Swedish enclave in NY
I grew up in the “Swedish enclave� of western New York. Some such enclaves were completely populated by immigrants from Scandinavia, but here my family settled in already established towns of Anglo-Americans. The story goes that the first Swedes travelled west along the Erie Canal as far as Buffalo, around 1850. They had no money for steamboat passage in the Great Lakes to the Swedish enclaves further west in Chicago and Minnesota, so they decided to walk. The people were pretty tired when they got to Chautauqua County, the westernmost county in New York state, and the beautiful lakes, forests and rolling hills reminded them so much of home that they decided to stay. / p8
