Designed by architects from Lancashire, it will provide locals with many facilities including a skittle alley, pool table, darts area and a children's room. Dear Resident, I am pleased to have been given the opportunity of writing a -Few words at a time when quite important changes are to take place in the Local Government administration of your area. It is now more than six years since the boundary issue between North Wiltshire District Council and the Thamesdown Borough Council was raised and the amount of new development which has taken place in the area since then has been enormous. The North Wiltshire District Council always recognised that there ought to be some adjustment to the boundary to acknowledge the expansion westward of the Town of Swindon, and I would like to think that what is now to take place is a sensible approach to a real administrative problem. A number of local government services in your area have for some time been performed by Thamesdown Council on behalf of the North Wiltshire District Council and it is fully recognised that the additional representation of the area on Thamesdown Council in the future will allow the local people to have a greater say in how things are managed. In future you will be represented by your locally elected Members of the Thamesdown Council and I personally look -Forward to a continuation of good relations between our two neighbouring Districts. Each has something to offer the other and the administrative niceties of boundary changes do not change the people who live there. What is important is that we should all take every opportunity by voting and participating to strengthen local self government for the benefit of our respective communities whether they be in the town or the country.

The first steps have been taken with the idea of starting Art classes - Drawing & Painting. A preliminary discussion has taken place with Terry Court of Thamesdown Community Arts. This area-Toothill, Freshbrook, Westlea-will be entitled shortly, after the elections, to equal assistance in the matter of grants for such things as Community Arts, that the older areas of Swindon has enjoyed in the past. Toothill Residents Organisation We are two years old this year but incredibly we still meet residents (not necessarily new to the area) who have not heard of T.R.O. Maybe the T.R.O. is a victim of its own success!

Representations by the T.R.O. to the various Authorities have resulted in * Speed Restriction signs being erected * Improvements in Footpaths * The Provision of a Pharmacy * The Resolution of many individual residents' problems But the T.R.O. needs YOUR support and interest if we are to continue to be effective. In January the T.R.O. had a meeting to which all Dog Owners were invited to discuss the problems of stray dogs and dogs fouling the environment. Unfortunately only 3 dog owners turned up, but as a result of the discussion that took place, the Borough Council have been asked to provide an exercise area in Toothill Park. They are also being pressed to extend their dog warden service to Toothill when we become part of Thamesdown. In the meantime all dog owners are asked to study the very snsible Code of Practice which will be included in a future copy of the Link. We hope you will agree that implimentation of The Code will benefit both Dogs and Humans. Also going into the Borough will be the village of Shaw and the rural areas to the north of the new communities of Toothill, Freshbrook & Westlea. The Toothill Link/Freshbrook Focus Community Newspaper is pleased to bring residents of the area a message of Welcome from the Mayor of Thamesdown, information about the forthcoming elections and information about the candidates who are standing.

Telephone (0793) 26161 Dear Residents, On behalf of the citizens of Thamesdown, I welcome every family brought in to the newly created "Toothill Ward" of the Borough by the change of Borough boundaries. The changeover from North Wiltshire District Council is not an abrupt one, since the Borough Council has been providing numerous services for some time under agency agreements, but from the first of April 1981 the whole area comes directly within the Borough Council's jurisdiction. From that date, residents of the area are entitled to the various services provided by Thamesdown, including the concessionary bus fares scheme which benefits retirement pensioners and certain categories of disabled people. Details of some of these services are given in the enclosed information sheet. Provision of the wide range of services and facilities expected of an urban authority - the Wyvern Theatre and the Oasis Leisure Centre, for example, and the provision of amenities in the areas of housing development - inevitably demands a higher level of rates than applies in a predominantly rural area. To ease the transition, the Government has provided that, for existing hereditaments, the increase will be spread over a four-year period. Despite the current financial difficulties affecting every local authority in the country, Thamesdown Borough Council is continuing to provide and develop a wide range of public services. The Civic Offices in Euclid Street, Swindon, are more accessible to you than North Wiltshire's headquarters in Chippenham, and Thamesdown's members and officers will do their best to resolve any questions you may have at any time concerning local government services. The Council have worked amicably with their counterparts at Chippenham in the leadup to the changeover and will endeavour to give you at least as good a service in the years to come as you have received in the past. I endorse the sentiments of Councillor Hartley elsewhere in this Newsletter in urging all citizens to participate fully in local government and community affairs. The few enthusiasts who put in so much time and effort to launch local community services need the active support of the rest of the community. An important first step towards taking your part in Borough Council affairs is to cast your vote in the election of three Borough Councillors to represent the Toothill Ward, on 19th March, and I very much hope that you will do so. We know that Thamesdown Council have been blamed by many for the shortcomings we find within our area, in future the blame will really lie there. We are proud to stand as Labour candidates in the forthcoming election. We do not intend to make idle promises. We all know that this Conservative Government supported by Conservatives on Thamesâ€” down Council wish and intend to reduce every type of service wherever they can. This expanding area must have facilities the same as other areas within Thamesdown. We will, if elected, work for this. We wish to see a dynamic community, one in which everybody will be proud to live in. We do not pretend that we know all the needs of the people and to this end, like other Labour councillors, we will hold regular monthly surgeries so that you can put your point of view and bring up problems that might be effecting you or your locality. Lighting within Freshbrook and Westlea needs urgent attention as do other parts of the environment. Thamesdown has always sold certain houses but like other Labour members we do not agree that Central Government should dictate to your local council on this. We are opposed to the selling of council houses from the housing stock as this reduces housing for those most in need. We must think of the coming generation who, like many of you, will find that private sector housing immediately on marriage is beyond the purse or wallet. Many now living in private housing started in Council houses and would wish there to be such housing available to their children; if we sell the present stock off then in a few years there will be no housing for those in need. We do agree with the Council building houses for sale and the provision of Council mortgages - the Government has made this extremely difficult because of the policies that they have adopted. We wish to see everybody irrespective of their means living in good accommodation whether in the private or public sector. Central Government policy has forced rents up by ÂŁ3.80 per-week to both Thamesdown tenants and throughout the country. High interest charges will impose additional increases. Many of the complaints and problems which arise cannot be put right by Thamesdown, they are the responsibility of other organisations and the County Council. We will work with County Councillors especially on Education in the interest of all. The Conservative controlled County Council have ignored the wishes and desires of residents in respect of schooling and we will press them and the County Councillors to listen and take note. Through the Community Health Council we will try and bring pressure so that better health services are provided as this area expands. Postal and Telephone services are dealt with by another body, again we will put pressure upon them to serve the community. Our senior citizens have quite justifiably complained that they have not been entitled to concessionary fares on the buses ap others within Thamesdown are; Conservatives have always opposed these, in some parts of the country they are even taking away what is at present in being. April 1st, 1981 sees the whole of the expansion area's senior citizens getting this concession and we will oppose any cuts in this service should it come before the Council. We trust that this will give a small indication of what we aim for if elected. We ask you not to stay at horse on Election Day 1-9th March 1981 - spend a few minutes of your time and Vote for the Labour team of Geoff Madison, Mike Mann and Richard Midwinter.

