacing of our pavement system - which must amount to one of the worst acts of

vandalism yet seen on any new housing development. We are told that being the first area in the UK to be connected with the new 'broadband' cable will bring us untold benefits - it is a pity the hightech promise is not matched by a high tech method of laying the cable instead of the crude system being used. In a recent letter to residents of Selby Crescent, Freshbrook apologising for a series of power cuts due to cable laying the company advised 'it is inevitable that we will experience some teething problems'. Should we let ourselves be regarded as guinea-pigs and treat the ugly scars left on our pavements as a 'teething problem'? Surely not. Ace Thamesdown Council happy with the the result of cable laying in an environment they have worked so hard to create? Surely not. Will many West Swindon residents be happy to subscribe to Cable TV. until the company resurface our pavements? Surely not.

More Carrefour Trolleys It's an Offence to remove them

From Mrs.E.Jackson, Woodchester,Westlea. I am dismayed to read the report on trolleys in the September issue of The Link. No mention of it being an offence to remove trolleys was made. The suggestion that people 'telephone' to have offending trolleys collected is both impertinent and absurd. I am sure I speak for the majority of Westlea residents when I state that we should not be expected to bear the expense of this futile exercise, nor do we wish the 'man and van' to become a familiar sight. WE DO NOT WANT THE TROLLEYS BROUGHT OUT ONTO THE STREETS. Please make it clear in the next issue of The Link that it is an offence to remove trolleys from the centre. It is the people who bring them out who are the offenders not the trolleys. Your coverage of this isssue is an encouragement to people to bring the trolleys out - a full-time collection service being laid on for them.

No amount of appeals in The Link and all the signs in the world are going to stop Carrefour shoppers from taking trolleys out of the District Centre if it is convenient to them, and unless Carrefour can prove that a customer intend to permanently deprive the company of a trolley it is virtually impossible to bring about a successful prosecution. As a result of public irritation and publicity in The Link, Carrefour are doing something to remove the trolleys that litter the area. However, unsatisfactory a solution this method is, at least the enviroment looks better for it. Tony Parlett Carrefours Manager, thinks the experiment is working quite well so far, but more time is needed to tell if it is being successful. It is very doubtful whether reading The Link encourages people to remove trolleys from Carrefour, nor do requests not to have much effect, but The Link can ask those who care about the enviroment to act by reporting trolleys to be removed. Mayor opens Community Centres

3 Schools being built Three new schools are being built and will be ready over the next couple of years. The second Freshbrook School will be open anyday now (top) Shaw Ridge School (middle) located just to the north of Westlea next to Upper Shaw Farm Community Centre will provide primary school places for children living in Westlea and w from September 1985. The bottom photograph shows the site of the West Swindon Secondary School, on the edge of Lydiard Park in Freshbrook to be ready for September 1986. The playing fields have been made ready and the long jump pit created, building works will start early in the new year.

Once again I have read the Toothill Link' (No.41) and find nothing in it for me. I call myself an 'in-between' but other people may call me a nobody. What does your newspaper offer me? I have a black and white television. I am too old to have a baby so there can be no celebrations what can you expect with no husband either? With the hard life I've had over the past five years I no longer go to church - it did'nt help. I can't swim so there is no good joining a swimming club. My age is against me I have never borrowed a basket or trolley from either Spar or Carrefour. I have nothing to sell, nor do I have the money to buy from adverts. I have no young children that need to go to playgroup and I miss out on 'Mums and Toddlers' groups also. Computors frighten me. As for getting what I am entitled to regarding catching the Benefits Bus, you don't say where it will take me. I can't play bridge. I know nothing about Art although I do admire some painting etc., but would'nt know a Rembrandt if I saw one. Your Learning at Leisure' in West Swindon looks good for the younger generation but

what about the in-between people like myself that live on their own. Those with eyesight failing,lumbago,fibrositis etc. that feel the other life cannot come soon enough. The New Visions for Thamesdown also look promisiong but I doubt if I shall be around in 10 - 15 years time. I will pay the £1 membership fee for the bar in the Toothill Community Centre but will you try to imagine how I will feel walking in on my own. I will not be hiring the hall - I have nothing to look forward to. For all my complaints - and I do feel let down - I am pleased to see that an awful lot has been do ne for the younger generation. Lets hope that they appreciate it, but how about helping or looking into what can be done for the people who are 'in-betweens' like myself

Seconds from Disaster A serious accident was avoided in Toothill on 30th November when a fire involving petrol cans and a large butane gas cylinder was put out by the fire brigade in Harlech Close, Toothill. A site hut used by workman laying cable television ducts melted by the force of the heat. Graham Clarke, who lives opposite where the hut had been placed said he had seen smoke at dinner time, just as his wife and a neighbour were leaving to pick up their children from school, flames were licking around the doorway, "within minutes there was a ball of flame and two explosions. The flames, whipped up by the wind, reached right across the road. The fire chief told me that if the gas cylinder had gone off, the houses around could have been very badly damaged". Mrs.Chris Clarke added that it was a very frightening experience "You see these huts around completely unattended, I'm worried that this should not happen again". ******** Residents who find one of these huts put down near them are advised to check or enquire about the contents and report whether inflammable or volatile materials are stored unguarded.

She will be respons-ible for developing groups and activities at the Link and will be making contact with existing groups during early 1985.

A big breakthrough has been made in council tenant relations. In an attempt to personalise Thamesdown's housing services. Council tenants are now able to call in at a part-time local housing office based at the new Toothill Community Centre. The first time such a scheme has been tried.

Rather than install the network with excessively ugly overhead cabling (which some cable franchises intend) we agreed with the Department of Trade & Industry and Thamesdown, to install the network underground. This method of pipe or ducts will last for at least 30-50 years, thereby avoiding the need to dig up the streets again. It is worth noting that our predecessor company applied to Thamesdown to install a network at the planning stage on the Western Expansion, but this was rejected because Cable TV was deemed a thing of the past!

GLASS CUT TO SIZE

All the work and procedures being followed on site are those dictated to us by the Highways Authority and Thamesdown. The quality of the work undertaken, is checked by Thamesdown officials who are on site. It is without precedent and unfortunately wholly uneconomic to re-surface the entire surface of the pavement. We are continuing to investigate other methods of laying cable, using boring, and to try to reduce the colour difference between the new finish and the existing pavement. However, we have now gained permission from the Highways Authority to re-instate the trench shortly after the trench has been opened. We are also co-operating with Thamesdown and the local builders to ensure duct is installed at the time of building. This does however depend equally on the builders. I have personally also reviewed all aspects of our contractors working practices. All residents of a street will be coiled on and consulted, wherever possible, before our contractors start work. All trenches should be closed by the evening. If not, they should be lit and protected. All trenching and re-instatement should be safe. If it is not, we wish to know about it, and you should call Graham Parsons, the Project Manager, on 615601
