Dear Friends, At the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, love is our first gift to those we help. Each day in homes all across our community, St. Vincent de Paul members visit suffering families. This has been a particularly difficult year for our neighbors in need. All around them they hear stories of economic recovery, but there has been no recovery for many families. Middle class jobs that once ensured a decent living have given way to low-end and part-time work. Poverty is seeping into suburban neighborhoods where it was once rare, and physical needs are accompanied by a sense of despair, shame and hopelessness. And yet, in the midst of this need … love grows. Into these lives, St. Vincent de Paul volunteers bring practical help, emotional support and spiritual nourishment. A little boy who is hungry gets a hot, nourishing meal. An elderly man who sleeps on the floor is given a bed, and the family who would be on the street tomorrow receives help with their rent tonight. The distraught mother who has given up all hope finds the comfort of a listening ear and a loving heart. One hand reaches to grasp another, and love grows. Last year, our volunteers personally visited the homes of people in need more than 7,500 times, bearing the gifts you so generously gave. Thanks to you, hope and love replaced fear and discouragement in the lives of more than 120,000 neighbors in need. And love grows. In the following pages, you will find the stories of a small selection of families and individuals whose lives have changed because you answered Christ’s call to love one another. Out of the true kindness of your heart, love grows to inspire hope and change lives. God bless you for the love you bring to those who are suffering.

hristopher and his granddaughter, Sally, have a radiating love for one another. As Sally bounces around brightening everyone’s day, she keeps an eye on her grandpa, encouraged by his loving laugh of approval. When Sally snuggles up to her grandpa, he transforms from a tough, hardworking man into a gentle and devoted grandfather. Together, they are at peace and at home. Sally lives with Christopher and he does everything he can for his lovable, bright-eyed granddaughter. “It’s all about her,” said Christopher. Sally’s parents love her but they are both still young, so Christopher tries to spend as much time with her as possible. Christopher recently fell on hard times when he was laid-off from his job. “Before I knew it, our electric and water were turned off and we were behind on our rent,” he said. Panicked and concerned about what would happen to Sally if they lost their home, Christopher worked hard to raise

Because of your generosity, 5,210 families received rent or utility assistance in 2012. Families who receive rent and utility assistance meet one-on-one with our staff and volunteers to work toward longterm solutions through budget counseling, ﬁnancial literacy classes and more. 90 percent of the families we helped were still in their homes at least 6 months after receiving assistance.

Following a series of heart attacks, this once healthy and vibrant man was diagnosed with emphysema and heart disease. David faced a bleak future. He needed 18 different medicines daily, costing $900 per month out of pocket. He faced an impossible choice. “I can choose to pay for my medicine,” David said, “but I

Despite the many hardships life has brought to David, the kindness shown to him by St. Vincent de Paul volunteers has lifted his spirit. He has vowed to live his life fully and have a positive outlook every day. “The amount of time isn’t as important to me now as the quality of that time. It’s being at peace with God. It’s spending time with my family, especially my grandkids. St. Vincent de Paul gives me both of those.”

In 2012, the Charitable Pharmacy ﬁlled 45,130 prescriptions, valued at more than $5 million. The Charitable Pharmacy provides prescription medication to those in need while guiding them toward longterm health through health screenings, medication adherence counseling, nutrition counseling and more.

ne day in April, Kayla’s tiny daughter stopped breathing, and everything in her life turned upside down. Kayla’s young son DeMarco had been excited to welcome home a little sister to love and care for, but was heartbroken when the baby passed away. Losing her daughter to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome only weeks after she was born plummeted Kayla into a deep depression. Her pain was paralyzing, preventing her from working or even caring for DeMarco. Kayla’s mother, Nicole, did all she could for her daughter and brought Kayla and DeMarco to live in her apartment. She cared for DeMarco and worked extra hours to cover expenses. But between the funeral costs, medical costs, and Kayla’s loss of income, the family’s savings was completely drained in just a few months. Nicole was about to lose her home. In their darkest hour, Nicole and Kayla turned to St. Vincent de Paul. Your generous donations to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store and Donation Centers helped this grieving family pay their rent and provide clothing and furniture for growing DeMarco. Kayla still struggles with the death of her young daughter, but she has returned to work at a fast food restaurant and is staying strong for DeMarco. The family is still working to get back on their feet, but the kindness and generosity