Conservative Party The three Conservative Candidates standing for Toothill Ward at the election on 19th March are Andy Blunt from Freshbrook, Dave Crew from Toothill and Nick Jansen from Westlea. Andy is married, 32, and is a production coordination engineer with a local electronics firm; Dave is married, 34, has three children and is a Master Baker at a local bakery; Nick is married; 35, has a son and is a heating engineer with British Rail. All three have lived in Swindon for a considerable time; Andy for about twenty years. Each candidate is intensely interested in your well being and consider the following are just some of the things needing attention in this area: 1. Secondary schooling for our increasing population. 2. Decent roads and footpaths, adequately lit. 3. Much improved medical facilities for each area. 4. Better public transport. 5. Better community facilities including sports facilities for the youth in the area. 6. Better council house maintenance. 7. A greater prescence of a resident Police Force to improve law and order. 8. The need to control heavy traffic through residential or village areas, particularly Shaw and Washpool. 9. More help for those wishing to buy their council house; help which the Labour controlled council will not give and which your local Conservative branch has already given to many people here in this Ward on the 16th February. However, what is it that you are intensely interested in? Important amongst many things must surely be money. The Labour controlled Council spends your money like water and is continually committing itself to spending even more. Here are some facts: 1. Thamesdown's District Rate is the highest in Wiltshire and you, moving out of North Wilts, will have to catch up with it. 2. There will be a 51 increase in that rate next April wheras North Wilts rates are not going up at all. 3. The Brunel Centre is to cost the ratepayer ÂŁ1,200,000 next year, so the rates go even higher. 4. The Council's direct Labour force gets all work contracts and no competitive tenders from private contractors are accepted, so the rates go even higher. 5. This Council claims it is broke and then plans to spend ÂŁ50,000 on each of several new refuse lorries that it does not need; worse still, they plan to spend millions on Arts Centres that we cannot at present afford, so the rates even higher. If you feel these things don't matter or don't affect you because you live in a council house then consider this: 1. You will be.a citizen of the Borough. 2. You do pay rates, even in a council house. 3. The shops where you spend your money on clothes, food, televisions and holidays all pay greater rates than any individual and, so, you have to pay more for those goods and services you buy. Prices are higher. 4. Waste of money derived from rates or any source means less money to provide the amenities you and your family need. These matters are of vital concern when related to the welfare of every resident of the Toothill Ward whether he is a houseowner or not. The three Conservative candidates are well placed to listen to and understand all your views; unlike the Labour Party, whose candidates all come from Toothill Urban Village, two even from the same street. The Conservative candidates come from each one of those Urban Villages. Andy lives at 22 Chalgrove Field, Freshbrook; Dave lives at 36 Bodiam Drive, Toothill and Nick lives at 6 Moresby Close, 'Nestlea. Andy, especially, also has close links with the outlying areas such as Shaw and Washpool. The Tory team is more representative of the whole area and intend, as councillors, to make themselves available to listen to your problems by holding regular 'surgeries' within easy reach of every elector in the Ward and you will be encouraged to come to those sessions or to make direct contact with any of the three if you are unable to drop in. Remember, vote for the three Conservative candidates on March 19th and help to bring a more realistic approach into the conduct of local affairs. Your future and that of your children depends on it.

Independant TONY FREE 34; Married to Christine, Three children-Elizabeth 13, Simon 11, Poppy 4; Employed as an Electrical Engineer. Since moving to Toothill three years ago Tony has devoted a considerable amount of time to various voluntary groups in the area including Cubs and Scouts. He is also an active Committee member of the Youth Club and spends one evening per week working there as a Voluntary Part Time Leader, paying particular attention to the needs of the older members. In 1980 Tony was elected to Lydiard Tregoz Parish Council. Tony is standing as an independant candidate not only because he disagrees with so many policies of the major political parties, but because he feels his allegiance is to the residents of the Western Expansion Area. He also feels that as this area, which will be as big as Salisbury by 1990, has been built by Thamesdown with little or no regard for the essential needs of the residents - schools, shops, leisure areas and meeting places - there will be no real improvement when we are paying our Rates to that authority unless we have a loud voice with no political ties on the council. If elected Tony will pay particular attention to self-help schemes and improving leisure facilities in the area. Dear Resident, Notes of some of the changes affecting households in the transferred area West of the Borough The Borough Council provides a wide range of services and the brief details given below are intended to bring to your attention some of those which are of immediate interest particularly in the context of the transfer of responsibility from one local authority to another. Details of all services can of course, be obtained from the Civic Offices and, in some cases, from information supplied to community groups and residents' organisations. PAYMENT OF RATES Rates will be payable at the Civic Offices and full details will be sent to you with the rate demand. Current rate poundages of existing properties in the transferred area will be brought up to the level prevailing in the non-parished part of Thamesdown over a period of four years. Residents will thereafter pay the same rate poundage as residents of Swindon (which is inclusive of the Swindon Special Expenses Rate). Residents in affected properties will catch up by paying a rate increase each year of 5.4p in the pound more than any increases which may be made in the general rate affecting rate payers in Swindon until the differential of up to 21.6p in the pound has been eradicated. Properties which first become rateable on or after 1st April, 1981, will pay the prevailing Thamesdown rate poundage in full; thus in areas where development is still taking place occupiers of identical properties completed after 1st April, 1981, will pay higher rates during the period 1981 up to 1985. CONCESSIONARY FARES SCHEME After 1st April, 1981, eligible persons will be entitled to receive worth of tokens. The following persons are eligible to use tokens:Women over 60 years and men over 65 years of age who receive a full state old age pension. People suffering from a permanent disability (including blindness) which seriously impairs their ability to walk. Disabled persons' spouses who are women over 60 or men over 65 years of age. Blind persons' companions who are themselves over the qualifying ages mentioned in (a) above. Persons using the scheme for the first time will need to produce their pension book or, in the case of disabilty, a note from their doctor. Details of when and where to register and collect the first issue of tokens will be notified shortly.

