Hatha Yoga Club
Retirement living resident, Gailene Wester, took her first yoga class at age 30 after it was recommended by her neighbour, “They suggested it would help with my asthma, and after learning to breathe through my nose and use my diaphragm at yoga, my asthma eventually became a thing of the past.” Not only did it benefit her health, but Gailene says discovering the philosophy of yoga was a life changer, “I love yoga, not just for its physical values but its spiritual values too.” Shortly after, Gailene decided to become a qualified yoga instructor, and now at 85 years of age, she continues to share her skills and knowledge with residents through the Hatha Yoga Club. “I have taught classes all around Perth, including at the Yoga School of Perth, and I really enjoy it. Especially seeing people who start off quite stiff continue coming to class and improve,” Gailene says. For safety, Gailene does not teach headstands or other advanced sequences which may cause harm, instead, she asks members to simply enjoy themselves and do what feels best for them, “I have arthritic joints, as do most other people, and while I’m not particularly flexible now I still do what I can do, which is all I ask of anyone who comes to the class. Just attempting the various postures, or ‘asanas’ as they’re called in yoga, uses parts of the body which may not be used in everyday life.” Gailene would like to encourage more residents to come down and try yoga this month, “The class is nice and small, so there is plenty of room for anyone who would like to give it a go. The proviso, of course, is that everyone must be able to get up off the floor unaided, however ungainly it may be done! Bring your mat and join us for a relaxing and fun session, namaste.”

Day bowls on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays will continue throughout July. Recent rain has resulted in several days having to be abandoned. Bowls is never cancelled for weather so if enough members turn up and are willing to play a game will go on. We have no competitions or outings planned for this month but on Wednesday the 12th of July a joint bowling game with Rowethorpe has been arranged. Depending on how many Rowethorpe players attend our numbers might be restricted. Turn up early to register as it will be on a first come basis. These are normally fun days with an enjoyable after the bowls gathering. Illness continues to affect many members and we wish them all a speedy recovery and even if they cannot bowl, they are all welcome to happy hours. COVID-19 infections excepted of course. The club now has a happy hour after both Wednesday and Saturday bowls. New members are always welcome. Please contact me if you require any further information.
