TheLaboratoryTheaterwillstage WilliamShakespeare’sJuliusCaesar.

Knownforpushingboundariesand championingdaring,cutting-edgetheater,TheLaboratoryTheaterofFloridais returningtoitsrootswithaprovocative, modernreimaginingofWilliam Shakespeare’sJuliusCaesar,opening March27.

Inthisvisceralstaging,co-directors AlexDaggandNykkieRizleyswapthe marblepillarsofRomefortheshadows ofadingyparkinglot.Thisisaworldof asphaltandadrenaline,wherethehighmindedrhetoricoftheSenateisreplaced bythedangerouscodesofthestreet.

Intheshadowsofaneglectedparking lot,Caesaristheundisputedlaw.Butas influencegrows,afactionofhisown crewbeginstofeeltheweightofhis shadow.LedbyaconflictedBrutusand thecalculatingCassius,thegroupplots todismantlethehierarchytheyhelped build.Inthisworldofasphaltandadrenaline,loyaltyistheonlycurrency,and betrayalisadeathsentence.

AccordingtodirectorsDaggand Rizley,“Whenwebeganthisprocess, ourprimaryobjectivewastotakeaclassicplay,onesooftendefinedbyitsdirect parallelstothemodernpoliticalclimate, andpresentitinawaythatallowsthe audiencetolookpastthoseobvious comparisons.Wewantedtorefocusthe lensonthetimelessthemes:power, ambition,honor,betrayal,andtheterrifyingspeedwithwhichsocialorderdecays oncethemobmentalityhastakenhold.”