Tokens may be used on any bus (either a Bristol Omnibus Company Limited or Thamesdown Transport vehicles) operating within Thamesdown (except, normally, during peak hours) and also for journeys outside the Borough provided that the journey starts or finishes within the Borough. They may also be used in connection with the Age Concern Minibus and towards the cost of rail tickets and Senior Citizen Rail Cards. THAME S DOWN TRANSPORT Service No. 1 to Freshbrook and Service No. 3 to Westlea serve the area. Thamesdown travel passes and concessionary bus fare tokens can, of course, be used on these services. Timetables are available from the Transport Office, Fleming Way, For Coaches and buses are available for private hire. Swindon. quotations, telephone Swindon 23700. MAINTENANCE OF HIGHWAYS AND SEWERS ETC. During working hours complaints regarding drainage and highways should be telephoned to Swindon 26161, Ext. 3472. After duty hours, the Council operates an emergency service (telephone Swindon 26161). The Council does not provide a service for clearing blocked drains on private property. REFUSE COLLECTIONS Domestic Refuse Collection operates on a weekly cycle and the I. existing arrangement in the Toothill/Freshbrook/Westlea areas will continue. Residents outside of this built-up area will be notified of the days of collection (if different from the existing) in due course. Dustbin Hire Scheme enables residents in the Borough to hire a 3 2. cu.ft. British Standard plastic dustbin for 90 pence per annum (payable with the rates). 3. Refuse Sacks may be purchased from Barnfield Road Depot at 75 pence for a pack of 14 sacks. Special Collections of Bulky Houshold Waste A maximum of three 4. items will be made free of charge upon application by telephone (Ext. 3558), or in writing, to the Cleansing Division. Larger quantities of bulky waste (including unwanted motor vehicles) can be collected on a chargeable basis, details of which are obtainable on application. 5. Special Collection of Medical Dressings: Where a person is receiving medical treatment at home, such as kidney dialysis patients, arrangements can be made to provide special weekly collections for the medical dressings. 6. Collections of Industrial and Commercial Waste, using special containers if required, can be undertaken by the Cleansing Division as a chargeable service, full details of which can be obtained on application. 7. Street Cleansing Services: The Cleansing Division undertake the cleansing of adopted rounds and gullies and this service will be extended to the West of the Borough as soon as possible after 1st April. Unadopted roads and gullies remain the responsibility of the developers until they become adopted by Wiltshire County Council. 8. It is now more than six years since the boundary issue between North Wiltshire District Council and the Thamesdown Borough Council was raised and the amount of new development which has taken place in the area since then has been The North Wiltshire District Council always recognised that enormous. there ought to be some adjustment to the boundary to acknowledge the expansion westward of the Town of Swindon. and I would like to think that what is now to take place is a sensible approach to a real administrative problem. A number of local government services in your area have for some time been per-Formed by Thamesdown Council on behalf of the North Wiltshire District Council and it is -Fully recognised that the additional representation of the area on Thamesdown Council in the -Future will allow the local people to have a greater say in how things are managed. In future you will be represented by your locally elected Members of the Thamesdown Council and I personally look -Forward to a continuation of good relations between our two neighbouring Districts. Each has something to offer the other and the administrative niceties of boundary changes do not change the people who live there. What is important is that we should all take every opportunity by voting and participating to strengthen local self government for the benefit of our respective communities whether they be in the town or the country.

Following a very well attended A.G.M. in January the "new look" Village Group Committee is raring to go and all set for what promises to be an exciting and eventful year. In the hope of maintaining closer contact with ALL the people who live in Freshbrook, we have in addition to the officers and club representatives on the Executive Committee a total of 13 street representatives. If things work out as we plan you should get to know your street rep quite well during the next few months. He or she will be calling at your home to give you information on what is happening in Freshbrook, to take back your comments, opinions and problems for discussion by the Committee and lastly to ask you for moneyi Subscriptions to the FVG Funds are voluntary and there is no limit (upper or lower) to the amount which you give. Of course without money the Village Group and the Community Centre will cease to function; the range of activity which can go on in Freshbrook will be directly related to the value which each and every "villager" place on community activities. Carrefour is Coming. Carrefour are coming and we who live in Toothill, Freshbrook and Westlea are the lucky ones with their Superstore oil the doorstep. At a recent meeting with members of the Toothill Residents' Organisation 9 Freshbrook Village Group and Westlea Residents' Organisation, a representative of Linlood/Carrefour explained what we are likely to see at the West Swindon Centre development. Here's a report. Firstly, Carrefour is not French, it is a British company owned by Linfood who also operate and supply other stores around tile country. For comparison's sake, our superstore will be about twice as large as Sainsbury's in Swindon, but only half the size of the Carrefour Hypermarket in Bristol - 43,000 square feet with 27 check-outs. The superstore will sell every kind of foodstuff you will need. It will have its own bakery producing 20,000 loaves of 16 different kinds per week plus a patisserie; fish will come straight from the nearest port; the vegetables will be the freshest possible and the meat will be processed in a butcher's shop in the store itself. Carrefour pride themselves on selling nearly 100 types of cheese and they recently won an award from Harrods for it. In the dry grocery sections, some 2,500 different lines will be available; 200 wines will be stocked and a range of health foods will be available. You will also be able to purchase DIY and household goods along with toys, stationery, records, clothing and shoes. The main store will look out onto an air-conditioned covered mall which will also have 13 smaller shop units a newsagent., a shoe shop, clothing shops and others still to be finalised. On an upper level will be a restaurant seating 312 people at one time, with access for the disabled via a lift, and a roof garden. Outside the superstore will be many other facilities - a bank, building society office, children's play areas, public toilets, two pubs, landscaped gardens, a petrol filling station and a garden centre. A number of craft homes are to be built to allow crafts people to make their wares in workshops, sell them and live on the premises. There will he 1,000 car parking spaces near the superstore and car/lorry drivers will be well directed to them, away from the nearby residential areas. Pedestrians will have well-lit footpaths to follow and bus routes will pass close to the store. Carrefour pricing philosophy is based on selling brand leaders and discounting everything so that there is high turnover and low profit margins. They claim to be 14% cheaper than the BBC Shopping Basket and about 5% cheaper on average than Sainsbury's or Tesco's. The superstore will be open between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday; 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday and Monday. The Garden Centre will be open on Sundays but the petrol filling station will be closed. In all, some The West Swindon Centre development is going to provide a large number of jobs, many part-time. 320 people will be employed in the superstore itself, another 100 in the smaller shop units in the mall and quite a number in the outside retail and non-retail outlets. Carrefour anticipate that most of their employees will come from Toothill, Freshbrook and Westlea. When is all this going to happen? Well, believe it or not, opening day for the superstore and a large number of the other units mentioned above is October 27th this year. Carrefour will be using The Link as their link with you, their customers. Watch this space for more information.

