Stand on the corner of Broadway and 42nd, the old legend goes, and you’ll eventually meet everyone you’ve ever known. Here at the crossroads of the world and a couple of blocks north you’ll find yet another kind of crossroads, a Valhalla of sorts for Viking afficionados, as you enter the Discovery Museum on 44th Street Legend has it that Vikings were warriors, robbers and seafaring invaders, aggressive travelers who killed and frightened anyone they encountered. Today we know better. Archaeological discoveries and Scandinavian artifacts now on display at New York’s Discovery Musuem at Times Square explain another side of our Nordic ancestors: They were also peaceful traders, farmers, hunters and craftsmen. Next door to legendary Sardi’s you can loose yourself in beautiful jewelry, swords and armor, an exploration of mythology and the symbolism of Viking ships.

Scandinavian Retreat
An annual Scandinavian retreat has become a popular weekend destination for midwest college students. Each year the program is planned by students and faculty involved in Scandinavian Studies programs at colleges in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois and Iowa. And it attracts retreat alumni, their families and others, often from quite a distance. Always a winter weekend, the weather can sometimes interfere, but then that happens in Scandinavia as well. Averaging around 100 enthusiastic participants, it gives everyone the opportunity to learn about topics of interest to them – programs on any Scandinavian topic are presented, / Page 15 normally about 20 minutes in length.
