precedents _ performing arts center - mecanoo
Before developing the arts centre further, I wanted to take a step back and do some research on curved structures that successfully utilize their unique form. The first example I researched was the performing arts centre by Mecanoo. This facility features a roof that curves so dramatically on one side that it becomes seating for outdoor theatre. I love this and think something like this could be incorporated into my design. In the past I have divided spaces up very linearly rather than being creative with abnormal ideas. My design should include features that could only belong to this building and area. I’ll do this by highlighting the form throughout the spaces and celebrating the surrounding environment.
precedents _ rolex center - sanaa
The next precedent I studied was the Rolex Centre by Japanese architects at SANAA. This long undulating structure contains ramps and little steps to navigate up and down its slopes. I want to adapt this into my design and create an interesting way to make your way through the spaces. I will experiment with various outcomes and how they affect the overall design. Another element of this building is that it is mostly an open plan. I will approach my structure in the same fashion and keep internal walls to a minimum so the form can be appreciated in full.
structure _ floor revision
structure _ sloped seating Taking inspiration from the precedents discovered this week, I began experimenting with various contour patterns to utilize the structure’s unique form as seating. Using the direction and other parameters I was able to achieve many results with different pros and cons. In conclusion, I want the seating to highlight the form and follow its ondulating shape. The final decision will be whether to provide entire floors throughout the bowl section of the structure, or tier the space with contoured seating. Depending on requirements, the space may be better utilized with interesting seating rather than simply splicing horizontal planes through the form.
structure _ stair and ramp concept When I began designing how occupants would traverse the levels within the art center I knew that it needed to be a feature. Therefore I began designing a large grand staircase that would catch your eye as soon as you entered the building. I came up with 2 initial concepts but quickly ran into a problem when incorporating them into my project. As seen in figures 4-7, due to the very abstract shape, levels throughout the building are displaced. This means that the floors aren’t directly above each other and a typical staircase wouldnt function correctly. This also became a problem when designing floor plans in 2D as plans would be inaccurate. Because of these challenges, I began thinking of a better concept that would also relate to the organic free flowing form of the structure. In result I created a ramp structure that runs around the perimeter of each floor like a ribbon. This suited the project much better than my previous staircases and also introduced a great wayfinding feature.