Toothill Youth Club The Youth Club has now got a beautiful wood floor, a strong team of leaders, more equipmon and is going from strength to strength. If you haven't tried it yet, get along there on Tuesdays - Over 14s, Thursday - Under 14s, Friday - All ages. Adults welcome too. Our next big project is to raise £6,000 to replace the roof. SO WHAT CAN THEY DO? Now that we have three Councillors to represent us some reflections by Thamesdown Councillor David Hulme.

After being first elected to represent the rapidly expanding area of Moredon and Haydon Wick on Thamesdown Borough Council, I can remember being asked repeatedly what I could do about many, many things of concern to people of the ward. Following up these issues in the first six months, my two colleagues and myself worked as hard as we could to deal with thorn to gain satisfaction for the residents. The net result was that we got to know about the issues alright - we got to know why it wasn't possible to exclude lorries and coaches from parking overnight in residential areas, why the private developers in our ward couldn't be made to provide facilities for our now estates, why it was difficult to get bus stops moved or introduced, why a community centre had not been erected in each community area of our ward - in short why many of these concerns could not be dealt with, rather than actually getting any action, and good though your Councillors in Toothill, Freshbrook and Westlea undoubtedly are, I suggest that you won't see miracles happen overnight - Council budgets take up to twelve months for new ideas and policies to be adopted. But what I do hope will happen in your ward is that your Councillors and you, as residents, both individually and through your Residents' Associations, will begin as you mean to go on, working jointly together in support of the many improvements for which your ward has been pressing and undoubtedly needs. It's not enough for you, as residents, to sit back and wait for your Councillors to act on your behalf. Get in touch with them, let them know what it is that concerns you, and make sure they have the information that will genuinely improve the quality of your life in Toothill, Westlea and Freshbrook so that they can use such information at Thamesdown Committees. To your Councillors, can I make the plea that they take steps to inform the residents of the ward as to what they are doing, and to use every opportunity (Residents' Associations Church groups, local organisations etc) to build links within the ward that will assist your community in its growth and in its fight to achieve certain facilities. If your three Councillors are prepared to work together as a team for the benefit of all in the ward with active support and involvement from Toothill, Freshbrook and Westlea residents, you will be surprised how much will be gained and in how short a time. Much has been written about the western expansion now being in Thamesdown and therefore having the right to enjoy the same facilities and services as other areas of the Borough, and that's true - but don't imagine that you'll have everything handed out on a plate to you. The other areas of the Borough have to fight to get their voice heard and to achieve and satisfy their needs. Through your team of new Councillors, I hope that your voice will soon be heard loud and clear at Thamesdown. Results followed for our ward after some months. If you care about Toothill, Freshbrook and Westlea, and participate in your ward, I'm convinced that your area will achieve that it wants also.

Thamesdown Borough Council passed a resolution calling on the Government "to refrain from the manufacture or positioning of any nuclear weapons of any kind within the boundaries of our Town." The Council should now seek to explain further to the people of the Borough how they intend to win support for the resolution. Residents in this area have the right to ask the Council to undertake a series of Town Meetings in order to get the general community behind them. The Council have also made a direct appeal to neighbouring Local Authorities to issue similar statements on behalf of the citizens they represent. As the Council states "It is not in the interests of our people to be either the initiators or magnet of a nuclear holocaust.., and such statements would clearly indicate the overwhelming desire of the people we represent, and lay the ground-work ... of a nuclear free zone in Europe." Swindon CND has already decided to write to the Council requesting a meeting to discussthe implications of the Resolution. Toothill Residents Organisation On Saturday 21st March 1981, the Post Box outside the 7 Eleven Shop was set on fire and the contents totally destroyed. Because this is the third time in 6 months that this has happened the post office are seriously consdertng removing this facility. This is one of the many facilities that the TRO has agitated for and got for the residents over the past 18 months. I could use a whole page telling you what I think of the small number of mentally retarded vandals who seem intent on turning Toothill into a pigsty in order that they may feel at hose - but that would do no good because ,you are to blame. All those residents that don't want to be involved are helping the vandals - they survive because of your apathy. Somebody must see the acts of vandalism take place, but nobody reports it - either to the Police or their street represantative. Which brings me to a final point; the TRO needs many more street representatives to cover our area. At the committee meeting held in April many of your views were aired by the street representatives and the association has written to various authorities on the following points: The bus service, or lack of it, has been raised with the council. The telephone system and need for a public box to the G.P.O. Various complaints to builders such as Barratts, Costain etc have been passed on and in fact we have seen some remarkably quick reaction from these companies although I regret to say the council and the G.P.O. are a little less forthcoming. The need for a pre-school playgroup has been helped slightly by the provision by the Rainbow room and we hope this will become a regular occurrence with dates notified in The Link. There are many aspects of life in Westlea that could be improved so do let your street representative know of anything that we could possibly help with. It is your association and it does need your co-operation. The new Chairman of the Westlea Residents Association is Steve Whipp, 48 Moresby.

My School Holiday

On Tuesday 21st I went to a pool disco and I was dancing and going down the slide it was great, after that I went to the Swindon arcade and lost all my money so I walked home. On Wednesday I did not have noting to do so I went to my best Sisters house. and on Thursday I had my hair cut. on friday I was bald and had nothing to do and it was horrible so I went in my frends house Tania de Jong and Liseanne de Jong We Were Watching television."

WESTLEA 250 SURVEY

A brief summary giving the major survey results carried out during January and February amongst Westlea residents, was presented at the Community Planning Committee of Thamesdown Council on 21st May. The summary was drawn up in advance of a full report to make Councilln' aware of the characteristics of the Westlea population, in order that the Committee may have the chance to be sympathetic to, and attempt to satisfy the communities needs. The major points outlined in the summary compared with surveys that have previously taken place in Toothill and Freshbrook and in Thamesdown are as follows 1.

