We know the bonds between Sweden and America are strong. And they continue to be so, decades after the biggest wave of our forefathers settled in the United States. We can all cite examples of interest, culture and initiatives that have linked our people and our countries over the years. And every year since 1960, the Vasa Order of America selects a prominent American (or Canadian) citizen of Swedish heritage to be recognized as Swedish-American of the Year (SAY). This year, the winner is Nils Lofgren, recording artist, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist with many albums and possibly best known for his role as the lead guitarist in Bruce Vasa Star / Page 23 Springsteen’s E Street Band. Riding a wave of continued underground popularity following their earlier appearance on “The Colbert Report,” swingin’ Swedish hip-hop group Movits! returns to American soil this month for a 6-show tour. Here’s an interview with the three members of Movits! during their first U.S. tour. The back story is just too fun not to repeat. The Luleå-based trio, known worldwide for its irresistible amalgam of acoustic hip-hop, jazz and Benny Goodman-style swing, was in Uppsala in May 2009 when the band members heard they were being hyped on some U.S. blogs. Their debut album, Äppleknyckarjazz (“Apple-Swiper Jazz”), released in November 2008, spawned two engaging music videos (directed by Kalix-born Axel Söderlund).
