He and Tony Moore co-founded the group "The X-Hunters" to locate crash sites of famous experimental research planes throughout the Mojave Desert. The group has found over 100 crash sites of exotic aircraft from Edwards Air Force Base and Area 51, recovering parts of supersonic rocket planes, stealthy spy craft, and vehicles that reached the edge of space. Examples include the X-15, YB-49 flying wing, X-1, XB-70, SR-71, U-2 prototype, and many more. Summary: The presentation highlights Merlin and Moore's book X-Plane Crashes: Exploring Experimental, Rocket Plane & Spycraft Incidents, Accidents & Crash Sites.