A very high proportion of the population are in their twenties and thirties. Over half the total population of Westlea are between 20 and 29; this is nearly four times the proportion of the population in Thamesdown in this age group.

The low average number of people per household 2.35 compared with 2.81 in Thamesdown suggests that Westlea is a popular place for first-time buyers setting up new households ,

Over 60% of the households are new to the area,having had no previous address in Thamesdown. Over half of the heads of in-migrant households continue to work outside the Borough of Thamesdoun

The proportion of the adult population of Westlea who are either in employment or seeking work (84%) is high in comparison with both Freshbrook and Toothill. There are more households where both adult members are economically active underlined by the small proportion of housewives.

It is hoped that these basic facts will be considered by the Council in future policy decisions that need to be made on such things as service provision and community facilities for the residents of Westlea. The landscaping by Bradley Planning Services of Westlea's first major open space is now nearing completion. To be known as Withy Meads, it covers some 4 acres alongside the new watercourse and between two pedestrian underpasses just beyond The Chesters. It includes an existing copse and old hedgerows, together with additional tree and shrub planting and a children's play area. Access to Withy Meads is by footpaths from Westlea Drive and The Chesters, and by a footbridge from Ravenglass Road. As the plan indicates, the area is central to the footpath network, linking residential areas with open spaces along the Shaw Ridge and within the flood storage area. Although not all these links are finally completed, residents are encouraged to "walk the paths" this summer, and bring an increasingly "lived in" feel to Westlea. The play area includes equipment based on an original timber concept, intended for use by the under 121 s. As with any such facility, it is hoped that parents may arrange to informally supervise, especially where younger children are concerned and also in the hope of preventing vandalism. Bradley Planning Services also request that residents try to keep off the newly seeded grass areas until these have become established.

The following items are currently under discussion Freshbrook "Charles and Di Celebration Disco and BarbeQue" - July 29th As a climax to locally organised street parties which will be taking place during the day, the Village Group Committee will be running a disco and barbeque in the evening. A London disco has already been booked and this and other events will be happening in and around the Community Centre (bar applied for) from 8 p.m till 12 p.m. M riotous time could be had by all - but please don't take me literally - just have fun! It has been suggested that proceeds from this day's activity could be sent to one of the local charities connected with the International Year of Disabled People. I'd like to hear your comments and suggestions. Come and Meet your Councillors We are very fortunate in having secured the support of Borough and County Councillors for both Toothill Ward and Wroughton Parish. The Councillors have agreed to attend the monthly meetings of F.V.G. - they would like to hear your problems. If you would like to meet them, all you have to do is turn up at Committee Meetings of the Village Croup, in the Community Centre on the second Wednesday in each month commencing at 730 p.m. Next meeting, Wednesday 10th June 1981. For the Childrens' Sake Freshbrook has declared war on irresponsible dog owners who allow their pets to foul footpaths and play areas within the village. Thamesdown Borough Council are seeking prosecutions against owners who disregard the byelaws concerned with the exercising of dogs. For the sake of the health of our children Freshbrook residents have been asked to support the Count:l's efforts to ensure that dogs are not exercised in inappropriate places. Wroughton Parish Politically speaking Freshbrook is a divided community. Half of it falls in Toothill Ward and half of it lies in the Parish of Wroughton There has been some confusion caused by this in the past and it has been agreed that F.V.G. should make representation to the Boundaries Commission and to the Church Commissioners to urge that the views of Freshbrook residents be taken into account during discussions concerning the moving of the boundary.. Before I write I would like to hear your views - particulary if you would prefer that the boundary remains where it is. I will not write until after the next Committee Meeting on June 10th. Hire Charges Freshbrook Community Centre's Management Committee is pleased to announce that, owing to the healthy state of its booking list, from 1st .June 1981, the Hire Charge for the Community Centre will be reduced to a flat rate of ÂŁ1.00 per hour for Freshbrook residents and groups. Charges for external private functions will remain at the levels fixed previously.

Toothill Mini Marathon May I thank everyone who participated in the Toothill Mini-Marathon on Sunday 14th June. It was a fun-event which brought the community together and the money raised will go to a very worthy cause - Brimble Hill School for handicapped pupils. Special thanks go to I. Mrs. S. Maddocks Chairman of the School Governors who not only was the official starter but also she sportingly joined the runners and was the third lady home. 2. Mr. Chris I4amara of Swindon Town Football Club who gave up a Sunday morning to present the awards. Mr. Scott McDonald who greatly assisted in the organisation and drummed up support. L. Mr. Dave Bartlett from the Toot and Whistle who together with some of his 'regulars' entered into the spirit of the thing by running in fancy dress. If you have enjoyed it please let us know and perhaps we can do something similar next year. Thank you all - participants and helpers for making what I hope is only our first MiniMarathon, a great success.

"Care For Your DOD' Campaign

The Toothill Residents Organisation has been very concerned about Dogs which are not looked after and cause a nuisance to .other residents. It welcomes Thamesdown Council's inttiative in launching a 'Care for your Dog Campaign." Thamesdwon has a dog population of around 12,000, though only 7,600 dog licences were issued last year. The council is not after licence-dodgers, nor is it anti-dogs. Uncontrollea dogs, however DO result in various social problems. The council wants people to think twice before buying a dog and also accept the responsibilities of ownership should they get one. Uncontoiled dogs cause pollution-fouling and noise-and Disease. Strays-including dogs simply turned out daily by ownersare another problem.

Pollution During 1978-79, the public health department acted on 59 pollution complaints involving dogs-29 about incessantly barking animals, the rest of fouling. That's more than one a week. And talking about fouling, its estimated that Thamesdown's dogs' annually produce 500 tons of excrementmuch of it on footpaths, verges, parks and play areas. While it is quite possible to train a dog to perform in its own garden, everyone, council included, accepts that accidents sometimes happen. But the council believes that most people object to indiscriminate fouling.

The fouling of footwayu and verges under 3 metres wide is illegal under a local by-law and the council is quite prepared to prosecute offenders, who can be fined up to ÂŁ50 if convicted. Its your money that has to be used to clear excrement. If you object to this, then contact the public health department if you see anyone deliberately permitti'ng fouling. The consequences are possibly more anti-social than your action in reporting it.

Strays Apart from genuine strays-unowned animals-large numbers of dogs are regularly turned out daily by owners. For example, bitches in season will draw dogs from literally miles around. In packs, dogs are a big nuisance and, at worst, are a genuine physical danger, especially to children and road users.

