The great waterway The Göta Canal, the great waterway of the north, is a popular tourist attraction in any season, luring people on snowshoes or cross country skiis, in kayaks or canoes, on bike or foot. The canal is dotted with charming towns, restaurants and museums, and even castles and a convent. Most famously, cruising the canal on an historic boat offers an experience reminiscent of the 19th century and similar in ambience, some say, to travel on Europe’s famed Orient Express. We got to see it for ourselves. /P15 Gender equality in Sweden 2018 / p5 Ban on begging in a municipality in southern Sweden / p5 A popular dessert that your grandmother used to make / p25 Page 25

Three trips in one

issue. A pilgrimage, a romantic trip on water and a trip down memory lane, all of them in or leading to ... Sweden. Travel in Sweden. That’s a topic many readers say they enjoy - and what they’d like to read more of. Whether we go into the new year with resolutions to make headway into family history, travel abroad or just read about it, we know Sweden offers us so much. With a nod to its 100,000 lakes and beautiful countryside, fresh food and family history, we begin 2019 with three “trips” in this issue. / P10, 12, 15
