Biking in Sweden isn’t a form of exercising, it’s a means of transportation and perhaps even a love affair. When Swedes aren’t biking or taking public transportation, they’re walking. Turn to page 4 for a walk through the Norrmalm/Vasagatan region of Stockholm: ‘My Old Neigborhood’

Milestones When some of you read this, we’ll have passed our 144th anniversary — yes, our first issue hit the streets of New York on September 21, 1872. That thought is still mind boggling to me as a rather recent immigrant. Our co-editor, Amanda Olson Robison, however, is 100% Swedish American with great grandparents immigrating at the end of the 19th century. Her ancestors must have come through New York, and perhaps walked past our first office at 52 Broadway, a mere stone’s throw from Battery Park. What a sight it was when the first newspaper came back from the presses: The newly arrived Swedes were met not just by street peddlers and hustlers of every kind but by Nordstjernan’s greeting to “take a look at the latest news from the homeland and Välkommen till Amerika! ” Välkommen back to Nordstjernan after our August hiatus! The kräftskiva, a traditionally Swedish crayfish party, has taken on a life of its own in some areas of the U.S., including a song contest devoted specifically to the tasty crustacean ( … with schnapps, of course). / Pages 6, 10, 11

Ideas based on another Bergman

While we celebrate what would have been the 100th birthday of the Swedish actress Ingrid Bergman (1915-1982), another Bergman is thought of and often associated with her, though there is no relation between the two. Ingmar Bergman (1918-2007) was also Swedish, he also worked in film, and he even included Ingrid in his 1978 film “Autumn Sonata” (“Höstsonaten”), but the actress and film director weren’t related. A few years ago, a newcomer to the club of Ingmar Bergman fans joined the staff at the House of Sweden in San Diego, and she realized it was the perfect opportunity to share her new-found appreciation for the renowned / Page 9 master of dramatic film.

The winning schnapps song of 2015 also won the audience’s runner-up award.