The council employs two dog wardens. Far from being just dog-catchers, the wardens are experts in canine behaviour and can give advice on strays or other dog problems. They can be contacted via tne council's Cleansing Division at Barnfield Road. Like fouling, the problems of strays would disappear given 100% responsible dog ownership. The coucil has arranged exhibitions as part of the 'Care for your Dog' Campaign in various parts of the borough. The Toothill Residents Organisation is arranging for it to visit Toothill. If you're a dog owner or if you're thinking of buying a dog then please visit the exhibition. And please, follow these 12 rules with your dog.

1. Train it in elementary obedience so that it is under control at all times. 2. Feed it at regular times and do not give tit-bits between meals. 3. Feed it from its own dishes and keep them apart from those of the human family. 4. Keep It on a lead anywhere near a road, or where there are farm animals 5. Do not allow it to foul buildings, pavements, lawns and gardens; or places where children play. 6. Do not allow it to be noisy to the disturbance of your neighbours. 7. Provide it with its own bed. 8. Never take it into a food shop. 9. Keep it cleaned and regularly groomed. 10. Register it as a patient and yourself as a client with a vet. Don't wait for an emergency. 11. If you do not wish it to have puppies, get advice from your vat. 12. fake proper arrangements for its care when you go on holiday.

A correspondent last month argued that the Link should avoid controversial issues, and felt that LND should be debated nationally, rather than in a paper which is meant to build community spirit. Some time ago I wrote urging readers to get involved in their community — and that wasn't universally popular either. We would like to know, before we go and see the Transport Companies what requirements you have, i.e. .what time you need a bus and what route it should run. We are also trying to get shelters provided at main stops. A site has been selected by the GPO for a public telephone and planning permission has been sought. There will alsa be public telephones on the Carrefour site. The GPO have assigned two gangs to Westlea and they confidently expect to install 70-80 private telephones per week over the next few weeks. For the people in Birdcombe; having persuaded Barratts to remove one pile of bricks, they have replaced it with another. We have asked for them to be removed as soon as possible. Street lighting should be rapidly improved as we have provided the electricity board with a list of all non-operative lights. They have said that although they will try to connect them their first priority is connecting new homes - they are at least now aware of the situation. The Welcome Booklets should now be reaching all new arrivals but may we extend a warm welcome to all new residents of Westlea. For the residents of The Chesters we are sending a letter to the council asking for a road name to be erected so that you can he found more easily. We welcomed to our meeting our new councillors and a number of salient points were raised for them to take back to the Borough and County Councils. One was the change in specification of the type of houses being built especially the reduction in the number of 3 and 4 bed houses with a corresponding increase in 2 bedroomed. It was felt by many that this would change the nature of the community and completely change the requirements for future development in terms of schooling, especially secondary schools, and other social services. Councillors' attention was also drawn to the fact that a village hell should be built as soon as possible for Hie community as it stands now and not as envisaged in 5 or 10 years time. The poor medical facilities for Westlea were pointed out and the Councillors promised to bring pressure on the Authorities for this situation to be remedied. It was pointed out that the fact that Westlea was private development in no way detracted from the fact that residents required the same medical services and social facilities as people in the mixed council and private areas. There is, for example, no reason why the council should pass plans for private developments where there are no play areas for children allocated when they insisted on play areas when applications were made on council controlled schemes. The committee would point out to the developers of this area that if this situation persists then they will find objections to future plans being raised which will delay their rate of development. In this the local councillors agreed and have promised to keep this committee informed of all future applications, and consult with us on than. As many of you are aware, Renault have received outline planning permission to build a factory in Westlea and we will be seeking a meeting with them in the near future to discuss what sort of development they envisage so that it will not be an eyesore to what should be a pleasant community to live and work in. This summer the Octobus comes to Toothill. Its a double docker bus packed full of exciting things to make the summer holidays go with a bang - sports and games equipment and arts and craft materials. Three workers on board will help to organize games and interesting activities for Westlea children. "Well,back in the days when the Western Area was all fields,a scheme was drawn up for the new housing development.This encompassed Toothill Parin,but the planners wisely thought the Farmhouse would make an ideal community building,so when the houses were built the Farrnhouse,on a two acre site,were left intact.There were stables and barns mnd it was not !on,ong before the house was converted and made available for public use. Now the Council have planned for a Community Centre by Toothill Church,so it was hoped that a group of residents would form to use the Farm for the minority interests that have different needs,i.e. pottery, photography,modelling,woodwork and so on." "Certainly,especially if you could start a canoe club.The Steering Committee,who all live on Westlea,Freshbrook or Toothill, hrve plans to extend the existing Farmhcuse facilities by adding two squash ccurts,a lounge and the hobby rooms.Things hve gone well,amd we now have full p:anning approval,and this within 12 mintht of forming."

Playgroup Garden There is an almost enclosed garden behind the farmhouse which is perfect for an outside play space for the playgroup. The Fete the playgroup held recently has raised some money to help towards putting the area into order so that Social Services will register the garden as being suitable for Under 5 1 s. In the near future, the area will be totally enclosed with the help of a temporary fence until the hedging grows. A hard surface 'patio' will be laid and play equipment will be purchased. Roll on the summer.

TidinUp_at the Farm

Money For a long time, there was much debate on the outbuildings at Toothill Farm. Could they be renovated and used, or were they 'past it'? A decision was reluctantly made a year ago by the Thamesdown Borough Council that two buildings were really beyond hope. The old stables and the garage barn were felt to be too dangerous to leave standing - they were very attractive to children who loved making dens in them, and we were worried about the children's safety. Even though it was sad to see these buildings being demonlished, it has given an opportunity to 'tidy up' the Farm landscape. In consultation with the Farm Steering Comthittee, a landscape plan is being drawn up and monies have been found to implement a very basic design scheme. The aim is to get the groundwork right so that the Farm Steering Committee can take the landscaping forward to an ideal state later. So watch out for changes down at the Farm. The development at the Farm is going to cost a lot of money in anybody's terms. So, we thought it important to do the thing right. To that end, the Community Trust granted us £500 to pay for a feasability study to be undertaken by a professional fundraiser. Adrian Tait, who lives in Hungerford, and has worked with s'eral projects in Swinaon, has been working hard on our behalf, and he should have a report for us by July, which will give us a good indication of our chances of success.

