From extensive travel and a propensity for photographing statues and sculptures, travel writer and photographer Bo Zaunders accumulated quite a portfolio of Scandinavian three-dimensional art. Here’s a look at a sampling of Scandinavia’s bronze heroes. / Page 5

No snow? With a little magic, the Mora Vasaloppet was a success. It was a cold -6 degrees when some participants started the Vasaloppet ski race in Mora, MN on February 13. The day was very bright and clear as skiers set out on Lake Mora, with a canon giving the start signal. From that point on the bells in the Swedish bell tower rang continuously until all the racers had crossed the finish line in downtown Mora. Vasaloppet ‘worldwide’
The traditional Vasaloppet in Sweden - this year on Sunday, March 6 - is a huge event with over 15,000 skiers (Counting all races during the week-long event it’s closer to 70,000). The now 90-kilometer-long (56 miles) cross-country ski race was first raced in 1922. (Only three races have been cancelled — in 1932, 1934 and 1990 — for various reasons.) Vasaloppet is usually fully booked in one to one and a half minutes when registration opens a year prior to the race. A few years ago and somewhat toungue-in-cheek, a journalist even suggested it as the new National Day, Vasaloppet, a better national holiday? In this issue we report from the Vasaloppet in Mora, Minnesota but / Pages 4 similar races are also held in Canada, China and Japan.
