We have both witnessed St. Vincent de Paul volunteers and staff returning from home visits with stories of families that are truly struggling: children sleeping on the floor, senior citizens choosing between their medications or paying their utilities, single mothers without food in the cupboards for their children. St. Vincent de Paul’s volunteers and staff found these neighbors in their moments of darkness and offered them vouchers for clothing, furniture and food, assistance through our Charitable Pharmacy, and pathways to pull themselves out of their moment of crisis. Through it all, they offered hope. A woman recently visited our Liz Carter Outreach Center with her two daughters. The three had been living in their car for the past several days, searching for a shelter. While she explained her situation to the staff, her daughters sat down to color. One of our client advocates noticed they were drawing birthday cards and discovered the youngest girl, Jamie, was turning 8 that day. The advocate had to fight back tears realizing what Jamie was experiencing on her birthday. Thinking quickly, she found cupcakes in the food pantry and a stored away gift from our holiday program. Gathering all the supplies she could put together, she created an impromptu birthday party, presenting Jamie with a karaoke machine. Jamie loved to sing and even gave our client advocate a personal performance, singing: “Sometimes in our lives we all have pain we all have sorrow but if we are wise we know that there’s always tomorrow. Lean on me, when you’re not strong and I’ll be your friend, I’ll help you carry on for it won’t be long ‘til I’m gonna need somebody to lean on.” Little did Jamie know how profound her lyrics were. Thanks to your support, we are able to provide a shoulder for our neighbors to lean on until they can once again stand on their own. Simply looking at the service numbers, we recognize that in 2015, St. Vincent de Paul provided emergency assistance to thousands of our neighbors in need. But hearing about Jamie on her birthday, we recognize that your generosity provides hope in the darkness, it turns a moment of crisis into a moment DA N L O N G of beauty. For that, we are grateful. That meant leaving her abusive boyfriend and making her way to St. Vincent de Paul. Breanna found an apartment after a short stay in a shelter and reflected that night over her first meal. “We were eating on

C H A R I TA B L E P H A R M A C Y The St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy is a lifeline for struggling neighbors who cannot afford their prescription medication. Our patients include the uninsured, people with
low income who have Affordable Care Act plans with little to no prescription insurance, aging people who face large gaps in their Medicare coverage, the chronically ill, and

They’re a cheerful couple and have made a nice home with what they have. “Right now, with us, we’re flat broke for the rest of the month but we have food for the month, we’ve got all our bills paid, a roof over our head, right? That’s all we need,” Bob said. Despite working hard for years, as they’ve gotten older, the two have fallen on hard times. They didn’t know how they would afford food or bills, let alone their medication. “I have diabetes, thyroid problems, breathing problems…” Bob said. He barely has enough gas in his car to get

the working poor. Thanks to you, the Charitable Pharmacy certified over 1,200 clients and filled more than 39,000 prescriptions valued at nearly $5 million during 2015.
to the store let alone to all the doctors’ appointments. “That’s just the small things,” he said with a smile. Paula has high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, and congestive heart failure. They’ve relied on social security and disability checks, but when their support was reduced, Bob and Paula found themselves steeped in bills without the ability to pay them. It was a shock. “$210 in the hole. Boom. Just like that,” he said. “We were praying that St. Vincent de Paul would take us back and they did,” he said. “And it’s been a blessing.” Bob says they receive nearly $1,000 worth of medication for free from the Charitable Pharmacy every month. Without your support, Bob and Paula say their situation would have been dire. “We’d go without,” Bob said. “I wouldn’t be able to breath.” “I might not even be here,” Paula said. Thanks to your continued support, Bob and Paula have one less thing to worry about. “It’s a blessing,” said Bob. “You know, it really helps.”