Special mention should be made of Elwyn Barnett and Eric Pyle who have put many hours of voluntary work into laying the new wood floor and also of Thamesdown Electrical Services who rewired the place for U5. Not to forget the Community Services Officers and those who levelled the floor. Perhaps most important of all, Michell Mills and the others who, as Youth Club workers, have spent many hours in near freezing conditions in order to turn the cowstalls into a proper club, and the people who make the club - the youth of our area. But we've not finished the list of works is:-

Youth Club

The members and friends of the Youth Club will be well aware that there has been a great improvement in the Youth Club huildin' over the last year. With the help of Thamesdown Borough Council, Hambro Life and the people of Toothill, the cowstalls have stopped being just cowstalls, and we now have a very smart pine floor, proper electrics and a much more draught free space. Thanks are due to all those people who have helped put new doorways in, brick up the gaps and repair the place generally.

So we're busy raising money. An appeal to businesses has brought in £80 so far - the 100 Club is going strong, and applications are in to the County Council and Hambro Life. Youth Club Members took part in a sponsored walk organised by the Wootton Bassett Lions on that beautiful sunny Sunday, 14th June - they raised £90 and several sunburnt faces. Other events are planned - if you don't want to miss this exciting time - come and help us. We're open Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings. DAVID ATTWOOD CHAIRMAN

Back in April, in Link 179 we told you that "Carrefour is Coming" and you can see our slogan on advertisements around Swindon confirming it. In fact Carrefour is only 3 or 4 weeks away (depending on when you receive this Link). October 27th is the big day when the town centre comes to us9 rather than us having to go all the way into Swindon to do the weekly big shop. Carrefour is a major addition to the facilities that the western expansion is slowly getting. With the superstore will come 13 smaller shops (newsagents, pharmacy, shoe and clothes shops etc.) a garden centre, a pub, a petrol station and a restaurant. Inside the superstore you will be able to buy nearly everything you need by way of food and household goods, all at very competitive prices. The West Swindon Centre puts the expansion area on the map? in a big way. People outside Toothill, Freshbrook and Westlea see the area as one huge building site with no facilities and nothing to do. "You don 1 t live there do you?" is the kind of comment often heard. The local press have been quite good at promoting a poor image also.

Now we can say, "Nobody else in Swindon has a superstore on their front doorstep." Hopefully this fact will make the area more desirable and will start to destroy the bad images that people outside have in their minds about us0 Our community is a thriving place with new activities and organisations springing up all the time. Its certainly not perfect though. The addition of the superstore should go a long way to making life even better for those who live here already and for the many coming in the future.

COMPLAINTS DEPT.:

Carrefour were recently voted the most community minded retail organisation in the U.K. by a trade magazine. They are willing to respond to suggestions and complaints and are interested in improving their service to customers where possible. Two meetings have been held with representatives of the Toothill Residents Organisation, Freshbrook Village Group and the Westlea Residents Association where plans for the superstore were explained and questions answered. Carrefour would now like to see an independant organisation to represent the needs of the consumer - to take up complaints and make suggestions on how to improve the service provided. by M. J. Stone of Swindon Museum Little was known of the early history of that part of the Western Development known as Toothill prior to 1973 when the development layouts were released. Members of the Museum and Swindon Archaeological Society checked old records and walked most of the area searching for any signs of past human occupation. But owing to extensive grass cover, little was observed, apart from the old village of Mannington, close to Toothill Farm. Excavation and fieldwork during the development resulted in a mass of new information which is still being looked at. From the plotting of the finds and examination of documents, it is possible to sketch in the history of Toothill for the first time. The earliest finds consist of flint cores and tools, most of which were collected from the top of Toot Hill and close to the railway line. Examination of the flints suggests that they may belong to the mesolithic period (c.1D,000 to c.3,500 B.C.) when people of a nomadic nature may well have camped on the hillside. Nothing further is known until the late Iron Age period, when a small pit of unknown nature was built near the top of Toot Hill. Evidence of the Roman-British period is common on the slopes of Toot Hill. Just below Toot Hill, firm evidence of pottery kilns, buildings, pits and ditches were observed during earth movements. Larger earth slips close by were proved to be clay quarries from which the potters obtained their clay. Standing above thiE. was a substantial stone and timber building linked to a road. On the evidence of the coin and pottery, it would seem that the pottery industry commenced in the late second century A.D. and ran through into the fourth century P.D. During the ninth or tenth century .D., the small village of Mannington grew up. It is first mentioned in 901 when in was called 'MEHPNDUN', meaning 'a hill or high ground' which fits the topography well. Observations on the ground indicated about twenty house platforms where the houses onus stood, and the village centre with roads running out into the fields. Two of the houses were excavated and produced large amounts of twelfth/thirteenth century pottery, also iron and bronze objects, one of which when cleaned has been identified as the seal matrix of thc standard of 'Thomas second son of RADVLFUSI, the Earl of Hereford who once owned the land. The village was possibly abandoned in the sixteenth century but later in 1773 a few houses were still lived in. The farm is all that remains of the village prior to the modern build ing of Toothill. Research is still going on and will be published some time in 1982. The best of thE finds will be put on display in Swindon Museum.

With so many supermarket chains advertising "We're the cheapest", "Me too","Me too", "Me too", you may conclude that a great deal of baloney is talked on this subject. So Carrefour make no claims on this score. Inescapably, however, the three national, independent, impartial and authoritative surveys which have included Carrefour in their samples, have all presumed to say that Carrefour is the cheapest food store in the country. But still, Carrefour make no claim - and only grudgingly admit that they may have been right, at that time! Carrefour policy, however, is to avoid the "deep-pricecutting", "loss-leader" concepts of merchandising and to discount all lines*, all brands, all sizes, all the time - more or less uniformly. This means you have the freedom to choose any brand, in any size that suits you - and still enjoy a good price. For people who appreciate that savings are to be made on things other than

the obvious ones like sugar, tea, butter and instant coffee - and that it is the cost of the total shopping basket, including things like pickles, sauces, recipe ingredients, cleaning materials, toiletry items and DIY articles, that counts - it does make for a more relaxed type of shopping. It will help you, too, should you want to compare prices, to pick on some of the less predictable, more unusual items that you enjoy and/or need.

