Limits at BAM, NY The celebrated contemporary circus performance Limits plays at BAM, Brooklyn Academy of Music in New York from June 7 to 10, 2017. The show by Cirkus Cirkör has been acclaimed for its political content, beautiful expressions and high-quality circus art. Director Tilde Björfors’s creation is about both mental and physical boundaries, both aimed at the European refugee disaster and the circus artists’ personal limits in terms of risk, pain and bodily constraints. It praises those who cross borders and ask cirququestions about walls versus humanity. Contemporary circus, or nouveau cirque (it originated in French-speaking countries), is a fairly new genre of performing art. Although based on traditional circus skills, this type of circus does not use animals and tends to focus more on the overall aesthetic impact. The telling of a story is important, and along with a narrative, characters develop and come into the limelight. The nouveau cirque movement began in the 1970s, and today the most famous example is Cirque du Soleil. Swedish nouveau cirque Cirkus Cirkör was founded by Tilde Björfors in 1995 and is today an organization that tours extensively, performs, holds events and has its own educational system. Cirkus Cirkör has previously performed at BAM with the performances Inside Out (2009) and Wear it like a crown (2012). Until August 13, the Denver Museum of Nature & Science (dmns.org) is taking a turn hosting the largest collection of Viking artifacts to visit North America. Learn folk dancing at Sweden in the Park – a Nordic folk dance class on Sunday, June 18. A one hour-dance class is followed by a social dance, led by Linda Brooks and Ross Schipper of Scandia DC, a Scandinavian Folk Dance Group serving the metro DC area. They teach a large variety of folk dances to the accompaniment of fiddlers Andrea Hoag and Loretta Kelley. Beginners are welcome and partners aren’t required. The Vikings’ Announcement

We thought it might be the announcement that we could see the Vikings sail the eastern seaboard this summer, but it’s the next best thing: assurance that we can step aboard the world’s largest Viking “Great Ship” and tour it. The crew of the Draken Harald Hårfagre announced on May 31 that it will host guided tours June 30-September 4 of the Draken at Mystic Seaport in Connecticut, where the replica longship is docked until next spring, which is when the crew plans a tour up and down the U.S. East Coast. A year ago, the authentically reconstructed Viking longship was sailing from Norway to North America to explore and relive one of the most mythological sea voyages, the first transatlantic crossing and the Viking discovery of the New World more than 1,000 years ago. Summer Jazz at ASF

Jazz returns to Scandinavia House, 58 Park Avenue, NY on June 29 with Klabbes Bank, a Swedish six-piece ensemble led keyboardist Klas-Henrik Hörngren. Founded in 2002 as a jazz band, the group’s sound has evolved into a blissful mix of rock, pop, electronica, jazz and free improvisational music. This is one of six summer Thursday evening performances from some of Scandinavia’s most talented young musicians, composers, and singers. Gothenburg’s Little Dragon is a band of catchy electro-pop and lush R&B music that has made them even more popular in the U.S. than in Sweden. Using synths and chimes, textural electronic and analog combinations, the foursome is comprised of singer Yukimi Nagano, bassist Fredrik Kallgren Wallin, keyboardist Hakan Wirenstrand, and drummer Erik Bodin, who met as teenagers in mid-’90s and began recording in 2007. Their fifth album, Season High was released on April 14, and they are back in the U.S. to promote it. Little Dragon plays the Newport Music Hall in Columbus, OH on May 2, the Majestic Theatre in Detroit on May 3; they’re in Atlanta on May 5 and 6, then they’re back on the west coast in July. august 8 in sweden: crayfish Sweden is known for its various seafood specialties, especially in the late summer when certain crustaceans are mature and fresh. There are three main headliners in August: crayfish (kräftor), fermented herring (surströmming) and eel (ål). The crayfish season begins two weeks ahead of surströmming season and the “dark days of eel” (ålamörkret), though the crayfish season is generally shorter and more widely enjoyed. In the U.S., it’s the crayfish that take center stage (although some sturdy Swedes make sure to pay homage in their own way to the pungent surströmming and difficult-to-find ål), with parties and festivities that give any celebration in Sweden a run for its money. We certainly try our best to throw an authentic kräftshiva in Swedish America! At one time, the lakes of Sweden teemed with the black gold that is crayfish. It was exported to the ritzy restaurants of Paris, London and Berlin, but over-fishing. It wasn’t until 1994 that a ban on fishing for crayfish in Swedish lakes during certain times of the year was lifted; the last day of the ban had been August 7, which made August 8 the first day to start eating them — and the date stuck. Swedes can also import crayfish from other countries, which means it can be eaten year-round, but tradition often gets the better of us and having a ritual is appealing, so most Swedes nowadays celebrate the crayfish premiere on August 8 every year, the date they can finally give in to their cravings and celebrate — with a crayfish party.
