I traveled from San Francisco to Seattle recently retracing the initial portion of a trip my paternal grandparents took by railroad in 1908. Farfar and Farmor went to Portland, Tacoma, Seattle and Spokane, then on to Rock Island, Chicago, Minneapolis, and ultimately to Niagara Falls and New York — visiting Swedes at every stop. They then took a boat to visit Sweden after 20 years in San Francisco. Alexander Olsson (Farfar) wrote in his book, På Turistfärd (1909), about his entire trip. It’s in Swedish, and thanks to my Swedish cousin, Karin Elvö, I was able to understand it more clearly. My wife Astrid and I wanted to see what might have changed since Farfar travelled the rails. Midsummer Treats
In anticipation of our Midsummer picnic planning, we promised to include some favorite new recipes in this issue. These delicious summertime foods really do hit the mark – starting with Gunilla Blixt’s idea for sliders on the grill, a particularly great plan for a Midsummer cook-out because it’s easy to create a “slider bar” with many small patties (like Stockholm chef Anders Tegner has here) and a huge variety of tasty — and healthy — fixins to go with them. Also in anticipation of the best Midsummer ever, we’ve included a favorite classic to make with the fruity staple of Midsummer: strawberries.