“IN THE DARKEST TIMES IN MY LIFE, they have brought sunshine into my world,” Christina said about St. Vincent de Paul. Christina asked for help from the Christ the King conference for a number of needs. When her refrigerator broke one summer, Vincentians helped her get a new one before her food spoiled. They helped her oldest son, who has autism, get placed in a small private school where he thrives. She and her family benefit from the Charitable Pharmacy where her oldest son sometimes gets medicine to treat his Crohn’s disease. Out of a job, Christina entered a 12-week program that trained her in the IT field, thanks to the help of St. Vincent de Paul volunteers. After graduation, the Christ the King conference celebrated with her, bringing a cake and balloons and proving, once again, how much they support her. Christina says the most pivotal assistance she received from St. Vincent de Paul was shortly after the birth of her third child, Jack. “When Jack was born, I was trying to decide if I was even going to keep him; I couldn’t afford him,” she said. “They gave me hope that this beautiful boy could still be mine and I could care for him.” St. Vincent de Paul stepped in. For Christmas, her conference provided clothes, a crib, bottles and, most importantly, hope for Christina who

now knew she didn’t have to give her son up for adoption. “They’ve done so much for my family I just can’t say enough. They give so selflessly, it’s unreal.” Now, as a result of the assistance and encouragement she received from the Vincentians at Christ the King, Christina has a job building circuit boards. The fulltime job provides benefits and enough to eventually support her family. It’s an answered prayer to Christina and to the Vincentians who she says have prayed for her success all along. “I just want the world to know about St. Vincent de Paul. They’re angels sent from heaven that’s what they are,” she said.

GETTING TO THE ROOT The Getting Ahead program transforms lives by giving participants the resources and skills they need to rise out of their current situation. It challenges and encourages them to take an active role in creating their own

That’s when she and four strangers embarked on a journey together that would leave them with a tight knit group of support and give them the tools to change their lives and their community for the better. In late 2015 they met each other for a course called Getting Ahead. “For the first time in 54 years I was able to look myself in the mirror about a month ago and tell myself that I love

jobs, and transportation. They take an assessment of their own resources and learn how to build those resources as part of their move toward self-sufficiency.
me,” she said. “It took me a long time to get there and I would have never gotten there if it weren’t for this group. And now I can sit in my apartment and say this is mine. I paid for this.”
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. During the 16 week class, Greta and the others discussed tough topics surrounding their own financial, emotional, and spiritual struggles, learning meaningful ways to overcome their challenges. Led by staff and volunteers, they learned to make in-depth assessments of themselves and the community at large and learned ways to improve both. More importantly, they gained a bond with one another and learned to respect themselves on a whole new level. “Before participating in Getting Ahead, I feel like my life was headed totally the other way. I didn’t know, I was lost,” said Greta. “Everybody here kind of brought me back.” Greta says before she depended on others, now she is learning to be independent. Thanks to your support, Greta is learning to stand on her own.

Grad school? Apply for jobs?” A friend suggested that she join him in the Vincentian Volunteers of Cincinnati (VVC) year of service program. She told him she didn’t think it would be a good fit for her, but she applied nonetheless. “I loved every bit of the experience,” she said. Mary’s year of service gave her an experience she’ll value for the rest of her life. “It was a challenging year,” she said. “It was everything I needed to grow and learn more about myself professionally, learn more about where I saw myself in my faith, and to make some really great resolutions. I’m really grateful to VVC for that.” The Vincentian Volunteers live in community for 11 months in a home in the West End where they make new discoveries about themselves, their faith, and their relationships with others. Embracing this great opportunity to broaden their horizons, Vincentian Volunteers benefit from a mentor and gain valuable professional experience working side by side with St. Vincent de Paul staff. Mary worked in the Social Services department and had a
direct impact on our neighbors in need, helping them find ways to pay their rent, keep the electric on, and find a bed to sleep on at night. It was emotionally tolling, Mary struggled with the stories she heard on a daily basis. But it was also incredibly rewarding. “To

R E TR O F I TTI NGS For over a decade, St. Vincent de Paul has partnered with the University of Cincinnati College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) to inspire the spirit of giving through fashion. RetroFittings continues to grow every year with each new theme toppingthe one before. Dozens of sophomore fashion students design an ensemble using just $15 worth of materials from a St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and Donation Center. The designs are showcased in a high-energy fashion show event that also includes boutique shopping, live auction, raffle baskets and more.