Sometimes it is the death of a family member or an illness, other times it is something as simple as a car repair or having their work hours cut. When he and his uncle drove past St. Bartholomew Parish, Ezeckel was immediately drawn to the church. “I am not sure why we stopped at that church that day, but we did,” said Ezeckel’s uncle. It was a stop that changed Ezeckel’s life. The St. Vincent de Paul members at St. Bartholomew welcomed Ezeckel and his family with open arms. First, they provided basics like clothing and food. Just a few short months ago, they were living in the midst of civil war in Liberia, stepping over dead bodies. They hid in the forests, sleeping against trees. Then, there came a miracle — an opportunity to move to America. An aunt and uncle whom Ezeckel had never personally met learned of their plight and agreed take them in. Ezeckel and his family moved into their aunt and uncle’s humble home in Mt. Healthy. They had no jobs, no driver’s licenses, no car, and very few possessions.

Suburban poverty in Cincinnati has increased by 83 percent since 2000, with many at-risk families now isolated in suburban communities where few services are available. St. Vincent de Paul’s network of 950 parish-based volunteers serving more than 71 Cincinnati neighborhoods places us at the front lines of suburban poverty, uniquely positioned to reach and assist these families. In 2012, our members visited the homes of those in need 7,447 times, helping 37,078 people.

Rooted in the mission of St. Vincent de Paul, Vincentian Volunteers of Cincinnati (VVC) is the only faith-based, year-long residential service program in Cincinnati. members work full-time at the West End Outreach Center providing person-to-person service to those in need, serve as members of a St. Vincent de Paul Conference, facilitate immersion experiences through the Ozanam Center for Service Learning, and live in an intentional community in the West End, regularly engaging in spiritual formation and community growth. Every night, hundreds of children and elderly neighbors sleep on a cold, hard ﬂoor. The Bob and Sylvia Rahe Mattress Fund provides comfort and rest to neighbors in need by giving them a mattress, box spring, and bed rail set. In 2012, St. Vincent de Paul provided 786 beds to local adults and children.

From Delhi to Anderson Township, and Bridgetown to Finneytown, requests for help with food — the most basic of all needs — are on the rise. During Kroger and Fox 19’s Food From the Heart Drive, donations are accepted in food collection barrels and coin-boxes at Kroger store locations. Our volunteers carry your gifts directly to the homes of hungry families in your local neighborhood.

As suburban poverty grows, more and more families face a meager holiday, unable to afford a holiday meal or Christmas gifts for their children. During the 2012 holiday season, you gave hope and holiday cheer to more than 7,467 local families by generously supporting programs such as Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets, Adopt-A-Family, Angel Toy Program, Holiday Hearts, and Shop with a Bengal.

It’s chilly on the St. Vincent de Paul dock where stacks of food and Thanksgiving turkeys are ready to be distributed to the struggling families that will soon stream through the doors. But for the moment all is quiet as old and young, black and white, helper and helped join hands and bow heads in a prayer of hope and thanks, … love grows.

The Ozanam Center for Service Learning offers retreat experiences for adults and students. Retreats include a balance of interaction with neighbors of diverse backgrounds, personal reﬂection, service activities, and discovery of practical ways to break down barriers and create lasting change. A S S I S TA N C E P R O V I D E D In 2012, contributed volunteer hours totaled 105,910 including: • Conference members: 948 members equaling 58,061 hours • Bank Street Pantry, Charitable Pharmacy, other services: 2,224 total volunteers equaling 23,540 hours • Stores: 24,309 volunteer hours In 2012, SVDP helped more than 120,000 people through its programs: • Conferences (Parish-based Volunteer Groups): helped 37,078 people & made 7,447 home visits

• Charitable Pharmacy: ﬁlled 45,130 prescriptions valued at $5,362,724

• Social Services: helped 38,185, including 340 home visits
