Just in time for its 10th anniversary, Malmö’sTurning Torso received an award by CTUBH.

Paris has the Eiffel Tower, Rome the Coliseum, and Sweden, since 2005, has a landmark distinguishing her southern shores. And just in time for its 10th anniversary, Turning Torso received an award by the Chicago-based Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH). Their 10 Year Award goes to HSB Turning Torso, the tall, white structure, which seems to stand alone in the western harbor of Malmö, Sweden’s third largest city. During the 1980s the harbor was in an economic slump after shipyards and factories closed but the area has been redeveloped into a dynamic spot to live and work. Preparations for Lent

February 10 is Ash Wednesday this year, marking the beginning of Lent. In Christianity, Lent is the 40-day period from Ash Wednesday to Easter. When it was first observed in the 4th century, its focus was on self-examination and self-denial in preparation for Easter, and Christians used fasting as a demonstration of this process. Over the centuries, rules for fasting have relaxed a bit, though the Catholic Church still recognizes Ash Wednesday, Good Friday and all Fridays during Lent as fasting days. Sweden, although Evangelical Lutheran in tradition since the Reformation of the 1500s is today considered a secular country but has not abstained from the / Pages 8, 11 excesses of food before Lenten fasts.
