Safer for sure when the snus can is used like this—as the center piece for a two-man tug-of-war called snusdrag, a typical Swedish game from the 19th century, a tug-of-war over a metal snuffbox.

An old tradition makes a comeback You may have seen examples of it in your Swedish grandmother’s kitchen, but you didn’t even know it. This lovely, versatile needlecraft can beautify hand towels, aprons, pillowcases and so much more. At least that’s what the immigrants did when they brought this fiber arts technique from the old country to America. It’s never really disappeared, but the technique has been hanging by a thread below the radar of Swedish America. Fortunately, all that’s needed is the cloth, a tapestry needle and just about any kind of colored thread or floss. An effort from a Swedish company to change product-labeling procedures in the United States could have a major impact on how the FDA classifies non-cigarette tobacco products. Stockholm-based Swedish Match AB, a leading manufacturer of moist, smokeless tobacco products called “snus,” applied to the U.S Food and Drug Administration to change the warning labels on 10 of its snus products. Currently, the FDA classifies all tobacco products, including smokeless tobacco, as causing cancer. Swedish Match, citing toxicological and social studies conducted in Sweden, claims it has the science to prove its products are far less harmful to human health and should have labels on its products that better reflect its products’