That is what the Chairman of the Birmingham Federation of Disabled Persons' Associations was kind enough to say at the opening of Carrefour/Birmingham. On local advice, we've gone one better at Carrefour! Swindon. Toilet, telephone, parking, no steps, an extra-wide checkout, are some of the fourteen features. There's a special lift for you, too, up to the restaurant. Guide dogs will be permitted around the shop or, often better, they can be left for a snooze at the Information Desk. Look for the signs or always feel free to ask. -

Two years ago I organised an Arts and Crafts, weekend specially designed for people who have often thought that it would be nice to try but have never got round to actually doing any arts and crafts (since school,, Sadly only six people turned up and the week end had to be cancelled for lack of support, The West Swindon population has doubled since then and I am hoping to organise a similar event. It will be spread over all day Saturday and Sun.day morning and there will be a number of different activities to try out pottery , sketching, fabric printing and dyeing and anything else there is a demand for. Above, you will see details of an event which, together with the Halloween Dance and Fancy Dress evening, will, I hone, nrovide us with the opportunity to get together again, to renew our vigour and nrepare us for the months ahead. I have spoken of renewing old acquaintances; but let me not forget that there are many of you who have only just moved to Freshbrook. May I take this opnortunitv of offering you a very warm welcome and of invitinc you to come and join Freshbrook Village Group in its work for the community. CONSUMER GROUP On Tuesday 2nd November at the Community Room Freshbrook School, seven West Swindon residents (including Roger Ogle) plus Moyra Haynes of the Oxford Consumer Group met to discuss the long awaited arrival of the Carrefour Development. A lively discussion took place with everyone recounting stories of their initial shopping experiences at the new West Swindon Centre. Comments both good and bad emerged on the subjects ranging from signposting fo the car parks to the state of the loos. From there the party moved down to Carrefour and after a swift look round, the group met Mr. Peter Hartland, the Store Director. During the following 11 hours various points of praise and crticism were put to Mr. Hartland who answered questions fairly-if not always with the answers the group wanted. On the whole Carrefour seem keen to please the local community, which is, after all in their interests as well. Under the watchful eye of the West Swindon Consumer Group they have every chance of succeetiing. Ve have a school called Freshbrook School. We had our official opening on November 5th. We Azill remember that day because it is on Guy Fawkes Night. First of all class 1 wer in and said 'this is class one." Then class 2 went in and said "this is class 2". Class 3 went in and said 'this is class 3." PARENTS K.O. COUNTY At a Public Meeting held at the Freshbrook Community Centre on December 2nd, those present had several questions to ask Wilts. County Council about the implications of its new proposals for secondary schools in and around Swindon. These questions cover such areas as where will our children go to school; whether parents will have to pay for travel and other things at a Further Education College; will there be a secondary school for those moving to the new expansion north of Shaw over the next 12 years; when the school to cover Toothill, Freshbrook a Westlea will be ready to open; and whether real steps cannot be taken to supervise the buses meanwhile. The meeting then voted unanimously that it preffered the proposalto maintain some 11-18 schools in Swindon, rather than sending all 6th formers to two Further Education Collges.

Avoiding the crush But perhaps the most useful tip I can give is to remind you that Carrefour is always open late, every night, from Tuesday to Saturday Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays until 8.00 p.m.; Fridays until 9.00 p.m., and Saturdays until 7.00 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays are still fairly quiet, so for a family shopping trip, a Tuesday or a Wednesday evening - maybe including a visit for the children to see Father Christmas in the grotto - will be the best time to choose. Saturday 19th Decmber liam-Spm Christmas Art/Drama Workshop for children aged 5-12 in the Community Room, Freshbrook School. Bring a packed Lunch, drinks provided. We will be producing a Nativity Play (plus the props and costumes) and learning a carol to perform the following day in our Carol Service at 10.30am Sunday 20th December in the Freshbrook Community Centre. TAKE THE FOOTPATH TO CARREFOUR Walking-to Carrefour from Toothill sure is a risky business. Everytime you walk down Pevensey Way and around Toothill roundabout you take the risk of getting yourself killed. There is in fact a safe route. Follow the dotted lines on the map make for Edington Close. At the end of Edington you will find a footpath which leads under the main road and into the front door of Carrefour. It takes a little longer if you are coming from Toothill, but you are more than likely to get there in one piece!!

The Toothill Farm Steering Committee who have developed plans to expand the use of Toothill Farm by including some hobby rooms, a small lounge and two squash courts have had their first financial success. D.M. S (Readers Digest) of Blagrove Industrial Estate have committed themselves to covenanting £1,000 a year for five years to the Farm Project. This means the Farm Steering Committee will he able to claim the tax that DMS has already paid on this money; so thE covenant is worth not £5.000, but £7,142 over fire years. Whats more, Mr. Hasant, Managing Director of DMS has also agreed to be Chairman of a Finance Advisory Group which will help us raise £100,000we need from Industry. Thank you DMS for your help the first contribution is always the most difficult to get; and welcome on board the Farm Project. -

TUESDAY TIME OUT

PLAYGROUP THRIFT SHOP The Toothill Farm Playgroup have set up a Thrift Shop where good quality childrens clothes are sold at very reasonable prices. This is open at the Farm playgroup on Monday 4 Friday mornings The playgroup has been having a busy time putting on a Christmas concert for par ert s and also the Good Companions pensioner group. The playgroup waiting list is quite short at present, so if you want to put your child's name down for playgroup please conit the supervisor Chris Morris during a session which are on Monday mornings, Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday and Thursday all day a Friday mornings

The Time-Out Parent 4 Toddler group is alive and well at the Farm between 10 and 11.30am on Tuesdays. Newcomers are very welcome. The group is also quite good at natural expansion! Congratulations to Gill on the birth of Mathew to Christine -to Yvonne on the birth of James on the birth of Adam and there's 2 more soon!! -

****TOOTH ILL YOUTH CLUB****

Sadly we've Just to bring you up to date , said good-bye to our youth leader, Michelle Mills. Although she is still on the Management Committee she will be missed at the youth club Thank you Michelle for all you have done. so until sometime in the New Year Until we replace her, we're a bit short of youth leaders THE CLUB WILL BE CLOSED ON THURSDAY EVENINGS BUT UNDER 14s ARE WELCOME FRIDAYS The Christmas closing is nearly upon us. The club will be closed on Friday 25th and will reopen on Tuesday 5th January. CHANGE IN MEMBERSHIP Last year we asked people who wanted to be member to pay SOp per year and then lOp per evening instead of 20p. As renewal time is coming up on 1st January, a new system has been agreed of paying 20p for each of the first 5 times you come and then you will get a membership card and only pay 10p per evening thereafter. FINALLY, due to uur secretary getting promotion at work and having to move to Portsmouth we have a Vacancy if you are interested in becoming the Secretary of Toothill Youth Club, please would you contact one of the people below.