Through a variety of 2015 holiday programs, including Thanksgiving and Christmas food distributions, Adopt-A-Family, Christmas Angels Toy Program, Holiday Hearts and Shop with a Bengal you ensured hope lives on for families facing tough times.
CHA R I TA B LE PHA R MACY: A LI FE-CHA N GI NG GI F T “WHEN YOU DO THE RIGHT THING, good things happen whether you intend it or not, the fruits of your labor are always recognized in one way or another,” said Mike Jennings. Mike didn’t know his years of caring for Ann Buenger as her physician would leave such a lasting impact. It was through those years that he came to know her and she came to know him. Years later, after both Ann and her husband Clem passed, their support of the community continued. With no children, she and Clem created the Clement and Ann Buenger Foundation, which now supports a number of causes. One cause the foundation chose to fund was a shock to Mike. “The Buenger Foundation decided to make a large donation, $100,000,
to help open the Western Hills Charitable Pharmacy,” Mike said. The donation was made in Mike’s honor. As president of the St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy Board, Mike was thrilled by the donation. “I almost fell out of my chair when I heard that that gift had been made,” he said. “I was very honored and, you know, humbled.” The foundation’s gift in 2015 and the generous support of others made it possible to begin construction of a second charitable pharmacy. In February, 2016, the second St. Vincent de Paul charitable pharmacy location opened in Western Hills. Having charitable pharmacy services inside a thrift store will increases access to life-saving medications and serves as a model

Hailing from the west side himself, Mike was particularly glad to know the pharmacy would benefit his old neighborhood. “The need is almost unmeasurable,” Mike said. “The need of the people on the west side of Cincinnati will far outstrip our capabilities but we’ll keep trying as hard as we can and do the best that we can for as many as we can.”

CONFERENCES St. Vincent de Paul has a network of nearly 900 parish-based conference volunteers who provide person-to-person assistance to struggling families through home visits in more than 70 Cincinnati neighborhoods. Conferences support their neighbors in need with a wide range of offerings including rent or utility assistance, food, clothing and furniture. But more important than the physical aid given, the conferences provide friendship and spiritual support to the people they help. It is at this grass-roots level that the great majority of Vincentians find themselves engaged in the person-to-person service of those in need. Additionally, three school-based conferences provide students with an opportunity to help their neighbors through food and clothing drives and other support. In 2015, parish-based conferences helped more than 33,800 people (excluding food services) while engaging in 11,500 visits, nearly 8,000 of which were made to our neighbors’ homes. Parish-based food pantries and conferences provided food for more than 58,000 neighbors. Conferences brought joy to nearly 6,500 families during the holidays. WHY W E DO I T JIM MCCAFFERTY HAS VOLUNTEERED at St. Vincent de Paul for 18 years. He donates financially and gives his time at his Immaculate Heart of Mary Conference and at the Paul and Edyth and Carl Lindner Choice Food Pantry. “I think sometimes we get more out of it than we give,” he said. “As a matter of fact, I know we do: being able to see the look on someone’s face when you can temporarily bail them out of a situation … when you see little kids in
a house that they’re about to turn the heat off … it’s very rewarding work. And necessary work.” Jim says he has met with and offered assistance to people from all walks of life. In Anderson Township, where his conference operates, he says the homes are nice and to all outward appearances, there is very little poverty. “People live two miles from us, three miles from church and they’ve got these horrendous types of problems,” he said. “To do this, it’s a real eye opening humbling experience.” He’s confident investing his time and money in St. Vincent de Paul because Jim knows
it is spent well. For the second consecutive year, St. Vincent de Paul received a 4 star rating from Charity Navigator in 2015, ranking it in the top 14 percent of all nonprofits in the country. For Jim, donating to a nonprofit like St. Vincent de Paul makes sense. “I do it because I know that they do good work … I know that if I donate, it’s going to good use. It’s as simple as that.” Jim also knows that despite the help he’s been a part of over the past 18 years, there is still a great need in Cincinnati. “It’s amazing how many agencies and people there are in the Greater Cincinnati area who are willing to help and who do help. It’s equally amazing how many people need help.”
